• Wind energy is one of the cleanest forms of producing power
from renewable source
• Most of our electricity is used in buildings, and generating
the electricity on site reduces the need for transmission.
• This in turn reduces transmission losses as well as the
materials needed for wiring and poles
• Wind speed typically increases with height, as it is less
affected by trees and surrounding topography.
• Putting wind turbines on top of buildings—especially tall
buildings—should allow them to take advantage of height
without an expensive, full-size tower.
Wind energy is a form of solar energy.Wind energy (or wind
power) describes the process by which wind is used to generate
electricity. Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind
into mechanical power. A generator can convert mechanical
power into electricity.
WIND ENERGY
• The development of small wind turbines, quiet and specified for urban use, it is possible to harness wind
power for on-site energy generation or domestic production or agricultural districts.
• These turbines, reaching a maximum of 20 kW of power, can also find space on rooftops or in gardens, they
have relatively little visual impact and are able to produce energy even from modest wind flows.
• Moreover, in contrast to large wind turbines, such plants do not require major infrastructures for electricity
transmission from utilities and lend themselves to distributed generation of electricity.
• Small wind systems can be used both as stand-alone systems or as grid connected systems, and both can be
paired with other energy conversion systems, such as photovoltaics.
VAWT Advantages
No yaw mechanisms is needed.
A VAWT can be located nearer the ground, making it easier to maintain the moving parts.
VAWTs have lower wind startup speeds than typical HAWTs.
VAWTs may be built at locations where taller structures are prohibited.
VAWTs situated close to the ground can take advantage of locations where rooftops, mesas,
hilltops, ridgelines, and passes funnel the wind and increase wind velocity.
VAWT Disadvantages
Most VAWTs have on average a decreased efficiency than a common HAWT, mainly
because of the additional drag that they have as their blades rotate into the wind.
Versions that reduce drag produce more energy, especially those that funnel wind into the
collector area.
Having rotors located close to the ground where wind speeds are lower and cannot take
advantage of higher wind speeds above.
BUILDING AUGMENTED WIND TURBINES (BAWT)
Buildings rooftops can be an excellent location for wind turbines, both because the electric power generation is
close to the user and because they allow to take advantages of faster winds while reducing the cost of support
towers.
Turbines able to exploit the concentration of wind power due to the shape of the building are known as Building
Augmented Wind Turbines (BAWT) and their different configurations can be divided in three main groups:
1) BAWT close to the building, on the rooftop or along the sides;
2) BAWT between buildings;
3) BAWT inserted in air conducts through buildings.
BAWT Close to the Building
BAWT installations close to the building exploit the
acceleration of the air flow at the upper corners and the sides
of the facade of the building
The consequence of turbulence along the edges of the
building may possibly be mitigated by using a curved roof
(characterized by adherent, turbulence free air flow), or by
placing the turbines on poles or shafts in order to reach the
undisturbed air, or by creating spoilers and ailerons integrated
into the building envelope as in the case of Greenway Self Park
building of HOK in Chicago.
Average Weather in Chicago Illinois, United States
In Chicago, the summers are warm, humid, and wet; the winters are
freezing and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course
of the year, the temperature typically varies from 22°F to 83°F and is
rarely below 5°F or above 91°F.
Sun
The length of the day in Chicago varies significantly over the course of
the year. In 2020, the shortest day is December 21, with 9 hours, 8
minutes of daylight; the longest day is June 20, with 15 hours, 14
minutes of daylight.
Wind
The wind experienced at any given location is highly dependent
on local topography and other factors, and instantaneous wind
speed and direction vary more widely than hourly averages.
The average hourly wind speed in Chicago
experiences significant seasonal variation over the course of the
year.
The windier part of the year lasts for 7.2 months, from September
30 to May 5, with average wind speeds of more than 11.4 miles
per hour. The windiest day of the year is January 4, with an
average hourly wind speed of 14.4 miles per hour.
The calmer time of year lasts for 4.8 months, from May
5 to September 30. The calmest day of the year is August 2, with
an average hourly wind speed of 8.5 miles per hour.

Greenway Self-Park
The energy efficient Greenway Self-Park offers an oasis of sustainability within the commercial building-clad
forest of Clark and Kinzie street, Chicago.
HOK infused green strategies into the 33,500 square meters of the public vehicular garage in order to reduce
carbon footprints and energy consumption while instigating the first green parking system in Chicago.
The 11-storied Self-Park provides 24/7 parking facility for 900 vehicles and runs on a stand-alone energy
harvesting system.
Features
* Energy-generating wind turbines * Local and sustainable building materials
* A green roof and rainwater cisterns for irrigation * High-efficiency glass
* Recycling programs * Energy-efficient lighting
* Programs to encourage the use of energy efficient vehicles * Electric car charging stations
* Air quality initiatives * Tips for Greener Living in the lobbies
* Zipcar and I-Go car sharing vehicles
The design makes intelligent use of passive as well as active technologies for harnessing natural energy flows.
Ventilation, for example, is accomplished without a mechanical plant because the garage’s porous skin—a tapestry of
vertical cast-glass planks spaced at varying widths and overlaps—is at least 20 percent open on every level, meeting
local code requirements.
The client, Friedman Properties, saved several hundred
thousand dollars on air handlers and ducts, according to HOK, and will also
see savings on monthly utility costs.
Interior light fixtures are conventionally
powered, but shut off automatically in
response to ambient daylight.
• The southwest corner of the building houses an array of 12-paired
vertical turbines which rise slightly higher than the top and harvest
electrical energy by twizzling down the wind.
• The plastic turbine is divided into two columns of six units stacked
onto each other. Being designed and installed externally by Helix
Wind, it takes the full advantage of the windy city.
• The resultant energy illuminates the walls of the structure at night
and a notably extra amount of electricity adds up to the national
grid.
• The building’s dozen vertical-axis
wind turbines, which are stacked in
two double-helical columns along
the southwest corner, have a
specific, finite objective: Generate
enough power to cover the cost of
lighting the building exterior at
night, including the elegant turbine
system itself.
The vertical turbines are located on the southwest corner of the garage to take
full advantage of Chicago’s summer winds. The turbines will harvest the wind
to power the exterior wall lighting of the facility, as well as contribute excess
power to the city grid.
The 12 self-starting, lightweight aluminium S594 turbines, manufactured by
Helix Wind, were selected for the relatively low wind velocity (11.1 mph) at
which they start producing usable electricity.
Vertical-axis turbines can exploit wind from any direction at a wide range of
velocities, a strong bonus for harnessing the fickle breezes of urban micro-
environments.
The more familiar horizontal-axis turbines—which resemble propellers—
produce energy more efficiently, but they take up more space and are harder to
integrate architecturally.
Each turbine rotates independently
and is capable of producing up to
4.5kW of power.
The Greenway Self Park’s two-way
power meter allows the garage to give
and take, redirecting electricity back
to the Chicago utility grid whenever
there is more energy produced than
consumed.
HOK does well to give the turbines a prominent yet well-ordered presence by positioning them as two
continuous vertical stacks against a chamfered corner facing the intersection of West Kinzie and North
Clarke streets.
The chamfer not only increases the turbines’ wind exposure, it also enables them to visually anchor and
define the corner.
Each modular unit, measuring 16 feet high and 4 feet in diameter, is clipped in to a dedicated support
column, or “spine tube,” which transfers the turbine’s
weight to the garage’s precast concrete structure.
Up lights are mounted to the inside surface of the exposed
façade beams.
The turbines rotate like a “kinetic sculpture” in front
of a bright-yellow glass backdrop.
The Greenway Self Park’s other three corners are put
to work, containing stairs, elevators, and electrical
hardware and transferring rainwater harvested from the
building’s green roof down to street-level trees.
And in a final nod to sustainability, the garage is also
equipped with a dozen charging stations for electric cars.

• In opposition to the traditional enclosed parking with an umpteen expenditure
of artificial energy, HOK designed a naturally ventilated façade system,
treated with highly efficient breathable glass channels to eliminate the need
for mechanical ventilation.
• The glazed screen, which is comprised of a visually
layered fabric of breathable glass channels, shows the inner function of the
building.
• The bundle of sustainability measures also includes a cistern
rainwater collection system and a green roofing.
• Plug points and recharge stations are also provided to the earth-friendly
automobiles.
• Colourful banners and wayfinding systems intricately adorn the interiors to
make people aware of the impact of their behaviour pattern.
• An innovative approach of reminding drivers about their parking lots
through music videos is a special feature to appreciate.
• The Construction of the building was kept as green as possible. Precast and
pre-moulded concrete elements were put together like Legos in order to
minimize waste.
• All construction materials are collected within the 100-mile radius of the
construction site.
• The prime focus of the project was to offer more effective alternatives to
Chicago people, which are successfully carried through.
• As recognition of uniqueness, Greenway Self-Park earned an Award of
Excellence in The International Parking Institute Awards 2011 for the best
design in a parking facility.
• Currently, the building is pursuing LEED certification.

  • 3. • The development of small wind turbines, quiet and specified for urban use, it is possible to harness wind power for on-site energy generation or domestic production or agricultural districts. • These turbines, reaching a maximum of 20 kW of power, can also find space on rooftops or in gardens, they have relatively little visual impact and are able to produce energy even from modest wind flows. • Moreover, in contrast to large wind turbines, such plants do not require major infrastructures for electricity transmission from utilities and lend themselves to distributed generation of electricity. • Small wind systems can be used both as stand-alone systems or as grid connected systems, and both can be paired with other energy conversion systems, such as photovoltaics. VAWT Advantages No yaw mechanisms is needed. A VAWT can be located nearer the ground, making it easier to maintain the moving parts. VAWTs have lower wind startup speeds than typical HAWTs. VAWTs may be built at locations where taller structures are prohibited. VAWTs situated close to the ground can take advantage of locations where rooftops, mesas, hilltops, ridgelines, and passes funnel the wind and increase wind velocity. VAWT Disadvantages Most VAWTs have on average a decreased efficiency than a common HAWT, mainly because of the additional drag that they have as their blades rotate into the wind. Versions that reduce drag produce more energy, especially those that funnel wind into the collector area. Having rotors located close to the ground where wind speeds are lower and cannot take advantage of higher wind speeds above.
  • 4. BUILDING AUGMENTED WIND TURBINES (BAWT) Buildings rooftops can be an excellent location for wind turbines, both because the electric power generation is close to the user and because they allow to take advantages of faster winds while reducing the cost of support towers. Turbines able to exploit the concentration of wind power due to the shape of the building are known as Building Augmented Wind Turbines (BAWT) and their different configurations can be divided in three main groups: 1) BAWT close to the building, on the rooftop or along the sides; 2) BAWT between buildings; 3) BAWT inserted in air conducts through buildings. BAWT Close to the Building BAWT installations close to the building exploit the acceleration of the air flow at the upper corners and the sides of the facade of the building The consequence of turbulence along the edges of the building may possibly be mitigated by using a curved roof (characterized by adherent, turbulence free air flow), or by placing the turbines on poles or shafts in order to reach the undisturbed air, or by creating spoilers and ailerons integrated into the building envelope as in the case of Greenway Self Park building of HOK in Chicago.
  • 5. Average Weather in Chicago Illinois, United States In Chicago, the summers are warm, humid, and wet; the winters are freezing and windy; and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 22°F to 83°F and is rarely below 5°F or above 91°F. Sun The length of the day in Chicago varies significantly over the course of the year. In 2020, the shortest day is December 21, with 9 hours, 8 minutes of daylight; the longest day is June 20, with 15 hours, 14 minutes of daylight. Wind The wind experienced at any given location is highly dependent on local topography and other factors, and instantaneous wind speed and direction vary more widely than hourly averages. The average hourly wind speed in Chicago experiences significant seasonal variation over the course of the year. The windier part of the year lasts for 7.2 months, from September 30 to May 5, with average wind speeds of more than 11.4 miles per hour. The windiest day of the year is January 4, with an average hourly wind speed of 14.4 miles per hour. The calmer time of year lasts for 4.8 months, from May 5 to September 30. The calmest day of the year is August 2, with an average hourly wind speed of 8.5 miles per hour.
  • 6. Project Information: Architect : HOK Location : 60, West Kinzie Street, Chicago, IL, United States Project Year : 2010 Type: Transport + Infrastructure --- Parking Client : Friedman Properties Greenway Self-Park The energy efficient Greenway Self-Park offers an oasis of sustainability within the commercial building-clad forest of Clark and Kinzie street, Chicago. HOK infused green strategies into the 33,500 square meters of the public vehicular garage in order to reduce carbon footprints and energy consumption while instigating the first green parking system in Chicago. The 11-storied Self-Park provides 24/7 parking facility for 900 vehicles and runs on a stand-alone energy harvesting system. Features * Energy-generating wind turbines * Local and sustainable building materials * A green roof and rainwater cisterns for irrigation * High-efficiency glass * Recycling programs * Energy-efficient lighting * Programs to encourage the use of energy efficient vehicles * Electric car charging stations * Air quality initiatives * Tips for Greener Living in the lobbies * Zipcar and I-Go car sharing vehicles
  • 7. The design makes intelligent use of passive as well as active technologies for harnessing natural energy flows. Ventilation, for example, is accomplished without a mechanical plant because the garage’s porous skin—a tapestry of vertical cast-glass planks spaced at varying widths and overlaps—is at least 20 percent open on every level, meeting local code requirements. The client, Friedman Properties, saved several hundred thousand dollars on air handlers and ducts, according to HOK, and will also see savings on monthly utility costs. Interior light fixtures are conventionally powered, but shut off automatically in response to ambient daylight.
  • 8. • The southwest corner of the building houses an array of 12-paired vertical turbines which rise slightly higher than the top and harvest electrical energy by twizzling down the wind. • The plastic turbine is divided into two columns of six units stacked onto each other. Being designed and installed externally by Helix Wind, it takes the full advantage of the windy city. • The resultant energy illuminates the walls of the structure at night and a notably extra amount of electricity adds up to the national grid. • The building’s dozen vertical-axis wind turbines, which are stacked in two double-helical columns along the southwest corner, have a specific, finite objective: Generate enough power to cover the cost of lighting the building exterior at night, including the elegant turbine system itself.
  • 9. The vertical turbines are located on the southwest corner of the garage to take full advantage of Chicago’s summer winds. The turbines will harvest the wind to power the exterior wall lighting of the facility, as well as contribute excess power to the city grid. The 12 self-starting, lightweight aluminium S594 turbines, manufactured by Helix Wind, were selected for the relatively low wind velocity (11.1 mph) at which they start producing usable electricity. Vertical-axis turbines can exploit wind from any direction at a wide range of velocities, a strong bonus for harnessing the fickle breezes of urban micro- environments. The more familiar horizontal-axis turbines—which resemble propellers— produce energy more efficiently, but they take up more space and are harder to integrate architecturally. Each turbine rotates independently and is capable of producing up to 4.5kW of power. The Greenway Self Park’s two-way power meter allows the garage to give and take, redirecting electricity back to the Chicago utility grid whenever there is more energy produced than consumed.
  • 10. HOK does well to give the turbines a prominent yet well-ordered presence by positioning them as two continuous vertical stacks against a chamfered corner facing the intersection of West Kinzie and North Clarke streets. The chamfer not only increases the turbines’ wind exposure, it also enables them to visually anchor and define the corner. Each modular unit, measuring 16 feet high and 4 feet in diameter, is clipped in to a dedicated support column, or “spine tube,” which transfers the turbine’s weight to the garage’s precast concrete structure. Up lights are mounted to the inside surface of the exposed façade beams. The turbines rotate like a “kinetic sculpture” in front of a bright-yellow glass backdrop. The Greenway Self Park’s other three corners are put to work, containing stairs, elevators, and electrical hardware and transferring rainwater harvested from the building’s green roof down to street-level trees. And in a final nod to sustainability, the garage is also equipped with a dozen charging stations for electric cars.

  • 14. • In opposition to the traditional enclosed parking with an umpteen expenditure of artificial energy, HOK designed a naturally ventilated façade system, treated with highly efficient breathable glass channels to eliminate the need for mechanical ventilation. • The glazed screen, which is comprised of a visually layered fabric of breathable glass channels, shows the inner function of the building. • The bundle of sustainability measures also includes a cistern rainwater collection system and a green roofing.
  • 15. • Plug points and recharge stations are also provided to the earth-friendly automobiles. • Colourful banners and wayfinding systems intricately adorn the interiors to make people aware of the impact of their behaviour pattern. • An innovative approach of reminding drivers about their parking lots through music videos is a special feature to appreciate. • The Construction of the building was kept as green as possible. Precast and pre-moulded concrete elements were put together like Legos in order to minimize waste. • All construction materials are collected within the 100-mile radius of the construction site. • The prime focus of the project was to offer more effective alternatives to Chicago people, which are successfully carried through. • As recognition of uniqueness, Greenway Self-Park earned an Award of Excellence in The International Parking Institute Awards 2011 for the best design in a parking facility. • Currently, the building is pursuing LEED certification.
