Barbiturates are central nervous system depressants that can produce effects ranging from mild sedation to total anesthesia. They are also effective as anxiolytics, hypnotics, and anticonvulsants. While barbiturates have analgesic effects, they are not typically used in surgery alone due to their weak pain-relieving properties. Barbiturates are addictive and have largely been replaced by benzodiazepines, except for uses in general anesthesia, epilepsy treatment, and assisted suicide due to benzodiazepines being less dangerous in overdose.
