She is strong and courageous, and she overcomes many obstacles in her path. Alba
represents the unification of the different types of protests throughout the novel
and their most recent successes (Garcia 1). Alba actually attends a pro socialist
protest. During this time period in Latin America, many socialists were feminists
and vise versa. Alba attends the protest with her boyfriend whom she loves more
than anything, Miguel. Miguel is a strong believer is socialism and persuades his
girlfriend Alba to stick by his side and protest with him. She agrees and the two
fight for what they think is right. Alba gets captured by the communists who
imprison and rape her as punishment and revenge for what her father did to native
women many years ago. Esteban used to rape women and abandon them if they
got pregnant, and know Alba, the person he loves most, is paying the price. Alba
survives the torture she had to endure due to her father s previous mistakes and is
eventually found by Esteban. Alba tells the reader at the end of the book that she
does not want to continue the cycle of terrible things women in her family have
had to endure. Alba says I have to break that terrible chain. I want to think that my
task is life and that my mission is not to prolong hatred (Allende 432). After
learning that she is pregnant, she is unsure if the baby is Miguel s or one of her
many imprisoners that raped her multiple times. She plans to break the chain and do
her own thing but having the baby no matter what and not get an abortion. She wants
her child to prosper as a strong, beautiful young women. Alba is a strong woman that
stands up for the things she believes in, and she has survived so much unimaginable
and unspeakable torture. Despite her past, Alba still survives as one of the strongest
and bravest characters in the novel

the Jewish laws like working on the Sabbath or eating certain foods because in His

clarifier of the Law making sure future generations knew what is ethical. In addition,
many of the sacrificial laws were done away with when Jesus became the ultimate

outward laws were fulfilled permanently by Jesus, practices like offering burnt
sacrifices or not eating certain types of meets are no longer necessary because of
