my seven year old self thinks is a fascinating palace with extravagant luxury. It only

Middle school is where it all started. Just mentioning the word middle school can
dig up popular and gooey or humiliating and traumatic memories. Seven long hours
before my very first day, I didn t have a sliver of a chance of falling into any level
of sleep. My thoughts were in a frazzle with anticipation, weighing heavy to
remember my seven class schedule, hoping I can run fast enough from my class in
the far north corner up the stairs and down a very long hallway to the south
dwelling class. Trying to keep my combination straight, I sounded like a likely

left in the transportation industry that have unregulated work shift hours in the
United States. Twenty four hour work shifts are common among the EMT
industry and the resulting fatigue is causing mental and physical health issues
with EMT s as well as safety issues for both EMT s and the patients they are
responding to. I believe that the EMT profession needs work hour regulation
similar to those of long haul truck drivers, medical residents, pilots and railroad
conductors. Virtually every branch of commercial or public transportation has

reading this sentence, a victim dies of TB (Farrell 113). To First World countries,

During the Holiday Season, the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore has a
Christmas Exhibition. I attended the Christmas exhibition Friday, November 25,
2016, during the lunch hours. The inner harbor always has an exhibition or activity
for the public, during every season. The Christmas Village brings different cultures
together to experience the holiday season. The Inner Harbor has an Ice Skating Rink,
a German ChristmasVillage, and a Santa Claus impersonator to take pictures with.
The Pandora Ice Skating Rink is a newer edition to the Inner Holiday setup. I paid a
small fee of ten dollars to skate and four dollars to rent skates. It is a beautiful
experience to ice skate beside the water and to see all the people walk along the
harbor. The ice skating rink plays Christmas music to get patrons into a festive mood.
The rink is usually busy during the weekends, but since it was the thanksgiving

The only real power the State holds over any individual is the promise of brute
force; it never intentionally confronts a man s sense, intellectual or moral, but only
his body, his senses (687). Therefore, many acts the State requires will be unjust

Understandably, people who are consistently awake, in this sense of the word, are
hard to find: There are nine hundred and ninety nine patrons of virtue to one virtuous
man (680).

According to the textbook, Life Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol
Sigelman, on page 50, adolescents who reach the formal operations are able to think
more abstractly and hypothetically than school age children. They can define justice
abstractly, in terms of fariness, rather than concretely, in terms of the cop on the
corner or the judge in the courtroom. They can formulate hypotheses or predictions in
their heads, plan how to systematically test their ideas experimentally, and imagine
the consequences of their tests. As of right now, I believe that I am currently in the
formal operations stage of Piaget s cognitive development theory. This stage occurs

to come up with hyptoheses in the laboratory, test them, and draw conclusions.
One last example that the formal operations stage allows me to do is problem

For this essay, I ve chosen to write about Epictetus thoughts on stoicism, Foer s
Extremely Loud Incredibly Close, and Tolstoy s The Death of Ivan Ilyich. I chose
these three texts for a few reasons. Perhaps most importantly, they represent the three
I have considered the most throughout this semester. As such, they are three of the
ones I can most easily recall. Additionally, they have differing views of pain and
suffering that will be interesting to explore together. The main way these three texts
differ is in their representation of pain. In Epictetus writing, pain is depicted as
something to be avoided at all costs. His whole philosophy of stoicism aims to
remove pain and suffering entirely from life, as he considers it something... Show

the text, Ivan is obsessed with his pain and suffering, from when it begins as a
nagging pain in his side until he ruminates on it day and night while on his death

suffering that Ivan feels from confronting his own mortality and impending death,

Hans Zimmer is one of the most famous composers in the world. One can hear his
music in a multitude of video games, movies, and television shows. He has
composed for movies like The Lion King, The Prince of Egypt, Pearl Harbor,
Batman Begins, and Gladiator. He is best known for his work with electronic
synthesizers and keyboards. His works are well renowned around the world, and
will be remembered throughout the ages. Hans Zimmer was born in Germany, but
was raised mostly in England (AllMusic). By the time he was six, he knew he
wanted to be a composer, despite having no formal musical training. When he was a
teenager, he began to compose advertising jingles for television commercials
(Encyclopedia). He met British musicians Geoff Downs and Trevor Horn when he

The score for this movie took him about three and a half weeks to compose, but was
the score that earned him a Golden Globe, Chicago Films Critic Awards, two
Grammys, and American Music Award, and his only Academy Award to date
(Encyclopedia).
Zimmer s next big hit was Gladiator, which garnered an Oscar nomination, as well as
Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critic Awards nominations (Hans Zimmer). The
album for Gladiator soon became one of the best selling film score albums of all time
(FilmTracks). His popularity grew even more, and he also became the composer for
films such as The Road to El Dorado, The Prince of Egypt, Pearl Harbor, and Pirates
of the Caribbean (Hans Zimmer).
Hans Zimmer is different than other film composers in that he does not perform live
very often. In fact, he did not perform live until the 27th Annual Flanders
International Film Festival in 2011. Zimmer performed with a 100 piece orchestra
and 100 piece choir. The concert was recorded and released as a concert album later

Introduction:
Throughout history, social movement organizations (SMOs) or small groups,
loosely connected by a shared purpose have created transformational change.
Charles Tilly defines social movements as a series of contentious performances,
displays and campaigns, by which ordinary people make collective claims on others
(Tilly 2004:3). Examples of these movements are the Women s suffrage, civil rights
and the LGBTQ movement. Similar forces are transforming businesses, military
affairs and religion. SMOs have become an important part of society because these
movements provide a forum for grievances and demands to be heard. These
movements also provide citizens an institution outside of the traditional political
system.
The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to better understand the potential connection
between the old and new movements and 2) determine if a certain theory, strategy,
method or goal makes a social movement more or less successful compared to others
as it takes more than feelings of frustration to persuade an individual to sacrifice time,
money, relationships on these grievances. As will be indicated in the literature
review, there are several arguments concerning the success of social movements.

This literature review provides an overview of the major ideas represented in the
literature of social movement theory. McAdam, McCarthy and Zald (1996) offer a
framework intended to explain social movements emergence, development and
