Introduction to
Self Determined
Learning

Heutagogy applies a holistic approach to
develop learner’s capabilities, with learning
as a proactive process where learners serves
purpose of the agent in their own learning,
which occurs as a result of personal
experiences - Hase and Kenyon (2000)

• Heutagogy is strategy where instructor facilitates the learning process by
providing guidance and resources, but fully relinquishes ownership of the
learning path and process to the learner (Hase & Kenyon, 2000)
• Learner negotiates learning and determines what will be learned and how
it will be learned
• Heutagogy is a also called self-determined learning
• It’s practices and principles are rooted in andragogy
• Learners are highly autonomous and self-determined
• Heutagogy makes extensive use of Web 2.0 technologies and is getting
popularity due to the affordances of time and resources provided by the
technology

Emphasis is placed on development of learner capacity and capability
 Goal is to produce learners who are well-prepared for the complexities
of today’s professional demands
This approach is fit for applying with emerging ICTs in distance education
Distance educators develop and deliver instruction using latest
technologies such as social media
It’s a learner-centred approach where instructor has autonomy to utilize
unconventional methods and techniques
Web 2.0 offers an environment that supports a heutagogical approach
by supporting development of instructor generated content and learner-
generated content
learner is self-directed for discovering information and are defining their
learning path

Heutagogy

• Net-Centric: Involves online learning and learning environment involving social
media
• Autonomy: a) Learner is highly autonomous to determine learning path and
learning is self determined, and b) instructor is autonomous to adopt any
method as they see fit
• Purpose: Enhancing capacities and capabilities
• Double-loop learning: When learners considering the outcome of solving a
problem results into metacognition of learner’s own beliefs and actions
• Distance Education: Involving a) Contract Learning, b) Prior Learning
Assessment, c) Matured Adult Learners, d) Learner’s Autonomy, e) Self
Directedness, f) Flexible Curriculum, and g) Flexible and Negotiated
Assessment
• Collaborative Learning: where learning path is individual yet meaning and
reflection on learning is shared

Double Loop Learning
• Double-loop learning happens when learners question and test one’s
personal values and assumptions

Assertions of Heutagogy
• Adults learn best when they have a lot of control over what
they learn and how they learn it.
• Assessment of adult learning should focus on a) what the
learner believes they have learned, and b)the various ways that
learning has impacted, or will impact their values, ideals, and
behaviour
• Enhancement of capacity and capabilities to learn
• Social Media is used for a) connectedness, b) information
discovery, c) information sharing, and d) collaboration
Features of a
Heutagogical
Classroom
 Collaborative Learning : creating shared meaning, shared reflection,
more effective workability of the concept learned
 Empathy and Mutual Trust : learning environment is comfortable and
stress free
 Self Directed Learning: SDL as a skill gets developed with help of the
instructor
 Instructor Learner Relationship: Should be supportive with open
dialogue
 Tools and Techniques: Social Media, Mobile Learning, Learner
generated content, e-Learning etc.
 Self Efficacy, Creativity, Positive Values and communication are
exhibited

Heutagogy: Introduction to Self-Determined Learning

  • 1. Heutagogy: Introduction to Self Determined Learning Dr Shiva Shukla, Assistant Professor, Central University of Punjab
  • 2. Heutagogy applies a holistic approach to develop learner’s capabilities, with learning as a proactive process where learners serves purpose of the agent in their own learning, which occurs as a result of personal experiences - Hase and Kenyon (2000) 2
  • 3. 3 • Heutagogy is strategy where instructor facilitates the learning process by providing guidance and resources, but fully relinquishes ownership of the learning path and process to the learner (Hase & Kenyon, 2000) • Learner negotiates learning and determines what will be learned and how it will be learned • Heutagogy is a also called self-determined learning • It’s practices and principles are rooted in andragogy • Learners are highly autonomous and self-determined • Heutagogy makes extensive use of Web 2.0 technologies and is getting popularity due to the affordances of time and resources provided by the technology What is Heutagogy ?
  • 5. 5 Emphasis is placed on development of learner capacity and capability  Goal is to produce learners who are well-prepared for the complexities of today’s professional demands This approach is fit for applying with emerging ICTs in distance education Distance educators develop and deliver instruction using latest technologies such as social media It’s a learner-centred approach where instructor has autonomy to utilize unconventional methods and techniques Web 2.0 offers an environment that supports a heutagogical approach by supporting development of instructor generated content and learner- generated content learner is self-directed for discovering information and are defining their learning path
  • 7. 7 • Net-Centric: Involves online learning and learning environment involving social media • Autonomy: a) Learner is highly autonomous to determine learning path and learning is self determined, and b) instructor is autonomous to adopt any method as they see fit • Purpose: Enhancing capacities and capabilities • Double-loop learning: When learners considering the outcome of solving a problem results into metacognition of learner’s own beliefs and actions • Distance Education: Involving a) Contract Learning, b) Prior Learning Assessment, c) Matured Adult Learners, d) Learner’s Autonomy, e) Self Directedness, f) Flexible Curriculum, and g) Flexible and Negotiated Assessment • Collaborative Learning: where learning path is individual yet meaning and reflection on learning is shared
  • 8. 8 Double Loop Learning • Double-loop learning happens when learners question and test one’s personal values and assumptions
  • 9. 9 Assertions of Heutagogy • Adults learn best when they have a lot of control over what they learn and how they learn it. • Assessment of adult learning should focus on a) what the learner believes they have learned, and b)the various ways that learning has impacted, or will impact their values, ideals, and behaviour • Enhancement of capacity and capabilities to learn • Social Media is used for a) connectedness, b) information discovery, c) information sharing, and d) collaboration
  • 11.  Collaborative Learning : creating shared meaning, shared reflection, more effective workability of the concept learned  Empathy and Mutual Trust : learning environment is comfortable and stress free  Self Directed Learning: SDL as a skill gets developed with help of the instructor  Instructor Learner Relationship: Should be supportive with open dialogue  Tools and Techniques: Social Media, Mobile Learning, Learner generated content, e-Learning etc.  Self Efficacy, Creativity, Positive Values and communication are exhibited 11
