Propaganda In World War 1
The Effect of U.S. Propaganda in World War One
World War One was a pivotal point in the evolution of how warfare was implemented to the battle
field. The beginning of war started with similar technology and tactics in the 19th century, but by the
end of the war technology along with tactics will change extensively. All sides of the war eventually
would use telephones, wireless communications, armored tanks, and even airplanes to their advantage
(Kaminski, 1989). Away from the battle field though a new device was constructed for the war effort,
a literary device; the use of propaganda. Although propaganda was never a tangible use in physical
battle it still had a great effect in the outcome of World War One, an effect tantamount to any utility ...

Propaganda gave way to Americans joining the Red Cross, buying liberty goods, or planting victory
gardens and other various positive activities in an effort to better the war effort, but in the midst of
these efforts also revealed negative efforts by US citizens. The recent German immigration in the
1870s and 1880s posed a problem in the social relations between non German Americans. Being Anti
German was often associated with patriotism; many citizens burned German books, and removed
German composers from symphony programs (Greve, 2014). Eventually things turned away from
more fickle matters considering German accustoms and turned towards darker matters. Those deemed
too German faced ridicule, threats, accusations of disloyalty or espionage and sometimes physical
harm (Greve, 2014). The social conditions for many German immigrants were vastly changed during
this period of anti German rhetoric. Many German immigrants felt the need to Americanize (Greve,
2014). German culture was hindered with many immigrants refusing to speak in their native tongue as
well as teaching German as a second language, America had truly fallen into a state of
Germanophobia (Greve, 2014).

Effects Of Communist Manifesto On Human Values
The Effects of Karl Marx s Communist Manifesto on Human Values
What was it like living in the times before the Communist Manifesto was introduced to society? What
kind of affect did this document have on the values of the average family? How did it influence the
values of the individual? Sometimes these values where affected in a way that does not come directly
from the release of the Manifesto but instead vicariously through other events brought on by the
document. Overall, an interesting topic to look at is what it meant to be human in the 1840 s. France is
representative of European nations at that time. Through France, the effects of the Communist
Manifesto on human values are evident.

Likewise, many of the old workers had been thrown out of employment, 3 and these numbers only
grew into the year of 1848. In a way Marx talks about this problem in the Communist Manifesto. In
this document, Marx introduced his idea to incorporate socialism into the government before
communism. This is mainly because socialism would prepare the way by nationalizing the means of
production and putting them under the control of those he viewed as the sole producers of wealth: the
workers. 4 This would take the control out of the hands of the wealthy and it would be given to those
people that had been the poorest in the previous years. His goal was to get the common people to have
a changed view of work once they started to be in charge of the producing of goods. This way, there
would be no rich and no poor, only economic equality would result.
Marx was intent on the subject of human change. Marx was often confronted with the charge that he
was trying to change human nature. However, his rebuttal was that human nature [had] changed many
times in the past, 5 and that it was possible to change it again. He acknowledged that it would have to
be a gradual change, but it was able to change. After all, we as humans are products of our
environment, particularly of the economic system in which we live. 6 The government and its actions

The Eugenics Movement Essay
In the 1920s, a company in New York started a movement known as The Eugenics Movement. The
idea of eugenics was eventually picked up by Germany, China, Peru, India and Bangladesh. The
movement is still in effect till this day; however, it is not as prevalent as it once was. The beginning of
the Eugenics Movement all started at Cold Spring Harbor, New York. The United States coined the
term Eugenics from Great Britain in the early 1900s. In the year 1910, a man by the name of Charles
B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Records Office (ERO). The funds for this building came from
Mrs. E.H. Harriman ( Eugenics: Did the Eugenics Movement Benefit the United States? ). The
movement was initially meant to purify the Gene Pool. One of the ways ... Show more content on

The Cold Spring Harbor is the birth place of the American Eugenics Movement. In 1898, the building
had just been founded with no knowledge by some. The building is also the origin for the Sterilization
national move for fitter families laws used against 60,000 Americans. These laws were the most
extreme, which faced more towards immigration, in the American History. Another home that Cold
Spring Harbor is, Davenport s Survival of the fittest scenarios towards animals and plants (originally),
eventually these scenarios were forced on humans ( Learning from History: Long Island s Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory, circa 1920. ). Sir Francis Galton, cousin of Charles Darwin, was a British
Eugenics professional. His ideology was that Eugenics should be used to keep the Survival of the
Fittest going. Defects are passed down through generation after generation by means of defective
genetics ( Forced Sterilization ). People believed plant and animal genes can be improved through
Natural Selection, they believe the same could be done with humans. The reproduction of the
considered unfit was too high compared to that of the fit reproduction. Contamination might be caused
by imbeciles in the human race. If not cut from reproduction they could lower the quality of the race.

The Media s Influence On Contemporary Society
Scholars have debated the media s increasing influence within contemporary society, and shaping of
identities. It has been suggested that the media provides us with limited notions and materials to brand
ourselves, which involve the notion behind being a man or woman and differentiate the means of bad
or good. There are various prominent mediums used by the media to convey or direct a message.
Images from media arbitrated precepts tend to become the conception of the individual s self. Vigorito
and Curry (1998, p. 136) indicate that pop culture is increasingly visual and images seen in the media
tend to convey the ideal cultural norms, values and gender relations. These images are not subtle, but
explicit notions of what is acceptable in society and how we as individuals should look and think in
the public eye. In the twenty first century, gender equality has been held in high regard both in the
macro and micro levels of social and professional contexts. Gender is defined by the features society
expects from a male or female depending on their biological sex. According to multiple scholars,
research on masculinity and male depiction has become a major focus due to gender becoming a
social construct subject to historical change. In the following study I wish to determine how the ideal
male and masculinity is understood and defined, how the male identity and masculinity is portrayed in
film, computer games and advertising, and how these representations have changed over time.

X Rays Vs. Fingerprint Analysis
Two scientific methods that could be used to identify me after I have been abducted and killed by a
terrorist group would be x rays and fingerprint comparisons. Since the death and discovery has only
been within the last 6 hours, the postmortem factors would not be a concern. Wild animals would not
necessarily have enough time to start eating important evidence such as fingers for the fingerprint
comparisons. The body would have started to set into rigor mortis but would not have decomped to
the point of not being able to identify. The x ray would show the plate and screws in the elbow that
would match medical records. If the body was not discovered until some time later, the plate and
screws would be visible at the scene from where the body had decomposed. Fingerprints would be
harder to get due to the state of the body. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The rose has not fully developed and is in between the budding stage and flower stage. The butterfly is

them. The last identifier would be the scar on the outside of my left elbow approximately 3 inches in

Attachment Theory And Children Of Divorce
Brittany Almony 05/10/2015 Social Psychology Attachment Theory and Children of Divorce
Attachment theory, or styles, is the way we describe relationships and bonds between people. In this
particular case it will be about the bond between two parents and the child as they struggle through the
troubles of divorce. In Dean McKay s article The Trauma of Divorce: Reducing the Impact of
Separation on Children we see that he identifies divorce for children as trauma, and that because of
trauma they become less secure in attachment. He begins to show the multiple ways that divorce can
cause an impact on children, if the child is going through an attachment stage. McKay also begins to
tell of how attachments can become weakened through divorce (McKay, 1997). His main area of
concern though is that if the attachment is weakened as a child how does it both them as an adult? In
the article McKay states, Divorce is a time of tremendous upheaval in families. Given the disruption,
should the divorce process occur at a point where the child s attachment style is not fully developed, it
stands to reason that the likelihood of secure attachment...is reduced. This shows that in order to
provide for the child they need to create a balance between them where the child can grow to have a
more stable environment, even if both parents aren t in the same living quarters. Then he begins to go
through the multiple stages of a child and their styles of attachment to their parents. According

Analysis Of Flesh And Blood So Cheap By Albert Marin
FLESH AND BLOOD SO CHEAP ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY Is your school or office prepared for
a fire if one ever did happen? Albert Marrin s text, Flesh and Blood so Cheap shows a factory that was
not prepared for the fire that was awaiting it. Marrin uses implicit and explicit evidence to hint
towards his overall theme that safety concerns should be a priority for business owners. The Triangle
Fire was a disaster, killing 146 people. There were ways in which it could ve been prevented but those
were overlooked. The fire couldn t ve been predicted, so safety was not a priority. Marrin uses explicit
and implicit evidence to develop his thesis along the way. The explicit evidence is the easy one to find
out of the two. Some of the explicit evidence Marrin uses are the facts that there were no lights in the
stairway and that the ninth floor exit was locked. Since there were no lights in the stairway, people
could ve tripped or fallen and then get run over by the crowd. Also, since the ninth door exit was
locked, people couldn t get out, leading to many deaths on that floor. Those two examples are some of

To find the implicit evidence, you really have to dig deep into the story. Some of the implicit evidence
that you can find in Marrin s text are right in front of your eyes such as in the title. The so cheap part
implies that the owners probably favored cost over safety. Additionally, there s a part later in the story
that explains how people couldn t open the doors because everyone was pushing against them. That
means that the doors opened inward and usually, for safety reasons, the doors should open outward so
that type of thing doesn t happen. That means that the owners didn t take into consideration the escape
route that their workers would use. Those details that I just gave are some examples of implicit
evidence that Marrin used in Flesh and Blood so

The budget is the basis for any form of financial stability, from household to business to country.
So what is a budget and how will it help?
It s not a magic fix to money problems, quite the reverse, it is a tool to help you see where the
problems are. If you re overspending then a budget will help you see where your problems are, but it
won t fix them. That ll be down to you to spend less. There s no other way to do it.
But it can make a big difference in telling you where your money is going. That £2 a day on a coffee,
£3 on a sandwich and £8 on a pack of cigarettes? That comes to £4745 per year. Surprised? That s
where the budget will help you.
How do you set up a budget?
There are two routes to go down, you can either build your own budget or use a template. I would
always recommend building your own budget, it s tailored to exactly what you want see and is as
simple as you make it. The problem with templates is that they can be incredibly hard to customise
and get the information that would be useful to you.
That being said, there are good

Duane Brown
Duane Anthony Brown was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 30, 1985. He attended Hermitage
High School in Richmond, where he competed in track, played football and basketball, and also
played saxophone in the high school s marching band. Although he was only 250 pounds coming out
of high school, Brown was rated by Rivals.com as a three start tight end prospect.
Brown opted to attend Virginia Tech and initially played as a tight end under Coach Frank Beamer
from 2004 to 2008. He redshirted his freshman year, but played all 13 games in 2004. During the 2004

Changes in Pension Accounting Over Time Have Improved...
Pensions are financial arrangements that allow individuals to receive an income stream during their
retirement years (Tatum, 2011). They are found in government institutions, private businesses,
professional groups and various other settings. Pensions funds can be found as a part of an institutions
or as an independent plan. Pension plans are a major participant in the capital markets. For example,
consider the fact that Ontario Teachers Pension Plan has a net asset value of $96.4 billion at the end of

persistent pressure to improve pension accounting. These changes have gained momentum with the

In the DC plan, the final benefits are unknown, but there are fixed contributions whereas in the DC
plan, because there is promise of a numerical benefit, the contributions vary as a result of time value
of money. This fundamentally means that the risk for the final benefit payout in the DB plan is borne
by the employer whereas in the DC plan, the pensioner bears this risk (Beechy Conrad, 2008).
Contributions to a pension fund are an expense for the employer, hence to describe in simple terms, on
a per pay basis, an employer will credit the pension fund with amount of pension funds the employee
is entitled to. This amount is the present value of the future payment stream payable to the employee
upon retirement (Beechy Conrad, 2008). The present value calculations of these obligations require
estimates of factors such as: investment earnings, future salary increases, employee turnover, mortality
rates, and life expectancy after retirement (Beechy Conrad, 2008). Actuarial models are used to
generate the probabilities used to calculate the pension obligation today, that will result in the
promised payout in the future. While companies do not have to worry about the funding status of DC
plans, those that offer the DB plan bear the perpetual burden of ensuring that the plans are funded.
There are three basic actuarial methods that can be used by an employer to fund the plan. The first
method is the accumulated benefit

Essay about Mark Twain
Mark Twain
Mark Twain is believed to be the father of all American literature. Twain was known for writing about
issues of his time such as slavery, due to his style of honesty and truth he was known as one of the
very first modernist writers. Mark Twain had many inspirations that motivated him to write his novels.
The inspirations varied from events that he witnessed and experienced, people he met in his lifetime,
other stories he read or heard about, and his environment. The writer known as, Mark Twain, was

employed by the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In the years that he was employed by the
Territorial Enterprise, Clemens developed his abilities as a reporter and humorist. In 1863, while still
employed by the Territorial Enterprise, Clemens adopted the pseudonym Mark Twain which is a
riverboat term meant two fathoms deep. Clemens made a gradual change to using Mark Twain as his
official pen name. The name Mark Twain gave Clemens the confidence and freedom to make his

reader of several British comedians and comedy history, mentioning how they all had different styles.
For example, one comedian would continuously make fun of himself, other would make fun of their

Symbolism In Go Tell It On The Mountain
In Go Tell It on the Mountain, James Baldwin works with themes of gender, violence, and change. He
does this through Florence, Gabriel, and the symbol of morning. The author is trying to say people s
decision can be determined by external factors. Florence is treated differently because she is girl.
Education is not offered to her, but to her brother who hates to learn. And he needed the education that
Florence desired far more than he, and that she might have got if he had not been born. She should
take all the responsibilities and do all the works at home as a woman. And she [mother] wanted
Florence, also, to be content helping with the washing, and fixing meals and keeping Gabriel quiet...

Women Of The American Civil War
In Mothers of Invention, Drew Gilpin Faust has written a wonderful history of the Women of the
Slaveholding South in the American Civil War . This informative study allows the reader to get a look
into the life of privileged white women of the south. Faust uses diaries, political documents,
newspapers and personal letters, to give the reader to experience things through the eyes and in the
words of the women themselves. Faust presents a number of southern women whose lives were
changed by the societal upheavals caused by the civil war. The book, proficiently explains how the
civil War influenced and changed the advantaged and cultured women of the slave holding south. It is
successful at examining how gender and race deteriorated and then altered from the beginning through
the end of the military operation. The introduction leading into chapter one depicts the platform for
which these women experienced before the war and leads the reader through the unavoidable changes
that occurred out of necessity. Foust frameworks their relationships in society before the firing at Fort
Sumter and rationalizes that from the very beginning, many women realize that their lives would be
forever transformed. A major theme initiated in chapter one and successively intertwined throughout
the book, is that of social differences between the women of the north from that of the south and how
it correlated to their responses to the war. Most Affluent women of the south defined themselves in

Television Shows Like CSI
I was already aware that television shows like CSI are not accurate when explaining crime scene
investigator s job. Television shows, movies, books, etc constantly overly emphasize specific
situations in order for the people to be entertained. If entertainment went the way it is was in real life,
than we d all be bored out of our minds. For instance, criminal investigators spend a lot of time on
paper work. I doubt we would want to watch that on television. I don t want you to think that I believe
a criminal investigators job is boring because it s not all the time and investigators will have plenty of
stories to share throughout their career. I don t watch the show CSI that frequently, but it may display
some accuracy from time to time, but I would not take it seriously.
The common mistakes made are simple acts that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the television show may go out their way to test the DNA evidence along with the
defendant s confession, but the DNA evidence would be costly. In that case, the DNA evidence
wouldn t normally be needed if the suspect admits to the crime. More importantly, television shows
like CSI mostly uses science as a definite conclusion mainly involving DNA evidence, but it is not
always effective. Forensic scientist s focus on probability calculations and the results are not instant.
DNA always is not always guaranteed to have results. To elaborate, specific factors can damage DNA
such as age, humidity, heat and sunlight. In addition, television shows occasionally display ultra violet

International News Coverage On Indian English Print Media...
International News Coverage in Indian English Print Media Dailies A Qualitative Content Analysis of
The Times of India, The Hindu and The Indian Express Introduction India is home to one of the
largest, most diverse print media sectors in the world. With a whopping 82237 newspapers registered
as of 2012, out of which a staggering 11,478 are in English, the Indian media seems to be thriving and
feeding an incredible number of people information every single day. Despite these overwhelmingly
positive numbers, a lot of concerns have risen regarding the actual content of newspapers. Arguments
of commercialization and paid journalism (which are rampant) aside, there has been some discontent
regarding the lack of coverage of International Issues in the Indian Media, particularly Indian
Newspapers. To put things into perspective, one can look no further than the Syrian Crisis that is still
raging just yonder and look first at the general ignorance of the average Indian how many are actually
aware of one of the greatest crimes against humanity that is currently underway? With over 170,000
civilians recorded dead, as per the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, one would expect
significant concern fuelled by the media providing significant coverage of gruelling events. However,
as illustrated in an article on News Analysis website News Laundry, that is not the case. ...What
happens in Syria concerns us directly. If your only source of news was the coverage in the

Igor Stravinsky Rite Of Spring Essay
Igor Stravinsky s piece the Rite of Spring is probably one of the well known pieces during the 20th
century. Igor Stravinsky really changed the way music was during the 20th century with his very
popular piece the Rite of Spring. In the beginning of Stravinsky s piece the Rite of Spring the rhythm
is somewhat fast. The tempo of the piece changes throughout the piece. At times the piece can have an
average pace and then pick up to a fast tempo again. There is no clear solid rhythm to the piece
because the tempo changes throughout the entire piece. The melody of this piece for the most part is
very disjointed and jumpy. Throughout the entirety of the piece it is harsh sounding, but there are
moments in the piece where it is smooth sounding. So the melody is ... Show more content on

The chords being played are very unique. This piece can be considered polyphonic because of the
multiple melodies being played at the same time. In some aspects of the piece it can be considered
homophonic, but the piece is mostly polyphonic. The piece has very high complexity in terms of
texture and structure. For the duration of this piece a large amount of instruments were used. Some of
these instruments include bassoon flutes, flutes, horns, trumpets, trombones, tubs, strings, drums, and
even a triangle. So the amount of instruments used in this piece is very abundant, which would entail
an orchestra. A lot of the meter ranges in this piece can be very different. But a lot of what you can
hear is a 4/4 meter and either a 2/4 meter. Throughout this piece it is hard to determine the piece s
main meter because it is constantly changing. The form of this piece is sort of the same way. It is hard
to determine the form of this piece, but it can be considered binary form. It is binary because of the
contrast within the piece. The genre of this piece is that of a ballet. This piece also is considered a

Life in Las Vegas Essay
Life in Las Vegas
Hell is expensive. This is my first thought as my plane lands in Las Vegas. The
Luxor hotel s glass pyramid seems dangerously close to the runway s edge, as do its chocolate and
gold sphinx and rows of shaved palms. I wonder if these rooms tremble when jets land. Behind the
Luxor are mountains kissed by dust the hue of bone; to its left lies the Strip, where color is so bright it
looks like it has died, rotted, and come back as a poisonous flower.
I have been forewarned. First, I am told flying in at noon is not the way to enter Vegas. Correct entry
is at night. This way I would have the full treatment of neon and glowing sky. As a child, I was taught
not to buy into anything at night. The spoiled, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There s a small but steady amount of suicides we call jumpers, states Sgt.
Bill Keeton of Metro Police. They re generally tourists. Some jump off an overpass, even Hoover

Las Vegas has other names for its fatalities. Snowbirds are retirees from the
Northwest who settle here or come to gamble their pension funds. Downwinders are former Utah
residents fighting cancer who lived downwind of radioactive breezes in the fifties and sixties. Nuclear
testing was only one desert valley away; like the airport now, it was so close hotel rooms shook.
It s not necessarily gamblers, Keeton goes on. Just people who ve planned one last fling. We used to

Ireland. On his immigration card, it said he seemed either on drugs or depressed. He came here and
went to a pistol range, shot targets for a while, then took his gun into a bathroom and killed himself.
His family in Ireland kept asking, why Las Vegas? At that same pistol range, a man from Japan shot
himself in his shooting stall. It s strange.

with sleeping pills and a plastic bag, in a luxury suite at the Mirage. His body was found next to the

Analysis Of Innovative Hr Strategy For Developing Healthy...
Part A Human Resources approach performs an extremely essential function in creating and
maintaining competitive advantage; many organizations disregard the importance of HR in creating
competitive advantage. The three priorities will require major transformation in the organization. HR
strategy should support the conversion, and help the workforces to acclimatize in different
environment. One major objective of the innovative HR strategy will be to create a healthy
organizational culture that supports innovation, collaboration, and intercontinental operation.
Leadership plays enormously important role in developing healthy organizational culture. (Dessler,
2013) Furthermore, the innovative HR strategy will provide the workforces a platform where they can
express their opinion, thoughts, recommendations, and perspectives for the conception of a more
productive workplace. The workforces can also share their views on how to create a supportive
organizational culture. The personnel will likewise share their ideas and recommendations on
improving processes, cutting expenditure, reducing waste etc. Availability of such platform will
improve employee satisfaction, create a sense of ownership, involve employees in decision making,
and motivate employees to achieve their individual as well as organizational goals. (Dessler, 2013)
Additionally, the modernistic HR strategy will develop a workforce planning procedure that can

Similarities Between Funeral And Pericles Funeral
We often like to think that over the course of two millennia we change a lot. In many ways we do, our
technology advances, we become more knowledgeable, and we as people evolve. However, we do not
evolve in every way that we perhaps should. An example we can look at to see the ways some things
have not changed much through examining two similar documents. Written in drastically different
time periods, you would not think Lincoln s Gettysburg Address and Pericles s Epitaph would really
have much in common. The two funeral orations do share their fair share of similarities in addition to
their differences, though. To understand how the two documents compare we must first look at the
context of both the Epitaph and the Gettysburg Address. Pericles s Epitaph was written roughly 2,000
years ago during the beginning of the Peloponnesian Wars. It comes to us through Thucydides in his
history The Peloponnesian War. Pericles spoke after the first year of battle in the winter, and his
speech was delivered at a public funeral for all those that were slain during the war. This is why his
speech is often called the Funeral Oration of Pericles. He had been a general at the time and a natural
choice to deliver a speech on those who died in battle. In addition to his status though, Pericles had a
reputation for speaking only when it was truly important. Thus, the people would know how important
this speech was and more importantly they would get the message Pericles was trying to get

Steroids Be Banned
Performing and playing at the highest level is crucial to athletes, multiple sports involve the use of
different physical abilities that require athletes to be well trained to succeed during competition. High
School athletes are often overstretched by coaches, family, and peers to always win, as a result many
teen athletes turn to steroids to raise themselves faster. Steroids influence body metabolism, the
process in which the body changes food into energy to provide the body with the strength needed to
grow and function. The use of steroids to alter bodily functions is considered unethical and therefore
regulated in multiple professional and amateur leagues around the world. Steroids should be banned
from sports.

testosterone is distributed throughout the entire body causing the development of male characteristics.
Performance enhancing drugs lead to deepening of the voice, increased body hair loss of scalp hair,
liver or kidney damage, oily skin, acne, facial pore enlargement, clitoral enlargement, and decreased
breast size. Regardless of gender and sport, any kind of steroid is extremely harmful to the body and
mind of an athlete and the negative effects of the drug far outweigh any short term advantages. On the
other hand, some say that steroids have positive effects and should not be banned from sports.
Objectors argue that performance enhancing drugs make athletes stronger and provide better

In Icarus by Edward Field, the narrator, through a tough turn of events has come to the conclusion that
he is not all he thinks he is. In the poem, Field makes an allusion to Greek mythology of the story of
Icarus and Daedalus, attempting to fly. Icarus, through his failures, sees that he is just as ordinary as

As an analysis of the poem itself, Daedalus and Icarus build wings for Icarus to fly in an attempt to
escape from prison and ,Daedalus reminds Icarus before his flight not to fly too close to the sun.
However, anxious to begin his adventure, Icarus dismisses the warning and soared near to the sun,,
resulting with his wings falling off and him falling to his death in the sea. He is thought to be dead, but
feathers near the sea prove otherwise. Icarus thinks of himself so highly, amazing almost before ...

Imagery In The Man I Killed And Ambush
In the short stories The Man I Killed and Ambush, one of Tim O Brien s purposes is to describe how
society wrongfully portrays soldiers gain a sense of pride and victory when they take lives of other
human beings instead of the guilt driven battle they have to deal with for the rest of their lives. O
Brien tries to disprove this theory and instead show they are actually stuck with this tragedy for the
rest of their lives as they lose their innocence and sense of humanity. O Brien shows this through the
use of imagery to portray and help develop this concept/theme. O Brien describes through vivid
imagery and details in, The Man I Killed, the dead man s eye, His one eye shut, his other eye was a
star shaped hole (118). Here O Brien uses this imagery to symbolize the star shape of the dead man s
eye as a sign of hope as a shooting star, yet, he ties this beautiful image with death, to show that his
hope/future has betrayed him. O Brien purposefully places this star shaped wound on the soldier s eye,
for it is with the eyes that both the dead man and O Brien gaze upon the stars in the sky. As if he was
gazing more upon the stars, upon his future, which in this case his future comes to an end with O
Brien s fatal doing. O Brien s innocence has left him as he has become in a sense dirty after taking this
man s life. So, in this case, O Brien has not taken this killing with pride and victory, but with sadness
and guilt. This goes back to his purpose to show that soldiers

The Lost Boys Of Sudan Film Analysis
The second Sudanese Civil War in Sudan forced millions of innocent people to flee their homes and
families in search for safety. Doing so, many got displaced or killed because of starvation, genocidal
murder and bomb raids. Those who survived were sent to a refugee camp in Kenya and some the lost
boys a name given by aid workers at the camp, had the fortune to be sent by the United States to
America to start a new life. Among these were Panther Bior, John Bul Dau, and Daniel Abol Pach,
whose life was documented in God Grew Tired of Us. Furthermore, the documentary explores the
lives of the Lost Boys of Sudan and their journey as they learn to adapt to the American Life, a life
much better and advanced than the oppressed life they lived. The directors, Christopher Dillon Quinn
and Tommy Walker, aim to show how the boys cope with learning new customs, rules, trying to keep a
job, amongst other things, all while doing the best they can to stay rooted in their culture and help
those they left behind in the refugee camp. With actual footage and relatable characters, the film sets a
tone that evokes sympathy to viewers, thus relaying a need of action and validating his message of
Americans forgetfulness and ignorance to their blessings.
The beginning of the film showing real footage from the Civil War in Sudan, the starvation and the
condition the young men were in, serves as a way to build the setting, characters and context. Along
with those archives, the directors back up

Analysis Of Malala And The Sealand Lady s Speech
Persuasive Appeals Assignment The first appeal that will be analyzed is logos, the appeal to logic. In
Malala s speech, the constant use of many statistics and facts made the speech much more reasonable
and sensible. For example: And that is why they killed 14 innocent medical students in the recent
attack in Quetta . Also, Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been
injured. These quotes establish logic in the sense that if one uses statistics or facts, it shows that they
ve done their research and they are aware of the issues happening globally. In the Sealand Lady s
speech, the use of reasoning and common sense is evidently shown through quotes like It is not
pleasant to kill any creature, she agreed, but to pretend that one can live without doing so is self
deception and The essential quality of life is living; the essential quality of living is change; change is
evolution: and we are a part of it. These quotes show that death is inevitable for life to form and
although it s not pleasant, it still has to happen. In addition, whoever is an enemy of change is
essentially an enemy of life because the two fit hand in hand. To conclude, the use of logos in Malala s
speech and the Sealand lady s speech was effective. The second appeal is pathos, the appeal to
emotions. In Malala s speech, her personal experiences were effective in making the readers or
listeners feel sympathetic. For example, she greets everyone

Male Utopian And Dystopias
As Bammer explains, while male utopian writers are mainly interested in broadening their influence
and power and exploring other worlds, women s utopias aim to change their current situation by
reconstructing the power relations that affect their lives. She states that these fantasies are much more
achievable in theory and much more urgent than men s. However, women had no reason to turn to
such a male dominated genre while they had genres more suitable for delving into the private sphere
and its more realistic utopian possibilities (Bammer, 2004).
Bammer points out that although men s utopian fantasies take different approaches compared to
women s, women are far from absent in men s utopia. In fact, women seem to have a central role in

Dystopian fiction is engaged with the argument between the desire of the individual and the societal
demand, emphasizing the sexuality and relations among the genders as parts of this conflict (Brooker
1994, 337). Brooker states that the governments of dystopian societies in books such as We, Brave
New World or Nineteen Eighty Four all use sexuality as the primary tool to control society. Brooker
also points out that despite this consistent focus on sexuality in dystopian fiction, the major works of
the genre have done relatively little to challenge conventional notions of gender roles . Although there
is considerable emphasis on sexuality in dystopian fiction, Brooker argues that conventional notions
of gender roles remain unchallenged in major works of the genre. He observes that even though these
literary dystopias and utopias stress the importance of gender equality, they remain places where men
are men and women are women, and in relatively conventional ways . Brooker brings up More s
Utopia as an example of this trend. In Utopia, women and men are proclaimed completely equal, even
though it is a patriarchal society where men are still the head of the household and women belong to
their fathers or husbands. However, according to Brooker, More consciously tried to provide women

Descartes Philosophy
Descartes Philosophy Rene Descartes is a philosopher that lived during the Enlightenment period and
is famous for his philosophy of methodological doubt. His method of doubt was psychological in
character, involved a kind of rational insight, and implied a justified belief analysis of knowledge,
with justification construed in terms of being unshakable. (Newman) An important function of his
method was to enable people to redirect their attention from the senses to clear and distinct ideas
through intellect, reason, and doubt. Descartes understood knowledge as advancing truth. The
Enlightenment was an intellectual period that brought about ideas of God, reason, nature, and man. It
was a period of political and social upheaval that brought about revolutions and a period of learning to
think for oneself, employing and relying on the individual s capabilities to determine how to think and
act. (Bristow) Philosophy of that period caused tension with established religions. By using the
intellect to think and act, it required opposing the role of established religion by redirecting thoughts
and actions. It brought people to a higher human existence that was more fulfilled. Men became more
rational and developed goals of obtaining more knowledge, freedom, and happiness. With turmoil in
the empire, people became concerned for personal salvation, which also opposed the role of religion.
Established religion of those days taught that people should follow along without

Ideals Of Womanhood In Jane Eyre
Fred Astaire is considered one of the greatest American dancers of all time, for his amazing
choreography and flawless performances. However, a newspaper quipped that he could only be
considered second best: his partner, Ginger Rogers, was better since she had to do everything he
could, but backwards and in heels. Women being ignored or the assumption that women are lesser
than men has been a constant social struggle. A century before Astaire and Rogers, British author
Charlotte Brontë fought against Victorian sexism. Through her novel Jane Eyre, Brontë attempts to
subvert the Victorian ideals for women. Professor Kathryn Hughes in the article Gender Roles in the
19th Century and Lynn Abrams, author of Ideals of Womanhood in Victorian Britain both explain that
the expectation was for women and men to occupy separate spheres, with women occupying the
domestic sphere meaning that they educated, seeking marriage. Brontë succeeds in challenging these
Victorian standards for women, through the characterization and actions of Jane Eyre, and Rochester
and others.
The Victorian ideal elevates women in the moral sphere. Hughes explains that it was the job of women
to counterbalance the moral taint of the public sphere [while] also preparing the next generation to
carry on this way of life (Hughes 1). Women were expected both a better sense of morality and a
strong educational background, exemplified by Jane s job as a governoress. Brontë manages to subvert

Earth is a life giving planet. It is also true that it s never at rest. It is in a daily course of revolution and
rotation, making us experience not only night and day, but also seasons. This planet goes through
many changes that brings wonders, but also catastrophes. These forces of nature leave damages and
deaths all over the world. One of these cataclysm is earthquakes. What exactly is an earthquake? An
earthquake is the ground shaking caused by the sudden movement of one block or rock slipping past

To begin with, what exactly caused both of these quakes? Well, a cycle is happening above as well as
beneath the surface. This cycle involves the movement of tectonic plates. Both of these earthquakes
were caused by the movement of two very different plates. The Chilean earthquake was caused by the
Nazca Plate sub ducting under the South American plate. This means these two plates collided along
the plate boundaries, which made one slip underneath the other. The bottom plate slowly pushed the
top plate, and was then released causing the earthquake. The magnitude for the quake was of 9.5,
being the largest earthquake ever recorded. The Haiti quake was caused by a lateral strike slip motion.
There was a separation in the boundary region of the Caribbean Plate and North American Plate. As
the plates glided past one another, strain and compression was building along the fault. There was a
release of energy that resulted in ground shaking. The Haiti earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0. The
number of deaths and damages is the biggest difference between the two. You would think that the
largest earthquake ever recorded would also have tragic numbers, but it didn t. The Chile earthquake
reached an approximate number of about 2,000 deaths and. While the Haiti earthquake had an
estimate of 316,000 killed or missing. How is this possible? Well, this is because Chile has strict

when faced with the choice, most humans, including Prospero, would choose vengeance. Shakespeare
presents vengeance as a stronger influence than virtue in his play. The Tempest. In Shakespeare s The
Tempest, the main character, Prospero is a very vengeful man, but he does not start out that way. His
brother, Antonio, forced him out of his homeland without any resources, leaving him stranded with his
three year old daughter. An event that traumatic can corrupt even the kindest human being. Prospero s
need for justice compels him to wreck his brother s ship and strand him on the island. He tortures the
ship members with the thought of never returning home and the idea that some of their friends and
family are dead. What his brother did to him turned Prospero into a plotting and an evil man, not the
man who spent all of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prospero was not fueled by virtue to attack his brother s ship; he was fueled by vengeance. Prospero
did not convince Alonso that his son had died because Prospero wanted to forgive him. He did this
because he wanted Alonso to feel the pain that he had felt when he was left stranded with his three
year old daughter. Prospero wanted to be justified, and he wanted the men who had hurt him to feel
sorry for their actions. Virtue and vengeance are two of the strongest influences on human actions, but
it is clear to see, through Shakespeare s work, that vengeance is the strongest. Without the desire for
revenge, The Tempest would never have begun. Humans cannot resist the urge to avenge

Computer Science And Information Technology
The last few years have been known by the emergence of many new fields in addition to the quick
development and advancement of different existing ones. In fact, within the science fields,
biotechnology has had advances in its methodologies and techniques in a way that s been converging
with the improvement in computer science. In an arena when we could talk about the success of the
Human Gene Project, the enormous amount of complete sequences for different organisms and the
research findings that are being published every day, the growth of biological data has been
characterized with a very high pace. This huge quantity of information that is being produced
definitely raises the need of organizing, storing and analyzing it, not only in spread sheets controlled
by humans, by relying more on the computational powers of the field of informatics. Aligning the
growth of computer science with the increasing need of managing biological data has given rise to the
field of bioinformatics, which is generally defined as the intersection of biology, computer science and
information technology (1).
Looking back at the origin and history of bioinformatics, the concept of keeping and storing biological
data has started as early as the emergence of the famous Mendelian experiements. After he cross
fertilized flowers with different colors but from similar species, he started keeping record of his
genetic observations. In 1973, DNA cloning was invented by Herbert Boyer and Stanely Cohen in

Citizen Kane Accomplishments
Orson Welles is commonly praised for his popular movie, Citizen Kane, but that wasn t the only
movie he has directed and acted in. In his career, Welles acted in several plays, used his voice on radio
shows, created ten complete films, and acted in a number of movies himself. Even though, Citizen
Kane was a major influence in the filmmaking world, it wasn t all Orson should be remembered for.
Welles was a dedicated director, producer, writer, and actor who always found a way to use his
creativity and passion to create films. Welles got lucky and started peeking into the acting world at a
young age. Before he even considered movies he traveled and took on a few roles in the theatre world.

Analysis Of A Simple Heart By Flaubert
In Gustave Flaubert s short story A Simple Heart Flaubert tells of the life of Felicite, a poor woman
who does not seem to have any luck at all. Felicite is the kind of character that makes the reader pity
her while at the same time finding her to be incredibly strange. Flaubert uses human emotions in a
story that is incredibly simple in both word and tale to tell the reader of a woman who does not live a
particularly exciting or happy life. Through this short story, Flaubert has given the reader a character
that is simple but loving, strange yet human, and easily attached to things. Through his use of realism
and a firm grasp on human emotions Flaubert has crafted a tale that is unlike any other. Felicite is a
simple character. She does not have an education for one and for another she agrees to marry the man
who tries to rape her. Flaubert writes At the edge of a field of oats, he pushed her roughly to the
ground (785). One would think that Felicite would be done with a man that tried to do something like
that to her, but instead, she forgives him almost immediately and agrees to marry him. This forgiving
and forgetting part of Felicite s character is precisely why she is so simple yet loving. In her mind, she
does not seem to see anything wrong with marrying the man who tried to force himself on her. In fact,
it seems as if she is looking for any excuse in the world to find someone to love and to be able to love
them in return. Felicite is also a seemingly very

Myiasis from Larvae and Pubic Lice
Myiasis (from the Greek myi , fly) is defined as the invasion of living tissue by dipterous larvae.
Several fly species such as Oestrus ovis have been reported to cause myiasis, affecting humans either
directly, when the female fly deposits the larvae on the conjunctiva or eyelids of a human host rather
than a sheep or a goat, or indirectly, through dirty hands. Ocular myiasis presentations include external
ophthalmomyiasis, when the larvae is found in the external ocular tissues, leading to ocular surface
disorders (conjunctivitis, punctuate keratitis) or pseudoorbital cellulitis, and internal
ophthalmomyiasis, a rare condition with a clinical course ranging from asymptomatic to severe
uveitis, retinal detachment and optic atrophy. Several methods of treatment have been reported
depending on the location of the larva. Management of external myiasis includes the mechanical
removal of the larvae in association with topical administration of steroids to reduce conjunctival
inflammation.(1) This may be a challenging maneuver, as the larva tends to firmly attach to the ocular
surface. Some authors recommend the use of topical anesthetic to loosen the larval attachment.(2)
Double eversion of the eyelids is mandatory to ensure that larvae have been completely removed.
Early removal decreases the potential of vision loss and larvae dissemination. For subretinal larvae,
argon laser photocoagulation has been used with successful results. Vitrectomy and retinotomy is
recommended if

Analysis Of The Movie Trudy Chacon
TRUDY CHACON
Trudy Chacon, portray by Michelle Rodrigues, was a confident SecOps pilot for the RDA. Her
primary task was to pilot a Samson that was used for transportation and for battle. She lived in
Pandora when she first appeared in the movie and had already been serving for the RDA two years
when she met Jake Sulley. Shortly after she met Jake she was thrust into leadership role in the take
down of the RDA. Trudy also flew the trio to a temporary science station in the Hallelujah Mountains,
known as Site 26, when Dr. Augustine wanted to continue her research away from Hell s Gate and
military personnel (wikia.com).
Trudy met Jake Sully soon after he arrived at Hell s Gate in 2154. One day the two along with Norm
Spellman and Dr. Grace Augustine went on an expedition deep into a Pandoran forest. Trudy stayed
behind with Lyle Wainfleet to guard the Samson. During the expedition Jake went missing and she
helped search for him. As it became night Colonel Quaritch saw that it was too dangerous for Jake s
avatar and called off the search She joined Jake Sulley, Na ve and the Omaticaya clan.
When the RDA attacked the Hometree, Trudy refused to join in the assault and broke out of combat
formation to return to base just after the first salvo. Disillusioned, after refusing to fire on Hometree
her statement was, I didn t sign up for this shit. She then effectively switched allegiance in the midst
of conflict. Another example of her being a leader was when she was able to

Essay about Teen Magazines Negative Influence on the...
I open up the hottest teen magazines on the market; Allure, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and Teen Vogue
are a few at the top. As I flip through the magazine this holiday season I see pages of clothes that only
the rich can afford, pictures of half naked people draped over each other, articles about horoscopes and
editorials talking about which teen star is the sexiest. Fashion, makeup, men, sex, celebrities, and
exercising are the most popular topics I see as I peruse these magazines. These popular magazines
take no time to tell me how beautiful I am, but only tell me the hundreds of things I need to do to
improve. They tell me that I need more new, expensive makeup to look like a movie star. These
magazines teach me how to seduce a man, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Magazines no longer give girls advice on how to grow up to be a respected person or a loving friend;
instead they give advice on how to hook up quick or make his dreams come true. Where has all the
wholesome advice gone? Women have let the idea of looking beautiful take over their self confidence
and life. Healthy Place, an online magazine teaching women about living a healthy life, says that,
today s fashion models weigh twenty three percent less than the average female, and a young woman
between the ages of 18 34 has a seven percent chance of being as slim as a catwalk model and a one
percent chance of being as thin as a supermodel. So why do women push themselves to be excessively
thin when these models are anomalies? They do it because the media tells them that this look is the
only look that can attract men. Even if a woman is beautiful according to the media s standards, she
will always find something about her body that she hates, whether it is her hair or her belly button, no
women is completely satisfied. Our society is very accepting of different religions and lifestyles, so
why can we not accept different types of beauty as well? As a teenager, I know the pressure put on
females to look a certain way. I attended a public high school in a rather wealthy area. So, while other
girls could afford the in clothes, I spent my shopping days at the sales rack. My Christmas lists were
full of basic jeans and shoes, because it was the

  • 2. Propaganda In World War 1 The Effect of U.S. Propaganda in World War One World War One was a pivotal point in the evolution of how warfare was implemented to the battle field. The beginning of war started with similar technology and tactics in the 19th century, but by the end of the war technology along with tactics will change extensively. All sides of the war eventually would use telephones, wireless communications, armored tanks, and even airplanes to their advantage (Kaminski, 1989). Away from the battle field though a new device was constructed for the war effort, a literary device; the use of propaganda. Although propaganda was never a tangible use in physical battle it still had a great effect in the outcome of World War One, an effect tantamount to any utility ... Propaganda gave way to Americans joining the Red Cross, buying liberty goods, or planting victory gardens and other various positive activities in an effort to better the war effort, but in the midst of these efforts also revealed negative efforts by US citizens. The recent German immigration in the 1870s and 1880s posed a problem in the social relations between non German Americans. Being Anti German was often associated with patriotism; many citizens burned German books, and removed German composers from symphony programs (Greve, 2014). Eventually things turned away from more fickle matters considering German accustoms and turned towards darker matters. Those deemed too German faced ridicule, threats, accusations of disloyalty or espionage and sometimes physical harm (Greve, 2014). The social conditions for many German immigrants were vastly changed during this period of anti German rhetoric. Many German immigrants felt the need to Americanize (Greve, 2014). German culture was hindered with many immigrants refusing to speak in their native tongue as well as teaching German as a second language, America had truly fallen into a state of Germanophobia (Greve, 2014). ... • 3. Effects Of Communist Manifesto On Human Values The Effects of Karl Marx s Communist Manifesto on Human Values What was it like living in the times before the Communist Manifesto was introduced to society? What kind of affect did this document have on the values of the average family? How did it influence the values of the individual? Sometimes these values where affected in a way that does not come directly from the release of the Manifesto but instead vicariously through other events brought on by the document. Overall, an interesting topic to look at is what it meant to be human in the 1840 s. France is representative of European nations at that time. Through France, the effects of the Communist Manifesto on human values are evident. In order to understand how people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Likewise, many of the old workers had been thrown out of employment, 3 and these numbers only grew into the year of 1848. In a way Marx talks about this problem in the Communist Manifesto. In this document, Marx introduced his idea to incorporate socialism into the government before communism. This is mainly because socialism would prepare the way by nationalizing the means of production and putting them under the control of those he viewed as the sole producers of wealth: the workers. 4 This would take the control out of the hands of the wealthy and it would be given to those people that had been the poorest in the previous years. His goal was to get the common people to have a changed view of work once they started to be in charge of the producing of goods. This way, there would be no rich and no poor, only economic equality would result. Marx was intent on the subject of human change. Marx was often confronted with the charge that he was trying to change human nature. However, his rebuttal was that human nature [had] changed many times in the past, 5 and that it was possible to change it again. He acknowledged that it would have to be a gradual change, but it was able to change. After all, we as humans are products of our environment, particularly of the economic system in which we live. 6 The government and its actions do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Eugenics Movement Essay In the 1920s, a company in New York started a movement known as The Eugenics Movement. The idea of eugenics was eventually picked up by Germany, China, Peru, India and Bangladesh. The movement is still in effect till this day; however, it is not as prevalent as it once was. The beginning of the Eugenics Movement all started at Cold Spring Harbor, New York. The United States coined the term Eugenics from Great Britain in the early 1900s. In the year 1910, a man by the name of Charles B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Records Office (ERO). The funds for this building came from Mrs. E.H. Harriman ( Eugenics: Did the Eugenics Movement Benefit the United States? ). The movement was initially meant to purify the Gene Pool. One of the ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Cold Spring Harbor is the birth place of the American Eugenics Movement. In 1898, the building had just been founded with no knowledge by some. These laws were the most extreme, which faced more towards immigration, in the American History. Another home that Cold Spring Harbor is, Davenport s Survival of the fittest scenarios towards animals and plants (originally), eventually these scenarios were forced on humans ( Learning from History: Long Island s Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, circa 1920. ). Sir Francis Galton, cousin of Charles Darwin, was a British Eugenics professional. His ideology was that Eugenics should be used to keep the Survival of the Fittest going. Defects are passed down through generation after generation by means of defective genetics ( Forced Sterilization ). People believed plant and animal genes can be improved through Natural Selection, they believe the same could be done with humans. The reproduction of the considered unfit was too high compared to that of the fit reproduction. Contamination might be caused by imbeciles in the human race. If not cut from reproduction they could lower the quality of the race. Western and North ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Media s Influence On Contemporary Society Scholars have debated the media s increasing influence within contemporary society, and shaping of identities. It has been suggested that the media provides us with limited notions and materials to brand ourselves, which involve the notion behind being a man or woman and differentiate the means of bad or good. There are various prominent mediums used by the media to convey or direct a message. Images from media arbitrated precepts tend to become the conception of the individual s self. Vigorito and Curry (1998, p. 136) indicate that pop culture is increasingly visual and images seen in the media tend to convey the ideal cultural norms, values and gender relations. These images are not subtle, but explicit notions of what is acceptable in society and how we as individuals should look and think in the public eye. In the twenty first century, gender equality has been held in high regard both in the macro and micro levels of social and professional contexts. Gender is defined by the features society expects from a male or female depending on their biological sex. According to multiple scholars, research on masculinity and male depiction has become a major focus due to gender becoming a social construct subject to historical change. In the following study I wish to determine how the ideal male and masculinity is understood and defined, how the male identity and masculinity is portrayed in film, computer games and advertising, and how these representations have changed over time. ... Since the death and discovery has only been within the last 6 hours, the postmortem factors would not be a concern. Wild animals would not necessarily have enough time to start eating important evidence such as fingers for the fingerprint comparisons. The body would have started to set into rigor mortis but would not have decomped to the point of not being able to identify. The x ray would show the plate and screws in the elbow that would match medical records. • 8. Attachment Theory And Children Of Divorce Brittany Almony 05/10/2015 Social Psychology Attachment Theory and Children of Divorce Attachment theory, or styles, is the way we describe relationships and bonds between people. In this particular case it will be about the bond between two parents and the child as they struggle through the troubles of divorce. In Dean McKay s article The Trauma of Divorce: Reducing the Impact of Separation on Children we see that he identifies divorce for children as trauma, and that because of trauma they become less secure in attachment. He begins to show the multiple ways that divorce can cause an impact on children, if the child is going through an attachment stage. McKay also begins to tell of how attachments can become weakened through divorce (McKay, 1997). His main area of concern though is that if the attachment is weakened as a child how does it both them as an adult? In the article McKay states, Divorce is a time of tremendous upheaval in families. Given the disruption, should the divorce process occur at a point where the child s attachment style is not fully developed, it stands to reason that the likelihood of secure attachment...is reduced. This shows that in order to provide for the child they need to create a balance between them where the child can grow to have a more stable environment, even if both parents aren t in the same living quarters. Then he begins to go through the multiple stages of a child and their styles of attachment to their parents. According ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Albert Marrin s text, Flesh and Blood so Cheap shows a factory that was not prepared for the fire that was awaiting it. Marrin uses implicit and explicit evidence to hint towards his overall theme that safety concerns should be a priority for business owners. The Triangle Fire was a disaster, killing 146 people. There were ways in which it could ve been prevented but those were overlooked. The fire couldn t ve been predicted, so safety was not a priority. Marrin uses explicit and implicit evidence to develop his thesis along the way. The explicit evidence is the easy one to find out of the two. Some of the explicit evidence Marrin uses are the facts that there were no lights in the stairway and that the ninth floor exit was locked. Since there were no lights in the stairway, people could ve tripped or fallen and then get run over by the crowd. Also, since the ninth door exit was locked, people couldn t get out, leading to many deaths on that floor. Those two examples are some of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That means that the doors opened inward and usually, for safety reasons, the doors should open outward so that type of thing doesn t happen. That means that the owners didn t take into consideration the escape route that their workers would use. In the DC plan, the final benefits are unknown, but there are fixed contributions whereas in the DC plan, because there is promise of a numerical benefit, the contributions vary as a result of time value of money. This fundamentally means that the risk for the final benefit payout in the DB plan is borne by the employer whereas in the DC plan, the pensioner bears this risk (Beechy Conrad, 2008). Contributions to a pension fund are an expense for the employer, hence to describe in simple terms, on a per pay basis, an employer will credit the pension fund with amount of pension funds the employee is entitled to. This amount is the present value of the future payment stream payable to the employee upon retirement (Beechy Conrad, 2008). The present value calculations of these obligations require estimates of factors such as: investment earnings, future salary increases, employee turnover, mortality rates, and life expectancy after retirement (Beechy Conrad, 2008). Actuarial models are used to generate the probabilities used to calculate the pension obligation today, that will result in the promised payout in the future. While companies do not have to worry about the funding status of DC plans, those that offer the DB plan bear the perpetual burden of ensuring that the plans are funded. From the very beginning, Smith introduces her father s favorite hobby; comedy. As it says, my father had few enthusiasms, but he loved comedy (1). She then goes on explaining the uniqueness of comedy, how it gave her father freedom and that their is no division of social status when it comes to comedy; comedy was and will always be true freedom. She informs the reader of several British comedians and comedy history, mentioning how they all had different styles. For example, one comedian would continuously make fun of himself, other would make fun of their culture, and social status. On the other hand, she also mentions that people do not have to be funny to go on stage. In the world of comedy, if you are absolutely determined to stand on a stage for five minutes with a mike in your hand, someone in London will let you do it, if only once (7). ... In many ways we do, our technology advances, we become more knowledgeable, and we as people evolve. However, we do not evolve in every way that we perhaps should. An example we can look at to see the ways some things have not changed much through examining two similar documents. Written in drastically different time periods, you would not think Lincoln s Gettysburg Address and Pericles s Epitaph would really have much in common. The two funeral orations do share their fair share of similarities in addition to their differences, though. To understand how the two documents compare we must first look at the context of both the Epitaph and the Gettysburg Address. Pericles s Epitaph was written roughly 2,000 years ago during the beginning of the Peloponnesian Wars. It comes to us through Thucydides in his history The Peloponnesian War. Pericles spoke after the first year of battle in the winter, and his speech was delivered at a public funeral for all those that were slain during the war. This is why his speech is often called the Funeral Oration of Pericles. He had been a general at the time and a natural choice to deliver a speech on those who died in battle. In addition to his status though, Pericles had a reputation for speaking only when it was truly important. • 30. Imagery In The Man I Killed And Ambush In the short stories The Man I Killed and Ambush, one of Tim O Brien s purposes is to describe how society wrongfully portrays soldiers gain a sense of pride and victory when they take lives of other human beings instead of the guilt driven battle they have to deal with for the rest of their lives. O Brien tries to disprove this theory and instead show they are actually stuck with this tragedy for the rest of their lives as they lose their innocence and sense of humanity. O Brien shows this through the use of imagery to portray and help develop this concept/theme. O Brien describes through vivid imagery and details in, The Man I Killed, the dead man s eye, His one eye shut, his other eye was a star shaped hole (118). Here O Brien uses this imagery to symbolize the star shape of the dead man s eye as a sign of hope as a shooting star, yet, he ties this beautiful image with death, to show that his hope/future has betrayed him. O Brien purposefully places this star shaped wound on the soldier s eye, for it is with the eyes that both the dead man and O Brien gaze upon the stars in the sky. As if he was gazing more upon the stars, upon his future, which in this case his future comes to an end with O Brien s fatal doing. O Brien s innocence has left him as he has become in a sense dirty after taking this man s life. So, in this case, O Brien has not taken this killing with pride and victory, but with sadness and guilt. This goes back to his purpose to show that soldiers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Analysis Of Malala And The Sealand Lady s Speech Persuasive Appeals Assignment The first appeal that will be analyzed is logos, the appeal to logic. In Malala s speech, the constant use of many statistics and facts made the speech much more reasonable and sensible. For example: And that is why they killed 14 innocent medical students in the recent attack in Quetta . Also, Thousands of people have been killed by the terrorists and millions have been injured. These quotes establish logic in the sense that if one uses statistics or facts, it shows that they ve done their research and they are aware of the issues happening globally. In the Sealand Lady s speech, the use of reasoning and common sense is evidently shown through quotes like It is not pleasant to kill any creature, she agreed, but to pretend that one can live without doing so is self deception and The essential quality of life is living; the essential quality of living is change; change is evolution: and we are a part of it. These quotes show that death is inevitable for life to form and although it s not pleasant, it still has to happen. Brooker states that the governments of dystopian societies in books such as We, Brave New World or Nineteen Eighty Four all use sexuality as the primary tool to control society. Brooker also points out that despite this consistent focus on sexuality in dystopian fiction, the major works of the genre have done relatively little to challenge conventional notions of gender roles . Although there is considerable emphasis on sexuality in dystopian fiction, Brooker argues that conventional notions of gender roles remain unchallenged in major works of the genre. He observes that even though these literary dystopias and utopias stress the importance of gender equality, they remain places where men are men and women are women, and in relatively conventional ways . • 37. Descartes Philosophy Descartes Philosophy Rene Descartes is a philosopher that lived during the Enlightenment period and is famous for his philosophy of methodological doubt. His method of doubt was psychological in character, involved a kind of rational insight, and implied a justified belief analysis of knowledge, with justification construed in terms of being unshakable. (Newman) An important function of his method was to enable people to redirect their attention from the senses to clear and distinct ideas through intellect, reason, and doubt. Descartes understood knowledge as advancing truth. The Enlightenment was an intellectual period that brought about ideas of God, reason, nature, and man. It was a period of political and social upheaval that brought about revolutions and a period of learning to think for oneself, employing and relying on the individual s capabilities to determine how to think and act. (Bristow) Philosophy of that period caused tension with established religions. By using the intellect to think and act, it required opposing the role of established religion by redirecting thoughts and actions. It brought people to a higher human existence that was more fulfilled. Men became more rational and developed goals of obtaining more knowledge, freedom, and happiness. • 38. Ideals Of Womanhood In Jane Eyre Fred Astaire is considered one of the greatest American dancers of all time, for his amazing choreography and flawless performances. However, a newspaper quipped that he could only be considered second best: his partner, Ginger Rogers, was better since she had to do everything he could, but backwards and in heels. Women being ignored or the assumption that women are lesser than men has been a constant social struggle. A century before Astaire and Rogers, British author Charlotte Brontë fought against Victorian sexism. Through her novel Jane Eyre, Brontë attempts to subvert the Victorian ideals for women. Professor Kathryn Hughes in the article Gender Roles in the 19th Century and Lynn Abrams, author of Ideals of Womanhood in Victorian Britain both explain that the expectation was for women and men to occupy separate spheres, with women occupying the domestic sphere meaning that they educated, seeking marriage. Brontë succeeds in challenging these Victorian standards for women, through the characterization and actions of Jane Eyre, and Rochester and others. The Victorian ideal elevates women in the moral sphere. Hughes explains that it was the job of women to counterbalance the moral taint of the public sphere [while] also preparing the next generation to carry on this way of life (Hughes 1). Women were expected both a better sense of morality and a strong educational background, exemplified by Jane s job as a governoress. Brontë manages to subvert women s moral ... To begin with, what exactly caused both of these quakes? Well, a cycle is happening above as well as beneath the surface. This cycle involves the movement of tectonic plates. Both of these earthquakes were caused by the movement of two very different plates. The Chilean earthquake was caused by the Nazca Plate sub ducting under the South American plate. This means these two plates collided along the plate boundaries, which made one slip underneath the other. The bottom plate slowly pushed the top plate, and was then released causing the earthquake. The magnitude for the quake was of 9.5, being the largest earthquake ever recorded. The Haiti quake was caused by a lateral strike slip motion. There was a separation in the boundary region of the Caribbean Plate and North American Plate. As the plates glided past one another, strain and compression was building along the fault. There was a release of energy that resulted in ground shaking. The Haiti earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0. The number of deaths and damages is the biggest difference between the two. You would think that the largest earthquake ever recorded would also have tragic numbers, but it didn t. The Chile earthquake reached an approximate number of about 2,000 deaths and. Virtue is another powerful motivator, but when faced with the choice, most humans, including Prospero, would choose vengeance. Shakespeare presents vengeance as a stronger influence than virtue in his play. The Tempest. In Shakespeare s The Tempest, the main character, Prospero is a very vengeful man, but he does not start out that way. His brother, Antonio, forced him out of his homeland without any resources, leaving him stranded with his three year old daughter. An event that traumatic can corrupt even the kindest human being. Prospero s need for justice compels him to wreck his brother s ship and strand him on the island. Prospero was not fueled by virtue to attack his brother s ship; he was fueled by vengeance. Prospero did not convince Alonso that his son had died because Prospero wanted to forgive him. He did this because he wanted Alonso to feel the pain that he had felt when he was left stranded with his three year old daughter. Prospero wanted to be justified, and he wanted the men who had hurt him to feel sorry for their actions. Virtue and vengeance are two of the strongest influences on human actions, but it is clear to see, through Shakespeare s work, that vengeance is the strongest. • 45. Analysis Of A Simple Heart By Flaubert In Gustave Flaubert s short story A Simple Heart Flaubert tells of the life of Felicite, a poor woman who does not seem to have any luck at all. Felicite is the kind of character that makes the reader pity her while at the same time finding her to be incredibly strange. Flaubert uses human emotions in a story that is incredibly simple in both word and tale to tell the reader of a woman who does not live a particularly exciting or happy life. Through this short story, Flaubert has given the reader a character that is simple but loving, strange yet human, and easily attached to things. Through his use of realism and a firm grasp on human emotions Flaubert has crafted a tale that is unlike any other. Felicite is a simple character. She does not have an education for one and for another she agrees to marry the man who tries to rape her. Flaubert writes At the edge of a field of oats, he pushed her roughly to the ground (785). One would think that Felicite would be done with a man that tried to do something like that to her, but instead, she forgives him almost immediately and agrees to marry him. This forgiving and forgetting part of Felicite s character is precisely why she is so simple yet loving. In her mind, she does not seem to see anything wrong with marrying the man who tried to force himself on her. In fact, it seems as if she is looking for any excuse in the world to find someone to love and to be able to love them in return. Felicite is also a seemingly very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Myiasis from Larvae and Pubic Lice Myiasis (from the Greek myi , fly) is defined as the invasion of living tissue by dipterous larvae. Several fly species such as Oestrus ovis have been reported to cause myiasis, affecting humans either directly, when the female fly deposits the larvae on the conjunctiva or eyelids of a human host rather than a sheep or a goat, or indirectly, through dirty hands. Ocular myiasis presentations include external ophthalmomyiasis, when the larvae is found in the external ocular tissues, leading to ocular surface disorders (conjunctivitis, punctuate keratitis) or pseudoorbital cellulitis, and internal ophthalmomyiasis, a rare condition with a clinical course ranging from asymptomatic to severe uveitis, retinal detachment and optic atrophy. Several methods of treatment have been reported depending on the location of the larva. Management of external myiasis includes the mechanical removal of the larvae in association with topical administration of steroids to reduce conjunctival inflammation.(1) This may be a challenging maneuver, as the larva tends to firmly attach to the ocular surface. Some authors recommend the use of topical anesthetic to loosen the larval attachment.(2) Double eversion of the eyelids is mandatory to ensure that larvae have been completely removed. Early removal decreases the potential of vision loss and larvae dissemination. For subretinal larvae, argon laser photocoagulation has been used with successful results.
