Gymnosperms are seed plants whose seeds are not enclosed in fruits. They include conifers, cycads, ginkgo, and gnetophytes. Gymnosperms are divided into 3 classes - Cycadopsida, Coniferopsida, and Gnetopsida. They are the first seed plants and bear ovules and seeds exposed on the plant surface. Gymnosperms are economically important as sources of timber, food, medicine, oil, and industrial/ornamental plants. They include the oldest living tree species.
