In the fall, as I entered my first semester of college I had an overwhelming rush of
emotions; I was nervous and uneasy. I had left not only my home, but also my city

murmur they drained ВЅ a gallon of fluid off of his lungs, then they discovered he
had Cirrhosis of the Liver. They went ahead and did the surgery anyways. They
removed a cancer tumor off of his skull the size of a golf ball, they also had to
remove part of his skull and they filled it in with metal mesh. They came home on
the 15th of September, they have to leave again on the 27th of September to get
the 100+ staples he has in his head due to surgery removed. Then they will both
come back for a while, but the downside is they have to go back to Seattle, WA. for
a solid seven weeks or more for chemotherapy. My Great Grandfather (My mom s
Grandfather) had a type of cancer and it has no cure. He got sick in December of
2013 while on vacation in Arizona, he thought it was a common cold, so when they
came home he kept taking cold medicine. In the middle of January beginning of
March the pharmacist told him he needed to go visit a doctor and find out what was

jumps onto his skateboard. This gives you the impression that he is a typical
American boy who hates school and likes video games and skateboarding,
e.t.c… The camera then cuts to a man who is wearing safety gloves and
handling chemicals, which indicates he is working. A whistle then blows, and the
mans face lights up as he exits to the left. The eagerness he expresses to leave,
indicates he is related somehow to the previous boy, as he was also keen to exit
and did not like working. Next, it shows a supermarket, with a mother doing her
groceries. You also see the baby crawling along the belt where the food is placed.
This scene indicates that the woman is a busy housewife, who looks after her
children, and there is also a hint of comedy as the shop assistant scans the baby. Now,
the audience has been introduced to two more of the main characters. After that, it
changes to a shot of the school band. They start off by playing together but one girl
starts to play her own, fabulous tune on the saxophone. When the teacher points to the
door, she walks out, untroubled, and this gives you the impression that she is very

56. What Is Dicky s Relationship With His Environment
As the main protagonist of the story, it is important to examine Dicky s relationship
to his environment, and the related ideas of poverty and responsibility. Dicky isn t
able to exercise any control over the terrible slum environment. He is a subject, rather
than an active agent, in his own life due to the overwhelming depravity of his setting
and the futility of his attempts to escape it. The povertyof the slumenvironment proves
stifling for Dicky a contemporary critic wrote that the novel, as a story of the
career of a child of the slums, does not give enough space to the principal character
(Cubitt 170), forcing the reader to look more closely at the space of the Jago as
one of poverty, and only realise the degradation and loss of innocence in the
protagonist when it is too late. Furthermore, Morrison s physical description of the
child is limited to discussion of his poverty, as his only noticeable characteristic is
that he is wearing a ragged jacket (Morrison 14) these rags relate him to other
presentations of street children but strip him of his individuality. Dicky is presented
as a type , one of many other children living in this destructive environment of
poverty and crime. However, Dicky starts the text with a clear knowledge of the
Jago environment and the role that he will be forced to play as a child of poverty.
