The gingiva is covered by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium that shows projections called rete pegs into the underlying connective tissue. The epithelium has 4 layers - the stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale. In addition to epithelial cells, the gingiva contains melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells. The connective tissue underneath contains collagen fibers, predominantly type VII, elastin fibers made of elastin and fibrillin, and oxytalin fibers that resemble immature elastic fibers.
