TOPICS OF SUBMERSIBLE PUMP
 Classification of submersible pump
 Types of Impellers
 Pump casings

CLASSIFICATION OF PUMP:
 1.Dynamic pumps / Kinetic pumps
 2. Displacement Pumps/Positive displacement
pumps
DISPLACEMENT PUMPS
The positive displacement principle applies in these pumps:
 Rotary lobe pump
 Progressive cavity pump
 Rotary gear pump
 Piston pump
 Diaphragm pump
 Screw pump
 Gear pump
 Hydraulic pump
 Rotary vane pump

Submersible pump :
Submersible pump (also
known as storm water pumps, sewage pumps,
septic pumps) can still operate when being fully
submerged in water. There are 2 types.
DEEP WELL SUBMERSIBLE PUMP
SHORT SETTING SUBMERSIBLE
PUMP
DEEP WELL SUBMERSIBLE PUMP : -
• This pump is generally uses in high head of water required .
• In this pump impellers is above the induction moter .
• Number of Impellers is more then one .
• Less discharge as compare to short setting submersible
pump .
• Diffuser are use.
SHORT SETTING SUBMERSIBLE PUMP : -
• This pump is generally uses in low head of water required .
• In this pump impellers is below the induction moter .
• Number of Impellers is not more then one .
• High discharge as compare to deep well submersible pump .
• Diffuser are not use.
IMPELLER : -
> A submersible is a centrifugal pump .The rotating part of submersible
pump is called impeller . It consist of a series of backward curved
vanes type . Many of the impeller are connected of the single
shaft
and this shaft is driven by the induction moter
> The water inter to the impeller in centrifugal action now the water is
come through the next impeller is a stationary devise is
called a diffuser is used in purpose.
> The water inters the diffuser the diffuser deflect the inlet water and then
make to inlet the next impeller stage.
> The next impeller is connected to the outlet of this diffuser. The series
of impellers is connected to the one shaft ..
TYPES OF IMPELLERS : - There are three types of impeller are uses in
pumps.
Closed impeller : - Curve vanes Backward and frontward side plate is closed.
Not a liquid slippage.
low viscosity fluid is use,(Ex.-water , hot water , acids etc )
High head , high flow use.
high efficiency.
Semi open impeller : - Curve vanes Backward side is closed .
Industry use.
Open impeller : - Open curve vanes .
Rough duty perform ( abrasive work like sand and water
mixture
SEMI OPEN
Casing : -
> When the liquid comes out from the impeller, liquid velocity is very
high at that time then at that time it is necessary that changing liquid
kinetic energy to pressure energy but before the discharge of the pum
It should also be noted that the energy loss is minimam
> To complete this task, the air tight seal that is used around the pump
impeller is called casing .
Design basis three types:-
1) Volute type casing :- * spiral type.
* tang through flow area discharge gradually
increase.
* as per area increase then velocity will be decrease
* single stage pump used volute type casing.
* eddy formation losses.
* less efficiency as compare to other casing.
2)Vortex type casing:- * circular chamber include b/w impeller and casing.
* kinetic energy convert into pressure energy.
* Eddy formation can be less.
* pump efficiency increase more then volute type
casing.
3)Casing with guide vanes:-* impeller cover by guide vanes this is known as
diffuser.
* diffuser are converted kinetic energy into pressure
E.
* In this casing used series of impeller. Ex;- deep
well
* high costly as compare to volute casing.
Stages :- Stage in any pump means number of impellers in a pump to get a desired
pressure. Know more about submersible pump.
Coupling:-
A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the
purpose of transmitting power . The primary purpose of couplings is to join two
pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end
movement or both.
