Reading Of An Extract From The Cuckoo Clock
Close Reading of an Extract From The Cuckoo Clock Mrs. Molesworth s The Cuckoo Clock was
originally published in 1877. During this point in history, children s literature typically focused on the
instruction of children. Children were seen as blank slates upon which adults carved moral values.
Many authors, Mrs. Molesworth s included, incorporated these moral values into easy to digest and
entertaining narratives. This extract from The Cuckoo Clock, titled Obeying Orders , combines
didacticism with elements of fantasy that capture the imaginations of its intended child audience.
While the tale centers around a magical cuckoo clock, it never fails especially with the narrator s
assistance to remind children of the lessons they must learn in order to grow into proper adults. The
narrator in The Cuckoo Clock speaks in a loving, yet educative manner, like an aunty imparting words
of wisdom to her young nieces and nephews. On page 45, when the narrator first directly enters the
narrative, she says, For fairies, you know, children, however charming, are sometimes rather queer to
have to do with. This sentence alone suggests many things about the narrator. When she addresses her
intended audience, children, directly, she encourages them to participate in the story being told; one
can imagine a group of children nodding their heads along in agreement. She also appeals to their
intelligence by implying that they are already familiar with the information she is about to impart,

Physics Personal Statement
For years I have shown a passion for physics and I aspire to read it at a deeper level because of its
many phenomena and applications, and the need for skilled physicists in the world, as without them,
civilisation would struggle to thrive. The thought process and unique perceptions that physicists have
are key in driving businesses and other innovations. Furthermore, society is hugely reliant on
technology, resulting in physicists becoming increasingly important to both maintaining and creating
new technological ideas. For example my work experience at Sky allowed me to see how the approach
that the physicists there took enabled them to be very successful in their line of work. More
importantly however, the beauty of physics is found on an intrinsic level which allows us to
understand the universe we live in. For thousands of years, religious beliefs dominated explanations
for important ideas such as how the universe was created, the afterlife, and of course the question of a
deity. Religion shaped society for many years, but the intervention of physics has bravely challenged
these once readily accepted views, creating a society that consists of ... Show more content on

Since Year 7, I have found myself to be naturally able and passionate towards mathematics and I
maintained excellent grades throughout high school. Despite my enjoyment of mathematics and the
satisfaction I get from solving problems, I always asked myself how these laws were helpful in the
world and I found more answers when I turned to physics and saw my mathematical skills being used
to practical effect. I realised just how immersed I was becoming in physics when whilst enjoying
theme park rides, I started to examine the physics behind the rides and mentally solved calculations to
figure out the force being used to meet the velocities in the record times they claimed. From this point
I dived into physics and knew I wanted to study it

Age Related Dysphonia Case Study
The aging process impacts the vocal mechanism as it does any other system of the body. In one of the
few studies that reviewed vocal disorders in the geriatric population, the incidence of vocal disorders
in people 65 years or older was between 12% and 35%. (Davids, Klein, Johns, 2012). Of that
population, 25% had vocal fold atrophy as the cause of their disorder. (Davids, et al., 2012). A 2006
study conducted on 100 assisted living residents found the incidence of age related dysphonia to be
around 20% (Golub, Chen, Otto, Hapner, Johns, 2006). It further found that the impact of this disorder
had a percieved negative impact on quality of life in 13% of the test poplutation (Golub et al., 2006).

One such program, designed by Joseph Stemple, Ph.D., SLP, is a series of voice manipulations that
were designed to strengthen and balance the laryngeal musculature and to balance airflow to the
muscular effort. (Stemple, JC., Lee, L., D Amico, B., Pickup, B., 1994). In 2011, Tay et al., (2012)
conducted a study on the efficacy of VFE on 22 members of a community choral. Participants were
between 68 and 83 years of age and divided in to a control and VFE groups evenly. After the 5 week
study was complete, the VFE group had greater MPT that the control group. The VFE group showed
post VFE training decreases in mean jitter, shimmer and nose to harmonics ratio percentages as
evaluated using a series of two way repeated measures analysis of variance (Tay et al, 2012). The
participant s perceived effectiveness of the VFE (as reported in a post training survey) was that the
program had a positive effect on their voices (Tay et al, 2012). Phonation resistance training exercises

uses Silverman s loud voice approach while using high intensity phonatory exercises to overload the
respiratory and laryngeal systems. (Berg, E., Hapner, E., Klein, A., Johns, M., 2008). In their 2008

Father And Mother In Aria Beth Sloss s North
(P1) In Aria Beth Sloss short story, North, the narrative is told from the perspective of a child as
he/she talks about his/her parents. The narrator opens the piece by telling the reader that his/her father,
Thomas, was an explorer who left for an expedition and was never heard from again (Sloss 2). The
narrative then continues into a description of the relationship between the father and mother. The
mother, Mary, was considered a wild woman (Sloss 5) growing up. Her family had concerns that she
was unsuitable for any man. Upon meeting each other, the narrator s mother and father found common
ground in that they both loved adventure and had a habit of disappearing (Sloss 5). As the story
progresses into the couple s married life, the father is described to be a man in love (Sloss 7) with the
wilderness like a schoolboy (Sloss 7). He cannot be home from expeditions long without getting
restless. As days pass, the father spends his time planning his next adventure, a hot air balloon ride to
the Arctic, something that he claims will write his name beside Darwin s in the history books (Sloss
13). The father does not tell Mary of his plans and she does not tell him of the loneliness that has
struck her sudden as a storm (Sloss 13) from his lack of presence. One day though, Mary and Thomas
have sex and Mary feels as though something dangerous is running through her (Sloss 21). Days later,
she learns she is pregnant, but does not get to tell her husband as he

Sub-urbanization in America Essay
Sub urbanization in America AHousing is an outward expression of the inner human nature; no society
can be understood apart from the residences of its members.@ That is a quote from the suburban
historian Kenneth T. Jackson, from his magnificent piece on suburbanization Crabgrass Frontier.
Suburbanization has been probably the most significant factor of change in U.S. cities over the last 50
years, and began 150 years ago. It represents Aa reliance upon the private automobile, upward
mobility, the separation of the family into nuclear units, the widening division between work and
leisure, and a tendency toward racial and economic exclusiveness.@ Overall it may represent the
change in attitude of the American people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such an economic shift is identified as being a result of Awhite flight@, where the urban whites fled
to the suburbs after WWII, with the immigrants, blacks, and rural dwellers moving in. The economy
switched from an industrial economy to a post industrial or service economy, with the older factories
being replaced by smaller factories (computers, airplanes, appliances), requiring higher skilled
workers. In effect these new factories were located outside the city in the suburbs. The central city
would be left with nothing, and virtually no opportunities of any magnitude. Detroit is a city that I
believe can be identified as the city which went through the greatest amount of change, being heavily
relied on one industry. During the first half of the twentieth century, Detroit was probably the most
economically booming city in the United States. Since about 1950, Detroit has gone from Aarsenal of
democracy@, having one of the fastest growing populations and was home to the highest paid
working class workers as well, to losing nearly 1 million people. Many jobs were also lost with many
business leaving the city of today empty and sometimes complete city blocks left completely empty.
Detroit has also been home to a host of infrastructure woes, as can be reflected in many other cities in
the Industrial Belt of the northeast with decaying roads, sewers, and other physical features.

Lark Ascending Analysis
Compare and Contrast Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams and The First Cuckoo In Spring by Delius
Florence Bird The Lark Ascending was written in 1914 however the score was thoroughly revised
between the years 1919 1920 with the first performance being on December 15th 1920. The
performance lasts for approximately 13 minutes and the orchestra consists of two flutes, an oboe, two
clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, a triangle, and strings. The piece was inspired by traditional
English folk song and also the works of George Meredith. This is shown in the pastoral style of the
piece and depicts a traditional English landscape painting with rolling hills and larks calling to one

It is opened by a sustained major seventh chord on the tonic (C major) to establish a misty morning
scene. The oboe continues to introduce a bird like pattern followed by a triple meter slow string
melody with drones richly harmonising in the cellos and basses. This rhythm; crotchet, minim,
crotchet minim, is widely used in Delius s works. There are passing tones which creates discordance
at times when played against the harmonic roots. The strings flutter on the final held note and then the
clarinet plays the traditional cuckoo call. Throughout the middle section which is based around the
Norwegian folk song, In Ola Valley this cuckoo call is reintroduced several times. The strings play a
small looping pattern before the end of the managing to create simple yet rich new harmonies. A major
chord dies away to silence. This ending is also similar to Lark Ascending as both pieces fade away

I 35 W Bridge Failure And Reconstruction
I 35 W Bridge Failure and Reconstruction
Introduction:
The I 35W Mississippi river bridge also known as Bridge 9340 officially was an eight lane, steel truss
arch bridge which carried the Interstate 35W across the Mississippi river connected the downtown east
and Marcy Holmes. Its construction began in the year 1964, was finally opened in 1967. It connected
the northeast of Metrodome on its south end and the University of Minnesota on the North end. The
bridge was the boundary of Mississippi Mile downtown riverfront parkland. The north foundation of
the bridge was near the hydroelectric plant built in 1988. The south abutment was in an area polluted
by the coal gas processing plant. There weren t any mentions of this in the failure investigations. The
bridge was a continuous truss bridge that had a total span of 1,907 ft. It was an 8 lane bridge having a
width of 113.3ft. and was 115 ft. high. It was designed by Sverdrup Parcel to 1961 AASHO (American
Association Of State Highway Officials) standard specifications. The construction contract worth
more than US $5.2 million at the time, went to Hurcon Inc. and Industrial Construction Company,
which built the steel trusses and deck. The piers were not built in the navigation channel instead the
center span of the bridge consisted of a single 456 foot steel truss over a 390 foot channel being the
longest span of the bridge.

The Importance Of A Democratic Country Public Opinion
1. Introduction
For a democratic country public opinion is the most important determinant to establish a government
and voting is the process through which people display their opinion and help to setup a democratic
government. So the voting system should be reliable, accurate and it must be transparent.
In voting systems, three important requirements are identified:
Universal verifiability: After the election any party, including a passive observer, can convince himself
that the election was fair in the sense that the published final tally is computed correctly from ballots
that were correctly cast. Privacy: All individual votes will be kept secret from any (reasonably sized)
coalition of parties.
Robustness: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They then publicly set the 4 totals to zero by pressing the CLEAR button, after which the control unit
display shows that a total of zero votes have been cast. Workers can check this count at any time by
pressing the TOTAL button. Seals are then placed on various parts of the control unit to block access
to counting and clearing functions until later in the election process. When a voter arrives, workers
verify his or her identity and record the voter s presence by obtaining a signature or thumb print. Next,
a poll worker presses the BALLOT button on the control unit to allow one vote. This causes a green
READY light to glow on the ballot unit. The voter enters the polling booth and presses the button for
the candidate of his or her choice. A red light next to the candidate button glows, the ready light turns
off, and the control unit emits a loud beep to indicate that the vote has been cast. The red light then
turns off automatically. This process repeats for each voter. At the end of the poll, the presiding officer
removes a plastic cap on the control unit and presses the CLOSE button, which prevents the EVM
from accepting further votes. The ballot unit is disconnected and the control unit is placed in storage
until the public count, which may occur weeks later. On the counting day, the control units are
delivered to a counting center. In public view, an election official breaks a seal on the

Sororities Research Paper
Sorority life is more than the parties, frat boys and booze. It s about being apart of a community and
the traditions and rituals that have been around of hundreds of years. The average young woman
should consider joining a sorority because of what they stand for and the benefits that it can bring you.
Although sororities can by pricey and seem to have a bad reputation in the media, they give young
women values to live by, networking opportunities for the work force and a long lasting sisterhood.
Movies and the social media do not give sororities justice. They showcase them as a bunch of mean,
ditsy girls who want to party and get their M.R.S. degree but I can personally say that sororities are
much more than the stereotype that they are given by society and portrayed in the media. Sororities

Technology And Technology Today
Technology Today
The effects of technology with society has beneficial impacted the way we live. With technology is
providing many advantages, but also it has some disadvantages it has on children and adults. There is
little room for people that wish to live without technology, moreover than living the way they did in
the old days. Technology has its advantages, it s has changed the way people have communicated by
email, social media, the way traveling has improved.
Have you ever heard the saying Children are born with a cell phone in their hands? In today society,
children may not be born with technology in their hands, but they are introduced to it sometimes even
before they can even walk. Technology is so advanced than what it used to be, children as young as
babies can use it and learn from it. I am for my child using technology, to help learn and to expand her
mind. Everything that children see and interact with is involved with technology, for example:
cellphones, tablets, video games, and many other things.
In elementary school the students are mandatory to learn how to use the computers. This allows the
students to learn how to use the computer appropriately. Learning tools for school is at the student

Essay on Atonement by Ian McEwan
Atonement by Ian McEwan
Atonement comes from an at onement , the idea being that penance and suffering allows us to be at
one with God or ourselves. The central theme of atonement is that of seeking forgiveness. This is
manifested through the characters and their actions. In the book Atonement by
Ian McEwan, the act carried out by Briony sets of a chain of events, for which either atonement is
sought or society seeks atonement from.
Briony s character is described as being compulsively orderly,
She was one of those children possessed by a desire to have the world just so.

books and having his letters censored. He was only permitted his mother to visit after being diagnosed
as morbidly over sexed and at risk of being inflamed .
Briony only starts to realise her crime as she grows older. In a letter to Robbie, Cecelia paraphrases a
letter from Briony,
She s beginning to get the full grasp of what she did I think she wants to recant.
When Briony goes to visit Cecelia, the reader comprehends that Briony doesn t want to withdraw her
statement for Robbie s benefit but instead to find favour with her sister and to reassemble her previous
family life:
I don t expect you to forgive me.
Don t worry about that , she said soothingly, Briony flinched as her hopes lifted unreally. Don t worry
, her sister resumed. I won t ever forgive you.
The climax to the scene comes when Robbie makes his presence known to
Briony. Robbie and Cecelia tell Briony that she has to tell everyone what she did. She agrees then
says,
I m very sorry.
Robbie said softly, Just do all the things we asked.

The Terminator By James Cameron
The Terminator was written by James Cameron and came out in 1984.1 It tells of a post apocalyptic
world dominated by a war between humans and artificially intelligent robots, called terminators. The
movie was produced at the beginning of the Digital Age, and computer development and use was
beginning to increase. Computer companies like Apple and Microsoft had recently been founded and
some of the first personal computers were being created. Many wondered if society was becoming too
dependent of technology . In addition to computers, all forms of technology were rapidly improving
during this time period. The Terminator predicts that the relationship between man and computer turns
bad when the computer is given too much power. Ultimately, mankind creates its own downfall.
Furthermore, the terminator is seen as superior to the human characters in the movie. The Terminator
has no feelings of pain, anger, remorse, or any other kind of emotions. It seems to be a flawless killer,
unmatched by its weak creators. The Terminator embodies people s fears of the advancement of
technology and its impact on society.
The Terminator takes place over the course of a week in the 1980s in an unknown town. The movie is
about a robot (a terminator ) that goes back in time to kill a woman named Sarah Connor and a man
named Kyle Reese who tries to save her. The terminator begins to systematically kill women named

Clarence In The Play It s A Wonderful Life
It s a Wonderful Life
In the play It s a Wonderful Life the transitions the play writers incorporated between scenes was
comprehensible to the child I was with as well as myself. During the play it appeared to me that the
actors Ken Griggs and Jessica Osnoe did not look the role they were playing as George and Mary. As
through casting an acting crew I felt that the look and age of the actor should fit the role he or she is
playing. However, the role of Clarence played by James Dean was portrayed sufficiency. James voice,
costume and personality as the character Clarence in my opinion sold the show.
Throughout the show, there were various transitions from scene to scene. The play writers I though did
a fantastic job with this as I never lost sight of what was going on in the. Through transitions I feel
that it is easy for a person to lose sight of meaning of the scene though the transition. Losing sight of
what was occurring never happened to me as I followed along well. The play writers and cast would
not let the audience lose sight, as they would bring in symbols to make the transition clear. For
example, George lost his father due to a heart attach ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

George as he went back in time to picture his life. When looking at Ken I saw a few wrinkles along
with aging in body that you would not see in a 18 or 19 year old. To fix this problem I would suggest
the play writers to cast another actors to play the roles of the younger Mary and George. I feel this will

Analysis of Act Three Scene Five of William Shakespeare s...
Analysis of Act Three Scene Five of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare s
Romeo and Juliet is a dramatic tragedy, and was first performed in 1595. The novel is about two
young lovers, Romeo Juliet and the struggle with their relationship. Romeo and Juliet are from
opposing families, the Montagues and the Capulets. The conflict between their two families causes
problems for their love of one another. Shakespeare s main themes throughout the play are of love,
conflict and of youth versus age. The scene that we are analysing, Act 3 Scene 5 is one of the most
important scenes in the novel. This is mainly because; the character of Juliet is developed
tremendously. Juliet s feelings and thoughts are shown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They understand Juliet s problem. Juliet then says, He shall not make me a joyful bride, she says this
but does not give a reason why, even though the audience know it is because she is deeply in love with
Romeo and not Paris. Juliet then goes on to say I will not marry yet, and when I do, I swear It shall be
Romeo, Lady Capulet does not know that Juliet is already married to Romeo but the audience do
know. This makes the audience aware of the relationship between Juliet and her mother, they are not
close at all and Juliet does not think twice about lying to her. Also, when Lord Capulet is shouting at
Juliet that she must marry Paris on Thursday, the nurse says God in heaven bless her. The nurse is
telling Lord Capulet to stop shouting at Juliet, just because she does not want to marry yet. She says
this even though she knows Juliet does not want to marry Paris because she is already married to
Romeo. Lord Capulet does not know this. The effect of dramatic irony is that one character does not
know what is going on while the audience do. This makes the audience more aware of what is going
on in the scene. It also shows the gaps in people s relationships, such as Juliet and her mother.
Shakespeare s uses of language are very important throughout Act 3 Scene 5. When Juliet is talking to
her mother about the death of Tybalt and about Romeo, she uses words that can mean two things.
Indeed I never shall be

Marxism, And The Data-Free Man
In the Introduction of this text, Berger refers to the Data Man, and the Data Free Man. The Data man
is just as explained, he is a character who is representing researchers who base their research on
evidence such as statistics. Data Free man on the other hand bases his finding more in theories that

these two heroes as the Optimist and the Realist. The Data Free Man wants to figure out in if his
theory will work, so he backs it up with more theories. On the other hand, Data Man is getting hard
facts to prove his case. Another way that I am seeing these two are on two sides of politics. The

Primary Cause Of The Civil War Essay
The Civil War began from the battle at Fort Sumter, where the Confederacy took Fort Sumter from the
Union. The root of the Civil War is probably one of the most disputed topics in American history.
Some historians argue that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War, whereas others
argue that slavery may have been a reason, but not the primary cause of the Civil War. They argued
that the main reason of the Civil War was State s rights were being jeopardized, which led to the State
s seceding from the Union. Starting off, the Civil War began because the south wanted slavery mainly

Lincoln didn t have the power to do that. They claimed state s rights gave the power to decide if
slavery was legal or not to state governments and not the Federal government. The issue was not
slavery, but who decided whether slavery was acceptable, local institutions or a distant central
government power. The war was indeed about protecting the institution of slavery, but only as a
specific case of a state s right to declare a federal law null and void. Southern states sought to secede
because they believed that the federal government had no authority to tell them how to run their
affairs. The primary reason for the Civil War was indeed because of slavery. The South wanted to
break from the North because the South wanted to allow slavery whereas, the North wanted to end
slavery. There was no controversy on whether the war began over the fact that the North wanted to
end slavery whereas the South didn t. However, people soon began to declare the Civil War began
mainly because of the State s worry of their rights. According to William Walker, views on the

Dry White Season Essay
Summary Dry White Season Adam Simon CGW 4U1 Dry White Season was what I felt to be an
exemplary interpretation of how native South Africans truly condemned the immoral Apartheid
political system of the mid 1900 s. Though the film was quite graphic, explicit nature seemed
necessary to prove how racial brutality towards the black community really did exist. I enjoyed the
whole idea of a narrow minded white man making the transition from a life of socially superior racial
prejudice to become a devoted supporter of black rights. I found this really helped create a strong
liberal message to aid viewers in understanding the sick intolerance of the majority of white South
Africans at that time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Benjamin is the hero; the incoherent individual that learns an unpleasant lesson due to one event that
changed the course of all events prior, (Gordon s death) Captain Stoltz was the villain; the sadistic,
power hungry oppressor with manipulative ways that ended up determining his fate, Johan represented
the loyal and resourceful character that led the viewer to believe there was a shed of hope throughout
any struggle, and Stanley was the character I ve seen way too often, the random bystander that
provides the cathartic release by ultimately giving the villain what he deserved. Despite some
predictable qualities, the characters were still interesting. I thought Donald Sutherland played the part
of Benjamin superbly. His air of seriousness and integrity really keep me interested in his character.
Sure, he was naïve before the death of Gordon, and it was best to just let it go at first, but he grew
from being pessimistic and cynical, to an entirely optimistic, likeable person to me the end by going
neck deep into the mystery of Gordon s disappearance. My favourite character of all though, was no
doubt Mr. McKenzie. Though he only was vaguely present, he absolutely dominated the screen during
the courtroom trial. I found his use of sarcastic remarks in the courtroom hilarious, yet so fittingly
applicable to his realist character. He clearly is a trail blazer in the sense that he is a white man
fighting for black rights, yet he does so anyways, just to

Philosophy On Justice
Justice is a moral as well as a political concept. The meaning of Justice varies from one political
thinker to another. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a just person as one who typically does
what is morally right and is disposed to giving everyone his or her due. Philosophers, both modern and
medieval, went beyond etymology and dictionary meanings to understand the right meaning of justice.
The nature of justice as both a moral virtue of character and a desirable quality of political society, as
well as how it applies to ethical and social decision making were the most important topics that were
studied by the philosophers. Most of the philosophers had their own theories of justice on various
social issues such as civil disobedience, punishment, equal opportunity for women, slavery, war,
property rights, and international relations. According to Plato, justice is ... Show more content on

John Locke was one such philosopher who believed in this natural law. Justice requires according
individuals or groups to get what they actually deserve or what they are entitled to. Just like Newton s
third law of motions every action has an equal and opposite reaction , justice ensures that every
unlawful or unjust actions are met with such reactions that there is a balance in the society and
everyone gets the merit they deserve. According to me, justice is an universal and absolute concept.
Laws, principles, rules, religion are just some ways of explaining the concept, with results that
sometimes go against the entire concept of what true justice is. Justice is also derived when everyone
in the society has a mutual agreement over equality and the absence of bias. John Rawls once
remarked, Justice is the first virtue of social institutions, as truth is of systems of thought. Justice is the
concept of cardinal virtues, of which it is one. The association of justice with fairness is thus

Dinosaurs In Juvenile Persuasive Speech
Vicious Reptile terrorises school
As unusual as it seems, dinosaurs are back, and are back for good. Disaster has struck Brisbane once
again. Investigated by Maya Cumming.
Dinosaurs are reoccurring in Brisbane
Have you ever wondered how the world would be like if dinosaurs came back to life? Or how people
would react? Well, early Monday morning on May 31st 2017, a Tyrannosaurs Rex changed people s
lives by killing 33 innocent people including young school children.
The police claimed responsibility after the dreadful incident at Blossom Hill High School (BHHS).
This is by far the worst terrorist attack Brisbane has experienced.
There were 50 taken to hospital and 55 others treated at the scene.
The traumatised witnesses have stated that the vicious reptile has torn down the entire school, leaving
over millions of pieces scattered across school grounds.
Classrooms left ripped apart and school buses been squashed to the ground.
Some school students at the incident ran for their lives, while others were shocked and whipped out
their phones to record the outrageous event. Tyrannosaurs Rex large, vicious reptile hovered over the
school for over one hour, taking down everything in its sight.
The school yard, which was usually bursting out with happiness and laughter, was now as still as the
night sky.
The unforgettable incident occurred at 10:23 am, when all you could hear were the sounds of
buildings crashing down and screaming
A few minutes later everything was wiped out completely. After the dinosaur roamed around the
school, the police captured the dinosaur for further examination.
Surprisingly, some survived after the awful episode. Andrew Smith, was a survivor who captured this
image of the dinosaur. He and 3 other staff members of (BHHS) survived and witnessed the whole
attack.
(Tyrannosaurs Rex wandering around Blossom Hill High School.)
Andrew 29 said, I heard lots of screaming from across the hall. The next thing I saw is something I
will never forget. It was a dinosaur peering over me. He started to stomp and crush all the buildings
surrounding us
I was honestly so petrified. I yelled at the remanding students to run.
I immediately dialled 000 on my phone. Shortly after they

Sturge-Weber Syndrome Research Paper
Sturge Weber Syndrome Kris Avila 08/30/2015 NURSPT 030L Mrs. B Abstract According to the
Sturge Weber Foundations, Sturge Weber Syndrome can be diagnosed once the baby is born. With the
most obvious characteristics, the baby will have a dark purple birthmark that covers close to half of
his/her face. Another symptom from Sturge Weber Syndrome is that it can cause neurological
deformity. Both of these symptoms are caused by the abnormal blood vessels near the eye and on the
surface of the brain. Studies have shown that this syndrome is not passed from family history, but the
only remedy we can do is to suppress it (Sturge Weber.org). One of the most amazing miracles in life

The only way to cope with the disease is to control it and improving the person s lifestyle. (Moore,
2012). Pinpointing what kind of symptoms and category of Sturge Weber Syndrome the person has, an
MD can figure out what types of remedies are available. There are many different types of
pharmacologic treatments for seizures. Most of the seizures from the disease are located only on one
side of the brain s hemisphere. Some of the medications include Carbamazepine, Phenytoin,
Oxcarbazepine, Lamotrigine, Levetiracetam, Valproic Acid, Zonisamide, Topiramate, Lorazepam,
Phenobarbital, Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Tiagabine, Diazepam, Felbamate, Lacosamide, and
Clonazepam. With the seizures being controlled with medications, it helped prevent future seizures
from 10% to 50%. Besides medications, there are also surgical treatments available as well. Early
surgery for patients with Sturge Weber Syndrome is to improve and prevent developmental delay,
refractory seizures, and hemiparesis. Lobectomy and craniotomy were recommended once being
diagnosed with the disease because doctors have found that early onsets of seizures can lead towards
mental retardatation. A procedure called hemispherectomy is also recommended to be given when a
unilateral epileptogenic region exist. This procedure is also done while the patient is still young. It is
preferable because the epileptogenic region is smaller. Studies have shown

A Reflection On My Values Speech
By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have already accomplished
and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself better for the next big speech as well
as to further improve my public speaking skills. Now that I look back at the recording of my
presentation, I clearly saw strengths that were shown, but there were also weaknesses that I revealed,
diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speech should have gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy s
TED talk called Your body language shapes who you are , I learned more about body language and
what I should ve done when I presented my Values Speech. Throughout my reflection, I will discuss
my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as pacing and eye contact as well as the
limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my sentences, and then I will finish off my
reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I portrayed.
First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech such
as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were seen, the
weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my
presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was
very well executed. I didn t speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good because my
classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that, but I also provided eye
contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not need to read my note cards as
much. Of course, with strengths, there were also weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of
phrases because of my anxiety and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly, leaving a poor
execution. I realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and mess up mid way through, I
would end the sentence with words that wouldn t be as clear. Now knowing my weaknesses and
strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next upcoming speech by practicing my speeches with
more word choices when I say it verbally, allowing myself to become more aware of the variety of

camped at a house in Lakhpat during 1506 1521 AD. In Ancient times, when Lakhpat was part of

Medina in Saudi Arabia. The house in which Gurunanak had stayed has been converted to Gurudwara.
The house has gone through heavy restoration work and now is one of well maintained buildings of
Lakhpat. Nonetheless one can still find the ornate wooden windows, door frames and portions of the
old house amidst the new construction. A UNESCO award for restoration work after the earth quake is
credited to this Gurudwara, which is proudly displayed inside its prayer hall. An interesting part about
this Gurudwara is that the current entrance was earlier the back yard of the house. Many old homes in
India, had an independent structure serving as an entrance and it would stand a few meters away from
the main house. Guests were seated here before being brought inside the main house. This
independent structure can be seen as soon as you enter the Gurudwara just adjacent to the prayer hall

Jonah
Jonah is one of the most interesting stories in the Old Testament. In this paper, I will summarize the
story of Jonah, and determine if this story is literal or not. Towards the end of this paper, I will give
my final thoughts about Jonah. According to chapter one, the Lord spoke to Jonah and instructed him
to preach in the city of Nineveh. Jonah did not want to go Nineveh so he decided that he wanted to run
away from God. While Jonah was on his way to Tarshish, God sent a great wind on the sea and it
threatened the safety of the passengers on the ship. Out of desperation, the sailors on the ship cried out
to their gods, and they threw the cargo off the ship in an effort to stop the ship from sinking. During all
of this distress, Jonah had gone below the deck, and he fell asleep. When the captain discovered Jonah
below the deck, he criticized Jonah for not calling on his god. In Jonah s response, he stated that the
Lord made the sea and the dry land. Jonah s statement frightened the ship s crew, and they realized
that God created the storm to punish Jonah for disobeying him. The bible tells the readers that Jonah

First of all, Jonah and the Giant Fish is one of the most unbelievable stories in the bible due to the fact
that it is impossible for a man to survive in the belly of fish. The bible is filled with allegories and the
story of Jonah is one of those allegories. Although the story of Jonah is fictional, the meaning of the
story is still relevant, even in this decade. Jonah was a very, judgmental person, and he almost allowed
his judgments to stop him from doing the will of the Lord. There are a lot of people who act like Jonah
and it s actually sad. Religion is supposed to be a good thing, but some people use it to judge others.

The Law And The Judgement Of God
What is the law? Does it provide the necessary soteriological provision for those that uphold it over
the privileges found in faith? The Apostle Paul, who at one time was a staunch supporter of this view
of the law before his conversion now seeks to show the truth of what the Mosaic Law has done and
what its functions are in the age of the Messiah. Paul s argument of justification by faith is stacked
against the legalistic points of the traditions of the Mosaic Law and what it is that provides peace with
God. This paper will look at the components of Paul s view surrounding the law and the judgement of

For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned
under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous
before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the
law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have
the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also
bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when,
according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. (Romans 2:12 16) The
Inclusivity of the Law Paul establishes the view that will included the law and the judgement under it
as an all inclusive understanding. He begins this section with the division of judgement the law itself
has brought: those that sin without the law and those that sin under the law (v. 12). Paul is emphatic to
his readers that those that have sinned without the law will be judged without the law. His reference to
the law is that of the law established under the Mosaic covenant. His early narrative on the condition
of the God s natural revelation to man places those that are not privy to the Mosaic Law under
judgement because what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them
(1:19). Paul specifically calls out that God s

Everyone is fluent in at least one language, but as it continues to become popular, people are learning

company service while abolishing cut rate fares and cost based practices. In addition to these explicit
streamlining actions, Bethune also changed several practices that had significant symbolic value in the
refocusing effort at Continental. For example, surveillance cameras were removed from executive
offices, and the cockpits of planes were scheduled to be cleaned every thirty rather than every ninety
days. Perhaps the most important changes, however, were the actions taken to adjust the human

his mother s death who has been dead for a year at the start of the story. Sheppard hates that Norton is
struggling to deal with his wife s death and he has coped by focusing on his job as a recreational
director. Every Saturday he counsels the youth and there he meets a Rufus Johnson, a teenaged
delinquent, who he decides to take into his own home. The heart of this story is the war that Sheppard
and Rufus Johnson take part in and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They partake in a war revolving around the ideals of Christianity and the existence of God and
morality, however it is entirely filled with hypocrisy. O Conner s belief of a single gesture is proven to
be true when Rufus tears a page of the Bible and eats it, and act that would typically to be considered
sacrilegious, in order to show his faith in God and/or Jesus. O Connor believes that people that are
liberal and atheistic are wrong and egotistical. O Connor also shows that conservatives and people that
are religious can be hypocritical and egotistical. I believe that she thinks that naturally people are
inclined towards religion and that people by nature are hypocrites even if they do not try to

Finding Solace At The Blacklist Essay
I recently told an employee of mine that The Blacklist has been fun to watch through its first two
episodes of its fourth season. I have always been a big fan of The Blacklist, considering it was the first
show I reviewed for SpoilerTV. This may be why I am overly critical of each and every episode,
however, I rarely, if ever, belittle the show (even during what I thought was an unsatisfactory and
imperfect season three). I find solace in ratings, for some reason, which is why I tend to list them in
the beginning of my reviews. I find they are an important indicator (although the current system is a
tad outdated) of a show s progress. With that in mind, The Blacklist has not done so well in the ratings
department since its imaginative and incredible freshman season. However, the ratings are not so bad
as to worry us about its future on our television screens. The latest chapters, Esteban and Mato , have
had modest viewership. The premiere garnering an ok 6.4 million viewers with Mato losing some of
them and getting 5.99 million. I mention all of this because The Blacklist is one of my favorite shows
on television at the moment and should have much more viewers than they currently have. I also
mention this because I think this Season 4, although only two episodes in, seems to be heading back to
its Season 1 roots, which made me say out loud to my employee that I could sum up this season so far
with one word fun . The first two episodes this season have

Discuss Smith s Ideas On The Division Of Labour
Explain and Evaluate Smith s Ideas on the Division of Labour:
A core part of dominant ideology is the split between state and market is this valid? Is this true?
One of Adam Smith s main focuses was the problem of the relationship between money and the state.
Adam Smith can be seen as pioneering in questioning the role of the state, as he was seemingly the
first to propose a systematic model of the economy that was independent of the state. He attempts to
explain how society should organise economics from the perspective of what is naturally occurring. In
doing this he finds that what should be and what can be are profoundly interlinked. This revolutionary
thinking went against mercantilism, which was the dominant approach of the time period.
Mercantilism can be understood as an economic model that was characterized by government
intervention. Mercantilism was an alliance between merchants and the state that was premised on
increasing the power and wealth of the state through growing certain sections of the economy. It was
formed by the concerns of the time, such as a need to maintain new and expensive militaries, the rise
of the nation state, and crises and shortages of money.
Adam Smith s wrote The Wealth of Nations (1776) primarily as an attack on the economic
mercantilist system of the day. Smith aimed to demolish the mercantilist beliefs that money was an
end, and that the accumulation of wealth could be identified with the accumulation of money, and to
understand

The majority of modern pornography is not art, and by...
The majority of modern pornography is not art, and by using a selective definition of Leo Tolstoy s
version of art, and John Dewey s theory of art as experience, we can determine that pornography is
nothing more than shallow entertainment that exacerbates social inequalities of society s gender roles.
Despite this, pornography has the potential to become art, and should therefore not be censored. It is
important to define pornography, as well as Tolstoy and Dewey s definitions of art, in order to set the
groundwork for my argument. To begin, in this paper, the term pornography refers to anything that, is
sexually explicit material that is primarily designed to produce sexual arousal in viewers. Furthermore,
pornography comes in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John Dewey s definition of art is different from Tolstoy s in that Dewey believed in the importance of
experience as art, and using one s imagination and expression to contribute to that experience. When
we encounter true art, we are not concerned with the connection of one incident with what went before
and what comes after. There is no interest that controls attentive rejection or selection of what shall be
organized into the developing experience. Dewey thought that experience has external factors that
changed and also lead through a beginning and end. Imagination must also be used while one engages
art and it is defined as the capacity to work a vague idea and emotion over into terms of some definite
medium. Both artist and audience must consciously activate the imagination when observing art. To
activate one s imagination is to bring forth a past experience from one s mind, and reflect on its
relevancy. Dewey further believes in the importance of the role of expression when creating art. By
definition expression is, the clarification of turbid emotions; our appetites know themselves when they
are reflected in the mirror of art, and as they know themselves are transfigured. Expression is
essentially a hybrid of revised emotion combined with a past experience. When one successfully
creates this hybrid, expression is created and the emotion becomes, independent of the artist s
expressing something through an object.

Purposes of Subscription Library
Following the years of revolution, the eighteenth century was relatively stable and peaceful age.
General improvement of life and urbanisation led to increase in the amount of spare time and money.
The commercialisation of the leisure also made recreational activity more affordable, especially for
the new middle class constituted by professionals. Their new vulnerable status in the society led them
to seek their own culture, such as participation to society activities and enrolment to the subscription
library. Subscription Library was first established in Liverpool in 1758, and it spread across Britain,
growing the number of subscribers along the way. It was essentially a private library, requiring a
payment of a guinea for entry and another ten shillings or so for the annual subscription fee. In turn,
the members were allowed access to the permanent collection of the books. In this essay, I would like
to discuss the possible purposes of the subscription library in the eighteenth century, by studying the
library catalogues and regulations. Firstly the library s role in the associationalism and the polite
culture would be considered. Then I would like to discuss how the library served as a place of forming
a uniformed society, offering useful knowledge and promoting equality. Lastly, its exclusiveness
would be studied. The purpose of the subscription library could be best explained as a part of the
associationalism culture and the desire for the polite society.

Global Environmental Problems
Global environmental problems have taken a turn for the worst in recent years. For water pollution,
carbon emissions, and hurricanes have been at their highest peak in 2017. These issues have only
begun to get worse due to power plants, burning of fossil fuels, and several other environmentally
hazardous factories. In just 2017, six major hurricanes have occurred due to a combination of climate
change, warming of the oceans, air and water pollution, overpopulation, and several other
environmental polluters. Countries, including the United States of America, are drastically being
affected by these events, some more than others. Global environmental problems have increased over
the years and will continue to grow worse if actions are not taken to change this pattern. If the
population continues to grow exponentially, like it is now, Homo sapiens will drastically feel the
effects of global environmental changes including a lack of water, polluted waters and air, and a
drastically lower life expectancy. According to the article, Food by World Wildlife 7.3 billion people
live on this Earth and all together we consume 1.6 times what Earth s natural resources can offer us
(1). With this statistic alone, it is prevalent that if we continue to consume more than what Earth can
offer us, we will run out of natural resources. Running out of natural resources such as food will
drastically affect the Homo sapiens race as well as all life forms on Earth. Environmental storms will

The War Between America And America
During the time from 1800 1900 America had gone through a series of some tough growing pains. It
was recovering from its first war with Britain and would not be its last battle, for this newly formed
country. The over whelming onslaught of war was just the start of this small country s birth. Within
the 1800 s there were 35 wars in America s history and it was needing to prove its worth by each one.
You will see reasons why a young country had to fight to save itself, what effects these battles had on
America, and the battles that scared America the worst.
America was a young country that had just beaten the British nation, that same power that gave them
the opportunity to become America. Recovering from its wounds with the mother land, America had
to tighten the reigns as the battles with other nations were about to start. America was being groomed
by its founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson to become something greater as he said in a letter to
John Adams, to establish each ward with reading, writing, and arithmetic. (1) Jefferson portraying to
Adams that he wanted this country built on free thinkers and not slaves to the crown. The thought that
would linger in every American during the 1800 s was that they had to fight for the freedom they had
earned. Unlike the French that fought and lost its revolution and went back to a monarchy. (2) With
this great nation it knew it needed great warriors, and the call to arms would be answered by the
United States Marine Corps.

The Ethics Of Cloning Extinct Animals
In 1996, science made a breakthrough that changed the idea of cloning. The lamb Dolly was the first
successfully cloned mammal. After this people began to think that scientists would try cloning
humans. The technology and the funds are not there for those advances. Also, in some countries it is
not legal to do so. The next step was to clone extinct animals. This is also known as de extinction.
When evaluating the dilemmas that can come with cloning extinct animals, the person must look at the
purpose of the animal and what it could do today for us, the reason as to why it had became extinct
and how to prevent that again, and lastly the concept that if we had the animals, and we put them back,
and the world wasn t ready.
After Dolly s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many animals that have went extinct due to humans in some way, shape, or form. If it is due
to our overpopulation and moving into new areas taking over other habitats, which could also be
deforestation or if it is due to poaching. For example, the West African Black Rhino was officially
announced as extinct as of last year, 2016. Others like the passenger pigeon, Chinese river dolphin,
wooly mammoth, and Tasmanian tiger are on the list of interest to begin working with their DNA.
Scientist would like to bring species back like these and do not plan to waste any time on others like
the T rex who has been gone for about 65 million years. First, the T rex is not needed in our present
ecosystem. Secondly, we do not have a living species that could lay an egg at that size. Their plan is to
not recreated Jurassic Park, the movie but to revive the species we have harm to possibly help the
environment. Many of the species that have already become extinct have made impacts on our living
species to the point that they are declining. The ecosystems have changed and our existing species are
struggling to evolve. The wooly mammoth was a major contributor to their ecosystem in the Arctic.
When mammoths no longer existed, the area went from grasslands to the cold tundra it is today. The
limitations with this would be funding and would they

The Frames And Their Goals And Beliefs Into Collective Action
Frames Literature
Within social movement literature, frames play a major role in impacting how movement actors
translate their goals and beliefs into collective action. Specifically, frames shape the parameters of
action and the strategic choices underlying these actions. Additionally, framing processes have taken
center stage in an attempt to understand the emergence and development of social change efforts
(Croteau Hicks, 2003: 252). For sociologists, frames act as schemata of interpretation which render
things or situations meaningful (Goffman, 1974: 21). Political scientists attribute this concept to
collective action, where frames simplify and condense aspects of the world out there, with the end
intention of mobilizing potential adherents and constituents (Benford Snow, 1988: 198). In its simplest
form, movements may try to remake the world in their own image (Clemens in McAdam et al, 1996:
213). Therefore, to get supporters involved in collective action, organizers must shape their frames in
an attractive manner. To generate collective action frames, movement organizers participate in what
scholars call frame articulation (Benford Snow, 2000: 623). Frame articulation, according to Benford
and Snow, involves the connection and alignment of events and experiences so that they hang together
in a relatively unified and compelling fashion (2000: 623). Benford and Snow further argue: what
gives the resultant collective action frames its novelty is not

  • 2. Reading Of An Extract From The Cuckoo Clock Close Reading of an Extract From The Cuckoo Clock Mrs. Molesworth s The Cuckoo Clock was originally published in 1877. During this point in history, children s literature typically focused on the instruction of children. Children were seen as blank slates upon which adults carved moral values. Many authors, Mrs. Molesworth s included, incorporated these moral values into easy to digest and entertaining narratives. This extract from The Cuckoo Clock, titled Obeying Orders , combines didacticism with elements of fantasy that capture the imaginations of its intended child audience. While the tale centers around a magical cuckoo clock, it never fails especially with the narrator s assistance to remind children of the lessons they must learn in order to grow into proper adults. The narrator in The Cuckoo Clock speaks in a loving, yet educative manner, like an aunty imparting words of wisdom to her young nieces and nephews. On page 45, when the narrator first directly enters the narrative, she says, For fairies, you know, children, however charming, are sometimes rather queer to have to do with. This sentence alone suggests many things about the narrator. When she addresses her intended audience, children, directly, she encourages them to participate in the story being told; one can imagine a group of children nodding their heads along in agreement. She also appeals to their intelligence by implying that they are already familiar with the information she is about to impart, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Physics Personal Statement For years I have shown a passion for physics and I aspire to read it at a deeper level because of its many phenomena and applications, and the need for skilled physicists in the world, as without them, civilisation would struggle to thrive. The thought process and unique perceptions that physicists have are key in driving businesses and other innovations. Furthermore, society is hugely reliant on technology, resulting in physicists becoming increasingly important to both maintaining and creating new technological ideas. For example my work experience at Sky allowed me to see how the approach that the physicists there took enabled them to be very successful in their line of work. More importantly however, the beauty of physics is found on an intrinsic level which allows us to understand the universe we live in. For thousands of years, religious beliefs dominated explanations for important ideas such as how the universe was created, the afterlife, and of course the question of a deity. Religion shaped society for many years, but the intervention of physics has bravely challenged these once readily accepted views, creating a society that consists of ... Despite my enjoyment of mathematics and the satisfaction I get from solving problems, I always asked myself how these laws were helpful in the world and I found more answers when I turned to physics and saw my mathematical skills being used to practical effect. I realised just how immersed I was becoming in physics when whilst enjoying theme park rides, I started to examine the physics behind the rides and mentally solved calculations to figure out the force being used to meet the velocities in the record times they claimed. From this point I dived into physics and knew I wanted to study it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Age Related Dysphonia Case Study The aging process impacts the vocal mechanism as it does any other system of the body. In one of the few studies that reviewed vocal disorders in the geriatric population, the incidence of vocal disorders in people 65 years or older was between 12% and 35%. (Davids, Klein, Johns, 2012). Of that population, 25% had vocal fold atrophy as the cause of their disorder. (Davids, et al., 2012). A 2006 study conducted on 100 assisted living residents found the incidence of age related dysphonia to be around 20% (Golub, Chen, Otto, Hapner, Johns, 2006). It further found that the impact of this disorder had a percieved negative impact on quality of life in 13% of the test poplutation (Golub et al., 2006). An inability, or a limited ability to ... • 6. Father And Mother In Aria Beth Sloss s North (P1) In Aria Beth Sloss short story, North, the narrative is told from the perspective of a child as he/she talks about his/her parents. The narrator opens the piece by telling the reader that his/her father, Thomas, was an explorer who left for an expedition and was never heard from again (Sloss 2). The narrative then continues into a description of the relationship between the father and mother. The mother, Mary, was considered a wild woman (Sloss 5) growing up. Her family had concerns that she was unsuitable for any man. Upon meeting each other, the narrator s mother and father found common ground in that they both loved adventure and had a habit of disappearing (Sloss 5). As the story progresses into the couple s married life, the father is described to be a man in love (Sloss 7) with the wilderness like a schoolboy (Sloss 7). He cannot be home from expeditions long without getting restless. As days pass, the father spends his time planning his next adventure, a hot air balloon ride to the Arctic, something that he claims will write his name beside Darwin s in the history books (Sloss 13). The father does not tell Mary of his plans and she does not tell him of the loneliness that has struck her sudden as a storm (Sloss 13) from his lack of presence. One day though, Mary and Thomas have sex and Mary feels as though something dangerous is running through her (Sloss 21). • 7. Sub-urbanization in America Essay Sub urbanization in America AHousing is an outward expression of the inner human nature; no society can be understood apart from the residences of its members.@ That is a quote from the suburban historian Kenneth T. Jackson, from his magnificent piece on suburbanization Crabgrass Frontier. Suburbanization has been probably the most significant factor of change in U.S. cities over the last 50 years, and began 150 years ago. It represents Aa reliance upon the private automobile, upward mobility, the separation of the family into nuclear units, the widening division between work and leisure, and a tendency toward racial and economic exclusiveness.@ Overall it may represent the change in attitude of the American people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such an economic shift is identified as being a result of Awhite flight@, where the urban whites fled to the suburbs after WWII, with the immigrants, blacks, and rural dwellers moving in. The economy switched from an industrial economy to a post industrial or service economy, with the older factories being replaced by smaller factories (computers, airplanes, appliances), requiring higher skilled workers. In effect these new factories were located outside the city in the suburbs. The central city would be left with nothing, and virtually no opportunities of any magnitude. Detroit is a city that I believe can be identified as the city which went through the greatest amount of change, being heavily relied on one industry. During the first half of the twentieth century, Detroit was probably the most economically booming city in the United States. Since about 1950, Detroit has gone from Aarsenal of democracy@, having one of the fastest growing populations and was home to the highest paid working class workers as well, to losing nearly 1 million people. Many jobs were also lost with many business leaving the city of today empty and sometimes complete city blocks left completely empty. Detroit has also been home to a host of infrastructure woes, as can be reflected in many other cities in the Industrial Belt of the northeast with decaying roads, sewers, and other physical features. • 9. I 35 W Bridge Failure And Reconstruction I 35 W Bridge Failure and Reconstruction Introduction: The I 35W Mississippi river bridge also known as Bridge 9340 officially was an eight lane, steel truss arch bridge which carried the Interstate 35W across the Mississippi river connected the downtown east and Marcy Holmes. Its construction began in the year 1964, was finally opened in 1967. It connected the northeast of Metrodome on its south end and the University of Minnesota on the North end. The bridge was the boundary of Mississippi Mile downtown riverfront parkland. The north foundation of the bridge was near the hydroelectric plant built in 1988. The south abutment was in an area polluted by the coal gas processing plant. There weren t any mentions of this in the failure investigations. The bridge was a continuous truss bridge that had a total span of 1,907 ft. It was an 8 lane bridge having a width of 113.3ft. and was 115 ft. high. It was designed by Sverdrup Parcel to 1961 AASHO (American Association Of State Highway Officials) standard specifications. The construction contract worth more than US $5.2 million at the time, went to Hurcon Inc. and Industrial Construction Company, which built the steel trusses and deck. • 10. The Importance Of A Democratic Country Public Opinion 1. Introduction For a democratic country public opinion is the most important determinant to establish a government and voting is the process through which people display their opinion and help to setup a democratic government. So the voting system should be reliable, accurate and it must be transparent. In voting systems, three important requirements are identified: Universal verifiability: After the election any party, including a passive observer, can convince himself that the election was fair in the sense that the published final tally is computed correctly from ballots that were correctly cast. Privacy: All individual votes will be kept secret from any (reasonably sized) coalition of parties. Robustness: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They then publicly set the 4 totals to zero by pressing the CLEAR button, after which the control unit display shows that a total of zero votes have been cast. Workers can check this count at any time by pressing the TOTAL button. When a voter arrives, workers verify his or her identity and record the voter s presence by obtaining a signature or thumb print. Next, a poll worker presses the BALLOT button on the control unit to allow one vote. This causes a green READY light to glow on the ballot unit. The voter enters the polling booth and presses the button for the candidate of his or her choice. A red light next to the candidate button glows, the ready light turns off, and the control unit emits a loud beep to indicate that the vote has been cast. The red light then turns off automatically. This process repeats for each voter. At the end of the poll, the presiding officer removes a plastic cap on the control unit and presses the CLOSE button, which prevents the EVM from accepting further votes. The ballot unit is disconnected and the control unit is placed in storage until the public count, which may occur weeks later. On the counting day, the control units are delivered to a counting center. In public view, an election official breaks a seal on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Sororities Research Paper Sorority life is more than the parties, frat boys and booze. It s about being apart of a community and the traditions and rituals that have been around of hundreds of years. The average young woman should consider joining a sorority because of what they stand for and the benefits that it can bring you. Although sororities can by pricey and seem to have a bad reputation in the media, they give young women values to live by, networking opportunities for the work force and a long lasting sisterhood. Movies and the social media do not give sororities justice. They showcase them as a bunch of mean, ditsy girls who want to party and get their M.R.S. degree but I can personally say that sororities are much more than the stereotype that they are given by society and portrayed in the media. With technology is providing many advantages, but also it has some disadvantages it has on children and adults. There is little room for people that wish to live without technology, moreover than living the way they did in the old days. Technology has its advantages, it s has changed the way people have communicated by email, social media, the way traveling has improved. Have you ever heard the saying Children are born with a cell phone in their hands? In today society, children may not be born with technology in their hands, but they are introduced to it sometimes even before they can even walk. Technology is so advanced than what it used to be, children as young as babies can use it and learn from it. I am for my child using technology, to help learn and to expand her mind. Everything that children see and interact with is involved with technology, for example: cellphones, tablets, video games, and many other things. In elementary school the students are mandatory to learn how to use the computers. This allows the students to learn how to use the computer appropriately. Learning tools for school is at the student figure tips. It s important for children to learn how to research topics, by using the web search. The Terminator By James Cameron The Terminator was written by James Cameron and came out in 1984.1 It tells of a post apocalyptic world dominated by a war between humans and artificially intelligent robots, called terminators. The movie was produced at the beginning of the Digital Age, and computer development and use was beginning to increase. Computer companies like Apple and Microsoft had recently been founded and some of the first personal computers were being created. Many wondered if society was becoming too dependent of technology . In addition to computers, all forms of technology were rapidly improving during this time period. The Terminator predicts that the relationship between man and computer turns bad when the computer is given too much power. Ultimately, mankind creates its own downfall. Furthermore, the terminator is seen as superior to the human characters in the movie. The Terminator has no feelings of pain, anger, remorse, or any other kind of emotions. It seems to be a flawless killer, unmatched by its weak creators. The Terminator embodies people s fears of the advancement of technology and its impact on society. The Terminator takes place over the course of a week in the 1980s in an unknown town. The movie is about a robot (a terminator ) that goes back in time to kill a woman named Sarah Connor and a man named Kyle Reese who tries to save her. During the play it appeared to me that the actors Ken Griggs and Jessica Osnoe did not look the role they were playing as George and Mary. As through casting an acting crew I felt that the look and age of the actor should fit the role he or she is playing. However, the role of Clarence played by James Dean was portrayed sufficiency. James voice, costume and personality as the character Clarence in my opinion sold the show. Throughout the show, there were various transitions from scene to scene. The play writers I though did a fantastic job with this as I never lost sight of what was going on in the. Through transitions I feel that it is easy for a person to lose sight of meaning of the scene though the transition. Losing sight of what was occurring never happened to me as I followed along well. Analysis of Act Three Scene Five of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet is a dramatic tragedy, and was first performed in 1595. The novel is about two young lovers, Romeo Juliet and the struggle with their relationship. Romeo and Juliet are from opposing families, the Montagues and the Capulets. The conflict between their two families causes problems for their love of one another. Shakespeare s main themes throughout the play are of love, conflict and of youth versus age. The scene that we are analysing, Act 3 Scene 5 is one of the most important scenes in the novel. This is mainly because; the character of Juliet is developed tremendously. Juliet then says, He shall not make me a joyful bride, she says this but does not give a reason why, even though the audience know it is because she is deeply in love with Romeo and not Paris. Juliet then goes on to say I will not marry yet, and when I do, I swear It shall be Romeo, Lady Capulet does not know that Juliet is already married to Romeo but the audience do know. This makes the audience aware of the relationship between Juliet and her mother, they are not close at all and Juliet does not think twice about lying to her. Also, when Lord Capulet is shouting at Juliet that she must marry Paris on Thursday, the nurse says God in heaven bless her. The nurse is telling Lord Capulet to stop shouting at Juliet, just because she does not want to marry yet. She says this even though she knows Juliet does not want to marry Paris because she is already married to Romeo. Lord Capulet does not know this. The effect of dramatic irony is that one character does not know what is going on while the audience do. This makes the audience more aware of what is going on in the scene. It also shows the gaps in people s relationships, such as Juliet and her mother. Shakespeare s uses of language are very important throughout Act 3 Scene 5. Some historians argue that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War, whereas others argue that slavery may have been a reason, but not the primary cause of the Civil War. They argued that the main reason of the Civil War was State s rights were being jeopardized, which led to the State s seceding from the Union. They claimed state s rights gave the power to decide if slavery was legal or not to state governments and not the Federal government. The issue was not slavery, but who decided whether slavery was acceptable, local institutions or a distant central government power. The war was indeed about protecting the institution of slavery, but only as a specific case of a state s right to declare a federal law null and void. Though the film was quite graphic, explicit nature seemed necessary to prove how racial brutality towards the black community really did exist. I enjoyed the whole idea of a narrow minded white man making the transition from a life of socially superior racial prejudice to become a devoted supporter of black rights. The nature of justice as both a moral virtue of character and a desirable quality of political society, as well as how it applies to ethical and social decision making were the most important topics that were studied by the philosophers. First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was very well executed. The essay, America s True History of Religious Tolerance, written by Kenneth Davis, made me realize how non free America actually is towards religion and how people choose to practice it. • 39. Finding Solace At The Blacklist Essay I recently told an employee of mine that The Blacklist has been fun to watch through its first two episodes of its fourth season. I have always been a big fan of The Blacklist, considering it was the first show I reviewed for SpoilerTV. This may be why I am overly critical of each and every episode, however, I rarely, if ever, belittle the show (even during what I thought was an unsatisfactory and imperfect season three). I find solace in ratings, for some reason, which is why I tend to list them in the beginning of my reviews. I find they are an important indicator (although the current system is a tad outdated) of a show s progress. With that in mind, The Blacklist has not done so well in the ratings department since its imaginative and incredible freshman season. However, the ratings are not so bad as to worry us about its future on our television screens. The latest chapters, Esteban and Mato , have had modest viewership. The premiere garnering an ok 6.4 million viewers with Mato losing some of them and getting 5.99 million. I mention all of this because The Blacklist is one of my favorite shows on television at the moment and should have much more viewers than they currently have. I also mention this because I think this Season 4, although only two episodes in, seems to be heading back to its Season 1 roots, which made me say out loud to my employee that I could sum up this season so far with one word fun . The first two episodes this season have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Discuss Smith s Ideas On The Division Of Labour Explain and Evaluate Smith s Ideas on the Division of Labour: A core part of dominant ideology is the split between state and market is this valid? Is this true? One of Adam Smith s main focuses was the problem of the relationship between money and the state. Adam Smith can be seen as pioneering in questioning the role of the state, as he was seemingly the first to propose a systematic model of the economy that was independent of the state. He attempts to explain how society should organise economics from the perspective of what is naturally occurring. In doing this he finds that what should be and what can be are profoundly interlinked. This revolutionary thinking went against mercantilism, which was the dominant approach of the time period. Mercantilism can be understood as an economic model that was characterized by government intervention. Mercantilism was an alliance between merchants and the state that was premised on increasing the power and wealth of the state through growing certain sections of the economy. It was formed by the concerns of the time, such as a need to maintain new and expensive militaries, the rise of the nation state, and crises and shortages of money. Adam Smith s wrote The Wealth of Nations (1776) primarily as an attack on the economic mercantilist system of the day. Smith aimed to demolish the mercantilist beliefs that money was an end, and that the accumulation of wealth could be identified with the accumulation of money, and to understand ... • 41. The majority of modern pornography is not art, and by... The majority of modern pornography is not art, and by using a selective definition of Leo Tolstoy s version of art, and John Dewey s theory of art as experience, we can determine that pornography is nothing more than shallow entertainment that exacerbates social inequalities of society s gender roles. Despite this, pornography has the potential to become art, and should therefore not be censored. It is important to define pornography, as well as Tolstoy and Dewey s definitions of art, in order to set the groundwork for my argument. To begin, in this paper, the term pornography refers to anything that, is sexually explicit material that is primarily designed to produce sexual arousal in viewers. Furthermore, pornography comes in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Dewey s definition of art is different from Tolstoy s in that Dewey believed in the importance of experience as art, and using one s imagination and expression to contribute to that experience. When we encounter true art, we are not concerned with the connection of one incident with what went before and what comes after. There is no interest that controls attentive rejection or selection of what shall be organized into the developing experience. Dewey thought that experience has external factors that changed and also lead through a beginning and end. Imagination must also be used while one engages art and it is defined as the capacity to work a vague idea and emotion over into terms of some definite medium. Both artist and audience must consciously activate the imagination when observing art. To activate one s imagination is to bring forth a past experience from one s mind, and reflect on its relevancy. Dewey further believes in the importance of the role of expression when creating art. By definition expression is, the clarification of turbid emotions; our appetites know themselves when they are reflected in the mirror of art, and as they know themselves are transfigured. Expression is essentially a hybrid of revised emotion combined with a past experience. When one successfully creates this hybrid, expression is created and the emotion becomes, independent of the artist s expressing something through an object. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Purposes of Subscription Library Following the years of revolution, the eighteenth century was relatively stable and peaceful age. General improvement of life and urbanisation led to increase in the amount of spare time and money. The commercialisation of the leisure also made recreational activity more affordable, especially for the new middle class constituted by professionals. Their new vulnerable status in the society led them to seek their own culture, such as participation to society activities and enrolment to the subscription library. Subscription Library was first established in Liverpool in 1758, and it spread across Britain, growing the number of subscribers along the way. It was essentially a private library, requiring a payment of a guinea for entry and another ten shillings or so for the annual subscription fee. In turn, the members were allowed access to the permanent collection of the books. In this essay, I would like to discuss the possible purposes of the subscription library in the eighteenth century, by studying the library catalogues and regulations. Firstly the library s role in the associationalism and the polite culture would be considered. Then I would like to discuss how the library served as a place of forming a uniformed society, offering useful knowledge and promoting equality. Lastly, its exclusiveness would be studied. The purpose of the subscription library could be best explained as a part of the associationalism culture and the desire for the polite society. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For water pollution, carbon emissions, and hurricanes have been at their highest peak in 2017. These issues have only begun to get worse due to power plants, burning of fossil fuels, and several other environmentally hazardous factories. In just 2017, six major hurricanes have occurred due to a combination of climate change, warming of the oceans, air and water pollution, overpopulation, and several other environmental polluters. Countries, including the United States of America, are drastically being affected by these events, some more than others. Global environmental problems have increased over the years and will continue to grow worse if actions are not taken to change this pattern. If the population continues to grow exponentially, like it is now, Homo sapiens will drastically feel the effects of global environmental changes including a lack of water, polluted waters and air, and a drastically lower life expectancy. • 44. The War Between America And America During the time from 1800 1900 America had gone through a series of some tough growing pains. It was recovering from its first war with Britain and would not be its last battle, for this newly formed country. The over whelming onslaught of war was just the start of this small country s birth. Within the 1800 s there were 35 wars in America s history and it was needing to prove its worth by each one. You will see reasons why a young country had to fight to save itself, what effects these battles had on America, and the battles that scared America the worst. America was a young country that had just beaten the British nation, that same power that gave them the opportunity to become America. Recovering from its wounds with the mother land, America had to tighten the reigns as the battles with other nations were about to start. America was being groomed by its founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson to become something greater as he said in a letter to John Adams, to establish each ward with reading, writing, and arithmetic. (1) Jefferson portraying to Adams that he wanted this country built on free thinkers and not slaves to the crown. The thought that would linger in every American during the 1800 s was that they had to fight for the freedom they had earned. Unlike the French that fought and lost its revolution and went back to a monarchy. (2) With this great nation it knew it needed great warriors, and the call to arms would be answered by the United States Marine Corps. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After this people began to think that scientists would try cloning humans. The technology and the funds are not there for those advances. Also, in some countries it is not legal to do so. The next step was to clone extinct animals. This is also known as de extinction. When evaluating the dilemmas that can come with cloning extinct animals, the person must look at the purpose of the animal and what it could do today for us, the reason as to why it had became extinct and how to prevent that again, and lastly the concept that if we had the animals, and we put them back, and the world wasn t ready. Their plan is to not recreated Jurassic Park, the movie but to revive the species we have harm to possibly help the environment. Many of the species that have already become extinct have made impacts on our living species to the point that they are declining. • 46. The Frames And Their Goals And Beliefs Into Collective Action Frames Literature Within social movement literature, frames play a major role in impacting how movement actors translate their goals and beliefs into collective action. Specifically, frames shape the parameters of action and the strategic choices underlying these actions. Additionally, framing processes have taken center stage in an attempt to understand the emergence and development of social change efforts (Croteau Hicks, 2003: 252). For sociologists, frames act as schemata of interpretation which render things or situations meaningful (Goffman, 1974: 21). Political scientists attribute this concept to collective action, where frames simplify and condense aspects of the world out there, with the end intention of mobilizing potential adherents and constituents (Benford Snow, 1988: 198). In its simplest form, movements may try to remake the world in their own image (Clemens in McAdam et al, 1996: 213). Therefore, to get supporters involved in collective action, organizers must shape their frames in an attractive manner. To generate collective action frames, movement organizers participate in what scholars call frame articulation (Benford Snow, 2000: 623). Frame articulation, according to Benford and Snow, involves the connection and alignment of events and experiences so that they hang together in a relatively unified and compelling fashion (2000: 623). Benford and Snow further argue: what gives the resultant collective action frames its novelty is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
