 MCV= • Mean corpuscular volume • Femto liter (fl)
 MCH= • Mean cell hemoglobin • Pico gram (pg)
 MCHC= • Mean corpuscular hemoglobin • % or gram (g)
 RDW= • Red cell distribution width (RDW) • %

Rule of 3
1-RBC x 9 → = PCV or Hct
2-RBC x 3 → = Hb
3-Hb x 3 → =PCV or Hct
4-PCV ÷ 3 →= 𝐻𝑏
5-PCV ÷ 9 →= 𝑅𝐵𝐶
The instrument calculate the Hct or PCV as
follow
Hct=MCV ×RBC count
The Hct or PCV calculated as follow
RBC x 9
Hb X 3
MCV x RBC

7. what cause the  Low RBC count and
low Hct with normal Hb?
cause falsely high calculations of MCH
and MCHC, respectively.
Ex .
• Hb 12g/dl
• Hct:29
• RBC: 3.2
MCHC= 12/27 x100 = 44
what cause the  elevation of Hb on the
MCH and MCHC?
cause falsely high calculations of MCH
and MCHC, respectively.
Ex .
• Hb 18g/dl
• Hct:29
• RBC: 3.0
MCH= 18/3.0 x10 = 60
MCHC= 18/29 x 100 =62
