Luis Gutierrez Soto was a Spanish architect born in Madrid in 1900. He studied architecture and graduated number one from the Madrid School of Architecture in 1923. He went on to have a prolific career, designing over 400 buildings throughout Spain. Some of his most notable works included the Air Ministry building in Madrid from 1940-1951, buildings for Juan March in Palma de Mallorca from 1940-1943, and the Narváez Cinema in Madrid in 1942. His style evolved from rationalism with expressionist touches early on to purely rationalist architecture after 1939. He was highly influential and received numerous honors, including becoming Dean of the Madrid College of Architects in 1957.

His childhood happens between the capital of Spain and El
Escorial (Madrid), where he studied bachillerato.
3. 1923
He graduated and finished (number one) his degree in the
Madrilenian School of Arquitecture in 1923.
4. 1925
He worked at the studio of Modesto López Otero, where he
stayed one year to later build his own studio.
Now independentient, he made his first work: a cottage house
at Ondarreta (San Sebastián).
Is one of the avant-garde architects of the generation of
1925.
5. 1926
He planned his first important building: the building of the
tobacco company, in which Fernando Cánovas del Castillo
colaborated with him.
6. 1929
After opening the first Club de Campo and winning a lot of
contests around Spain, he moved his studio to the cinema
Callao (Madrid, 1929) and began maturing as an architect.
His works are each time more numerous, standing out his
proyects for cinemas: Cine Barceló (Madrid), Cine la Rábida
(Huelva), etc.

7. 1935
Due family issues, he had to
move his studio to Velázquez

his most famous works: la Casa
del Conde de la Cimera, in
Almagro street (Madrid).
8. 1939
He stayed in the army until 1939, when he got his
commander grade.
Until 1939, Luis Gutierrez Soto’s architecture is
rationalist with a little touch of expressionism. From
that moment, he starts doing strictly rationalist
buildings.
9. 1940
It was in 1940 when he got the task from Madrid’s Air
Ministry from General Vigón. The ministry shows a clear
influence of Juan Herrera, due to the classic language used
in it. It was finished in 1951. In the next years, he did a
very large amount of projects, most of them built in
Madrid.
10. 1940-1943
One of his most singular buildings was built between 1940
and 1943 for Juan March in Palma de Mallorca. It was a
first magnitude building. He raised to floors of offices
and services next to a big patio and a palace, with
renacentist archery and Italian elements.
11. 1942
When the Spanish Civil War finished, he served as an Air
Army Captain and in 1942, he built his most important
building for the ministry: The Air Ministry Building in
Plaza de la Moncloa.
12. 1957
In 1957 he was chosen Dean of the architect college of
Madrid, becoming, a year later the president of the
Superior Council of the Architect Brotherhood. In this
period he is the Spanish representant of the U.I.A. too. He
kept working and raising his work until he died.
13. 1958
He was part of the Royal Academy of Bellas Artes of San
Fernando in 1958.
14. CURIOSITIES:
His work was influenced by Modesto López Otero and Secundino
Zuazo’s architecture.
He did some very personal buildings. He got to build more than 400
buildings.
As a young boy, he played in the first Real Madrid C.F team, where
he got nicknamed as “Pichichi”, like the mythic Athletic striker.
15. HIS TRIPS:
He travelled to Latin America and to the U.S and changed
his architecture to a more modern one.
He also travelled to Italy and Germany looking for
ideas and models.
The constant trips abroad got him to know the first works of
Le Corbusier, and also some other architect’s works that
influenced him, such as: Otto Wagner, Albrich, J. Hoffman,
Bruno Taut and Poelzig.
