This document discusses the formula used to calculate how far someone can see from the surface of different planets on a clear day. The formula takes into account the radius of the planet and the height of the observer. Using this formula and an observation distance of 7 miles, the document calculates the required height on each planet to see 7 miles. The required heights range from 2.9 feet on Jupiter to 85.3 feet on Mercury.
2. The formula used to find out how far you can see on a clear day on each of the planets is: d= sqrt(rh/2640). R is the radius of each of the planets. D is the distance you can see from the surface of the planet on a clear day. H is the height you have to be to see a certain amount of distance. In these slides the distance will be 7 miles and we will be solving for the height someone has to be to see that far from the surface of each planet on a clear day. The Formula
3. Mercury 7= sqrt(1516h/2640) Because 1516h/2640 is under a radical we square both sides. 49= 1516h/2640 Then multiply 2640 to both sides. 129360= 1516h After that divide 1516 from both sides. 85.3=h So, you have to be 85.3 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Mercury on a clear day.
4. Neptune 7= sqrt(15389h/2640) Once again we square both sides. 49= 15389h/2640 We then multiply 2640 to both sides. 129360= 15389h Then we divide 15389 from both sides. 8.4=h You would have to be 8.4 feet to see 7 miles from the surface of Neptune on a clear day.
5. Jupiter 7= sqrt(44423h/2640) First, we need to square both sides. 49=44423h/2640 Next, multiply 2640 to both sides. 129360=44423h Then divide 44423 from both sides of the equation. 2.9=h You have to be 2.9 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Jupiter on a clear day.
6. Saturn 7= sqrt(37449h/2640) First, square both sides to get rid of the radical. 49=37449h/2640 Then, multiply 2640 to both sides to get rid of it. 129360=37449h Lastly, divide 37449 from both sides to find h. 3.5=h You must be 3.5 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Saturn on a clear day.
7. Uranus 7= sqrt(15881h/2640) First, square both sides. 49= 15881h/2640 Next, multiply 2640 to both sides. 129360= 15881h Then, divide 15881 from both sides. 8.1=h You must be 8.1 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Uranus on a clear day.
8. Venus 7= sqrt(3760.5h/2640) Square both sides of the equation. 49=3760.5h/2640 Multiply 2640 to both sides of the equation. 129360=3760.5h Divide 3760.5 from both sides of the equation. 22.5=h You must be 22.5 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Venus on a clear day.
9. Mars 7=sqrt(2111h/2640) Square both sides of the equation. 49=2111h/2640 Then, multiply 2640 to both sides of the equation. 129360=2111h Next, divide 2111 from both sides of the equation. 61.3=h You must be 61.3 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Mars on a clear day.
10. Earth 7= sqrt(3936h/2640) First, square both sides of the equation. 49=3936h/2640 Then, multiply 2640 to both sides of the equation. 129360= 3936h Next, divide 3936 from both sides of the equation. 32.8=h You must be 32.8 feet tall to see 7 miles from the surface of Earth on a clear day.
