3. The Difference
Horizontal Type
● Shaft is normally in a
horizontal position. It is
sometimes overhung or
placed between bearing
design.
Vertical Type
● Shaft is in vertical
position; it is always an
overhang and of radial-
split case type design.

4. Horizontal Centrifugal Pumps - Pros & Cons
Pros:
● Easier to install and maintain.
● Can be directly coupled to electric motor, engine or turbine.
● Can opt for overhung or between-bearing depending on low or high suction
pressure.
● Can get various nozzle configurations that match your external site piping like:
○ end suction top discharge
○ top suction top discharge
○ side suction side discharge.
● Suitable for almost all indoor applications.

5. Cons:
● Applications become limited where NPSH(R) > NPSH(A)
● Requires an auxiliary booster pump.
● Maximum allowable operating temperature and working pressure is much
lower than that in a vertical inline pump.
● Bigger footprint is required for horizontal designs.

6. Vertical Centrifugal Pump - Pros & Cons
Pros:
● Smaller footprint than horizontal pumps.
● Suitable for spaces where the ground surface area is restricted.
● With vertical design,, the NPSH available can be increased.
● Suitable for higher temperature and high pressure fluids.

7. Cons:
● Require large headroom for installation & maintenance especially for multistage
units or turbine pumps.
● Such pumps can be used only when direct coupling with an electric motor is
available. It is not a perfect choice with engine or turbine.
● Due to the overhang design, it becomes difficult to balance the hydraulic axial
thrust especially while dealing with high suction pressures.
● Multistage vertical inline pump would requires expensive barrel and pit.
● It will be prone to various issues in its mechanical seals when it has to pump
liquids with high dissolved gases.
