Audre Lorde Research Papers
Audre Lorde was born on February 18, 1934 in New York City to immigrant parents from the West
Indies. She learned to talk, read, and write somewhere around the age of four and wrote her first poem
in eighth grade, which was then published in Seventeen magazine. In 1962, Lorde married a man
named Edward Rollins and had two children before they divorced in 1970. However, in 1968 she
moved to Tougaloo, Mississippi and met her long term partner, Frances Clayton. Her earliest poems
were often romantic, but in the 1960s became more politically centered due to the amount of civil
unrest combined with confusion over her own sexuality. At the time many of her poems were written,
more than one fifth of the nation lived below the poverty line, and ... Show more content on

The idea of feminist criticism began in the 1960s, right around the time Lorde wrote and published
much of her work. She used feminist theory as a way to undermine traditional patriarchal systems and
unite women in a struggle against discrimination, oppression, racism, sexism, and patriarchy. Her
writing aims to examine and promote women s interests, as well as help women of various
backgrounds identify with one another through their commonality of systemic oppression and their
desire for basic human rights. In Lorde s words, I am defined as other in every group I m part of . This
phrase is a product of our society s notion that to be different means one can not associate oneself with
any given group unless they fit wholly into that and nothing else. As Lorde puts it, It is not our
differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
Lorde was known to have criticized some feminists during the 1960s for focusing on the specific
experiences of white middle class women rather than women as a diverse group. Through her work,
she has observed that black women s experiences are often vastly different from those of white
women, and because being a white woman is considered normal, black women are often marginalized
and cast out of the woman identity . This is similar to the way lesbians are considered to be against
feminism for not fitting the mold of the

Mexican American Women
In the early 1940s, America was entering the second world war, and the female community was
reaching new heights in the labor force. Millions of hard working women filled men s positions as
men joined the military, operating complex machinery in factories, farms, and on the road. During this
time, the opportunities and need for labor in the United States opened occupational opportunities for
Mexican immigrants. Some Mexican families settled in the county of Los Angeles, making a home for
their future generations. Many second generation, Mexican American youth, more specifically those
known as zoot suiters and pachuco(a)s, refused to, abide by the norms of segregation, creating a new,
rebellious identity that defied all social expectation, (Escobedo 136). The pachuca women of World
War II challenged societies labels and their communities traditions, creating their own individual,
outrageous and flamboyant ideas of beauty and lifestyle. These actions took Anglo and Mexican
immigrant communities by shock. Because of the unfamiliarity of the pachuca lifestyle, they both
responded negatively, each accusing the other for their outlandish behavior.
The expectations for the second generation Mexican American female were high. Their families not
only expressed the importance of sticking to their traditions and cultures, but they also relied on their
future generations to maintain a good name and reputation for the Mexican immigrant community.
The young Mexican American women,

Back To The Present Essay
Back to the present: After Qiu brought back a big jar of wine, JingYi shoos her out of the room and
smiles as she pours all of the content of the small white jar into the wine. After an hour of impatient
waiting, she finally hears footsteps approaching her room. She quickly runs to check her make up and
then opens the door before the servants even had a chance to knock on it. Your highness, It s an honor
to be serving you tonight! JingYi bows and says with a coy smile. Shen just ignores her and walks into
her room with an indifferent look on his faces. JingYi quickly closes the door behind her and smiles as

The beautiful shiny full moon has now replaced the sun on the clear sky. So Zhanshi stops to admire
the beautiful moon. As he looks at the moon with a longing expression and sorrowful eyes, the sound
of someone s softly weeping interrupt his thoughts. { It s so late. Who s out here crying? } Zhanshi
thought to himself as he made his way towards the sound. As he walks closer and closer towards the
pavilion, the sight of a small white figure with what appears to be red eyes surprised him and almost
gave him a small heart attack. Upon seeing the wistful figure, he thought that he had encounter a stray

Jefferson Davis
An Analysis of Jefferson Davis By: Blayden McLeod History 131 2101 John D. Sulentic September 3
Thesis Statement: Jefferson Davis was a very incompetent President and showed it by his policies and
lack of action during the Civil War Jefferson Davis was born June 3rd, 1808 on a small farm in
southwestern Kentucky from his parents Samuel Davis and Jane Cook Davis. After spending most of
his childhood life in the southern frontier of Mississippi, he decided to receive a quality education,
mainly because of his brilliance and strong intelligence. He attended many schools before he went on
to complete a four year term at West Point Military Academy which later appointed him a Second
Lieutenant in 1828. Davis was then commissioned to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the first major issues President Davis had to deal with was the decision to bombard Fort
Sumter. President Lincoln had basically notified the South Carolina Governor that he was sending a
ship with provisions to Fort Sumter, which is off the coast of Charleston, but actually the ship was
armed with troops. Confederate intelligence had intercepted this knowledge beforehand and they had
six men of war ships outside to intercept the ship. General Beauregard of the Confederate army was
given direct order from President Davis to demand immediate evacuation of Sumter and to use force if
there was no compliance. The Union Major Anderson ignored the commands and on April 12, 1861,
the Civil War had officially begun when Confederate troops bombarded Sumter. Anderson shortly
surrendered and sent the message to the North that is was no longer time for diplomatic solutions.
Davis felt Lincoln had maneuvered the south into firing the first shot and Davis said The assault was
made by sending a hostile fleet. Davis was forced to take active measures for defense when Lincoln
declared war on the South on April 15th and gathered many grateful volunteers who were glad to fight
for there cause. Later, and against Davis will, Richmond was voted the capitol of the Confederacy.
Despite Davis uncanny knack for being stubborn, he

Personal Philosophy Of Eating Healthy
My philosophy of eating or on how people should eat , is people should eat healthy . Like buying fresh
food , and or growing your own food. Not by eating fast food every day , i understand its really good
but it isn t good for you. People need to think about your body and how it will affect you later on in
life . Some people don t have the privilege to say what they want to eat , but you can flip that around
and actually put suggestions to your parents on what you want . Choose things wisely , check on how
it is grow and or processed , look at what s in the product . It s really all depends on how you want to
change about your eating habits.
People shouldn t eat junk food as in chips , cookies , fast food , greasy things in general . If you eat
them all the time start limiting your amount of product you serve yourself a day. Like with chips stop
eating the whole bag like some people , and only have a few a day . It sounds hard at first but once
you start easing your way into it , you will get used to it . Go and see a nutritionist on your eating , and
on what you buy for yourself . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Importance Of Diversity In Language Learning
Our understanding of language, as languages educators becomes part of our professional stance and,
as such, influences our curriculum, planning and classroom pedagogies. Teachers who view language
simply as code make acquiring grammar and vocabulary the primary, if not the only, goal of language
learning. Within such a limited approach, students do not begin to engage with language as a
communicative reality but simply as an intellectual exercise or as a work requiring memorising. It is
primarily a conventional symbol system concerned with communication or coorperation between
people (Lyons, 1981) Individual and social (Gee Hayes, 2011) people talk like others and yet all have
their own style (Bakhtin, 1981, 1986). Every language shares the same basic design properties nouns,
verbs, sentences, and clauses (Chomsky, 1965).
Language is not just a set of rules that tells us how to talk with the correct grammar. A cognitive
phenomenon a set of rules in our minds or brains that tells us how to speak grammatically (Clark,
1996) and Cannot be thought of as only a system of formal elements; have to take into account its
functions (Brumfit, 1994)
Variety is the spice of life . Diversity makes life interesting and gives it all its flavour. This phrase
comes from William Cowper s poem, The Task (1785). I believe in this saying as it is totally true and
as a current Early Childhood Educator, I am embedding awareness and appreciation for different

King And Maxwell Book Report
With a soldier missing, a boy lost, and multiple people dead, King and Maxwell by David Baldacci is
going to keep you on your toes with every turn of the page. Tyler Wingo just got the worst news of his
life. His dad, Sam Wingo, an army reservist, is killed overseas in combat. That is until Tyler receives
an email from his dad telling him how he is sorry. To help find the truth, Tyler hired private
investigators Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. To find the truth, though proves to be harder than
trying to ride an alligator. ☺ (Metaphor) Facing heavy pressure from the Pentagon to drop the case,
King and Maxwell will not accede to them. Together, the pair traces every clue back to the origin, find
out the plan, and race against the clock to make sure the plan does not work out as planned. I would
give my book a B grade because the all the different characters are hard to keep track of at times, as
readers we know who stole the money pretty early on, and the plot line of the book does not seem very
realistic at times. One reason why I gave this book a B grade is because there are a lot of characters

already know who stole the money. Just like that, I lost some interest in the book like a puppy loses
interest in a dog toy. ☺ (Simile) While the book was still pretty good, I think I would have liked it
better if I would not have known who the suspect was, and that is another reason why I gave this book

Effects Of Immigrants In The 1920s
Fear and greed pump through the veins of our sweet American people causing a boundary between the
truth and the presumption of immigrants. Immigrants have always been the friendly strangers who ve
come to enjoy America s freedom with ambitious mindsets. However, as soon as the immigrants
started affecting the future of true Americans, these friendly strangers instantly were seen as evil
intruders. The rumors spread of the evil doings of immigrants, which lead to the presumption that
immigrants only had wrong intentions when migrating to our country. Many Americans sought to find
a reason to kick the immigrants out of their country because the immigrants migrating had no benefits
to them. The presumption of immigrants consisted of the facts that they took jobs from others or were
threats to the well being of America. In order to protect American citizens from these alleged
wrongdoings, the government chose to limit the amount of immigrants through acts, such as the
National Origins Act and the Emergency Quota Act. Furthermore, the government used the ideas
rooted from fear and greed of the surrounding citizens to inspire this idea of setting up limitations,
which led to to the abhorrent treatment of immigrants in the 1920 s.
Fear is a contagious virus, which infected the citizens of America and as time went on the virus
worsened. It all began towards the end of WWI, Russia s Soviet Union strengthened with the support
of Vladimir Lenin leading the

Human Consumption Is Depleting The Earth s Natural...
Human consumption is depleting the Earth s natural resources and impairing the capacity of life
supporting ecosystems. Humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively over the past
50 years than during any other period, primarily to meet increasing demands for food, fresh water,
timber, fibre and fuel. Such consumption, together with world population increasing from 2.6 billion
in 1950 to 6.8 billion in 2009, are major contributors to environmental damage.(Human population
growth and the demographic transition). Strengthening family planning services is crucial to slowing
population growth, now 85 million annually,(Essential Environment, Human Population, page 118)
and limiting population size to 9.2 billion by 2050. Otherwise, birth rates could remain unchanged,
and world population would grow to 11 billion.(Essential Environment, Human Population, page 120).
Indonesia is the 4th most populated country on the planet, making up 3.49% of the earths population,
behind China, India and US ( World Population). Indonesia s population is expected to grow to 271. 1
million in 2020 and 305.6 million in 2035, and the question is can the future Indonesia sustain this
demographic burden (Indonesia s population growth: A demographic bonus or Burden)?

Analysis Of Angela Carter s Post Modern Rendition, Tiger...
When you think of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, what do you remember? In the typical plot
of Beauty and the Beast, Beauty aids the Beast in his transformation from beast to man. The focus of
the typical storyline is the battle between innate traits and characteristics accepted by society.
However, in Angela Carter s post modern rendition, Tiger s Bride, not only does she shift the focus to
explore the relationship between love and self acceptance, but she also changes the plot in efforts to
make Beauty undergo a transformation. Through Carter s tone, exploration of power dynamics, and
use of imagery, the story follows the progression of the love and self acceptance that influences
Beauty s metamorphosis.
Within the story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the moment between Beauty and the Beast continues, she feels as if [she is] within the field of
force of his golden eyes (81). This line signifies how much attraction lies between the two characters
as Beauty feels that she s in the field of force , keeping her entranced with him. Consequently, each
stroke of his tongue rip[s] off skin after successive skin (81), releasing Beauty from any remaining ties
to society and allowing her to have freedom. By removing each layer of skin , the Beast ultimately
unleashes Beauty s true identity, giving her the opportunity to fully accept herself without the pressure
to conform by society. With Carter s use of tone, the audience gains the ability to explore how the love
of the Beast causes Beauty to not only discover who she truly is, but also learn how to accept herself.
Similarly, Carter explores the power dynamics between the Beast and Beauty, drawing attention to
how outside forces allow a person to develop self acceptance. In the beginning, Carter introduces the
audience to Beauty who has autonomy, yet still complies to societal norms. When she encounters the
Beast after she s left in the castle alone, she decides that she will not smile (69) at him, simply because
she does not want to. By choosing to not smile at the Beast, she defies the typical role of a female in a
fairy tale. However, the influence of society still has an impact on her because when she

Compare And Contrast Cacti And Pigmyweed
Our biosphere was successful. Every biotic factor we added survived. Both cacti and the worms gained
weight. The moon cactus gained 5.1 grams and the zebra cactus gained 2.4 grams. The Pigmyweed
lost 1.3 grams. This means the cacti out competed the succulent. Also, surprisingly, each of the worms
gained 0.015 grams. We believed the worms ate the roots and the plants decomposed material. Both of
the cacti had noticeably larger root systems. In fact, a;; the plants were still moist because sand was
sticking to them. In any ecosystem, I tend to believe that everything lives in harmony. However, even
in our small desert biosphere, there was competition. Both cacti root systems were very extensive but

Swot Analysis Ryanair
Strengths Ryanair is one of the largest European airline company and it keeps growing by launching
new routes and opening new bases. Ryanair was the first company in reducing ticket costs and keep
them low at all times. Low fares area key strength of the company and very big advantage over other
airlines. Another strength of the company has a strong brand which means it s widely recognised.
Ryanair established in the European market share. The current market cap in millions is £17,729.86
according to London Stock Exchange. (Appendix 1) The last strength of Ryanair listed is the ability of
landing in over 200 destinations on 33 countries. Weakness Internally, there has been serious strategic
issues with current employment model applied by Ryanair. Statistics shown that the average length of
service for pilots is about 4.6 years and average of 386 pilots leave Ryanair each year since 2012. This
is caused by precarious nature of their employment relationship including disrespect towards pilots
and cabin crew, failure of giving scheduled time off and working over contracted hours. In this case
precarious work condition means that many Ryanair pilots don t have fixed permanent contract. Pilots
are grouped into Irish agency companies which have between 5 and 8 pilot directors, those agency
companies then subcontract into a UK labour provider of pilots and then that UK provider provides
the pilot labour into Ryanair. This causing a big distance between Ryanair and the

Red Lobster Analysis Essay
Red Lobster Altering Perception through Improved Positioning
Given the changes in Red Lobster s strategy over the past few years and the surprising ability to attract
new, experiential customers, it our recommendation that they modify their strategy to focus on
pursuing this type of clientele. We will go into further detail momentarily; however, the reason for
focusing on the experiential customer group is that Red Lobster has the opportunity to increase
revenue and net operating income at each restaurant by 20% or more. Granted, these are enormous
gains and it will take a few years to realize their full potential, but for the reasons laid out below, we
believe these gains are a realistic possibility.

research showed it was the most preferred way of cooking seafood. This was a very effective way of
repositioning the brand, as it helped to shift perceptions away from the fried foods of the past to the
new fresh preparation methods. Furthermore, grill masters were introduced, and the position quickly
became the most prestigious job in the restaurant. This was also highly effective, as it added a higher
quality feel to the food, and served a dual purpose as the centerpiece of the marketing plan in 2011. In
addition, a fresh fish menu was provided to consumers, separate from the main menu, which
highlighted the daily catch. Finally, select ingredients were upgraded and restaurant locations were
remodeled in order to strengthen the perception of top quality and freshness, while appealing to
consumers other senses.
The current Red Lobster advertisements have come a long way from the all you can eat snow crab

Apache Concept Of Wisdom
Wisdom is of unlimited importance in our daily lives. As humans, one cannot survive without wisdom.
The Apache culture says, Wisdom is viewed first and foremost as an instrument of survival. (131).
Like air, without wisdom humans cannot flourish. Therefore, it is of extreme importance that, as
humans, we find a way to discover wisdom and integrate it into our lives. However, Wisdom is not the
same for everyone and therefore how each of us finds or locates wisdom might look different.
Throughout this course we have discussed the concept of place and how it can help us find infinite
wisdom. The Apache people tell us that to find wisdom we must have three mental conditions

The Apaches people say, steady human minds maintain themselves in a manner that ensures their own
stability and reliability. This is achieved by relinquishing all thoughts of superiority and by eliminating
aggressive feelings towards fellow humans beings (133). Nursing has allowed me to start to develop
this skill. It has allowed me to let go of negative and harsh feelings. As humans, if we are constantly
worried about being better or jealous of someone else that we will never be able to develop a smooth
mind. In life, as well as nursing school, there is always someone that is going to be better at something
than you are or is going to get a higher grade. As humans, it is natural that we would become jealous
of this or try to become superior to someone else. However, when we do this we are blocking our
chances to develop wisdom. The Apache s say, Steady minds are unhampered by feelings of arrogance
or pride, anger or vindictiveness, jealousy or lust all of which present hindrances to calm and

Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment
Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and climatic model (CLM 4.5) outputs were
conducted over the southern part of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) (area: 835 × 103
km2) in Sudan and Chad to estimate the natural recharge rate. The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System
(NSAS) is shared by Egypt, Libya, Chad, and Sudan, and is one of the largest (area: ~ 2 × 106 km2)
groundwater systems in the world. Findings from the study include: (1) average annual precipitation
was estimated at 77.5 mm (65 km3); (2) recharge rate was estimated at 2.79±0.99 km3/yr; given the
annual extraction rate (~0.407±0.10 km3), recharge rate amounted to 3.2±1.00 km3/yr; and (3) the
east west trending Uweinat Aswan uplift impedes south to north groundwater flow and replenishment
from the recharge area in the south. A cost effective integrated approach is developed to quantify the
modern recharge of the NSAS during the period from January 2003 to December 2012.
1. Introduction
Groundwater recharge is the process of water movement downward through a saturated zone under the
force of gravity or in a direction determined by a hydraulic condition (Simmers, 1997). Natural
recharge of groundwater may occur from precipitation, from rivers and canals, or from lakes. In arid
and semi arid areas, assessment of groundwater recharge is one of the key challenges in determining
the sustainable yield of aquifers, as recharge rates are generally low in comparison with average
annual rainfall or

SQL injections are the serious threat to the web applications; they permit attackers to acquire

Because these vulnerabilities can provide access to the sensitive information, this can result in loss of
confidential data. In some cases, the attacker can take control the host web application by using SQL
injection.
Injection Techniques
a. Injection through user input: the attackers inject SQL statements by giving reasonably user input. A
web application can read user data based on the environment in which application is deployed. This
helps the attacker to get the user data directly from them.
b. Injection through cookies: Cookies are data sent from a website and stored on the client system. If
web applications access the cookies to establish SQL queries then an attacker can easily submit an
attack by combining it in cookie.
c. Injection through variables: Variables are the group that contains HTTP, network headers, and
environmental variables. If these variables are associated with the database without altering, this
creates SQL injection vulnerability.

losing their special category status and against wearing prison uniforms. This democratic success
persuaded Republicans of the benefits of politics instead of violence as a way of getting what they
wanted. In 1985 British and Irish prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Garrett Fitzgerald signed the
Anglo Irish Agreement. This recognised the Republic of Ireland s right to have an advice giving role
in the affairs of Northern Ireland.

The government in Northern Ireland is made up of all the main political parties according to their

political foes: the loyalist Democratic Unionist Party and the republican Sinn Féin Party (Law, RD,

In April 2002 weapons inspectors were satisfied that a substantial amount of IRA arms was safely

The Blade Artist Essay
Irvine Welsh s latest novel The Blade Artist (released this year) was a novel that caught my eye while I
was looking along the shelves of my local library. The Blade Artist is a crime and thriller novel that
keeps you guessing until the end. Frank Begbie s first son, Sean Begbie is found dead in his
hometown Leith and he makes it his mission to find the killer. He also encounters some old friends
and enemies from before he basically changed his whole identity which is now an artist from Los
Angeles with a family. Things that I liked in this novel were the idea People aren t always who they
say they are and Frank Begbie as an interesting character.
Frank Begbie was an interesting character for me because he has lived two different lives over his life
and they feature two very different people with very different personalities. His personality as Jim
Francis is a very calm character who is happy with life as a sculptor whereas Frank Begbie which is
his original identity is obsessed with violence and loved to play tricks which would harm people.
Occasionally one character will appear while acting as or being the other like when Jim was punching
and kicking Santiago on the beach. The conversation between the pair went like this. Santiago screams
in pain Please don t hurt me anymore Jim! Please oh please!

this novel to teenagers and adults because it would a very inapplicable novel for anyone younger. The

Embracing The Dumb Blonde Analysis
In its largest sense, Session on Gender demonstrated opinions on gender, sexuality, and women s
issues. It also showed the intercultural relations that cross national boundaries, cultural relations
within a particular society, and the interactions between female activities such as art and literature.
The first speaker, Krista Aldritch presented the topic Embracing the Dumb Blonde : Navigating
Identity in Anita Loos Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She argued that dumb blonde can actually be very
intellectual and use her look to get what she wants. Krista supported her argument by using Lorelei
Lee, the main character of Anita Loos Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Lorelei Lee s character reveals what
it means to be a woman in 1920s. Krista explained that Loralei Lee uses her dumb blond persona to
succeed and to secure her future by being that desirable image for men.
The second speaker, Jacky Bui, confer on topic The Anomaly of an Asian American Woman in The
21st Century: Analyzing Intersectionality and Challenging Societal Norms in Mainstream Media. She
reasoned that Asian American women are in minority group because they aren t white and invisible for

Meaning Of Respect In Confucius
As time goes by, respect is being lost and forgotten. Even the definition of respect seems to be a bit
muddied. Many people are forgetting the one golden rule that still applies. The golden rule being treat
others the way you would want to be treated. People nowadays tend to turn respect towards things that
are worthy of praise and they are forgetting to keep the same respect to everything else. No matter the
color of someone s skin, the religion they believe in, and where they come from everyone deserves
and should get respect, in Confucius s teachings, as a basic human element and many Asian countries,
respect is a major characteristic and etiquette that people are learning and quickly forgetting.
Subclaim I (body paragraph)
As far back as 500 BC, Confucius lived in a time of warfare among the states that made up China.
During these times there were rapid political changes in the society and people were forgetting and no

My Calling Of Purpose Essay
My Calling of Purpose
It began just like any other day. I woke up to the bright sun shining through my curtains. Rubbing the
sleep out of my eyes, I stalked towards the kitchen to fix myself some breakfast. Even the low
churning of the coffee machine signaled that it too was begrudgingly waking up. After opening and
closing the refrigerator several times expecting something else to appear I settled for a simple bowl of
cereal. I washed down my Cheerios with the warm, freshly brewed coffee and made my way back to
my room. Upon entering, I noticed that I had several articles of clothing scattered across the floor.
However, due to the rules of my high school, I was required to wear a uniform. As I started putting on
my itchy polo shirt and my plaid, knee length skirt, I wondered if the rest of my day was going to go
well. So after I brushed my teeth and fixed my unruly hair, I got into my car and set out on my long
eight minute commute to school. Since I am on the yearbook staff, we had taken the opportunity to
participate in a yearbook convention at one of the local children s schools. I was so excited, partially
because I got to skip classes for the day, but also because I knew close to nothing about making a
yearbook. When I arrived at my school, I noticed how quiet it looked. Well, it was an hour before the
school actually opened, but it had sort of a peculiar, tranquil aura about it. After I parked and got out
of my car, I saw a couple of my fellow staff members

President Lyndon. B Johnson and the Vietnam War Essay
The conflict in Vietnam for the United States started when President Dwight D. Eisenhower went
along with the domino theory and sent in military advisors in South Vietnam to stop the communist
movement from taking place in South Vietnam. The Vietnam conflict was between the communist s
and the United States. North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh, and Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Cong, a
guerilla group to help spread communism. The United States were supporters of the South Vietnam
because they wanted them to maintain their government rather than falling to the domino theory of
communism. After Eisenhower s term ended John F. Kennedy became president and took control of

What made this even more difficult was that he had not given much attention to Vietnam or to foreign
affairs in general (Moise 30). For a nation like the United States in need of a decision on the fly, this
was very troubling. Earlier President Johnson felt that Harry Truman, in 1950, had erred by going into
the Korean War without getting firm commitment of support from the congress (Moise 226). In other
words it appeared to be that Johnson would be careful about getting involved in a conflict like
Vietnam. Being careful to say the least was not the case at all. There was not much serious thought in
escalating the Vietnam War until the Tonkin Gulf incident occurred. In the Gulf of Tonkin it was
reported that two American destroyers had been attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats on August 4,
1964, (Friedman 293). Shortly after these incidents, Johnson immediately escalated the war by
ordering airstrikes on North Vietnam (Friedman 293). These events made it so Johnson could raise
United States involvement in Vietnam without congressional backing on his decisions. Increasing
involvement in the war was appealing though because after the Tonkin Gulf incident support of
military involvement in North Vietnam raised from thirty one percent approvals to fifty percent
approval (Moise 226). Although approval of the amount in favor immediately after the Gulf of Tonkin
incident rose, it was a mistake on Johnson s part... assuming that the

Essay On Lingua Franca
This paper looks at the aspects of a lingua franca and its role in societies. Also, the adaptation of other
languages vocabulary and usage into the English language, and how English has impacted vocabulary
and grammar structures on other languages. Furthermore, it talks about the effects on minority
languages due to the continuous spread and dominance of English. Later, it touches upon some
positive aspects that it has brought into modern day life across the globe.
English as a Lingua Franca
Over centuries, the English language has evolved from the roots of other ancient languages including:
Latin, the Germanic languages, French, even Greek. Their influences are clear to see in its vocabulary
and spoken dialects, which have also adopted words into its lexicon. Most of the aforementioned have
their complexities, causing difficulties for students and scholars to learn as second languages.
However, English is a much simpler language to comprehend due to its limited inflections and
familiarity of spoken and written words. Thus, it has become the lingua franca for people around the
world and is taught in the classrooms of most non native speaking countries. As we can see in most
areas of international business and education, the dominance of English is growing at a rapid pace that

The continual spread and reach of the language brings cause for concern for those who feel that the
impact it has on culture, history and traditions of minorities due to its tendency to dominate all aspects
of societies if allowed. However, the usage of the native English language has not gone unaffected due
to cross dialect influences and the need to accommodate others by using non conventional structures.
The positive aspects are too many to mention, especially in the modern times of globalization and I
believe that the case for English as a lingua franca may always be

often struggles to accept their true identity. Characters struggle to either accept themselves or be

Respect and Accomplishment for African Americans Essay
The time span between 1954 and 2010 tells a story for African Americans. The timespan tells a story

even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had different views on ways to gain respect for the generations that

shared the same desires. Their similar desires were to lead blacks to higher positions, better life styles,

Summary
Zynga was the leader in the social game with the support of Facebook. The demographic
representation of the social games extends to women and elderly. The lack of creativity of Zynga
pushes the consumer away. This decline is also due to the fact Zynga had failed to change its strategy
toward the mobile platform. Zynga relies its sales on virtual goods, which are very limited and
difficult in the mobile environment. A lack of diversity to another social network and its subordination
to Facebook was also an issue. Zynga s relationship with Facebook, which imposes the use of
Facebook credits on its application, causes the collapse of the organization. Moreover, Zynga was

The strategy of Zynga is offer free games in order to sell virtual goods by exploiting the marketing

Despite its dependence on Facebook, Zynga would be a good marketing platform. First, Zynga has
300 million active users. Thus, Zynga controls large and diverse geographic and ethnic users that
extend to women and elderly. The company has the ability to target and segment customers. For this
reason, Zynga relies on data analytics to increase and retain online gamers. In consequences,
marketers will profit the same data analytics to increase sales.

Literature And Film From The Late Nineteenth- And Early...
In focusing on literature and film from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Somerville
demonstrates how emerging models of homo and heterosexuality at the turn of the twentieth century
were embedded within discourses of race and racialization, particularly bifurcated constructions of
black and white bodies (175). Noting that the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court case, in which
the government s right to determine an individual s racial identity was affirmed, emerged at the same
time as the discourse of sexology, Somerville explains that it was not merely a historical coincidence
that the classification of bodies as either homosexual or heterosexual emerged at the same time that
the United States was aggressively constructing and policing the boundary between black and white
bodies (3). Somerville argues that this new polarization of bodies and focus on desires reflected a
similar, simultaneous shift in racial thinking. Over the same time period, the cultural figure of the
mulatto gave way to a new vision of the races as natural opposites, and increasing numbers of legal
and social mechanisms were put into place to prevent people of different races from having sex with
one another. Thus the emergence of new sexual categories mirrored, and was profoundly influenced
by, the hardening of the color line, the stark division of Americans into strictly segregated categories
of black and white. One of the many strengths of

How the Increase of R Certified Movies is Impacting American Society Imagine a family walks into a
movie theater and is trying to figure out what movie they want to see; the mother wants to see the hot
new chick flick movie that is rated PG 13, the daughter wants to see the cute new children s movie
that is rated G, but the father has absolutely no interest in either and wants to go see the exciting new
R rated action movie. The family debates the issue at hand and analyzes whether the R rated movie is
appropriate for their daughter to watch. The first thing that must be understood is what qualifies a
movie for an R certification. This R certification can be issued because of many different reasons for
example; clear and convincing actively flowing blood (not a puddle or a bit of red makeup on an
actor), frequent use of vulgar language, nudity, and clear and convincing drug use (Rebecca, 2010). To
fully understand where the Motion Picture Association of America comes from with their
certifications, there must be some background knowledge of the former certification system called the
Hays Code. The Hays Code was implemented in 1930 and, while it may not be used anymore,
inspired the Motion Picture Association of America s certification system; the Hays Code is religion
based, several of the ideas have been reformed today, and moralistic in fact, one of the general
principals is No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it.

Reflection About Apathy
Students line the patterned red seats in the high school auditorium. While the speaker on stage bellows
his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some
snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one
impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable
because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not
escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the
classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort
possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material,
they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless.
This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. During my
junior year of high school, apathetic students and teachers led me to rediscover the power I have over
my own education. In my physics class, I was miserable: I did not learn I memorized. Although my
teacher had good intentions and a passion for the subject, he taught us terms and formulas, skirting
around fundamentals such as how these concepts connected to each other. Work equals the applied

but the most prominent are Nathaniel the magician, Kitty Jones the commoner, and the djinn

Canadian Constitution Act of 1982
I found myself thinking sociologically when I realized that equality in Canada is less practiced as what
the Canadian Constitution Act of 1982 claims. In this constitution, it is stated that every individual
should be treated equally regardless of their race, ethnicity, colour, religion, sex, age, and any
disability; however, in reality, individuals experience inequality in the form of racism throughout the
Canadian society. For instance, a few months ago, a black male was asked to leave the St. Laurent
shopping centre by the mall securities as the position of his pants were viewed as not family friendly
but this type of fashion is normal for teenagers who are influenced by the hip hop culture. As the man

Moreover, in 1940s, Canadian born, black students were not admitted in Canadian nursing schools
because of the idea that Canadian hospitals would not hire them. Thus, the author concludes that
Black nurses face racism today because of the historical exclusion and segmentation in the labour
market.
The authors, Gillian Creese and Tania Das Gupta, both demonstrate that equality is less pronounced
than the Canadian Constitution Act of 1982 states. Although these two articles were written on
different time periods in history, both articles display racism in the Canadian society, specifically at a
workplace. Creese focuses on the experiences of Chinese workers whereas Gupta investigates the
experiences of Black nurses. However, Creese s description of racism is more extreme than Gupta s,
which could indicate that there has been an improvement in equality in Canada. Regardless, these
articles prove that there is a difference between the promise made by the constitution and reality.

The Box Man Essay
Meaning
1. This essay implies to the reader that loneliness isn t always a vile thing. The author compares
somebody who has absolutely nothing in life but enjoys the solitude, to people who roam through life
alone, seeking for company but never find it. The author compares the chosen lifestyle of the box man,
to the undesired for loneliness of the victims. The author explains that although one may be poor and
alone, it does not mean that one is unhappy. For example, in paragraph 12 it is explained that the
mayor has offered him help, but the box man pushes it away. In paragraph 18 it is described how the
box man enjoys his dark life. It is portrayed that life is a solo journey and that one may be much more

These assumptions are proven when the author mentions all the different stages of the quest before
finally realizing that it is all to be wasted away in the second half of your life.
Method and Structure
1. The author uses rhetorical devices in her essay to develop the main idea throughout the paragraphs.
She explains her feelings towards loneliness by using allusions and anecdotes. Fox example, she
brings up a memory in her past. The boxcar children would be an example of an allusion.(Par 9) These
methods all eventually lead up to the author s point of view, and the main idea of course.
2. The way the essay is organized helps the reader understand the purpose of the essay much better.
The author begins by telling a story, and the reader has no idea what the meaning is. The author
continues telling stories, and then it all leads up to the author s point of view on loneliness.
Language
1. The author s main idea and purposes are revealed by a series of anecdotes and allusions. The author
gets very personal about the subject, as if she was going through the realization herself. You can see
her opinion by the way she refers to certain things. For example, the author brings up an old memory
from her childhood in paragraph nine. When she is describing the boxcar children, the words she uses

Convicts Vs Slavery In Australia
The experiences of slaves, free settlers and convicts differed greatly. Slaves and convicts were similar;
they had to do labour and had no freedom, whereas free settlers lived with freedom and peace.
A slave is a person who was the legal property of another person. In this context, they were Africans
that were abducted from their homes and shipped to North America. Slaves were poorly treated and
physically abused. Both men and women were treated like animals. Slaves had to do an obscene
amount of labour, often to exhaustion and sometimes until death. They usually had to do agricultural
work such as picking cotton, harvesting sugar cane, planting and harvesting rice, harvesting tobacco,
growing and harvesting coffee, building railroads, weaving, carpentry, washing clothes, cooking and
more. They had no control of what they had to do, as they had to obey their owners. The housing that
slaves lived in was atrocious. Slaves usually had to make their own homes. There were up to ten
slaves per hut. Their beds were made from straw or old rags. A quote from someone who has

Western European Explorations
The Western European expeditions of the 15th 18th centuries had a multitude of causes, religious
aims, desire for wealth, glory, and improvements in technology, it also caused a number of things,
such as colonial expansion and the Columbian exchange, use of slaves, and rise of capitalism and
mercantilism. It is often said that the European s chief motives for exploration were God, gold, and
glory . The Europeans set out in a missionary zeal and attempted to convert as many people, like the
Native Americans, to Christianity as they could and drive Muslims out of other lands. Another thing
that propelled the Europeans was the search for gold and other riches in far off lands through sea
routes. They hoped to obtain spices like nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, pepper, etc. and luxury

Consequently, all of the explorations spurred more colonial expansion efforts by the Western
European nations as they all competed for the better piece of land. One such colonial effort in America
resulted in the global transfer of plants, animals, disease, and food, the Columbian Exchange. As a
result of the deviation to the Native American population, creating a need for laborers, and the
growing desire for cash crops like sugar, cotton, and tobacco, slave trade saw a sharp increase. This
time period also saw the spread and intensification of capitalism, resulting from the growth of town
and city life and expansion of trade. Correspondingly, this acted as a catalyst in the rise of

Rape, Violence, And Feminist Networks
There has been a lot of discussion of rape within sociologists, criminologists, and feminist networks.
In my own words, rape is someone engaging with someone else sexually without their consent. Rape
is not strictly vaginal penetration, nor an exclusive heterosexual only act. If two people are in a
relationship or married, there is still no justification to the perpetrator for their act. In the 21st century,
although rape crimes have dropped 24.1% from 2001 to 2010, but not all rapes are reported (Eitzen,
Zinn, Smith, 2010). Curtis (1997) reported that 42% of rape victims do not tell anyone of their
assaults. There may be a number of reasons why victims don t speak out. Victims of rape typically fear
their own safety and lives if they speak out on it. Men who are victims typically don t report rapes
because it s considered demasculizing to their gender. Rape victims are traumatized for life, they live
with the burden, as their perpetrators walk away free (Curtis, 1997). NPR s Rachel Martin interviewed
author, Jon Krakauer, and they discussed Krakauer s new book on the issue of acquaintance rape.
Curtis (1997) defines acquaintance rape in the situation that the victim knows their assaulter. With the
main subject being acquaintance rape, Krakauer s book focuses on this college town, Missoula, in
Montana. Krakauer tells Martin that 230 rapes have occurred in Missoula, without prosecution (NPR,
2015). From there, Krakauer talks about one of those cases.

Examples Of Online-Driven Marketing
to many others. These type companies purchase this information in order to sell and advertise products
explicitly to this type customer, based on their interests and personal data details. These people also
feel intruded on when their personal information is sold to businesses that they never gave approval to.
Online driven marketing is the most famous use of collected personal data. There is, however, a
growing apprehension and a captivating backlash from the public over online targeted advertising.
One of the more blemished examples of the public uproar from online targeted advertising is Amazon
dynamic pricing system (Taylor, 2014, p. 17). This company s professional business model was made
to actually watch their consumer data ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stealing one s identity and also stealing one s person information actually continues to occur in leaps
and bounds every year. These occurrences cause customers to lose large amounts of money as well as
it is costing them their privacy. Consumers then become distraught with the companies that collected
their personal information which actually led to the data breach and discipline them in the market
(Beckett, 2014, p. para.1)
Conclusion
The gathering of personal data does unfortunately also have many benefits for both the consumers and
business, but when used dishonorably they can become very concerning and harmful to the actual
consumer. However, consumers who do visit these websites and then knowingly consent to allow that
corporation to collect their personal data for marketing purposes has been proven to benefit all parties
involved. By doing this it allows the specific company be able to follow interests and purchases of the
customer and then to provide these customers with personalized advertisements and recommendations
that may increase the possibility that the consumer will spend more with the business. It also benefits
the customer by providing them with specific goods and services that could in the long run, increase
their quality of life and that they may not have known about otherwise. It also can create a better
customer knowledge for the particular consumer by

  • 2. Audre Lorde Research Papers Audre Lorde was born on February 18, 1934 in New York City to immigrant parents from the West Indies. She learned to talk, read, and write somewhere around the age of four and wrote her first poem in eighth grade, which was then published in Seventeen magazine. In 1962, Lorde married a man named Edward Rollins and had two children before they divorced in 1970. However, in 1968 she moved to Tougaloo, Mississippi and met her long term partner, Frances Clayton. Her earliest poems were often romantic, but in the 1960s became more politically centered due to the amount of civil unrest combined with confusion over her own sexuality. At the time many of her poems were written, more than one fifth of the nation lived below the poverty line, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of feminist criticism began in the 1960s, right around the time Lorde wrote and published much of her work. She used feminist theory as a way to undermine traditional patriarchal systems and unite women in a struggle against discrimination, oppression, racism, sexism, and patriarchy. Her writing aims to examine and promote women s interests, as well as help women of various backgrounds identify with one another through their commonality of systemic oppression and their desire for basic human rights. In Lorde s words, I am defined as other in every group I m part of . This phrase is a product of our society s notion that to be different means one can not associate oneself with any given group unless they fit wholly into that and nothing else. As Lorde puts it, It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences. Lorde was known to have criticized some feminists during the 1960s for focusing on the specific experiences of white middle class women rather than women as a diverse group. Through her work, she has observed that black women s experiences are often vastly different from those of white women, and because being a white woman is considered normal, black women are often marginalized and cast out of the woman identity . This is similar to the way lesbians are considered to be against feminism for not fitting the mold of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mexican American Women In the early 1940s, America was entering the second world war, and the female community was reaching new heights in the labor force. Millions of hard working women filled men s positions as men joined the military, operating complex machinery in factories, farms, and on the road. During this time, the opportunities and need for labor in the United States opened occupational opportunities for Mexican immigrants. Some Mexican families settled in the county of Los Angeles, making a home for their future generations. Many second generation, Mexican American youth, more specifically those known as zoot suiters and pachuco(a)s, refused to, abide by the norms of segregation, creating a new, rebellious identity that defied all social expectation, (Escobedo 136). The pachuca women of World War II challenged societies labels and their communities traditions, creating their own individual, outrageous and flamboyant ideas of beauty and lifestyle. These actions took Anglo and Mexican immigrant communities by shock. Because of the unfamiliarity of the pachuca lifestyle, they both responded negatively, each accusing the other for their outlandish behavior. The expectations for the second generation Mexican American female were high. Their families not only expressed the importance of sticking to their traditions and cultures, but they also relied on their future generations to maintain a good name and reputation for the Mexican immigrant community. The young Mexican American women, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

President Lincoln had basically notified the South Carolina Governor that he was sending a ship with provisions to Fort Sumter, which is off the coast of Charleston, but actually the ship was armed with troops. Confederate intelligence had intercepted this knowledge beforehand and they had six men of war ships outside to intercept the ship. General Beauregard of the Confederate army was given direct order from President Davis to demand immediate evacuation of Sumter and to use force if there was no compliance. The Union Major Anderson ignored the commands and on April 12, 1861, the Civil War had officially begun when Confederate troops bombarded Sumter. Anderson shortly surrendered and sent the message to the North that is was no longer time for diplomatic solutions. Davis felt Lincoln had maneuvered the south into firing the first shot and Davis said The assault was made by sending a hostile fleet. Davis was forced to take active measures for defense when Lincoln declared war on the South on April 15th and gathered many grateful volunteers who were glad to fight for there cause. • 7. The Importance Of Diversity In Language Learning Our understanding of language, as languages educators becomes part of our professional stance and, as such, influences our curriculum, planning and classroom pedagogies. Teachers who view language simply as code make acquiring grammar and vocabulary the primary, if not the only, goal of language learning. Within such a limited approach, students do not begin to engage with language as a communicative reality but simply as an intellectual exercise or as a work requiring memorising. It is primarily a conventional symbol system concerned with communication or coorperation between people (Lyons, 1981) Individual and social (Gee Hayes, 2011) people talk like others and yet all have their own style (Bakhtin, 1981, 1986). Every language shares the same basic design properties nouns, verbs, sentences, and clauses (Chomsky, 1965). Language is not just a set of rules that tells us how to talk with the correct grammar. A cognitive phenomenon a set of rules in our minds or brains that tells us how to speak grammatically (Clark, 1996) and Cannot be thought of as only a system of formal elements; have to take into account its functions (Brumfit, 1994) Variety is the spice of life . Immigrants have always been the friendly strangers who ve come to enjoy America s freedom with ambitious mindsets. However, as soon as the immigrants started affecting the future of true Americans, these friendly strangers instantly were seen as evil intruders. The rumors spread of the evil doings of immigrants, which lead to the presumption that immigrants only had wrong intentions when migrating to our country. Many Americans sought to find a reason to kick the immigrants out of their country because the immigrants migrating had no benefits to them. The presumption of immigrants consisted of the facts that they took jobs from others or were threats to the well being of America. In order to protect American citizens from these alleged wrongdoings, the government chose to limit the amount of immigrants through acts, such as the National Origins Act and the Emergency Quota Act. Furthermore, the government used the ideas rooted from fear and greed of the surrounding citizens to inspire this idea of setting up limitations, which led to to the abhorrent treatment of immigrants in the 1920 s. The Vietnam conflict was between the communist s and the United States. North Vietnam was led by Ho Chi Minh, and Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Cong, a guerilla group to help spread communism. The United States were supporters of the South Vietnam because they wanted them to maintain their government rather than falling to the domino theory of communism. After Eisenhower s term ended John F. Kennedy became president and took control of the situation of Vietnam but on November 22, 1963, Kennedy was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What made this even more difficult was that he had not given much attention to Vietnam or to foreign affairs in general (Moise 30). For a nation like the United States in need of a decision on the fly, this was very troubling. Earlier President Johnson felt that Harry Truman, in 1950, had erred by going into the Korean War without getting firm commitment of support from the congress (Moise 226). In other words it appeared to be that Johnson would be careful about getting involved in a conflict like Vietnam. Being careful to say the least was not the case at all. There was not much serious thought in escalating the Vietnam War until the Tonkin Gulf incident occurred. In the Gulf of Tonkin it was reported that two American destroyers had been attacked by North Vietnamese PT boats on August 4, 1964, (Friedman 293). Shortly after these incidents, Johnson immediately escalated the war by ordering airstrikes on North Vietnam (Friedman 293). These events made it so Johnson could raise United States involvement in Vietnam without congressional backing on his decisions. Increasing involvement in the war was appealing though because after the Tonkin Gulf incident support of military involvement in North Vietnam raised from thirty one percent approvals to fifty percent approval (Moise 226). Although approval of the amount in favor immediately after the Gulf of Tonkin incident rose, it was a mistake on Johnson s part... assuming that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Essay On Lingua Franca This paper looks at the aspects of a lingua franca and its role in societies. Also, the adaptation of other languages vocabulary and usage into the English language, and how English has impacted vocabulary and grammar structures on other languages. Furthermore, it talks about the effects on minority languages due to the continuous spread and dominance of English. Later, it touches upon some positive aspects that it has brought into modern day life across the globe. English as a Lingua Franca Over centuries, the English language has evolved from the roots of other ancient languages including: Latin, the Germanic languages, French, even Greek. Their influences are clear to see in its vocabulary and spoken dialects, which have also adopted words into its lexicon. Most of the aforementioned have their complexities, causing difficulties for students and scholars to learn as second languages. However, English is a much simpler language to comprehend due to its limited inflections and familiarity of spoken and written words. Thus, it has become the lingua franca for people around the world and is taught in the classrooms of most non native speaking countries. • 33. Literature And Film From The Late Nineteenth- And Early... In focusing on literature and film from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Somerville demonstrates how emerging models of homo and heterosexuality at the turn of the twentieth century were embedded within discourses of race and racialization, particularly bifurcated constructions of black and white bodies (175). Noting that the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court case, in which the government s right to determine an individual s racial identity was affirmed, emerged at the same time as the discourse of sexology, Somerville explains that it was not merely a historical coincidence that the classification of bodies as either homosexual or heterosexual emerged at the same time that the United States was aggressively constructing and policing the boundary between black and white bodies (3). Somerville argues that this new polarization of bodies and focus on desires reflected a similar, simultaneous shift in racial thinking. Over the same time period, the cultural figure of the mulatto gave way to a new vision of the races as natural opposites, and increasing numbers of legal and social mechanisms were put into place to prevent people of different races from having sex with one another. Thus the emergence of new sexual categories mirrored, and was profoundly influenced by, the hardening of the color line, the stark division of Americans into strictly segregated categories of black and white. The family debates the issue at hand and analyzes whether the R rated movie is appropriate for their daughter to watch. The first thing that must be understood is what qualifies a movie for an R certification. This R certification can be issued because of many different reasons for example; clear and convincing actively flowing blood (not a puddle or a bit of red makeup on an actor), frequent use of vulgar language, nudity, and clear and convincing drug use (Rebecca, 2010). To fully understand where the Motion Picture Association of America comes from with their certifications, there must be some background knowledge of the former certification system called the Hays Code. The Hays Code was implemented in 1930 and, while it may not be used anymore, inspired the Motion Picture Association of America s certification system; the Hays Code is religion based, several of the ideas have been reformed today, and moralistic in fact, one of the general principals is No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. • 35. Reflection About Apathy Students line the patterned red seats in the high school auditorium. While the speaker on stage bellows his gospel of forgiveness, some students halfheartedly nod along, some stare at their shoes, and some snore. Looking around the chapel from my seat in the back row, I am overwhelmed with one impression: apathy. This mood that hung in the room was pervasive, making me feel uncomfortable because I realized that I felt it too. While I usually enjoy learning for its own sake, apathy has not escaped me. Not only does this mindset manifest in my school s chapel services, but also in the classroom. When students do not care about learning, they either put in the least amount of effort possible or resort to rote memorization to maintain their grade. Instead of understanding the material, they glean little knowledge that they can apply to their lives, making education relatively pointless. This thoughtlessness maddens me because I want to be purposeful in everything that I do. During my junior year of high school, apathetic students and teachers led me to rediscover the power I have over my own education. In my physics class, I was miserable: I did not learn I memorized. In this constitution, it is stated that every individual should be treated equally regardless of their race, ethnicity, colour, religion, sex, age, and any disability; however, in reality, individuals experience inequality in the form of racism throughout the Canadian society. In my own words, rape is someone engaging with someone else sexually without their consent. Rape is not strictly vaginal penetration, nor an exclusive heterosexual only act. If two people are in a relationship or married, there is still no justification to the perpetrator for their act. In the 21st century, although rape crimes have dropped 24.1% from 2001 to 2010, but not all rapes are reported (Eitzen, Zinn, Smith, 2010). Curtis (1997) reported that 42% of rape victims do not tell anyone of their assaults. There may be a number of reasons why victims don t speak out. Victims of rape typically fear their own safety and lives if they speak out on it. Men who are victims typically don t report rapes because it s considered demasculizing to their gender. Rape victims are traumatized for life, they live with the burden, as their perpetrators walk away free (Curtis, 1997). NPR s Rachel Martin interviewed author, Jon Krakauer, and they discussed Krakauer s new book on the issue of acquaintance rape. Curtis (1997) defines acquaintance rape in the situation that the victim knows their assaulter.
