Jazz is one of few purely American art forms. Its creation came out of the southern United States and
the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American
communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents in
the development of jazz in the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came from a
combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European classical
music (Larson 37 38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz itself cannot be

rebuilds itself, improves, takes mistakes from the past, and makes sure to establish itself as something
new, distancing itself from its past faults. However, that is not always the case. The cultural revolution
of China, lasting from 1966 1976, was a revolution unlike many others; it resulted in the destruction of
traditional Chinese culture, as well as the reshaping of the Chinese political mentality.
Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, was the chief instigator of the
revolution. Much of his motivations stemmed from his poor relationships with other party leaders.
This tension with the other members was caused by the Great Leap Forward, an attempt by Mao to
increase agricultural and industrial production in China within a very short span of time. This resulted

The Hunger Games I chose to the modern mythology known as The Hunger Games a novel written by
Suzanne Collins and later adapted into a feature film. The novel was actually part of a trilogy The
Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The story begins by introducing you to our main
character Katniss Everdeen who lives in a world run by the Capitol where President Snow resides and
has enforced a form of martial law on all 13 districts. Every year the Capitol hosts their annual Hunger
Games which is a form of entertainment for the Capitol. Out of every district two tributes, one boy
and one girl will be picked to participate in the Hunger Games which is a battle to the death.
Whichever tribute manages to survive till the end will be rewarded by getting to stay in the capitol and
their district will be given more food and supplies. The reason Katniss becomes a part of the games is
because her little sister prim is chosen during the reaping to be the tribute so Katniss hearing her
sisters name volunteers as tribute to save her sisters life but she tries to win the games for her district
and to provide for them. The only problem is she finds it hard to murder the other tributes because
they are all so young and she doesn t see why she must kill them for the Capitols entertainment.

For my chosen text I found interest in Henry James s The Turn of the Screw. I discovered the Sherlock
Holmes, investigative and suspense type short story to be, right up my alley. That and the mention of
ghosts made me excited. I grew up in a haunted house and love ghost stories. I have tried to read
romance in the past and I have enjoyed it. Allowing for possibilities such as horror and the fantastic
while excluding psychoanalysis as an approach to the text. (Lee 2007) I soon fell in love, once I
combined romance and horror. That s what I love to read and write. I have not uncovered all the
depths to this piece of fiction, but I am looking forward to it.
The Turn of the of Screw was written in 1898 by Henry James. I found from my summarized readings,
the theories that would deepen my understanding of this short novel. They are the Psychoanalytic and
Feminist criticism theories. The plot centers around a young governess hired to watch over the niece
and nephew of an absent, wealthy businessman at his country estate in Essex. She falls in love with

At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home.
However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The
war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men
that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It
gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain
was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was
responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried.
The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous
Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more
than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle
under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Her only
brother, Edward, and Roland Leighton, friend of Edward, joined the British Army at the start of World
War I. Vera wanted to get involved in the war efforts. She served as a nurse and joined the Voluntary
Aid Detachment. Vera became engaged to Ronald in August of 1915. Unfortunately, four months after

(An analysis of the archetypes in Blake s Lamb and Tyger )
Tigers, they re fierce, independent, destructive, powerful, experienced and cunning. Lambs are the
polar opposite, considered gentle, pleasant, and innocent creatures. William Blake discusses both these
archetypes in his poems Lamb and Tyger . The poems are a discussion on the archetype of each
animal; when paired together they suggest our own society can be divided into these two groups of
people. The archetypes of Lamb and Tyger vividly contrast each other in way that allows us to
categorize ourselves into one of three groups. In the first of Blake s poems he discusses the archetype
of a lamb, the innocent and gentle of the world. At one point in Lamb it characterizes the lamb to
have, Softest clothing wooly bright, alluding to the pure and innocent nature of the lamb. Lambs with,
such a tender voice, that, make all the vales rejoice. These are the people of the world that don t have a
mean bone in their body. The lambs are kind and compassionate people that still retain some of that
child like innocence. Blake would think of them as the light in the world, pure and pleasing to others.
Tigers in the wild are at the top of the food chain. They are hardened, brutal, and seasoned creatures.
