6. Theseus In The Maze Runner
The book and recent movie adaptation, The Maze Runner, is strongly related to the life
of Theseus and more specifically the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur in the labyrinth. The
relationship and the similarities are clearly demonstrated through Thomas s character and
personality while comparing him to Theseus. The main characters are not the only aspect of this
series that is influenced by Greek mythology; the animals, or grievers are a representation of
the Minotaur and the challenges they present to the children. Also, simply based on the title, the
setting is another indisputable connection to the myth of the labyrinth.
The plot of the book is where one can notice the most obvious connections to the myth.
For example, the story centers around young boys ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

discrepancies occur, such as the time spans or the genders of the children, it is undeniable that
this story is almost completely based off of the Greek myth. Some other general plot similarities
include; the minotaur/griever attacks on the children, the heroes voluntary choice to go against
the animals, and the 50/50 body composition of the animals Minotaur is half human and half
animal while the grievers are half animal and half human made machine.
Taking a deeper look at the main character, Thomas, we see many characteristics that
would be considered heroic ones in the Greek and Roman times. The most evident connection
is through their willingness to risk their lives. Although Thomas did not volunteer to go to the
Glade as Theseus had, he did chose to go inside the maze and risk his life there among the
grievers in the hopes of finding an escape. Their bravery connects them in multiple ways,

8. Psychopathology Diagnostic Classification Systems ( Dsm )...
This paper agrees with the statement psychopathology diagnostic classification systems (such as the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification of
Diseases (ICD)) are of little use to health professionals and patients because behaviours are often
misidentified and medicalised . To support this argument, this paper will discuss the most important
four main points that contribute to the subjective judgement of DSM and the limitations in validity,
reliability and utility of DSM: subjectivity of DSM, medicalisation of psychiatric disorders, influence
of pharmaceutical industry and cultural bias. A concern of the DSM is that all diagnostic criteria in
DSM are based on symptoms that are largely subjective and descriptive as DSM does not provide lists
of signs, as criteria for diagnosis (Johnstone, 2008). Such subjectivity of DSM poses a challenge even
for experienced clinicians who use the DSM and ICD criteria and also cause diagnostic unreliability. It
is argued by Johnstone (2008) that psychiatric symptoms without signs cannot be evidence of a
particular condition. The How Mad Are You? video by Liddell Jay (2008) supports the claim that the
subjectivity of DSM criteria creates low reliability and validity for a majority of the patients. In this
video, there were ten volunteers who participated in this study, of which five had a history of
psychiatric disorders and five with no history of psychiatric disorders. A

9. Pride In Hamlet Essay
The battle between pride, an emotional force of confidence, and fate, a supernatural force that controls
every aspect of humans lives, is ongoing in every human. To live an honorable and honest life, people
must balance their pride and humility, but when pride becomes excessive, fate begins to assert power
on the person until the person meets the inevitable collapse. Thomas Hardy, in The Return of the
Native, and William Shakespeare, in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, discuss the
controlling power of supernatural forces. In The Return of the Native, Egdon Heath controls the lives
of its inhabitants by exhibiting power over the supernatural force of fate. Clym Yeobright s excessive
pride in his ambitious endeavor causes his blindness which symbolizes his regression from the
advanced society of Paris to the primitive nature of Egdon Heath. Similarly, Eustacia Vye s pride in
what she calls passionate love (Hardy 74) causes her death as she resists her fate. In William
Shakespeare s, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, Denmark s restrictive powers force
Hamlet to face a moral dilemma between pride and fate which ultimately leads to ... Show more

Clym s literal blindness is an instance of self destruction caused by his intense pride in his idealistic
goal to create a school (Howe 18). To accelerate the creation of the school, Clym reads in the dark
which causes his literal blindness. Although his pride completely blocks his rational thinking, Clym s
figurative blindness gives him insight into the reality of life: fate controls everything in the world.
Even though he understands his position in the world, it is too late for Clym to repair his mistake of
disturbing nature. His blindness forces him to abandon his idealistic plan and become a furze cutter.

The core arguments of Hershey Company in this case are very clearly stated. Senator Steve Hershey
used their company s Trade Dress on multiple campaign signs for multiple elections. In 2002, Mr.
Hershey was running for commissioner of Queen Anne s County in Maryland. He used a design for
his campaign that looked very similar to a Hershey s chocolate bar wrapper. The background was
brown, the lettering was white, and the font was bolded in all capital letters. In 2010, Steve Hershey
used a design that looked even more similar to a Hershey s chocolate bar wrapper than the one he had
used previously. This campaign sign had a brown background, white bolded font, all capital letters,
and included a white border. In 2014, Steve Hershey used a campaign logo with a two toned brown
Maryland flag background, his last name in all capital bolded letters, similar font, and underneath
read, state senate. Despite having the same name, Steve Hershey is not affiliated with The Hershey
Company in any way. The Hershey Company believed that Steve Hershey s use of their Trade Dress
could cause confusion amongst the general public. When the Hershey Company contacted Steve
Hershey for the first time in 2002, they wrote him a letter asking him to stop using the Hershey s
Trade Dress. In 2010, The Hershey Company contacted Mr. Hershey again and urged him to stop
using their Trade Dress, but they allowed him to use those campaign signs for the primary election
only. The Hershey Company and Mr.

14. Essay about Transformation of Homewood West Community
Homewood West is located on the eastern side of Pittsburgh and is one of the three neighborhoods that
make up the Homewood community, along with Homewood North and Homewood South.
Homewood West was once a thriving neighborhood with an abundance of upper class families and an
economy that depended heavily on the city s railroad system, that made economic opportunities
readily available and housing that was affordable and convenient (Allegheny County DHS 2010).
African Americans were the first to inhabit Homewood, However many whites moved into the
neighborhood, causing tension within the community, during a time period where racism was still a
major factor in society. According to the Allegheny DHS (2010), by 1910, Homewood s population ...

Now, Homewood West has a total population of 818 people, which has steadily declined since the
1950 s (U.S. Census 2010). This transformation has had some major effects on this neighborhood,
making economic opportunities hard to find. A lack of quality education, and high crime rates have
caused businesses to leave the area, creating vacant buildings and broken down homes, lowering the
value of properties and the hopes of bringing businesses back to the community. Residents in
Homewood are affected by all these things and have the community at a standstill, looking for ways to
fix them.
Demographics and Crime
My first perception of Homewood made me a little nervous about the idea of going into a
neighborhood with such a high crime rate, especially being a kid from a suburban area with mostly
white middle class families. Going into a neighborhood that was 95.6 percent black was definitely out
of my comfort zone (U.S. Census 2010). My perception of Homewood quickly changed however,
once I started to talk to people there. To my surprise, many were well educated and very welcoming,
and ambitious people, striving to make the community better. Many of them noted the issues in the
neighborhood, and stated that they had a lot of work to do but they made me leave Homewood West
with hope.
As I started my journey into Homewood, I made my way down Franktown Avenue past the YWCA I
started to see differences from the city and why a lot of residents are struggling to make

The Scarlet Letter, is most often referred to as Nathaniel Hawthorne s best work. It gives a detailed
image of life in a Puritan society. The heroine of the book Hester Prynne, defies power, and rebels
against colonial rule. Laws composed of religious convictions and individual beliefs. Through Hester s
action, you can depict a feminist consciousness. She differs from traditional colonial woman who s
sole purpose it to be obedient, despite the unfair rules carried out by puritan men. Hester represents a
new female image centering on her own religious spirit, self reliance, and strong mind. Hester
represents the pure meaning of feminism, which here, has a positive meaning. She encourages todays
women to fight for gender equality. Massachusetts Bay colony was a man s world (History of

Women could not attend town meetings, or vote in the churches elections, even the sermons were

seemed that men were subject to praise more often than woman were. Women were even often

Honesty explaining the death in simple yet honest terms will help your child in the long run. Lying or

22. Roles Of A Grand Son
Roles are the parts that individuals play in society. Every single human being on earth has their own
unique set of roles. There are two kinds of roles, Ascribed, and achieved. An ascribed role, is a role
that people are born into, examples include the role of a grand son, or a Canadian. Achieved roles, are
roles that a person has to work to acquire, examples include; a teacher, or a politician. Two roles that I
currently possess are a university student, and a daughter. Being a daughter is an important role that I
play. The role of a daughter is an ascribed role, I know this because I did not have to work for it. I was
simply born into the role. As a daughter, I have plenty of important responsibilities. These
responsibilities are; loving and caring for my parents, helping as much around the house as I can while
I live there, and making sure I stay in contact with my parents when I am no longer living with them.
Along with the list of responsibilities I have when it comes to being a daughter, the role also comes
with a set of rights. These rights include love and protection, help with learning about the world
around me, and a house, and food until I am at least 18. The role of being a daughter plays a key role
in socialization and social belonging. My parents were my source of early attachment. Most
importantly, my parents were my primary agents of socialization. They taught me the language I
speak, my values, and norms. As a daughter, my parents culture was

23. Analysis Of The Diary Of A Young Girl
The Diary of a Young Girl is a raw account that expresses the true fear and confusion of the
Holocaust. The Franks lived in a little bubble during the span in the diary; they knew and could see
events happening but couldn t imagine what was inside the concentration camps until they
experienced it themselves. Many people felt this way before the war, and luckily the Franks were able
to delay being sent the camps by a few years. The Franks and the other inhabitants of the Annex were
a miracle. They were one of the few that were able to pull off hiding from the Nazis for extended time
and were still able to share their story. Though their life might have been heavenly compared to the
dreadful deaths in the camps, there were tough challenges they had to face, their relationships tensions
rose dramatically, and watching the outside world disappear beneath their eyes was painful. Some
might say they had it lucky, but Anne didn t always agree. Despite the fact that they were fortunate in
hiding, there were many challenges that they had to succumb to. Since the Secret Annex was still an
office during the war, there were constant visitors and any crucial move or sound could expose their
cover. Black out curtains were also necessary as any bystander could look through the window and see
them when they left a long time ago. Even flushing the toilet was a big risk the pipelines flowed
directly through the warehouse and would make noise when activated. Staying inside as well as
wandering outside had risks too. The residents of the Secret Annex, just like members of concentration
camps, easily fell to sicknesses. There was no filtration of the air and the cramped spaces made them
more vulnerable to disease. Though Mr. Pfeffer was a dentist, they had no other access to
physicians/doctors. Food was also an issue. Though the Franks, van Pels, and Mr. Pfeffer were pretty
privileged, food was again limited. It would be taunting to know they have utensils and heat sources
but nothing to make. Rations were provided for a while, but they were lacking in value. One St. Nick s
Day, they were lucky enough to receive an extra quarter pound of butter a true blessing. Nothing was
taken for granted, though arguments were

Scientist have been researching on the effect of watching television, but generally focused how
watching violence on television have correlation with real life violence. Psychologist and psychiatrist
defines the term TV addition as spending an unusually large amount of time using a substance
dependence as a disorder characterized by criteria that include spending a great deal of time using the
substance; using it more often than one intends; thinking about reducing use or making repeated
unsuccessful efforts to reduce use; giving up important social, family or occupational activities to use

Engaging more in family conversations which include visiting cousins, family members. Over the
time, my cousins and I were spending time more often than usual weekend nights. Spending time
friends also meant meeting up with buddies and enjoying the day. For example, after the first week of
the project we went to play football in the park. Reading books was another way of coping with
craving TV addiction, I read mostly graphic books because it will keep me engaged longer than
novels. In addition, if I was successful in a day I treated myself with homemade yogurt parfaits and if

watching the TV so much. The new remedies were a remarkable process for me as it enabled to gain a

25. The Old Man And The Library
Proverbs are commonly used in Africa are signifiers that help identifies the characteristics and values
of a certain culutre. They are usually simple but provide the reader or listener with an image that
requires reflection for the individual and the society from which it originates. The African proverb,
when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down illustrates the importance of wisdom, age,
and experience. This proverb highlights the necessity from preserving historical knowledge and the
devastation that comes with losing that knowledge. Libraries are symbols of education and
information typically containing works of written history whereas the old man who is in juxtaposition
with the library has preserved historical information in his memory, the library in his mind. By placing
the old man and the library as equals, the African proverbs is stating the importance of human wisdom
and the passing of history through the mouths of wise men to youthful ears. This proverb is
reminiscent of the importance of oral history in many African cultures, one being the ancient Mali
Empire. D.T. Niane s version of the Old Mali epic discusses the importance of the griot, or oral
historians, and places the emphasis and priority on the griot, rather than the kings. The griots were the
libraries and when they died, much of the information they possessed would die as well, unless it was
passed on to another griot. The symbolism in this proverb can then be taken quite literally

27. The Origin Of The Aboriginal Noongar People
In the south west of Western Australia lay over a dozen tribes of the Noongar people. The aboriginal
Noongar tribe is one of the largest Aboriginal cultural blocks in Australia, and their names stems from
the meaning of the original inhabitants of the south west of Western Australia. The Noongar people are
deeply, spiritually connected to the earth, nature, and their ancestral past through what they call the
dreaming , or dreamtime . For Aboriginals, the Dreamtime is how their cultural knowledge is formed
and how they understand the creation of the world, passed down traditionally through oral telling and
stories. The Dreamtime is the world of their ancestors and how the spirits were born out of darkness.
One of the most well known deities/spirits and its corresponding origin story is that of the Waugal, or
the Rainbow Serpent.
The serpent is believed to be the first thing that moved across the land, making the paths in the land
such as dunes, rivers, mountains, valleys, and where the serpent stopped to rest is where lakes and
bodies of water were formed. The Noongar recognize the Waugal as the giver of life because it mainly
created waterways to provide for the people.
The story of the Waugal comes with a story of the creation of the earth, when it was dark, flat, and
featureless. The serpent is said to have awakened, aware of what would happen when he becomes real,
because how could the serpent be able to shape the earth if he was no hands or feet? Suddenly, as

30. Entrepreneurship Is A Field Of Business
Over the years, entrepreneurship is a field of business that has been growing rapidly. Although the
concept of entrepreneurship is highly debated on what it is exactly, in a simple way it is acting on one
s knowledge and thoughts and developing those into innovations, which in the end will improve the
world and in return hopefully allow the entrepreneur to receive a gain in either a monetary or non
monetary sense. Within entrepreneurship, there are many different fields to this broad business
platform. Since I am a collegiate basketball player and have been surrounded by sports my entire life,
I have decided to focus on entrepreneurship within the sports industry. Again, this is growing rapidly
along with entrepreneurship, however, if one would research this specific field of entrepreneurship,
they would find that it is a young practice. In this paper, I will be focusing on the owners in the NBA
specifically comparing and contrasting the newer owners verses the older owners. Primarily most of
the newer owners are younger guys who made most of their money in uncertain business deals that led
to large profits. Thus, they are successful entrepreneurs who took their skills and prior knowledge and
applied that to the NBA. On the other hand, older NBA owners provide an old school business
approach, which is usually based off instincts and knowledge of the game. Therefore, the issue I will
be discussing will regard owning a NBA team, which I will go in depth to talk about why the

33. How Does Prospero Change Throughout The Tempest
By my so potent art. But this rough magic I here abjure, (V.i. ). Throughout Shakespeare s play The
Tempest, the main character Prospero refers to his magic, and it is through his magical abilities that
the story is set in motion. In the play, Prospero controls characters and events, much like a playwright
does. Shakespeare created Prospero as a guise for himself, through similarities in personality,
manipulation abilities, and environment, to demonstrate and reflect on his literary abilities before
bidding farewell to the theater.
Shakespeare could have created Prospero by incorporating elements of his personality and life into
Prospero. Shakespeare came from a good family, his mother was the heiress to a land and his father
was a bailiff in Stratford. Since his father was a town official education was free, and Shakespeare was
sent to a good quality grammar school. There, he learned to read, write, and speak Latin. (William
Shakespeare). Shakespeare would have studied 10 hours a day, six days a week, mostly Latin by rote.

35. Lab Report On Gram Negative Bacteria
In this experiment individuals were given a plate with two unknown specimens. Each group
completed a gram stain followed by a series of other test in order to identify the unknown bacteria.
Each student conducted separate testing s on one unknown in order to specifically identify the strain.
Materials and Methods
First and foremost the gram stain is conducted to differentiate gram positive bacteria from gram
negative bacteria due to their cell structure. The thick layer of peptidoglycan in gram positive bacteria
allows the crystal violet dye to retain a purple color, whereas, the thin peptidoglycan in gram negative
bacteria is decolorized and counter stained with safranin red in order to be viewed in the microscope.
(1) The gram stain procedure begins with a clean slide and a sterile loop. A drop of water is applied to
the slide followed by a pinhead size of unknown bacteria. The slide air dries and then is heat fixed
with a Bunsen burner. Subsequently, the crystal violet is applied to the smear, followed by the
mordant, Gram s iodine. Next, the decolorizer is applied then washed. Finally safranin is applied to
the smear and also washed. The slide is blot dried with bibulous paper and ready for the microscope.
However, to ensure a good visual, oil immersion is applied to increase the resolution. Following the
gram stain is the catalase test, which is utilized to determine if a specimen is streptococcus or
staphylococcus. A sample of bacteria is placed on a slide and combined with a few drops of peroxide.
For further testing, a blood agar plate is inoculated for rapid identification methods for Streptococcus.
Each strain of Strep. is sensitive to only one test on the rapid I.D method, therefore enabling a process
of elimination. The procedure is as follows, forty percent of the unknown is applied to the top portion
of the agar. Subsequently, three antibiotic discs, Bacitracin A disc, Optochin P disc, and SXT disc are
situated along the unknown bacteria. Afterwards, a horizontal line of Staph. Aureus is drawn along the
bottom of the agar. Next, a vertical line is drawn from the unknown bacteria to top of the Staph.
Aureus, ensuring the vertical line does not touch the Staph. Proceeding

INTERNET FOR EVERYONE J. Strika, L. Hollingsworth A. Johnson, J. Hermitt
Introduction There have been moments in history where the invention of new technology has
completely rewired the way our society lives and works. The printing press, radio, television, mobile
phones and the Internet are among these. In the coming decades, we will see the greatest revolution
yet, as billions of people connect to the Internet for the first time (Zuckerberg, 2014).
Since the turn of the century, the telecommunications industry has invested trillions of dollars to
deploy a robust network of cables, satellites, and microwave towers across countries and continents in

For example, SpaceX projects their satellite internet access revenues will dwarf their space launches
by 2021, reaching $30BN in annual revenue by 2025 (Winkler Singleton, 2017). And Alphabet s X
research arm estimates that annual revenues from their balloon based Internet venture could reach
$10BN (Popper, 2015). Despite his alluded benevolence, Mark Zuckerberg confirms that capitalism is
alive at Facebook:
You offer a little bit of the Internet free, and more people start using data, and more people can access
the Internet and access these tools, but also more people start paying for data once they understand
what they would use the Internet for, and
These operators end up making more money, and it ends up being more profitable for everyone. This
will work if providing free basic services actually ends up being a way for them to get more paying
customers and more people online (Chang Frier, 2015).
For Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and others, new Internet users are potential new services users.
New users increase the amount of data collected, which is then in turn used to attract advertisers.
Why Solve This Problem? The Societal Perspective
While we are not so callow as to envision universal Internet access alone as a panacea for global
poverty, the underlying societal benefits provide evidence that many of those without access
