Biological nitrification-denitrification is commonly used for nitrogen removal in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). Nitrification, is the sequential oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate. This process is catalysed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea (AOB and AOA) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), whose cooperation is needed to achieve complete nitrification. They are a phylogenetically diverse guild with pronounced ecological niche specialization and they differ from each other in fundamental physiological and molecular traits. Although the nitrification process in WWTPs has been investigated in depth, the response of microbial
communities are still a focus of considerable interest due to their high sensitivity to inhibitory compounds and environmental factors, that results in repeated breakdowns of nitrification performance. Most of studies have been mainly descriptive and/or exploratory and environmental interpretation has not been addressed. The greenhouse experiment found that gasoline caused more prominent morphological and spectral alterations than diesel in the plants. Analysis of hyperspectral imagery from the field study identified spectral indices and principal components that differentiated between contaminated and control plots. The results support the potential of spectroscopy to detect small hydrocarbon spills and identify more susceptible crop species for pipeline monitoring.

Cultivation of Sulfur Bacteria from Pond Water
The students cultivated two cultures of sulfur-utilizing bacteria from pond water using different reactor designs. They recorded pH, alkalinity, and optical density over six days as indicators of sulfur oxidation activity. Visual observation showed growth of pink/orange bacteria in the photosynthetic reactor and grey/orange bacteria in the non-photosynthetic reactor, pointing to growth of sulfur-utilizing Chromatiales and Thiobacillus bacteria. The data trends suggested the sulfur substrate was depleted after two days, explaining the stability of measured values over time.

calculated from ATP data contained in living microorganisms, this parameter represents the living biomass concentration, and the food/microorganisms ratio (F/M ratio) was calculated using AVSS instead of MLVSS. My Abstract of Thesis
This document summarizes a study on pesticide residues in onions in Isfahan, Iran. The study tested different extraction methods to measure residues of the pesticide Profenofos used to control onion thrips. Liquid-liquid extraction recovered residues at 117% on average but was inefficient. Solid phase extraction recovered only 39.5% of residues on average. Solid phase microextraction recovered between 40.8-106% of residues on average. The study found that 33% of onion samples contained pesticide residues above Codex limits, indicating inaccurate application of Profenofos by some farmers in the pre-harvest period. The study concludes accurate measurement of pesticide residues is important to ensure data quality and pesticide use

Pyrosequencing
Pyrosequencing is a sequencing method that detects light signals from enzymatic reactions triggered by nucleotide additions during DNA synthesis. It was developed in 1996 and allows high-throughput sequencing. There are solid and liquid phase variants, with the latter using an additional enzyme to eliminate washing steps. The process involves preparing DNA fragments, attaching to beads, amplification by PCR, and sequencing by flowing nucleotides over wells containing DNA-coated beads and enzymes, detecting light signals with each nucleotide incorporation.

This study screened sediments from 32 European lakes to investigate the distribution and diversity of anaerobic methane-oxidizing NC10 phylum bacteria. NC10 bacteria were detected in sediment samples from 4 lakes located in Finland and Sweden. Both the functional gene pmoA and 16S rRNA gene were present in surface sediments from different depths, indicating NC10 bacteria were actively oxidizing methane. However, their absence or low abundance in most lakes suggests low nitrate/nitrite availability limits their distribution. While aerobic proteobacterial methanotrophs were also present, their presence did not exclude NC10 bacteria. Further quantification of the positive samples is underway.

Ion Torrent sequencing is a next generation sequencing technique that detects hydrogen ions released during DNA polymerization using a semiconductor chip, allowing for DNA sequencing without the need for optical detection. Up-flow anaerobic sludge beds (UASB) reactors utilize waste-converting biofilms to treat toxic wastewater. Microorganisms in the biofilm granules break down compounds anaerobically and produce methane gas. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis measures the organic compounds in water and is used to determine the quality of treated effluent from UASB reactors, with the goal of reducing COD levels by 60-80%. Three UASB reactors were established in this study to collect samples from ports throughout and analyze COD levels over time, with initial results indicating the reactors are reducing COD as intended. However, further analysis is needed to fully understand the microbial interactions and optimize the reactors'
Accumualtion of TBT and Intersex Occurence on Marine Snails Littoraria Scabra
This study examined the accumulation of tributyltin (TBT) and the occurrence of intersex in the marine snail Littoraria scabra collected from two locations in Indonesia. The snails accumulated TBT when exposed to contaminated water and sediment/food at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 ppb, with higher accumulation at 3 ppb. Measurement of intersex stage showed higher levels in snails from Bitung Coastal Waters compared to Amurang Bay, indicating greater TBT contamination. The study concludes that L. scabra can be used as a biomonitor for TBT contamination through measurement of accumulation and intersex occurrence.

his study investigated the microbial community in a full scale anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor system for oil-produced water treatment in summer and winter. The community structures of fungi and bacteria were analyzed through polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and Illumina high-throughput sequencing, respectively. Chemical oxygen demand effluent concentration achieved lower than 50 mg/L level after the system in both summer and winter, however, chemical oxygen demand removal rates after anaerobic baffled reactor treatment system were significant higher in summer than that in winter, which conformed to the microbial community diversity. Saccharomycotina, Fusarium, and Aspergillus were detected in both anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor during summer and winter. The fungal communities in anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor were shaped by seasons and treatment units, while there was no correlation between abundance of fungi and chemical oxygen demand removal rates. Compared to summer, the total amount of the dominant hydrocarbon degrading bacteria decreased by 10.2% in anaerobic baffled reactor, resulting in only around 23% of chemical oxygen demand was removed in winter. Although microbial community significantly varied in the three parallel sulfide reducing bacteria, the performance of these bioreactors had no significant difference between summer and winter.

Cultivation of Sulfur Bacteria from Pond Water
The students cultivated two cultures of sulfur-utilizing bacteria from pond water using different reactor designs. They recorded pH, alkalinity, and optical density over six days as indicators of sulfur oxidation activity. Visual observation showed growth of pink/orange bacteria in the photosynthetic reactor and grey/orange bacteria in the non-photosynthetic reactor, pointing to growth of sulfur-utilizing Chromatiales and Thiobacillus bacteria. The data trends suggested the sulfur substrate was depleted after two days, explaining the stability of measured values over time.

A greenhouse experiment and field study examined the spectral response of plants exposed to gasoline and diesel at different levels over time. My Abstract of Thesis
This document summarizes a study on pesticide residues in onions in Isfahan, Iran. The study tested different extraction methods to measure residues of the pesticide Profenofos used to control onion thrips. Liquid-liquid extraction recovered residues at 117% on average but was inefficient. Solid phase extraction recovered only 39.5% of residues on average. Solid phase microextraction recovered between 40.8-106% of residues on average. The study found that 33% of onion samples contained pesticide residues above Codex limits, indicating inaccurate application of Profenofos by some farmers in the pre-harvest period. The study concludes accurate measurement of pesticide residues is important to ensure data quality and pesticide use

Pyrosequencing
Pyrosequencing is a sequencing method that detects light signals from enzymatic reactions triggered by nucleotide additions during DNA synthesis. It was developed in 1996 and allows high-throughput sequencing. There are solid and liquid phase variants, with the latter using an additional enzyme to eliminate washing steps. The process involves preparing DNA fragments, attaching to beads, amplification by PCR, and sequencing by flowing nucleotides over wells containing DNA-coated beads and enzymes, detecting light signals with each nucleotide incorporation.

This study screened sediments from 32 European lakes to investigate the distribution and diversity of anaerobic methane-oxidizing NC10 phylum bacteria. NC10 bacteria were detected in sediment samples from 4 lakes located in Finland and Sweden. Both the functional gene pmoA and 16S rRNA gene were present in surface sediments from different depths, indicating NC10 bacteria were actively oxidizing methane. However, their absence or low abundance in most lakes suggests low nitrate/nitrite availability limits their distribution. While aerobic proteobacterial methanotrophs were also present, their presence did not exclude NC10 bacteria. Further quantification of the positive samples is underway.

Ion Torrent sequencing is a next generation sequencing technique that detects hydrogen ions released during DNA polymerization using a semiconductor chip, allowing for DNA sequencing without the need for optical detection. Up-flow anaerobic sludge beds (UASB) reactors utilize waste-converting biofilms to treat toxic wastewater. Microorganisms in the biofilm granules break down compounds anaerobically and produce methane gas. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis measures the organic compounds in water and is used to determine the quality of treated effluent from UASB reactors, with the goal of reducing COD levels by 60-80%. Three UASB reactors were established in this study to collect samples from ports throughout and analyze COD levels over time, with initial results indicating the reactors are reducing COD as intended. However, further analysis is needed to fully understand the microbial interactions and optimize the reactors'
Accumualtion of TBT and Intersex Occurence on Marine Snails Littoraria Scabra
This study examined the accumulation of tributyltin (TBT) and the occurrence of intersex in the marine snail Littoraria scabra collected from two locations in Indonesia. The snails accumulated TBT when exposed to contaminated water and sediment/food at concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 ppb, with higher accumulation at 3 ppb. Measurement of intersex stage showed higher levels in snails from Bitung Coastal Waters compared to Amurang Bay, indicating greater TBT contamination. The study concludes that L. scabra can be used as a biomonitor for TBT contamination through measurement of accumulation and intersex occurrence.

his study investigated the microbial community in a full scale anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor system for oil-produced water treatment in summer and winter. The community structures of fungi and bacteria were analyzed through polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and Illumina high-throughput sequencing, respectively. Chemical oxygen demand effluent concentration achieved lower than 50 mg/L level after the system in both summer and winter, however, chemical oxygen demand removal rates after anaerobic baffled reactor treatment system were significant higher in summer than that in winter, which conformed to the microbial community diversity. Saccharomycotina, Fusarium, and Aspergillus were detected in both anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor during summer and winter. The fungal communities in anaerobic baffled reactor and sequencing batch reactor were shaped by seasons and treatment units, while there was no correlation between abundance of fungi and chemical oxygen demand removal rates. Compared to summer, the total amount of the dominant hydrocarbon degrading bacteria decreased by 10.2% in anaerobic baffled reactor, resulting in only around 23% of chemical oxygen demand was removed in winter. Although microbial community significantly varied in the three parallel sulfide reducing bacteria, the performance of these bioreactors had no significant difference between summer and winter.

The fluidized bed bioreactor generally achieved better PCE and organic matter removal than the complete mix reactors. Bacterial community analysis showed differences between reactors and operating periods.

suspended solids. Various studies have suggested that ozone attacks the bacterial cell surface, alters the permeability of the cell membrane and ultimately results in the leakage of cell

capacity for adaptation. Nitrification, a key step of the nitrogen cycle, is the sequential oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate. This process is catalysed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria
(AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), whose cooperation is needed to achieve complete nitrification. Although the nitrification process in WWTPs has been investigated in depth, the response of microbial communities are still a focus of considerable interest due to their high sensitivity to inhibitory compounds and environmental factors that results in repeated

Complexes of some lanthanide picrates (Ln3+ = Pr3+, Nd3+ and Dy3+) with benzo-18-crown-6 and 221-cryptand were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, and UV-Visible. Spectrophotometric methods, thermal analysis (TGA & DTG), melting point, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance. Also an in-vitro study on gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella and pseudomonas aeruginosa) was performed and the results were compared to those of the broad spectrum antibiotic Chloramphinicol. The benzo-18-crown-6 complexes have the general formula of [Ln.L.(Pic)2]Pic.nH2O , where; (Ln3+ = Pr3+, Nd3+, and Dy3+) , (L = Benzo-18-crown-6) , (Pic = Picrate anion) , (n = 1-2). In these complexes two picrate anions are coordinated to the metal ion through the phenolic oxygen and oxygen of the ortho nitro group, thus, the metal ions in these complexes have a coordination number of (10). The complexes of 221-cryptand have the general formula of [Ln.L.(Pic)]Pic2.nH2O where; (Ln3+ = Pr3+, Nd3+, and Dy3+), (L = 221-cryptand), (Pic = Picrate anion), (n = 1,2 or 7). In these complexes one picrate anion is coordinated to the metal ion, also through the phenolic oxygen and the oxygen from the ortho nitro group, thus the metal ions in the cryptand complexes have a coordination number of (9).
