Wisconsin-Oshkosh Personal Statement
I have attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh for the last two years. I will be entering my
junior year pursuing a Bachelor Degree of Science with a major in Environmental Studies. My career
interests entail green energy and natural resource management. I was a young child when I started
attending a summer camp program that emphasized nature and environmental conservation ever since
I have made outdoor activities into hobbies and continued interest in environmental sustainability. The
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh focuses on sustainability through green building, alternative and
solar energy, and curbing pollution.
In high school, my favorite classes involved science. I was enrolled in the International Baccalaureate

This will be my greatest achievement. I have maintained the status of honors or dean s list every
semester since enrolling in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I carry a 3.7 GPA and participate in
various clubs. This past spring, I participated in events through Titan Volunteer. Our club made dog
toys for the humane society, helped install fire alarms with the American Red Cross, and even
chaperoned at the local high school dance. I also assist with campus clean up after major social events.
In addition to volunteering, I am an Odyssey Leader; this involves supporting freshmen in their
transition to college life and provides a fellow student as resource for questions and information
regarding campus. I am vice president of a new campus organization focusing on herbal health
remedies and green alternatives for household consumption. In addition to clubs, I plan to participate
in this fall s season for the women s rugby. Aside from balancing school work and extracurricular
activities, I have worked at Georgia Pacific as a student packager and forklift driver the past two
years. This job allowed me to save money for a two credit biology course to the Florida Everglades.
We created individual field journals full of different species and images. It was the trip of a life time. I
hope to travel more throughout my college career; it is vital to education, especially as an

Genetic Expression In Gene Expression
In gene expression DNA, the blueprint of life is transcribed into RNA, a nucleic acid that acts as a
messenger carrying instructions that control the synthesis of proteins. Gene expression is vital to
determining cell functions and exactly how much protein should be produced by the cell. The process
in which the end proteins are modified can also be manipulated by researchers. The types of cells
which are typically handled in laboratories include prokaryotes. Escherichia coli is a bacteria found in
the human digestive system, preventing other pathogens from residing. Certain E. coli strains can be
pathogenic and can lead to food poisoning, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gastrointestinal
infections. Ampicillin is an antibiotic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this study, plasmids with ampicillin resistance (pAMP) known as pUC18, were manipulated
due to their stability in extreme environments. The pUC18 plasmid pAMP gene codes for the
production of beta lactamase, an enzyme utilized in the breakdown of ampicillin. Once E. coli obtains
this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were the second
type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid contains
genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence, a light
emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be analyzed
through the light emissions.
Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the
ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the bacteria
does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the ability to
do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. To neutralize
the negatively charged DNA in E. coli, the use of CaCl2 (sodium chloride), a positively charged
solution, dissociates the calcium from chloride, which enters the cells and alters the charge. This
process is known as electroporation. This causes the bacteria cells to swell and the calcium molecules
help adjust the cell membrane to become

Ritz Carlton Environment Analysis
Environment analysis
The Ritz Carlton Hotel will inevitably have a negative impact on the environment due to its large size,
hence the considerable pollution and the waste which would be produced during its construction and
operation. Green house gas is a pollutant that being continually produced throughout the entire life
cycle of the hotel. Initially, transportation of construction material and construction are both carbon
dioxide high emitting activities. During the operation, the tourism being brought about will also
contribute to the green house emissions significantly. However, on some level, the extensive area of
vegetation covered nearby could compensate for the green house gas being emitted.
Effluent is a typical waste that would be generated. It increases the chance of contamination to the
waters around the RCH, more specifically, the Parramatta River. The effect of effluent becomes even
more profound when the Parramatta River has not reached a swimmable level of cleanliness. Habit
destruction may occur after the completion of the RCH, where the booming development of this
second CBD may cause anthropogenic ecosystem change. For example, effluent emitted by the RCH
which ends up in the river could taint the water with chemical and microbial substances, resulting in
the decrease of aquatic life.
There would be a certain amount of levy to be paid regarding to the waste being generated, in terms of
the green house gas and the landfill. In complying with the laws

Othello Racial Undertone Essay

Racial Undertone s
The study in contrasts between Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s 2001 movie O have
many prevalent differences. Issues of jealousy and racial tensions are still deeply rooted into our
society and can be examined in theO, Othello, and the Elizabethan era where many of Shakespeare s
plays took place. The racial undertone was more prevalent in the movie, although in each
interpretation Othello/Odin was the only black individual in each setting. However the most prevalent
differences between William Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s O are the racial
undertones shown through cinematic techniques and Othello/Odin s self perception.
The director used cinematic techniques and different stereotypes to explore the racial tension between
white and black society. Hugo explains the meaning of the hawk in his soliloquy towards the end of
the movie. He expresses the thought that Odin is a powerful and majestic hawk, this is something that
Hugo desires. Which is controversial because in Othello and O black males usually had aspirations to
be seen as a dove. However the image of a black male does not fit into a white ... Show more content

Othello defends himself, saying My services which I have done the signatory shall out tongue his
complaints. Tis yet to know Which, when i know that boasting is an honor, i shall promulgate, I fetch
my life from men of royal siege (Act 1, Sc 2, Ln 17). This shows that Othello was comfortable with
his past and truly believed that it should speak for itself. He did not allow racial stereotypes to define
himself. Othello was perceived as a warrior and leader, which was not the case in Venice. Therefore
Othello did not perceive himself as a stereotypical black male in Venice. In contrast, Odin was more
cognizant of the racial undertones that fueled his actions and his perception of

Finding Nemo Essay
The movie Finding Nemo, directed by Andrew Stanton and previewed of May 30, 2003, is about a
clownfish, Marlin, who has to raise a disabled son, Nemo, with a short fin that makes it a challenge for
him to not stand out from the others. Nemo then gets captured by a reef diver, and Marlin is on a
mission to get his son back, along with the help of a new friend Dory.
Marlin, our quester upon this movie, has a son who ends up being kidnapped by a human diver, and
taken to an Australian dentist s aquarium in his office. From the moment Nemo was taken from his
father, Marlin was on the hunt to find his son. At the beginning of the journey to find his son, Marlin
runs into someone else who helps a lot along the way, Dory. Marlin is determined to find his son under
any circumstances that he has to go through, from attacked by a friendly non fish eating great white
shark, getting stung by a bloom of jellyfish, being swallowed by a whale, almost being breakfast for
seagulls and pelicans, and many other trials, to keep his promise he told Nemo that he would never let

Nuclear Safety Regulations And Measures
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake large enough to cause the earth axis to shift by several inches (p. 3)
sent a massive tsunami rushing towards a forested stretch of the Japanese coast south of Sendai where
the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power reactors stood vulnerable (p. 4). Over the ensuing weeks, the
world watched in horror as a natural disaster transformed into a man made catastrophe: fail safes
failed, cooling systems shut down, nuclear rods melted, communications broke down, hazardous
radioactive exposures and contamination occurred, and masses of people were displaced. Safety of
nuclear power plants is a very important topic that has significant local and global implication for
environmental health. This book was chosen to help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To summarize, after the earthquake, the initial shutdown of Fukushima s reactors went according to
plan; the real problem was when the second wave of the tsunami struck. A fifty feet high wave easily
surged over the seawall, destroying seawater pumps and drowning the plant s electrical system and
power panels. This rendered the emergency backup generators unusable and lead to a station blackout.
Without any power to run the pumps and valves needed to provide a steady flow of cooling water, the
radioactive fuel would overheat, the remaining water would boil away, and the core would proceed
inexorably toward a meltdown. (p. 12) Serious communication problems between TEPCO [Tokyo
Electric Power Company, operator of the plant] and the multilayered Japanese government and its
huge nuclear bureaucracy hampered recovery efforts in the hours that followed the nuclear crisis. On
paper, all these duties and responsibilities may have seemed clear. In practice, however, the system
proved unworkable. (p. 16) Fukushima nuclear disaster sparked the debate about the safety of nuclear
power in general and the nuclear plant designs in particular such as how to improve on the current
plants safety designs to prevent another Fukushima like scenario from ever happening. The

Magic Realism in Como Agua Para Chocolate
Magic realism
Magic realism (or magical realism) is a literary genre in which magical elements appear in an
otherwise realistic setting. As used today the term is broadly descriptive rather than critically rigorous.
The term was initially used by German art critic Franz Roh to describe painting which demonstrated
an altered reality, but was later used by Venezuelan Arturo Uslar Pietri to describe the work of certain
Latin American writers. The Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier (a friend of Uslar Pietri) used the term lo
real maravilloso (roughly marvelous reality ) in the prologue to his novel The Kingdom of this World
(1949). Carpentier s conception was of a kind of heightened reality in which elements of the
miraculous could appear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is controversy regarding the term magical realism because it is seen as a too limiting term
imposed on a post colonial nation by its previous rulers. Some also feel that what is considered magic
by the outside Anglo American or western critic is not viewed the same way by the native writers.
This way of writing is based on the rational view of reality versus the acceptance of the supernatural
(Moore). Magical realism is usually associated with contemporary Latin American fiction but it is also
seen in the writings of authors from different countries (Lodge 114). The unexplained fantasy in these
works is used to depict historical convulsions and ... wrenching personal upheavals that can not be
otherwise described adequately in a realistic fashion (Lodge 114). One of the best known magical
realism novels is Gabriel Garcia Marquez s One Hundred Years of Solitude. The best known magical
realism short story author however, is Jorge Luis Borges. Although Latin American literature was
predominantly written by males in the past, it is becoming more diverse now with the voices of
females, homosexuals, and Jews.
One such voice is that of Mexican writer Laura Esquivel who wrote Como Agua Para Chocolate. First
published in 1990, this novel has since been translated into thirty languages, won the American
Booksellers Association s ABBY award in 1994, and been made into a movie. The film version, with a

A Research Study On Stem Cell Therapy
Introduction
Stem cells are homogeneous cells found in the human body which have potential to change into, or
differentiate into a range of specific types of cells (Stoppler, 1996). The refurbishment and protection
of many adult tissues are safeguarded by stem cells (SCs) which exist in the top of the cellular sorting
section of these tissues (Beck, 2013). Practical assessments, such as transplantation, in vitro
clonogenic assesses (technique used to study efficacy of exact agents in terms of the proliferation and
endurance of cells) and in vivo lineage tracing, have been undertaken to evaluate the repairing and
differentiation capability of normal SCs (Beck, 2013). Currently, research is on going to resolve
whether stem cell therapy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Minimal research findings and reports have been written on the role of side population (SP) cells in
human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This literature review will evaluate the 2007 research article
on, Identification of Cancer Stem Cell Like Side Population Cells in Human Nasopharyngeal
Carcinoma Cell Line, by Wang, Guo, Chen, Zeng and Lu, and determine whether SP cells in human
NPC are viable as an aid in efficient drugs and therapeutic strategies which target NPC Cancer stem
cells (CSC) (Wang, Guo, Chen, Zeng, Lu, 2007).
Review of Underpinning Science
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) give rise to the movement of cancer from one section of the body to another,
and are located in several tumour varieties. The unique properties of stem cells which make them
different from normal cells are; their unspecialised nature, capability to give rise to specialised cell
types and ability to divide and renew themselves (Bethesda, 2015). These stem cell properties can be
used to classify CSCs, and therefore can enable them to treat NPC. A major result of this manipulation
process is the ability the cell can have to extrude dyes such as Hoechst 33342 through the ATP binding
cassette (which encloses membrane proteins that transfer an extensive array of substrates) (Dean,
2002)(Wu, C., Alman, B. A., 2008). Importantly, SP cells are a source of research as they contain these
stem cell characteristics and are therefore able to exclude the Hoechst 33342 dye. This

Naidenko states that cell phone usage does cause cancer, or at least that more research should be done

studies have shown there are no long term health effects of cell phone usage (Easton, 2010. p. 135

These studies have shown that long term users of cell phones, those who have had a cell phone for
more than ten years, have had increase incidence of developing a glioma, which is a brain tumor that
is usually malignant. This tumor usually develops on the side of the brain that is most commonly used
for cellular conversations. She states that there has been evidence showing a 90% greater occurrence
of developing glioma on the side the cell phone is most commonly used. She also states that there has
been research done to show that acoustic neuroma, a usually benign growth on the nerve that runs
from the inner ear to the brain, increases by 60% in long term cell phone users. Acoustic neuroma can
cause hearing loss, ringing in the ear, and unsteadiness ( Acoustic Neuroma, 2013). The opponent,
Erdreich, states that research has proven that cell phone usage is not dangerous. Erdreich begins her
statement by saying that cell phones use radio waves, similar to television, baby monitors,
microwaves, and of course, the radio. These waves are of lower energy and frequency than the waves
required to produce radiation. The lower frequency radio waves are unable to cause DNA mutation,
which is what causes

book Willy Wonka is highly respected and thought to be a genius by everyone. He is revered, and
nothing but praise seems to be heaped upon him by every character in the story and what seems to put
him apart from everyone is his belief in both ideals. Even though it is not stated in the book there is
clear evidence that Wonka is a very business minded individual and gives the success of his factory
massive importance. This is shown in the way he closed down his factory from the public in order to
safeguard the secrets of his products from spy efforts from his competitors. Another shrewd business
maneuver was putting the golden tickets inside chocolate bars, knowing the tickets would be highly
coveted, he knew that sales for his candy would skyrocket. On the other hand Wonka is very faith
driven as shown by his choosing of Charlie to be his successor. Wonka chooses Charlie for his faith
and willingness to accept the wisdom of others, Charlie obviously not being blinded by his own self
gain. I want a good, sensible, loving child. (151) Charlie also seems to share in Wonka s belief of both
ideals evidenced by his good natured faith that leads him to be chosen as Wonka s successor but also

When a team is formed it focuses on the future and once it succeeds it focuses on the past by Edwin
Lee. AT T is a successful company and the largest long distance carrier in the United States. But by
focusing on their past successes, they failed to look towards the future. On the contrast, Black Decker
looked for solutions that would transform their company to succeed in the future. Comparing these
two companies show how the management teams of an organization can guide a company s destiny.
Can success breed failure? That is the opinion of Edwin Lee. He cited the success of IBM with their
introduction of the IBM PC, followed with a failure, the PC Jr. Apple Inc. was successful with its
Apple II and followed with a failure, Lisa. He is of the opinion that success of a product by a
management team can lead to the failure of the next product.
Can failure breed success? In Edwin Lee s article he examined generals Norman Schwartzkopf and
Colin Powell, whom both served during the Vietnam War. He suggests that experience earned from the
failures of Vietnam, both men the wisdom and knowledge to lead to the success of Desert Storm. But
even with their record success he would not want them to lead another battle. His conclusion is that
they would rely on their past success and would not be good at changing for future circumstances. He
further concludes that executives and

to Tahoe and Reno, much in the same way Bullitt and The Dead Pool showcased the harrowing streets

philosopher Simone de Beauvoir wrote the book, The second Sex, in 1949 to investigate the popular
definitions of femininity. She concluded that those definitions had been used to suppress women
through the ages. For de Beauvoir, the views of individuals are socially and culturally produced.
Femininity is not inherent, it is a construct that has been learned through socialization to keep men
dominant. De Beauvoir argued that women have been historically treated as inferior and secondary to
men for three reasons. She exemplifies that society teaches women, one, to fulfil a male s needs and
therefore exist in relation to men. Two, to follow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

personality form during early childhood years. He outlined a series of psychosexual stages that
children pass through. The stages consist of the oral stage, the anal stage, the phallic stage, the latency
stage, and the genital stage. From birth to approximately 18 months, kids are in the oral stage. They
get most of their pleasure by sucking, biting and chewing. During this stage, kids are still dependent
on mom. Next is the anal stage, kids are in that from 18 months to 3 years old. During the anal stage
children get a sense of control of the environment, as their mothers try to toilet train them. This is
called the anal stage because pleasure comes from their bladder and sphincter muscles. They know
that when they use these muscles, they can control part of their environment and no longer totally be
dependent on mom. During the phallic stage, from 3 to 6 years old, pleasure comes from the genitals.
Freud believed at this stage kids would become sexually attracted to the opposite sex parent. Jealous
and rivalrous of their same sex parent. During the phallic stage for men, they develop castration

Frederick Douglass, An American Slave
Frederick Douglass is well known for many of his literary achievements. He is best known, now, as a
writer. As a writer, Frederick Douglass shined. As a speaker, he was the best. There was no
abolitionist, black or white, that was more for his speaking skills. (McFeely, 206) So impressive were
Frederick Douglass s oratorical and intellectual abilities that opponents refused to believe that he had
been a slave and alleged that he was a impostor brought up on the public by the abolitionists. In reply,
Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845), which he
revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under the title Life and Times Of Frederick
Douglass. (Graves, 52 ) Frederick s oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War time period
literature. Douglass s most significant autobiographical works include: Narrative Of The Life Of
Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And Times Of
Frederick Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and share a similar message, but are

person is free to do as he/she wants but what he/she wants can only be consistent with his own nature.
I propose that free will involves four aspects: Conception, Desire, Choice, and Accomplishment.
Conception leads to desire which leads to choice which leads to accomplishing that choice. Slide 3

Speaker notes: The question concerning a free will shouldn t be whether we have one, it should be
whether such a thing is possible. We must ask ourselves, Free from what? A mind free from all
motivating factors would have nothing to base decisions upon. There is just no such thing as an
uncaused choice. Many people, religious and secular alike, wonder if cause and effect ultimately
means that everything in the universe including human behavior is predestined, bound to happen, or
predetermined. We are not made to do things by cause and effect we are PART of cause and effect we
make ourselves do things. The cause and effect that goes on in our minds is what constitutes self, and
our particular cause effect process is manifestly different from what we normally think of cause and
effect. We remember our past, and direct our actions to bring about specific results to satisfy feelings
of need and desire something random causality cannot do. Slide 6 Is freedom of speech part of free

Bail Support Program Service
Background
The Bail Support Program Service began on the month of January in the year 2001 as the Pilot Bail
Advocacy Program and lead by the Melbourne Magistrates Court and Corrections Victoria. In 2003,
the pilot bail advocacy program grew and the management moved to the Magistrates Court of
Victoria. On December 2004 it was fused with the Court Referral and Evaluation for Drug
Intervention and Treatment Program.

Provide early treatment, including access to drug treatment and rehabilitation programs. Reduce risk
of the client re offending. The Bail support program also aids an accused person that would otherwise
be remanded in custody to be granted bail and to remain on bail to satisfy the conditions of their bail.
A decrease of relevant services to aid youth to gain bail and meet the conditions has been noted as
possibly contributing towards the large number of youth on custodial remand, mainly for the
indigenous community and younger people who reside in more remote and regional areas.
Because of this the provision aid in finishing bail orders can partake a critical role in decreasing rates
of custodial remand. The bail Support programs are mainly aimed at the youth or adults, to distinguish
the different needs of the groups. The jurisdictions youth Justice department or non government
organisations give them. The Bail support program was created from two other bail programs. The
Bail support program main aim is to achieve the successful completion of bail by the accused that
would normally be in custody. Reduce the amount of accused kept in remand because of lack of
treatment, support from the community and lack of accommodation.

Statistical Data Analysis Sample
Statistical data analysis was performed using programs MATLAB R2012b or R2014a and was
conducted at 95% confidence level. Amino acids in the hair protein were determined using the relative
peak areas and the concentrations were determined from a calibration curve from liquid injections of
standard amino acid solutions of GC/MS analysis [8]. Also, ANOVA (one way analysis of variance)
was used to compare the mean concentrations of each amino acid between the case control study
groups. The F test that is used in ANOVA is used to determine the variability between group means is
larger than the variability within groups. It can be concluded that not all the means are equal if the
ratio is very large [5]. Rashaid et al. detected 4 amino acids ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The hair samples were collected by plucking with the root intact and prepped by an optimized
procedure to detect the drug inside the hair shaft and hair root. With MALDI imaging (matrix assisted
laser desorption/ionization) and as well as by strand by strand conventional sectional analysis by LC
MS/MS, revealed a substantial concentration of the drug onto the hair bulbs after ingestion and small
portion appeared into the hair matrix [7]. Technology such as MALDI imaging is a promising tool that
allows direct detection and visualization of drugs inside the hair in forensic cases.
Aside from detecting drugs, hair analysis is used to explore environmental substances found at
hazardous waste sites. On June 12th 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, the Agency for Toxic Substances and
Disease Registry (ATSDR) held a panel of scientific experts to discuss hair analysis from
environmental exposures [6]. The panelist covered wide variety of topic areas such as: analytical
methods, data gaps and research needs, scenarios for which hair analysis may be appropriate; to name
a few. The agency has conducted several hair analyses to assess current exposures, but wants to
determine whether science supports this effort. From this panel, it was concluded that analytical
methods for measuring organic contaminants in human hair are sparse. For most substances measured,
the data is insufficient to predict a health effect from the hair analysis.

Canadian Constitution Essay
The Canadian Constitution
Regarded as the fundamental law of the land, a Constitution is important because it sets forth the
policy declaration and principles of a sovereign state. Aside from that, it accords the government
fundamental powers so that the latter is able to serve and protect the people in the best possible way.
Without the Constitution, a community will fall into anarchy. For the purposes of this paper, the
history of the promulgation of the Canadian Constitution will be discussed. This paper will also assess
the purpose of the said Constitution.

Thus, it authorizes the state to exercise its inherent powers and at the same time, limiting such
exercise. To make it simple, the Constitution creates the systems of government of a certain state. The
Government of Canada (n.d.). mentioned that Canada has three branches of the government: the
executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. In Canada, the Queen exercises the executive power. The
legislative branch is known as the parliament. The parliament is comprised of the Senate and the
House of Commons (Government of Canada, n.d.). This is where bills are passed and subsequently
become laws. The judiciary is comprised of judges. They are burdened with the responsibility of
interpreting the law and making sure that its application conforms to what is set forth in the
Constitution. The fundamental powers granted by the Constitution to the government enable the latter
to intervene and regulate people s liberty and rights. However, this intervention is not absolute
because the Constitution also provides for its limits. There is a need to authorize the government and
limit it at the same time so that its authority and the liberty and exercise of rights of the citizens are
well balanced. Without such balance, anarchy will result. As such, the existence of a Constitution is a
necessity for a government to function properly and for the citizens to live

The Sexual Function Of Laboratory Animals
Abstract
Castration in males may be the result of disease or injury. It is expected that after a castration
procedure, the males will lose sexual function. In this experiment there were seventeen male rats
randomly distributed into three groups; sham group (N = 5), castrated and oil group (N = 4) and
castrated and testosterone group (N = 7). The control group received a sham operation and bi daily
injections of oil to show that it was not a surgical procedure or bi daily injections that caused the
lowered production of testosterone. As expected sexual function was able to be restored in the
castrated males by giving bi daily supplementation of testosterone hormone at the same rate that
testicles would normally produce this hormone. The castrated males that did not receive the
testosterone injections but had received the bi daily injections of oil, did not have successful
restoration of their sexual function. Studying sexual function in laboratory animals is important to be
able to develop ways to supplement hormones in humans and to restore sexual function in those who
have suffered an injury or disease that resulted in a castration procedure. Introduction
Sexual function is dependent on the testosterone levels produced by the interstitial cells of the testicle.
The role of testosterone deficiency in sexual function can be directly linked to diseases of reproductive
organs, injury, certain medications and aging factors. Males and females face this problem more

Understanding Organizational Performance
1.0 Introduction
The focus of this paper will be on investigating an organization, their performance management
system and our recommendations for the future. Historically performance management is defined as
evaluation a firm through metrics such as return on investment and economic value added. Our
analysis will cover not only the financial performance of our chosen firm, but also their values in
behaviors as well as their objectives. Thus, we will ascertain if the current system of performance
management held by the firm is aligned with their objectives and appropriate for their situation.

Tesco Leadership Framework is directed at three key themes to guide behavior in all employees.
These behaviors link to nine critical success factors. The critical success factors can be segmented in
several levels of assessment. This aids management in selecting the staff with the capacity to become
high performing contributors to organisations.
As part of the long term strategy of the corporation, discovering future leaders is of the utmost
importance. TESCO states that they will select leaders wherever they can be found in the organization
for advancement. Promotions are a regular occurrence as over 2,900 managers were promoted
internally in the United Kingdom and literally thousands more in international locations. The Options
programme is a more infrequently used as only 1 in 30 employees are enrolled while basic training
and development happens about every 1 in 10 members of TESCO.
Before beginning their development plan, each member of the TESCO staff selects gaps in their skills
and competencies. The Personal Development Plan has a section where they can select this
information for their line managers to check on in the future.

An Examination Of Archetypes In Watchmen By Moore And Gibbons
Watchmen, the graphic novel written and illustrated by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons seek to
question the superhero archetypes by refusing to provide a clear hero of a hero or a villain. The
philosophy and motivation of the Watchmen characters were purposely created by Moore and Gibbons
to defy the generic archetype of the characters.
Generally, Superhero comics have characters who are shoved into simple categories which does not
allow them to be multifaceted, but in Watchmen Moore and Gibbons steer away from these dangerous
archetypes to provide characters with substance that defies them from being shoved into the simple
archetype. Rorschach is the extreme example of the Vigilante archetype, which means that he is a part

even in Armageddon . Rorschach believes in punishing the action with a punishment that is equally as
immoral as the original action, but Rorschach does not see his retaliation action as a villainous crime
rather an appropriate punishment for the crime. This philosophy can clearly be seen in, figure one,
when Rorschach confronts Moloch in his own apartment, demanding to know answers on the

obvious through the name that Moore and Gibbons gave to The Comedian which literally displays that
life is a joke. The Comedian is captured saying that phrases along the line of the one

in Miss Brill greatly reflects the thoughts and issues that could have been going on in her life. Robert

how she gives great detail into the lives of her characters in this story. Miss Brill has a very boring

One And Done Rule In College Sports Essay
Many people have heard about how some pro athletes have gone straight to the NBA out of high

players. The One and Done rule was supposed to protect unprepared high school players from the
difficult professional transition (Hughes 4). It would help prepare them better by playing one year of
college before going pro. The rule also gives players a chance to change their minds if they feel they
are not ready (McDiffett 12). They thought that the players going straight to the NBA were not very

Migrating from any host technology into college technology can be a very cumbersome process filled

we utilize a disaster recovery type migration or will there be a replication. In addition to this migration
there is also the event of users and how information will be relayed from one location to another
location. When it comes to the migration aspect of the information there are many things that need to
be taken into account such as load balancing redundancy and security controls. The cloud environment

Socrates The Apology Analysis
Socrates died after his attempt to persuade the Athenians by telling the truth during a time when
truthfulness was of little concern. I found unit 3 to be extremely interesting because I never knew
about the trial or death of Socrates. Socrates is known as the father of Greek Philosophy and was put
on trial by citizens of Athens in 399 399 B.C.E. for allegedly corrupting the youth and Impiety. Unit 3
allowed me to examine the trial and learn about the attitudes of people in Athens during this era. The
title of the dialogue I learned about was, The Apology. The Apology was dialogue written by Plato,
one of Socrates student s and admirers, in an attempt to defend Socrates reputation after his death. It is
a description of the speech that Socrates gave when he was on trial for the alleged crimes. Learning

for a person to be criminally indicted these days, a prosecutor, not peers or citizens, must first present

prosecutor can call upon witnesses and provide a probable cause for the indictment to move to a court

Response To Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is an iconic short story which that was published in 1948. The plot
revolves around a small town during the lottery drawing day, which is one of the town s holidays. Due
to a controversial event that took place in the story, Shirley Jackson received a lot of negative
responses to her story and even obtained hate mail from various people, including her parents. This
story is well known for it s unanticipated plot twist that leaves the readers baffled. This story enables
the readers to feel a lot of emotions, especially at the end of the story. As a reader, one emotion I felt
while reading this story was pity towards Tessie. I believe that it was unjustified how her friends and
neighbors turned against her

Bilingual Ed Essays
Bilingual Ed BILINGUAL EDUCATION IS BENEFICIAL TO STUDENTS ABILITIES TO
ASSIMILATE IN THE MAINSTREAM CULTURE
English only sink or swim? Yeah right! Instead of English Only Advocates worrying about bilingual
education cost in our school system, why not take advantage of the skills our ethnic minorities possess
to move our economy forward? They are obviously not thinking clearly, because the benefit of
bilinguals, significantly outweigh the bad. To deny our youth the opportunity for upward mobility and
skill to become more marketable in a worldwide capacity is inhumane. They believe bilinguals
threaten to sap our sense of national identity and divide us along ethnic lines. They also fear that any

They should encourage and support students to the attainment of bilingual or multilingual skills. They
should also consider that students coming from homes where two or more languages are used will face
difficulty in applying while in the school environment. The fact that so few Americans command any
other language than English is largely a result of educational failure and cultural inadequacies. The
American economy will benefit from bilingual education because historically multilingual personnel
are smarter, academic skills are sharper, and their contributions to society are immeasurable. English
is the one language that offers the biggest market, the largest pool of talent, and the greatest
probability of being able to communicate with anyone on the planet. Bilingual education is a tool for
better education that children whose primary language is not English learn more easily. Industry and
Information Technology dance to English lyrics. Students will have no future in the Information
Technology field if they cannot command English as an effective medium of communication.
ìFurthermore, good bilingual programs are about more than learning a language. They should be based
on a respect for diversity and multiculturalism, and parents and community must be essential
partners.î (Rethinking schools Vol 1. 13, #2.). Over 80% of todayís Internet WEB pages, databases and

Suffragism In Iron Jawed Angels
A powerful yet passionate film, Iron Jawed Angels, directed by Katja von Garnier, displays the
hardship that suffragists faced during the years of the Women s Suffrage Movement. Despite a
multitude of people strongly disagreeing with a woman s right to vote in an election, there were
influential and eager individuals such as suffragist leader, Alice Paul and one of her supporters, Lucy
Burns, both of whom had remarkably strong beliefs, that were determined to stand for what they
believe in and obtain the right for all women to vote. As a young adult female living in the 21st
Century, I have the right and am given the option whether to vote or not, so I can not directly relate to
the way that these women suffragist s felt and experienced before

Thucydides Summary
There is little doubt that Thucydides is regarded as one of the best historical writers for coming up
with his book, presenting facts and truth about the war even though he was a general in the Athens
army. By using a unique style of writing, the author was attempting a unique style which involved
being aggressively rational and giving an impersonal analysis of the history of his times being free
from religious influence.
The style used in writing the book is different because the author makes the war to be understood in
respect to human politics and power struggles that were taking place between the two warring
factions; Athens and Sparta. The style of writing is different from how Herodotus had explained the
Greek war against the Persians, putting too much emphasis on the religious side of the war.
Thucydides tries to be different by describing the human factors which made the Athens side to lose
the war. He points that Athens was more concerned about expanding than winning the war and that
most of its generals defected after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author advocated the theme of realism by illustrating how small cities such as Melian would have
benefited had they joined the Athenians. He notes that the cities were destroyed because they were not
realistic about their situation hence they would not have stood against the Athenians.
Throughout the book, Thucydides shows the difference in his works by using economics and politics
as the two main factors which used to determine wars at that time. Such a move was sin contrast with
how historians used to portray wars at that time. Historians usually used gods and their influence to
explain army victories but Thucydides explains that the cities with the most money and a centralized
system of government used to win such wars. For instance, the author explains that Athens had many
armies and was powerful in the sea, thus having an advantage over its

Camera Techniques Used in Hitchcock’s Thriller Movie,...
Camera Techniques Used in Hitchcock s Thriller Movie, Vertigo
A thriller is a type of film that usually instills excitement and suspense into the audience. A thriller is
commonly described as a tense edge of the seat environment. The movie, Vertigo, is one of the most
famous thrillers ever made. However, Vertigo does not fit into the stereotypical genre of thriller.
Vertigo, often viewed as an experimental film because it was one of the first major thrillers of that
time that used many different and innovative camera techniques. These techniques used in this film
are different types of lighting, montage, intense music, etc. Vertigo is known to be one of Hitchcock s
best movies because of his unique sense of style and his famous ... Show more content on

When Scottie falls into his state of Vertigo, the camera seems to go berserk with different angles and
colors. Specifically near the end of the movie when Scottie falls in his dream, his Vertigo seems to
kick in on overdrive. The implementation of the creeping music, the flashes of colors, the scared look,
and the montage of expressions proves that Vertigo was a form of a thriller movie. Does Vertigo fit
into the genre of thriller? Yes. But does Vertigo fit the thriller genre before, now, and in the future?
That is the question that is going to be answered.
In the beginning of the movie, the audience is thrown into immediate action. At first you see a cop
chase a man and Scottie, the detective, following. The music increases the suspense as the audiences
waits anxiously to see what is going on. Scottie all of a sudden falls and is holding on to dear life at
the end of the roof. This is when the audience first learns about Scottie s Vertigo. The audience can
feel his fear of heights. The feel of a thriller movie incapacitates that audience at this point because
they are wondering at the edge of their seats what is going to happen. As the audience sees the point of
view of Scottie looking down onto the ground, they can feel Scottie s Vertigo. The camera work on
that shot was revolutionary in that film period. The camera seems to blur and zoom in and out to
portray how scared Scottie is. The lighting in this shot and

Antisemitism and the Gentleman s Agreement
Anti Semitism and the Gentleman s Agreement
Cultural diversity includes opinions, appearances, values, and beliefs, as well as the categories of race,
ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability (Koppelman, 2011). One method of
understanding cultural diversity is through films. Films are often used as vehicles to reveal, discuss,
and explore relationships, conflicts, lessons, and/or history. In an attempt to analyze the cultural
diversity portrayed in a film, I have chosen to watch and analyze Gentleman s Agreement . The
analysis of the film will take place in four parts: (1) conflict between minority and majority groups;
(2) film s perspective in approach to the problem of anti semitism; (3) ... Show more content on

Wales response was: Of course, you know it will be Yes to the Green and No to the Greenbergs. This
statement serves as the basis for establishing the conflict to be exposed.
In addition to beginning and exacerbating conflicts, labeling can occur informally and formally.
Informal labels are utilized by an individual or group of individuals to establish a means of
identification for another individual or group of individuals. Formal labels are established by
institutions, such as academia and government, as a means to identify an individual or group of
individuals possessing similar characteristics.
A label has the power to define the individual or group of individuals being identified. That power is
equal to control (Koppelman, 2011). Both can have a positive or negative effect. Unfortunately, the
labels used by the majority are meant to have a negative effect. In fact, the labels are meant to demean
and hurt as much as possible. They are so negative that there seems to be the intent to drive the labeled
individual and/or group away, so they are no longer present and able to interact with the majority.
Within the context of the movie, the minority group referred to themselves as Jewish or Jews. When
used to describe one s self, I believe that the intent was to refer to one s ethnicity, nationality, and/or
religion, because they are strongly interrelated. Typically, the majority group labels itself in a way that
clearly indicates

Simon Farrah Abraham Character Analysis
Simon Saran is a forced to be reckoned with. His on again off again relationship with Farrah Abraham
has been documented through Teen Mom OG. The two are apparently off at the moment, though that
doesn t mean there isn t a reconciliation possible. Because Saran has been a huge part of the MTV
franchise, the show offered him his own special. This is a big deal because the ones who have been
offered the same have all been married to or have had children with the star they were attached to
while filming. Being Simon is set to air this coming Wednesday on MTV. It will be an hour long
special featuring Simon Saran in his everyday life. He confirmed this was coming back in June, but
Farrah Abraham shaded him when he mentioned it. The two have been hot and cold for several
months now. Saran is a businessman, and now, Abraham is back to selling sex. ... Show more content

According to Starcasm, Simon Saran and Courtland Rogers got into an insult match where one went a
little too far. Everyone knows that Twitter is the place where anything goes. Racial comments, insults,
and everything else can be seen on the platform with no enforcing of etiquette. Saran was going off
about Donald Trump being blamed for the Las Vegas massacre, and Rogers decided to have his say
with him. It appears that since Jenelle Evans no longer wants anything to do with Courtland, he is
really trying to stay relevant. Both men reverted to heavy insults, with Courtland Rogers insinuating
that Simon Saran was a terrorist with a tweet about hijacking a plane. Of course, Simon wasn t
innocent in the debate, but Courtland really went the whole nine yards with his comments. There is a
streak of jealousy there. Being Simon is airing this upcoming week and since Rogers no longer has
any connection to the show, there may be a little bitterness. The two exchanged a few more tweets and

Genetic Expression In Gene Expression In gene expression DNA, the blueprint of life is transcribed into RNA, a nucleic acid that acts as a messenger carrying instructions that control the synthesis of proteins. Gene expression is vital to determining cell functions and exactly how much protein should be produced by the cell. The process in which the end proteins are modified can also be manipulated by researchers. The types of cells which are typically handled in laboratories include prokaryotes. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this study, plasmids with ampicillin resistance (pAMP) known as pUC18, were manipulated due to their stability in extreme environments. The pUC18 plasmid pAMP gene codes for the production of beta lactamase, an enzyme utilized in the breakdown of ampicillin. Once E. coli obtains this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were the second type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid contains genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence, a light emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be analyzed through the light emissions. Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the bacteria does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the ability to do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. To neutralize the negatively charged DNA in E. coli, the use of CaCl2 (sodium chloride), a positively charged solution, dissociates the calcium from chloride, which enters the cells and alters the charge. This process is known as electroporation. This causes the bacteria cells to swell and the calcium molecules help adjust the cell membrane to become ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Ritz Carlton Environment Analysis Environment analysis The Ritz Carlton Hotel will inevitably have a negative impact on the environment due to its large size, hence the considerable pollution and the waste which would be produced during its construction and operation. Green house gas is a pollutant that being continually produced throughout the entire life cycle of the hotel. Initially, transportation of construction material and construction are both carbon dioxide high emitting activities. During the operation, the tourism being brought about will also contribute to the green house emissions significantly. However, on some level, the extensive area of vegetation covered nearby could compensate for the green house gas being emitted. Effluent is a typical waste that would be generated. It increases the chance of contamination to the waters around the RCH, more specifically, the Parramatta River. The effect of effluent becomes even more profound when the Parramatta River has not reached a swimmable level of cleanliness. Habit destruction may occur after the completion of the RCH, where the booming development of this second CBD may cause anthropogenic ecosystem change. For example, effluent emitted by the RCH which ends up in the river could taint the water with chemical and microbial substances, resulting in the decrease of aquatic life. There would be a certain amount of levy to be paid regarding to the waste being generated, in terms of the green house gas and the landfill. In complying with the laws ... • 6. Othello Racial Undertone Essay Nicholas Anderson Dr. Rex English 150 2/27/2014 Racial Undertone s The study in contrasts between Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s 2001 movie O have many prevalent differences. Issues of jealousy and racial tensions are still deeply rooted into our society and can be examined in theO, Othello, and the Elizabethan era where many of Shakespeare s plays took place. The racial undertone was more prevalent in the movie, although in each interpretation Othello/Odin was the only black individual in each setting. However the most prevalent differences between William Shakespeare s Othello and Tim Blake Nelson s O are the racial undertones shown through cinematic techniques and Othello/Odin s self perception. The director used cinematic techniques and different stereotypes to explore the racial tension between white and black society. Hugo explains the meaning of the hawk in his soliloquy towards the end of the movie. He expresses the thought that Odin is a powerful and majestic hawk, this is something that Hugo desires. Which is controversial because in Othello and O black males usually had aspirations to be seen as a dove. However the image of a black male does not fit into a white ... Over the ensuing weeks, the world watched in horror as a natural disaster transformed into a man made catastrophe: fail safes failed, cooling systems shut down, nuclear rods melted, communications broke down, hazardous radioactive exposures and contamination occurred, and masses of people were displaced. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To summarize, after the earthquake, the initial shutdown of Fukushima s reactors went according to plan; the real problem was when the second wave of the tsunami struck. A fifty feet high wave easily surged over the seawall, destroying seawater pumps and drowning the plant s electrical system and power panels. This rendered the emergency backup generators unusable and lead to a station blackout. Without any power to run the pumps and valves needed to provide a steady flow of cooling water, the radioactive fuel would overheat, the remaining water would boil away, and the core would proceed inexorably toward a meltdown. (p. 12) Serious communication problems between TEPCO [Tokyo Electric Power Company, operator of the plant] and the multilayered Japanese government and its huge nuclear bureaucracy hampered recovery efforts in the hours that followed the nuclear crisis. On paper, all these duties and responsibilities may have seemed clear. In practice, however, the system proved unworkable. The Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier (a friend of Uslar Pietri) used the term lo real maravilloso (roughly marvelous reality ) in the prologue to his novel The Kingdom of this World (1949). A Research Study On Stem Cell Therapy Introduction Stem cells are homogeneous cells found in the human body which have potential to change into, or differentiate into a range of specific types of cells (Stoppler, 1996). The refurbishment and protection of many adult tissues are safeguarded by stem cells (SCs) which exist in the top of the cellular sorting section of these tissues (Beck, 2013). Practical assessments, such as transplantation, in vitro clonogenic assesses (technique used to study efficacy of exact agents in terms of the proliferation and endurance of cells) and in vivo lineage tracing, have been undertaken to evaluate the repairing and differentiation capability of normal SCs (Beck, 2013). Currently, research is on going to resolve whether stem cell therapy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This literature review will evaluate the 2007 research article on, Identification of Cancer Stem Cell Like Side Population Cells in Human Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cell Line, by Wang, Guo, Chen, Zeng and Lu, and determine whether SP cells in human NPC are viable as an aid in efficient drugs and therapeutic strategies which target NPC Cancer stem cells (CSC) (Wang, Guo, Chen, Zeng, Lu, 2007). Review of Underpinning Science Cancer stem cells (CSCs) give rise to the movement of cancer from one section of the body to another, and are located in several tumour varieties. The unique properties of stem cells which make them different from normal cells are; their unspecialised nature, capability to give rise to specialised cell types and ability to divide and renew themselves (Bethesda, 2015). These stem cell properties can be used to classify CSCs, and therefore can enable them to treat NPC. A major result of this manipulation process is the ability the cell can have to extrude dyes such as Hoechst 33342 through the ATP binding cassette (which encloses membrane proteins that transfer an extensive array of substrates) (Dean, 2002)(Wu, C., Alman, B. A., 2008). Importantly, SP cells are a source of research as they contain these stem cell characteristics and are therefore able to exclude the Hoechst 33342 dye. This ... Why Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer Cell Phone Usage and Cancer Southeast Missouri State University UI319 Science, Technology, and Society Instructor: Mr. Lauder Submitted by Hannah Wiggins In issue 8 of our text beginning on page 135, Olga V. Naidenko and Linda S. Erdreich debate the issue of health effects of cell phone usage. Naidenko states that cell phone usage does cause cancer, or at least that more research should be done about longer term usage than what has been done previously. Erdreich opposes the idea, stating that studies have shown there are no long term health effects of cell phone usage (Easton, 2010. p. 135 147). She states that there has been evidence showing a 90% greater occurrence of developing glioma on the side the cell phone is most commonly used. She also states that there has been research done to show that acoustic neuroma, a usually benign growth on the nerve that runs from the inner ear to the brain, increases by 60% in long term cell phone users. Acoustic neuroma can cause hearing loss, ringing in the ear, and unsteadiness ( Acoustic Neuroma, 2013). The opponent, Erdreich, states that research has proven that cell phone usage is not dangerous. Erdreich begins her statement by saying that cell phones use radio waves, similar to television, baby monitors, microwaves, and of course, the radio. She concluded that those definitions had been used to suppress women through the ages. For de Beauvoir, the views of individuals are socially and culturally produced. Femininity is not inherent, it is a construct that has been learned through socialization to keep men dominant. De Beauvoir argued that women have been historically treated as inferior and secondary to men for three reasons. She exemplifies that society teaches women, one, to fulfil a male s needs and therefore exist in relation to men. Two, to follow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... De Beauvoir, an author who critiqued Freud s theory, that it is not a matter of penis envy, rather what the penis stands for. Women are lesser than men. Author Sigmund Freud had said, Most of people s personality form during early childhood years. He outlined a series of psychosexual stages that children pass through. The stages consist of the oral stage, the anal stage, the phallic stage, the latency stage, and the genital stage. From birth to approximately 18 months, kids are in the oral stage. They get most of their pleasure by sucking, biting and chewing. During this stage, kids are still dependent on mom. Next is the anal stage, kids are in that from 18 months to 3 years old. During the anal stage children get a sense of control of the environment, as their mothers try to toilet train them. This is called the anal stage because pleasure comes from their bladder and sphincter muscles. They know that when they use these muscles, they can control part of their environment and no longer totally be dependent on mom. During the phallic stage, from 3 to 6 years old, pleasure comes from the genitals. Freud believed at this stage kids would become sexually attracted to the opposite sex parent. Jealous and rivalrous of their same sex parent. During the phallic stage for men, they develop castration anxiety because they feel desires for their mothers, and murderous towards the fathers. • 18. Frederick Douglass, An American Slave Frederick Douglass is well known for many of his literary achievements. He is best known, now, as a writer. As a writer, Frederick Douglass shined. As a speaker, he was the best. There was no abolitionist, black or white, that was more for his speaking skills. (McFeely, 206) So impressive were Frederick Douglass s oratorical and intellectual abilities that opponents refused to believe that he had been a slave and alleged that he was a impostor brought up on the public by the abolitionists. In reply, Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845), which he revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under the title Life and Times Of Frederick Douglass. (Graves, 52 ) Frederick s oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War time period literature. Douglass s most significant autobiographical works include: Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And Times Of Frederick Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and share a similar message, but are written by Frederick at different times of his life, looking at the past in different ways. In Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Douglass used a simple, yet educated way to show how he felt as a slave growing up in Maryland. • 19. Do People Really Have Free Will Essay Do people really have free will? Toshia Perry Axia College Slide 2 What exactly is free will? Speaker notes: It is the ability for a person to determine some or all of his actions. Some consider free will to be its own cause. Some consider free will to be independent of any other causation, predestination, or predetermination by any other person, event, or stimulus. Of course, this does not make sense since a person is free to do as he/she wants but what he/she wants can only be consistent with his own nature. I propose that free will involves four aspects: Conception, Desire, Choice, and Accomplishment. Conception leads to desire which leads to choice which leads to accomplishing that choice. We must ask ourselves, Free from what? A mind free from all motivating factors would have nothing to base decisions upon. There is just no such thing as an uncaused choice. Many people, religious and secular alike, wonder if cause and effect ultimately means that everything in the universe including human behavior is predestined, bound to happen, or predetermined. We are not made to do things by cause and effect we are PART of cause and effect we make ourselves do things. The cause and effect that goes on in our minds is what constitutes self, and our particular cause effect process is manifestly different from what we normally think of cause and effect. We remember our past, and direct our actions to bring about specific results to satisfy feelings of need and desire something random causality cannot do. The panelist covered wide variety of topic areas such as: analytical methods, data gaps and research needs, scenarios for which hair analysis may be appropriate; to name a few. The agency has conducted several hair analyses to assess current exposures, but wants to determine whether science supports this effort. To make it simple, the Constitution creates the systems of government of a certain state. The Government of Canada (n.d.). mentioned that Canada has three branches of the government: the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. In Canada, the Queen exercises the executive power. The legislative branch is known as the parliament. The parliament is comprised of the Senate and the House of Commons (Government of Canada, n.d.). This is where bills are passed and subsequently become laws. The judiciary is comprised of judges. They are burdened with the responsibility of interpreting the law and making sure that its application conforms to what is set forth in the Constitution. The fundamental powers granted by the Constitution to the government enable the latter to intervene and regulate people s liberty and rights. However, this intervention is not absolute because the Constitution also provides for its limits. There is a need to authorize the government and limit it at the same time so that its authority and the liberty and exercise of rights of the citizens are well balanced. • 24. The Sexual Function Of Laboratory Animals Abstract Castration in males may be the result of disease or injury. It is expected that after a castration procedure, the males will lose sexual function. In this experiment there were seventeen male rats randomly distributed into three groups; sham group (N = 5), castrated and oil group (N = 4) and castrated and testosterone group (N = 7). The control group received a sham operation and bi daily injections of oil to show that it was not a surgical procedure or bi daily injections that caused the lowered production of testosterone. As expected sexual function was able to be restored in the castrated males by giving bi daily supplementation of testosterone hormone at the same rate that testicles would normally produce this hormone. The castrated males that did not receive the testosterone injections but had received the bi daily injections of oil, did not have successful restoration of their sexual function. Studying sexual function in laboratory animals is important to be able to develop ways to supplement hormones in humans and to restore sexual function in those who have suffered an injury or disease that resulted in a castration procedure. The role of testosterone deficiency in sexual function can be directly linked to diseases of reproductive organs, injury, certain medications and aging factors. Theoretically, anchor should be open minded, to writing the true story and report the fact o the audiences. But, if I am a closed mind anchor, I know in advance which side I am on, and engage the correspondent or accept the article that will give aid and comfort to that side. O Connor meant the mother s death to act as a lesson for Julian who as close minded as his mother was, must learn to converge or end up like his mother who was killed due to the physical engagement with the black lady as well as their unhealthy relationship. Julian s mother as a little girl was taught that blacks were only meant for one thing, which was to work and live as slaves. The setting of the story was approximately in the 1950s, the time the black Americans were treated as second class citizens and finally raised their voice demanding equal rights under the law. Incidentally, Julian s mother had a different upbringing. She grew up visiting her grandfather in an old mansion where they owned slaves. As a result of this, Mrs.Chestny was taught and raised as her grandfather was, believing in the thought that whites were superior to blacks. She stated that blacks should be given the right to rise, but on their own side of the fence (2). Consequently, Julian s mother was not able to converge in their time and she had to go. ... They are obviously not thinking clearly, because the benefit of bilinguals, significantly outweigh the bad. Suffragism In Iron Jawed Angels A powerful yet passionate film, Iron Jawed Angels, directed by Katja von Garnier, displays the hardship that suffragists faced during the years of the Women s Suffrage Movement. Despite a multitude of people strongly disagreeing with a woman s right to vote in an election, there were influential and eager individuals such as suffragist leader, Alice Paul and one of her supporters, Lucy Burns, both of whom had remarkably strong beliefs, that were determined to stand for what they believe in and obtain the right for all women to vote. • 43. Thucydides Summary There is little doubt that Thucydides is regarded as one of the best historical writers for coming up with his book, presenting facts and truth about the war even though he was a general in the Athens army. By using a unique style of writing, the author was attempting a unique style which involved being aggressively rational and giving an impersonal analysis of the history of his times being free from religious influence. The style used in writing the book is different because the author makes the war to be understood in respect to human politics and power struggles that were taking place between the two warring factions; Athens and Sparta. The style of writing is different from how Herodotus had explained the Greek war against the Persians, putting too much emphasis on the religious side of the war. Thucydides tries to be different by describing the human factors which made the Athens side to lose the war. He points that Athens was more concerned about expanding than winning the war and that most of its generals defected after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author advocated the theme of realism by illustrating how small cities such as Melian would have benefited had they joined the Athenians. He notes that the cities were destroyed because they were not realistic about their situation hence they would not have stood against the Athenians. Throughout the book, Thucydides shows the difference in his works by using economics and politics as the two main factors which used to determine wars at that time. Such a move was sin contrast with how historians used to portray wars at that time. Historians usually used gods and their influence to explain army victories but Thucydides explains that the cities with the most money and a centralized system of government used to win such wars. Specifically near the end of the movie when Scottie falls in his dream, his Vertigo seems to kick in on overdrive. The implementation of the creeping music, the flashes of colors, the scared look, and the montage of expressions proves that Vertigo was a form of a thriller movie. Does Vertigo fit into the genre of thriller? Yes. But does Vertigo fit the thriller genre before, now, and in the future? That is the question that is going to be answered. In the beginning of the movie, the audience is thrown into immediate action. At first you see a cop chase a man and Scottie, the detective, following. The music increases the suspense as the audiences waits anxiously to see what is going on. Scottie all of a sudden falls and is holding on to dear life at the end of the roof. This is when the audience first learns about Scottie s Vertigo. The audience can feel his fear of heights. The feel of a thriller movie incapacitates that audience at this point because they are wondering at the edge of their seats what is going to happen. Antisemitism and the Gentleman s Agreement Anti Semitism and the Gentleman s Agreement Cultural diversity includes opinions, appearances, values, and beliefs, as well as the categories of race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability (Koppelman, 2011). One method of understanding cultural diversity is through films. Films are often used as vehicles to reveal, discuss, and explore relationships, conflicts, lessons, and/or history. In an attempt to analyze the cultural diversity portrayed in a film, I have chosen to watch and analyze Gentleman s Agreement . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wales response was: Of course, you know it will be Yes to the Green and No to the Greenbergs. This statement serves as the basis for establishing the conflict to be exposed. In addition to beginning and exacerbating conflicts, labeling can occur informally and formally. Informal labels are utilized by an individual or group of individuals to establish a means of identification for another individual or group of individuals. Formal labels are established by institutions, such as academia and government, as a means to identify an individual or group of individuals possessing similar characteristics. A label has the power to define the individual or group of individuals being identified. That power is equal to control (Koppelman, 2011). Both can have a positive or negative effect. Unfortunately, the labels used by the majority are meant to have a negative effect. In fact, the labels are meant to demean and hurt as much as possible. They are so negative that there seems to be the intent to drive the labeled individual and/or group away, so they are no longer present and able to interact with the majority. Within the context of the movie, the minority group referred to themselves as Jewish or Jews. When used to describe one s self, I believe that the intent was to refer to one s ethnicity, nationality, and/or religion, because they are strongly interrelated.
