The definition of heroes has been evolved variously through the ages. Greeks defined heroes as brave,
strong men or demigods who accomplished great quests during their lives. People nowadays may
define heroes as people who are changing the world to become a better place. A hero is someone who
has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.1 Both Greek heroes and modern day heroes
complete tasks which are nearly impossible for a normal human. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who
was the leader of activists in getting India independence from Britain, is a great hero to many people.
Although Gandhi and Greek heroes have many similar and different aspects about being a hero, there
are great reasons what make Gandhi superior.

was imprisoned many times in his life, but he never gave up, and tried his best to achieve India

Industrialization, Population Growth and Urbanization are in dynamic relationship with each other

For instances, according to the statistics provided by Linda Alchin, the population of Chicago in 1870
was 298,977; it rose to 1,698,575 in 1900 and in 1920 it reached the number of 2,701,705. Seattle is
another typical example which had the population of 1,107 in 1870 and in 1920 it increased nearly
285 times with the number of 315,312. Additionally, in 1840, the U.S had only 131 cities and by 1900
that number had risen to over 1,700. Eventually these activities brought out abundant urbanization
issues, such as environmental degradation, typically in the quality of water, air and noise; inefficient
transportation system; overcrowding; housing; unemployment; rise in crime due to poverty and lack of
control; the sharp contrast between the rich and the poor; etc. For example, cheap accommodation was
developed as tall, narrow tenement buildings in dark, crowed, unpleasant and unhealthy living
conditions. Pollution and poor sanitation caused fatal epidemics in cities.
Those disadvantages of urbanization and industrialization sparked serious riots and strikes by workers.
Not only workers but also the American in general advocated reform of country s economic, political,
and social system during the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. By 1917, the reformers had brought
tremendous changes in government s responsibilities to the citizen, reducing poverty, enhancing living
conditions of the poor and regulating big business. This era

Thomas Clement Douglas, or Tommy Douglas was a prominent Canadian politician during the 1900s,
as both a premier and a minister of health in the House of Commons. Though he was born in Scotland,
his family moved to Canada at a very early age. Tommy Douglas spent most of his early life in
Manitoba and most of his later life in Saskatchewan. Before he got into politics, Douglas was a Baptist
preacher. He accomplished lots in his time and was even voted as the number one on the CBC

During his time at Brandon College, he met a woman named Irma Dempsey. Whom he married in
1930. Tommy and Irma had two daughters. Shirley who was born in 1934, and Joan, who was adopted
later on. An interesting fact, famous actor Kiefer Sutherland is the son of Shirley Douglas, making him
Tommy Douglas grandson. Tommy Douglas cared deeply for his family.
Tommy was born 1904 in Camelon, Scotland. When Tommy Douglas was 6 years old, his family
relocated to the city of Winnipeg in Canada. Unfortunately, before Tommy had left Scotland, he had
fallen and wounded his right knee which led to Osteomyelitis(an infection of the bone). Many
treatments in Scotland had to be done to help him recover, even though later in Winnipeg the
Osteomyelitis started up again. There was not much that could be done as medical care at that time in
Canada was very expensive. His family was not wealthy. The only option that seemed present to them
was to amputate his leg, until news came that a well known medical surgeon had wanted to operate on
Tommy as long as his parents agreed to allow his medical students to observe. This event had never
left Tommy s memory. In 1918, at age 14, Tommy Douglas had dropped out of high school to pursue a
job that could earn his family more money. 1919, was the year of the Winnipeg Strike. Tommy had
witnessed the horror of the strike firsthand. He saw policemen beating strikers with clubs, he saw law
enforcement shoot workers with guns, he saw cars set on fire.

of the American dream. Although, in one s mind a specific picture forms when reading about the
American dream this does not mean everyone is seeing the same landscape. A prevalent theme in The
Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and Flight by Sherman Alexie is the
potency and prevalence of diversity on the American dream. In each of these compelling works,
connoisseurs get a taste of life from different demographics viewpoints and a measure of what it
means to be yearning for the diverse definition of American ideals.
To begin with, The Joy Luck Club centers its content around the lives of eight women of Chinese
heritage each with their own stories to tell; yet, all striving to satisfy their aspirations in America. A
concisive cross is common between the mothers hopes compared to those of the American born
daughters. Immigrating to America for various reasons, the four mothers all had one goal in mind, to
not only construct themselves a better life, but also ensure the finest future for their daughters. For the
mothers in the Joy Luck Club, the American dream was to instill Chinese history, heritage, and habit
in their daughters while providing American opportunities of growth, gratification, and gallantry.

The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting, 1989 Some refer to it as The Slaughter in a School Yard,
The Stockton Massacre, and others as The Cleveland Elementary School Shooting. Something as
horrifying as someone shooting down innocent children playing at recesses on school grounds was
never expected here in the United States of America. Although there was past cases of school
shootings, this was the first shooting to be televised on national television of its magnitude (Taining, P
et al., 2014). A mass murderer is defined as someone who slaughters many people at one time. This
particular incident unfortunately was not the slaughter of people, but it was children. It happened
around 11:40 AM on January 17th, 1989 in Stockton, California. A man by the name of Patrick
Edward Purdy opened fire on children ages six through nine playing at recess on school grounds of
Cleveland Elementary School. This tragic case brought questions to people everywhere in our nation
as to why it was so easy for a mentally unstable individual such as Patrick Purdy to enter a gun store

In hopes of spotting such profitable incidents, penny press journalists were always on the look out for
anything suspicious and anything worthy of being sensationalized. Interestingly, in his short story, The
Man of the Crowd, Edgar Allan Poe includes a first person narrator who also seems to be on the look
