Who's the Real Monster?
The story of Frankenstein was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in the year 1818. The story depicts the life of the character Victor Frankenstein,
who spends years creating an unnamed creature. Victor abandons the creature the moment he awakens and the creature is then left to live life on his
own because is rejected by humanity. The creature kills several people and eventually leads to Victor's indirect death. Throughout the story, the
creature is depicted as a hideous, monstrous and evil creature, while Victor is depicted as the victim of his wrath. At first glance, the creature seems
like the bigger monster of the story, but as we begin to view it from a deeper perspective we discover a different side. In this essay, I plan to argue that
contrary to popular belief, Victor Frankenstein is the real monster of the story.
The Oxford Dictionary defines the word monster as an "An inhumanly cruel or wicked person." There were many cruel and wicked things that
Victor did to the creature. Firstly, Victor decided to give the creature a hideous body. Why would he not create his specimen to be beautiful and well
formed in every way? It was cruelty on the behalf of Victor to hideously deform his creation. He made his creature to be a hideously deformed monster
which every human being shunned. Throughout the story Victor also considers himself to have a God Complex. Victor would be considered to have a

Similarities Between Tell Me A Riddle And The Rocking...
Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner are similar stories as they both focus primarily on the lives and hardships of the mothers and their
eldest children in the story. Tillie Olsen's story Tell Me A Riddle can be compared to DH Lawrence's The Rocking Horse Winner with similarities in
theme. Both Olsen and Lawrence focus on the theme of neglect and abandonment driven by the lack of attention the eldest children receive from their
mothers. However Olsen addresses this theme through symbolism whereas Lawrence uses personification. The new idea that is revealed about neglect
and abandonment through the analysis is that it can be both intentional and unintentional and can be interpreted differently by different characters.
In both Tell Me A Riddle and The Rocking Horse Winner Olsen and Lawrence use the theme of neglect and abandonment to describe the relationship
between the eldest children in the story and their mothers. For example in Tell Me A Riddle Emily feels abandoned by hermother after the birth of her
sister. This is because her mother could no longer care for Emily which led her to send Emily to the convasalent home. It states "I used to try to hold
and love her after she came back, but her body would stay stiff, and after a while she would push away"(Olsen,4). At this point Emily is separated
from her family for eight months, not being able to hold on to personal belongings that remind and connect her to them. Emily feelings of abandonment

Simplicity, especially in poetry, can be an often underrated and overlooked method of conveying a meaningful and extended message. Ted Kooser, an
American poet and writer, is well known for his 'simplistic' style of writing and has been described as using an "[H]onest, accessible verse..." (Ted

The second stanza of the poem introduces the women and her child that she and the man share. This stanza, like the first, is riddled with the use of
personification which can be evidenced in the first line "A woman lived with him, says the bedroom wall/papered with lilacs..." (Kooser). A lighter,
more positive tone underlies this stanza with the descriptions of the lilac wallpaper and a "...sandbox made from a tractor tire" (Kooser). The theme of
struggle is reiterated when the narrator states that "Money was scarce" and that "the winters [were] cold" (Kooser). And finally, the last line "It was
lonely here, says the narrow country road" presents the theme of isolation through the use of personification (Kooser). This isolation lends itself to the
more prevalent theme of struggle, suggesting that the family has no one else to rely on and is secluded from any possible relief or help. The third and
final stanza leaves the reader to come up with his or her own conclusion as to what has happened at the farmhouse. Nonetheless, the narrator does state
that "Something went wrong" thus reintroducing the ominous tone presented in the first stanza and informing the reader that something bad happened
(Kooser). The description of the house as 'empty' solidifies the theme of abandonment and presents the idea of isolation again.

The use of characterisation in a text can be used to represent complex ideas. Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel, The Road, follows the journey of a man
and son that face several events that challenge their humanity in order to survive the post–apocalyptic America. By studying the characterisation of the
father and son in The Road, it is revealed that complex ideas are represented. Readers may find that the existentialist ideas of death and violence being
unavoidable, love able to be shown through actions, every decision having both rewards and repercussions and when humans are put in extreme or
difficult situations, core values and beliefs may be abandoned, are promoted through the actions and thoughts of the characters. These ideas are
developed especially through the four main events in the novel through the use of dark imagery and descriptive language.
