In my initial submission for Lesson 1, I recall being amused by the statement in the introduction of
Navigating English Grammar that humans have always been fascinated by language. Then, and now,
this still seems like an understatement to me. Language is an incredible facet to me and humans of all
ages. To consider that an infant can communicate with few words and more gestures and then continue
to develop the use of language as the number of words increase proves to be such an interesting
phenomenon which has an influence on a human s existence. This influence permeates throughout
language in formal or informal use. In that same lesson, I recall the childhood influences upon my
language development. Being a young Southern woman, a distinct dialect permeated my childhood
environments; from home, school, and small community, the slow, slang filled conversations
enlightened me in the ways of people around me. This information partnered with the Grammar Quest
proved that my own method of verb usage perplexed me. The instruction received in my local
elementary and middle school demonstrated an error in my grandfather s way of speaking; therefore,
my way of speaking did not follow prescriptive rules, and additional instruction was deemed
necessary. With this review and research of prior writings, the use of verbs and verb forms used in a
prescriptive nature proves to be an area of concern for my own proper use of Standard English.

Manifest Destiny was an idea expressed during west ward expansion. It was the belief that God
ordained that Americans must travel from coast to coast. Americans were also supposed to share their
light to the primitive natives. Natives in the photo are showed in the darker side of the painting. They
are fleeing from the giant angel heading towards them. The angel in the middle of the painting
carrying a book and telegraph wires to insinuate their intellectual dominance. The painting tries to
show how in the early to mid 19th century Americans believed God is always on their side and
justifies everything they do from taking land to racism. In the painting, the big angel stands out at the
center intending to portray God s support of western expansion. This is done by putting the angel
smack in the center and having multiple shapes draw the eye to it. For example, the mountain range in
the background of the photo makes a triangle that has the angel where the summit of the mountain
should be. Also, the angel is carrying telegraph lines which make the observer look at the angel. The
angel is facing west towards unconquered land and seems to almost be pointing towards that land.

This comes from Vance being determined and by working very hard so he can make something out of
his life. So, in the memoir Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, it is shown that Vance s argument about
developing success is that hard work leads to success. Vance argues that hard work leads to success by
using positive language and diction that have connotations. Vance is a graduate from one of the top
law schools, Yale Law School, which means that Vance had to put in a lot of hard work to get there.

My Own Passion For Working With Young Children
Growing up I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and
I am well aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My
own passion for working with young children extends from wanting to emulate those role models and
