This document discusses the concept of intelligent buildings, its principles and the benefits that it can bring to
organisations who adopt this philosophy within their real estate. Whilst most of its aspects can be replicated in different building types and industries, care should be taken of the context and purpose of the building. After all, although the purpose of buildings is the same regardless of industry – to enhance occupiers output – the actual
output differs per industry and, therefore, an intelligent building will mean something differently for an
educational establishment compared to an office block.
Within this document I focus on office buildings because in many respects they are one of the most complex and
fast changing environments that exist currently, but also because intelligent buildings is becoming a prime
discussion point either because of legislation (e.g. energy savings through the Carbon Reduction Commitment and Part L) or through increasing awareness of the impact that built assets have on the bottomline.
Care should be taken that the term “intelligence” should not only apply to the intelligence of the buildings
themselves through systems and ICT, but also in how far they are intelligently designed, built, run and
maintained.
Climate-responsive (passive) design is key to green buildings design and is based on the way a building moderates the climate for human good and well-being. Solar energy and wind energy can be effectively combined with climate-responsive design to produce electrical power by photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbines (WT). Today, urbanization and the increasingly dense populations of the world’s largest cities are pushing architects to reach for new heights in sustainable building skyscraper designs. A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be

Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.

5. INTRODUCTION
At the present time the debates and discussion are being held about
viability of wind. Wind turbines are cost effective and efficient if they
are placed on high poles, or integrated with a facility in combination
with any renewable energy source.

8. Locating between diffuser shaped buildings
In this case buildings are positioned in such a way that they act
as a diffuser for the wind turbine. Many tests were carried out
on horizontal axes wind turbines in ring shaped diffusers. This
combination results in a high aerodynamic efficiency compared
to other possibilities. The diffuser needs to be long in order to
generate an appreciable gain in aerodynamic efficiency. The
common shape of the diffuser augmented wind turbine is not
very suitable for the built environment. Because of that a
combination of “diffuser” and “ duct” is often applied.

Several designers have created building integrated wind turbines that
fuses magnificent sculpture-like facades to augment wind flows onto
turbines and generate more energy than is traditionally possible.
Simultaneously, these artistic wind generating facades overcome some
of the traditional problems with this type of dynamic facade, like noise
and vibration.
Many of these building integrated wind energy systems use the concept
of Wind Assisted Rotor Platform (WARP). These consist of small wind
turbines mounted to the exterior of an aerodynamically shaped
building. The saddle ridge shaped modules swirl around the building to
channel and amplify the flows of wind
15. Locating on the building rooftop
For locating on the roof it has to be kept in mind that the flow
separates at the leading roof edge and has an angle of about 30-40
degrees to the horizontal roof. For a Darrieus turbine this effect will
be less important. For common tip speeds the blades will experience
an almost horizontal flow. On a HAWT the tilt will have a larger
influence. The airfoils will stall, the aerodynamic efficiency will
decrease and the rotor load will be non-uniform. So the Darrieus
turbine seems preferable for locating on the roof of buildings.

new phenomena. But, earlier these glasses
came in different colors, gave uneasy feeling
to the residents.
Now transparent glass panels with
photovoltaic cells have been developed.
Thus such glass panels can replace our
orthodox glass panels with no transparency
what-so-ever and these produces electricity
too.
Such glass is not completely transparent.

method used by the transparent solar cell is somewhat
counterintuitive. In the most basic terms, solar PV cells capture the
photons and convert those pockets of light into electricity. By contrast,
a transparent cell would allow the light to pass directly through,
without capturing the photons.

structures to reduce the dependence of structures on fossil fuels.
The lesser use of fossil fuels means lesser carbon footprint of the

To harness wind energy and solar energy large farms have to be set up.
Such farms requires large surface area to be set up.
So, even though a little high initial investment is required to set up
such turbines and glass with PV cells, it reduces the overall energy cost
over a long period of time and also results to a greener planet.
