TIPS (Trials of Improved Practices) is a participatory, asset-based approach used to test new practices through negotiation and experimentation to identify feasible recommendations for behavior change. It involves program participants trying out a new practice during a trial period to assess feasibility within their culture. TIPS indicates which behaviors should and should not be promoted in a program, and helps understand current practices, problems, beliefs, motivators, constraints, and recommendations to form the foundation for counseling guidelines and behavior change strategies. The TIPS process involves field work, negotiation, and analysis to pinpoint feasible and efficacious behaviors and identify motivations and barriers to behavior change.
