John Locke s Second Treatise Of Civil Government
John Locke
Locke wrote the Second Treatise of Civil Government in 1690. It was written as a defense of the
overthrow of King James II and rise to power of William and Mary. This was known as the Glorious
Revolution.
As Locke references the laws of nature, he continues to say that they are something that men are
bound to by birth. Locke says that the laws of nature state that man is in a state also of equality,
meaning that all men are created equal in nature. Locke differentiates between the two by saying that
the laws of man are something that a man agrees to once he enters society while the laws of nature
apply to a man from birth.
Locke states that it is necessary for man to give up certain liberties under the laws of nature when he

He felt that the structure of society in France was unjust. He argued that laws would only work if they
were supported by the people that they applied to. This is also a time of societal and political unrest in
the United States, whom France allied with in the Revolutionary War.
The fundamental question is, How is a method of associating to be found which will defend and
protect using the power of all the person and property of each member and still enable each member
of the group to obey only himself and to remain as free as before? A way to reword this question may
be: How does a system that relies on dependence allow for individuals to preserve their own rights and
freedoms? Once people become dependent on each other, it is hard to become independent again. It
can be hard to maintain freedoms.
The social contract is that, The individual member alienates himself totally to the whole community
together with all his rights. The benefits come from being within a community. An individual becomes
equal with everyone in the society. The contract allows for individual rights within a society while
each individual participates

Nullarbor Plain Analysis
The Nullarbor Plain. The Nullarbor Plain is a karst landscape located on the border of South Australia
and Western Australia. It stretches across 200,000km squared. It is the Australia s largest karst
landscape and it is the world s largest piece of limestone. It is located 30.7678 degrees south and
128.9700 degrees east. The Nullarbor Plain is elevated at 64 metres above sea level. The name
Nullarbor comes from the Latin for no trees , but the landscape is covered in small hardy shrubs such
as bluebush that are drought resistant and salt tolerant. The Nullarbor Plain has an average yearly
rainfall of less than 250mm, so there are no streams on the plain. The small amount of rain that does
fall either evaporates or is lost to the limestone.

The Most Important Aspects Of Film Production In The Film...
Film Production
Movie making is telling a story with the best technology at your disposal. Tom Hanks. Film
production is one of the most important aspects of film, and the industry is one of the fastest growing
and largest grossing industries in the world. There are many different characteristics of film
production. Since the 1800 s, this business has been prevalent. Playing one of the most important roles
in the film industry. Film production has improved tremendously since its birth to its present state.
Film production has many different aspects and they all make up one of the most powerful industries
in the world.
The 1800 s were a time when the art of special effects was revolutionized. At first, they would use
motion toys to trick the eye into seeing things that were not really there. By 1905, there were the first
five cent movie theaters, or nickelodeons, that offered an inexpensive way for the public to watch
movies. These theaters caused the appeal of movies to skyrocket. The 1930 s era of film was
considered the golden age in which sound was first introduced to film. During the 1950 s, the film
industry took a huge turn with the invention of the television bringing home entertainment to ten
million people. After being in a gigantic drought because of the Vietnam War, the 1970 s brought a
resurgence of film to the United States. With the production of Jaws and Star Wars, the industry
exploded with new fans flocking in from all over the world ( History of Hollywood ).
During the 1980 s, the film industry was thought of as simple and quick entertainment. The 80s
brought films such as Batman, The Return of the Jedi, and Terminator ( History of Hollywood ). The
revolutionary special effects used in these films caused a drastic increase in the normal budget for
major films off that era. With the decline of the economy in the 90s box office revenues plummeted.
The invention of CD ROMs created a new way for people to enjoy films from home. Even though
VCRs were still very popular, but DVDs soon surpassed them and became the most popular way of
viewing film by 1997 ( History of Hollywood ).
The main reason film production has improved is because of technology. Technology has shaped

Essay On The Second Great Awakening
The Second Great Awakening was known as a religious revival that occurred throughout the United
States. This Awakening took place during the late eighteenth century and lasted through the middle of
the nineteenth century. However, this religious movement was greatly forced among the Northeast and
the Midwest. In addition to being a religious movement, other reforms took place socially including
women s and slaves rights, and contributions to education. Ultimately, a distinctive feature of religious
life during the Second Great Awakening was the Camp Meetings. Camp Meetings was a technical
developed by Minister James McGready. Preachers of every denomination attended and were
encouraged to preach about their experiences. George Baxter, president of Washington College in
Virginia, stated, I found Kentucky the most moral place I had ever been. Something extraordinary

Donald G. Matthews said, Was just what it was represented to me, a new entry into a new life, often to
the consternation of those upon whom a woman had been psychologically dependent. (Ch.6,131). This
statement implies that women now had a sense of self confidence and also was preceding in church
membership. More importantly these primary steps to women rights in the church provided
opportunities for women to participate in outside affairs such as: charitable events, local groups, and
missionary projects. On the Other Hand, the Second Great Awakening also contributed to Education.
Presbyterians and Congregationalists were most active in funding academics and colleges.
Furthermore, part of the energy converted by the revivals were directed towards efforts to provide
educational opportunities for women and blacks. Emily Willard s Troy Female Seminary (1821) and
Mary Lou s at Mt. Holyoke are the most frequently examples of female seminars in the

Activated Point-Of-Use Water Filters
Point of use water filters are utilized to remove contaminates immediately before direct consumption
for secondary exposure through cooking and cleaning. The media for these filters are chosen because
they have good permeability, durable, free of impurities and are insoluble in the water they are
filtering [18]. While filter media normally rely mechanical removal of particles, some medium works
to also remove contaminates by participating in redox reactions. Other forms of removal include
absorption and adsorption. Absorption is the where contaminates and liquid are soaked up like a
sponge into the media. Adsorption, the adhesion of a thin layer of particles to the filtration solid, of the
silver forms may take for the activated carbon and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These filters last a long time since they are easy to clean and reuse. When tested for removal of silver
ions, there was a 62.5% reduction of the 0.2 mg L 1 silver nitrate (Table 6). However, when the
concentration is increased or the water contaminate is silver nanoparticles, than the removal is not
high enough to produce a safe level of silver for drinking water (Figure 7C 8C). The silver removed
from the water was not observed on the surface with EDAX concluding that the silver forms are
trapped within the filter medium rather than on the ceramic surface (Figure

Analysis Of The Beatles Moulin Rouge !
Moulin Rouge! Analysis
All you need is love; love is all you need. These famous lyrics sung by The Beatles, is the central
theme of the narrative and resonates throughout the film, Moulin Rouge! A romantic tragedy with a
hint of Shakespearean forbidden love, Moulin Rouge is encapsulated from its tragic but touching
romance by melodic and ambient singing. Baz Luhrmann, known for having vibrant cinematography
and theatrical mise en scene, showcases his directing as shown by the choreography and art direction.
The narrative structure of the film is a cinematic fairy tale romance as if the audience was reading a
classic tale.
The film begins with a hauntingly beautiful voice sung by what seems to be the narrator (whom we
later find out to be Toulouse Lautrec). The skyline of Paris is silhouetted in a grainy type of sketch
drawing, resembling the artwork of a children s book. As the story progresses, we are pulled into this
universe as we observe this fantasy. The voice conveys the pain of a writer, Christian, who we learn,
has lost a lover, Satine. Christian is obviously in agony as he types away on his type writer. The
greatest thing you ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return, he types. This statement
commences the plot to fall into place and sets the theme of the narrative. Within the first few minutes,
the tone of the film is already established. There is a sense of tragedy and heartbreak just from the
melancholic score and dark lighting. The main

Summary Of Pam Muñoz s Echo
In the book Echo, by Pam Muñoz Ryan, she tells the story of several different people throughout
history. She writes of Eins, Zwei, and Drei whose souls become part of a harmonica to help them
escape a forest, only to be saved when they save someone else from the brink of death. Each character
is some sort of minority in his or her situation, an anti Hitler, epileptic, boy with a birthmark on his
face that making him not Hitler Standard , an orphan who lives in an orphanage that is going to
illegally put him to work and try to split apart him and his little brother, a little girl who is constantly
on the move and ends up going to a school where they split Mexicans and other children into separate
schools. The author uses several techniques all through the book all achieving different goals. She

In Friedrich s story, the author ends on a cliffhanger which raises the stakes because we don t know

scruff of the neck and marched him toward the train door, Friedrich imagined only snowy ballerinas

Sea Cows Extinction
Both the reading and lecture talk about the extinction of sea cows. The reading claims that there are
three reasons about the extinction of sea cows. Howevere the lecture argues that no evidence proves
those reasons that are correct. Thus, the lecture holds an opposite view of the reading. Firstly, the
professor mentions that sea cows have not been overhunted by people. In other words, sea cows were
pretty massive and enomous. But native Sebirian people were not very much. So people could not
hunt sea cows and they didn t hunt. So it s unlikely that native peole have been overhunt sea cows.
The point is the opposit of the belief in the reading that people caused sea cows deline since they have
been overhunt. Therefor, the professor refutes

Ancient Egyptian Medicine
Medical practices in Ancient Egypt had a great impact on the medical practices that are used today, in
fact, they were predestinates of those that we have today. This paper will give an extensive
background into the details of medicine and medical practices of physicians and healers in Ancient
Egypt, as well as compare some of those same practices with modern practices that we use in
medicine during this time period. The practices discussed in this paper include how the Ancient
Egyptians chose doctors, how the Egyptians diagnosed their patients, minor surgery practices that are
still used in modern medicine today, remedies and medicinal herbs that can be found in modern

Most doctors were sent to institutions called the House of Life. The institution was actually a section
of the temple that was not only used for the teaching of medical students, but was also the same space
where sacred papyri were written and copied. Only a select few were allowed in the House of Life,
therefore little is known about Ancient Egyptian medical training and whether or not examinations
were require, or even if the training was fully practical. However, in modern day America there are
more qualifications for physicians. Physicians in the United States must also complete medical school,
but this is a long and hard process. Pre medical students in the United States must go through an
extensive and competitive application and interview process before being accepted into medical

Ballistics Reflection Essay
Good Evening Mr. Yolen,
I just wanted to get in touch with you regarding a couple things that have been on my mind. Hopefully
you can help me out with my situations.
First and foremost I am extremely discouraged about the grade I have in your class right now as it
does not reflect at all what I have put in. Starting from the beginning of the year, I understand what I
did wrong on the Engineering Presentation. Where I am a little disappointed is where for example, on
the 4.2 Linear Motion homework, you gave me a C+ and out of the whole assignment you only
crossed out the word usually . Also, on the 4.2.2 Projectile Motion homework, you gave me an F
because I read one of the questions wrong even though I had written the correct answer on the paper
and I wrote down for the third question 1) Initial Velocity, 2) Firing Angle which I understand why it
was unnecessary to put it down, and 3) Gravity. For these 2 minuscule mistakes on this sheet, I do not
think it is an F quality homework. I have both of these sheets still on file and will take a picture of
them for your review because I truly feel like those should be changed but that is up to you in the end.
In regards to the Ballistics Quiz, I do not know what went wrong as I did very well with the classwork
you assigned but there is nothing I could do about that now.
Second, I am also quite upset about my results on the whole Ballistics Project. I wanted to inform you
that without even getting the assignment back, I feel

Business Skills By Selling As Many Products
The objective of the task was to develop our business skills by selling as many products as we could.
The college organised in cooperation with MyBnk, a charity who delivers financial education and
enterprise experiences directly in schools and youth organisations, a workshop activity called
Enterprise in a Box, where we get to be split in groups and sell as many seed bombs as we can within
a 5 weeks deadline. All in all, I think it was a very effective activity and a very beneficial experience
as we got we sit down and we make a plan, to talk about how and to whom we will be selling our
products, at what prices, what location would be best for us to sell them, decide who was going to be
the team leader, who would be in charge of the money, who would make the posters, how we will be
approaching our possible customers, etc. We were all trying our best to sale as many seed bombs as
we could. We were energetic and enthusiastic, without dominating one another about this task, as we
took it as a challenge and our competitiveness rose. Moreover, as I was the team leader, I would try to
motivate everyone by talking to them on a one to one basis, listen to what they have to say, respect
them and lastly, I would praise them for their ideas or work, depending on how good it is, and based
on my experience, everybody wants to know how they re doing and that is why I would try and give
them feedback when needed. Also, by talking to all of them, I make sure that no one feels that is

Saturation Point Lab
When ionic compounds are added to water dissociation can occur and the solid dissolves. But only a
certain amount of solid can be added to a volume of water before the solution becomes saturated and
no more solid will dissolve. This saturation point can be affected by a number of variables including
temperature.
Task
In pairs, conduct an experiment to determine the effect of temperature on the saturation point of
ammonium chloride or potassium nitrate. A proposed method for conducting the experiment is
outlined below. Prepare a practical report (1000 1500 words) that includes the following:
Introduction which explains bonding present in water molecules and ionic compounds and describes

Looking at the thermometer or water level in the test tube at an angle could give you incorrect
readings or amounts of the water required for the experiment. Having dirty equipment (something in
the test tube that makes it look fuller that it is, could be interference of measurement process. Less
water in a test tube would thus make you think you have added less of the ammonium chloride to
achieve the result. The Incorrect setting up of an instrument (thermometer touching the sides of the
test tube) could also be an example of systematic error.
Identification of a random error and an explanation of how this affects the results.
Random errors are always present in a measurement. It could be caused by changes in the readings of
the thermometer of level of the amount of water in the test tube. Even differences between two
observers of the same reading of the same test tube or thermometer (parallax error) could give
different observed measurements. Random errors as seen in our two trials show up as different results
for the same repeated measurement. This could be reduced by comparing multiple measurements and
by averaging the multiple measurements.
Suggestion of a possible improvement and explanation of how this will improve the accuracy or
precision of the

Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Analysis
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill the story of a Lioness
During the dawn of the new century, a young black woman taps on her microphone, surrounded by
everything from the romantic twang of a harp to the rustic beat of the timpani drum. Her hair twisted
in locks, envelopes her face the studio lights streaming on her face make her look like a lion,
courageous and proud of herself, her ideals and her vision. This isn t even the beginning. Lauryn Hill s
story starts in a township named after the Prince of Orange, in New Jersey where she grew up
listening to Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight. As a freshman in
high school Hill (now going by L. Boogie) started Tranzlator Crew with Pras Michel. Later, Wyclef
Jean replaced one of their original female singers and they renamed their band to the Fugees (inspired
by the word refugee an offensive term for Haitian Americans) and focused mostly on genre bending in
reggae, rock and soul.
During the early Fugees days Jean and Hill started dating. However, there was always a healthy

How Did The Parthenon Contribute To The Pantheon
The Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome have both made significant contributions in
architecture throughout the years from when they were built. They have also been important in helping
us understand the cultures of the Greeks and Romans during the times the two buildings were
constructed.
Right from its name it is fairly obvious that the Parthenon was built as a dedication to Athena, the
patron deity of Athens. The name Parthenon derives from one of Athena s epithets: Athena Parthenos.
Parthenon therefore means house of Parthenos . From the 4th century BCE, the whole building
acquired the name Parthenon. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Parthenon was both a temple and a treasury.
These two functions tremendously influenced its design. There is evidence that the temple was built to
measure in order to accommodate the chryselephantine statue of Athena by Pheidius. (M. Cartwright,
2012) The Greeks had a very extensive mythology which they took very seriously. Due to this,
building of the Parthenon was a form of gratitude to Athena for helping them win the war.
Features of the Parthenon are from both the Doric and Ionic orders. The Parthenon s aesthetic appeal
emanates from the refinement of many established norms of Greek architecture and ... Show more

The Limitations Of Contemporary Currency Hegemony And The...
Chapter 4 The Limitations of Contemporary Currency Hegemony and the Transition to Multipolarity
The prevailing presumption amongst currency scholars of the past century is that issuing a currency
that dominates global markets and trading is of overwhelming benefit, largely interpreted via the gains
made by the US as the issuer of the dollar. These benefits have been both political and economic in
nature, as discussed in the previous chapter. However, both domestic and external factors have begun
to detract from the dollar s pinnacle currency gains, and leads to questions of whether what was once
described as an exorbitant privilege is deteriorating to the extent that it is a burden. While assessing
the dollar s evolved role as a burden appears premature, nonetheless it appears the capacity of the US
to use the dollar as a mechanism for power is under threat. In fact, the US dollar may well be more
than just under threat . It is no longer able to exert influence like it once was, but relies on the benefits
it solidified for itself at the formation of the globes monetary structures. The leverage available to the
United States through the use of dollars is still greater than any rival currency, but it is not absolute as
it was decades before. While much has been written about the euro, and the dollars other potential
replacements at the pinnacle of the currency pyramid, what appears more likely is a leaderless
currency system as Cohen termed it, with no clear

The Influence Of Jazz Music
Jazz is one of few purely American art forms. Its creation came out of the southern United States and
the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American
communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents in
the development of jazz in the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came from a
combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European classical
music (Larson 37 38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz itself cannot be
done so plainly. Since its origin, jazz has continued to progress and branch out into a wide variety of
musical styles and genres. At its root, jazz is about the individual expression of the musician (Larson
2). John Coltrane was one of many musicians that used jazz as this medium. Through his early works
in the bebop and hard bop styles to free form and more spiritual styled music later in his career,
Coltrane pursued deeper expression from his music (Wikipedia). John Coltrane s upbringing and early
interest in music led to a successful career of highly innovative works that have left a lasting legacy
and influence on the jazz community.
John William Coltrane was born September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina. His family moved to
High Point, North Carolina shortly after his birth and would remain there throughout his childhood.

The Causes Of The Cultural Revolution Of China
Revolution: the deconstruction phase in the circle of societal reconstruction. In most cases, the society
rebuilds itself, improves, takes mistakes from the past, and makes sure to establish itself as something
new, distancing itself from its past faults. However, that is not always the case. The cultural revolution
of China, lasting from 1966 1976, was a revolution unlike many others; it resulted in the destruction of
traditional Chinese culture, as well as the reshaping of the Chinese political mentality.
Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, was the chief instigator of the
revolution. Much of his motivations stemmed from his poor relationships with other party leaders.
This tension with the other members was caused by the Great Leap Forward, an attempt by Mao to
increase agricultural and industrial production in China within a very short span of time. This resulted
in the overworking of farmers, a famine with an estimated 40 million deaths, and a disgrace for Mao
(Ramzy). Even his intended successor, Liu Shaoqi, who was groomed to perfection by Mao himself,
turned his back on him after the disastrous attempt at reforming the agricultural industry. However,

The Hunger Games I chose to the modern mythology known as The Hunger Games a novel written by
Suzanne Collins and later adapted into a feature film. The novel was actually part of a trilogy The
Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The story begins by introducing you to our main
character Katniss Everdeen who lives in a world run by the Capitol where President Snow resides and
has enforced a form of martial law on all 13 districts. Every year the Capitol hosts their annual Hunger
Games which is a form of entertainment for the Capitol. Out of every district two tributes, one boy
and one girl will be picked to participate in the Hunger Games which is a battle to the death.
Whichever tribute manages to survive till the end will be rewarded by getting to stay in the capitol and
their district will be given more food and supplies. The reason Katniss becomes a part of the games is
because her little sister prim is chosen during the reaping to be the tribute so Katniss hearing her
sisters name volunteers as tribute to save her sisters life but she tries to win the games for her district
and to provide for them. The only problem is she finds it hard to murder the other tributes because
they are all so young and she doesn t see why she must kill them for the Capitols entertainment.

Personal Statement On Health Management
Follow your passion; it will lead you to your purpose, Oprah Winfrey. My passion leading me to a
degree in healthcare management has been the love I have for my son. Becoming a single mother,
shortly before my son turned two years old, was life altering. Moving back in with my family,
realizing I had no income, and no longer the team effort from his father, was an indescribable sense of
failure as a parent. Obtaining a degree is my way to change that, and guarantee a future in which I will
be able to independently raise and provide for my son. A degree in healthcare management is a
stepping stone to a diverse array of opportunities. Healthcare is an expanding field, and explicitly,
healthcare management is growing faster than average. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My strengths are my self confidence, determination, organization, and ability to prioritize. Balancing
an overloaded school schedule, upwards of 24 credits in a semester, maintaining excellent grades,
raising a toddler, and volunteering are demonstrative of my greater fortes. In terms of weaknesses,
public speaking has always been difficult for me, as well as networking. I have branched outside of
my comfort zone, engaged in volunteer opportunities, student organizations, and clubs as an effort to
improve upon this. Lastly, my accomplishments include completing 95 credits within a two year time
span, which I will conclude at the end of this spring semester. Additionally, I have became a member
of the Sigma Alpha Phi honor/leadership society, the Golden Key Honor Society, and have recently
concluded being an Alternative Spring Break 2016 Co Leader, where we arranged a trip to build an
urban garden at an elementary school in Denver. What I have planned for the future includes
graduating with my undergraduate degree this coming December, which entails completing 12 credits
this summer, as well as 12 credits and a 150 hour internship in the Fall. Upon graduation I am hoping
to enter into a graduate program. Currently, I have been leaning more towards

Ballistic Fingerprinting In The Criminal Justice System
We live in a society where large parts of crimes such as; rape, assault, and burglary involve gun
violence. One of the newest controversy surrounding the topic of gun control is the procedure known
as ballistic fingerprinting. The impact of ballistic advancement has played a critical role in unraveling
new levels of solving crimes in the criminal justice system. Ballistic fingerprinting specifies to a set
strategy that depends exclusively on the imprints that a firearm leaves on a bullet to match it to the
gun used to commit the crime. Ballistic fingerprinting requires gun manufacturers to test fire the
firearms they produce and store pictures of the ballistic markings left on the cartridge cases in a

situation came out of the blue from the sniper themselves. On October 17, 2002 a mysterious caller
ensuring to be the sniper boasted that he was responsible for the murder of two women during the
robbery of a liquor store in Montgomery, Alabama, following a month. Examiners soon found that a
crime like the one depicted in the call had for sure occurred and the fingerprints and ballistic evidence
were available from the case. A magazine dropped at the crime scene confirmed the fingerprints of
Lee Boyd Malvo from previous arrest in Washington State. Shortly after the arrest record gave another
major lead, saying the name John Allen Muhammed. On October 22 they searched for the criminal
record database and found that Muhammad had registered a blue Chevy Caprice with the license plate
of NDA 21Z in New Jersey (The Beltway Snipers, Pt. 1.). That depiction was given to the news media
and shared which prompted to the catch of the two snipers. The case reached an end when John Allen
Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo were found sleeping in their vehicle. Records uncovered that
Muhammad was in possession of a Bushmaster .223 rifle. Ballistic testing was done on the weapon
found in the vehicle and this specific weapon was connected to eleven of the fourteen shootings that

Was Lizzie Borden A Serial Killer
Lizzie Borden is a very known serial killer but not by killing plenty of people, but only killing her
father and step
mother. Along with her time period, the late 1800 s, it was very unknown for women to
be killers and were seen as the weaker sex , which is also one of the reasons why Mrs. Borden was so
popular for this case. But how do you get away with a murder of your parents?
Lizzie Borden was born on July 19th, 1860 in Fall River, Massachusetts. First born,
Emma Borden, was very prepared at age of 6 to have a baby sister (Alice) and teach her how to love
and would protect her from anything. Unfortunately, Alice died at the age of 2 from hydrocephalus,
which is water in the brain. On Emma s 9th birthday, she was even more prepared to take ... Show

Suddenly, as Emma and Lizzie were in the early 30 s, they grew very resentful towards Abby and
moods started changing. Abby always tried being a loving mother and tried teaching them courtesy
and more, but the girls just wouldn t take it.
Lizzie did not make friends easily but to her, she didn t really need many; all she needed was her sister
who promised her birth
mother she would watch after her and she has. Many witnesses and others have
thought that Sarah had a bipolar disorder which is very generic and can be passed down by family
members. Sarah also had fits of anger which is also genetic like anger issues.
Emma , for a year and a half, left to go to Wheaton Female Seminary and was very nervous that this
absence was going to cause Abby to take over poor little Lizzie.
August 3, a day before the murder of Abby and Andrew, Lizzie was found at a drugstore and
unsuccessfully tried buying a poison. During this, Emma was out of town and Abby was in a finished
argument with Andrew.

Who Is Henry James The Turn Of The Screw
Henry James
The Turn of the Screw
For my chosen text I found interest in Henry James s The Turn of the Screw. I discovered the Sherlock
Holmes, investigative and suspense type short story to be, right up my alley. That and the mention of
ghosts made me excited. I grew up in a haunted house and love ghost stories. I have tried to read
romance in the past and I have enjoyed it. Allowing for possibilities such as horror and the fantastic
while excluding psychoanalysis as an approach to the text. (Lee 2007) I soon fell in love, once I
combined romance and horror. That s what I love to read and write. I have not uncovered all the
depths to this piece of fiction, but I am looking forward to it.
The Turn of the of Screw was written in 1898 by Henry James. I found from my summarized readings,
the theories that would deepen my understanding of this short novel. They are the Psychoanalytic and
Feminist criticism theories. The plot centers around a young governess hired to watch over the niece
and nephew of an absent, wealthy businessman at his country estate in Essex. She falls in love with
the children: a ten year old boy named Miles, and an eight year old girl named Flora. (Parkinson 1991)

Summary Of The Superfluous Woman By Vera Brittain
At the outbreak of World War One, British women were tied to a life of domesticity in the home.
However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The
war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men
that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It
gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain
was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was
responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried.
The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Vera Brittain, poet of The Superfluous
Woman, was a victim of the war. Like many other women, she felt that her options were now more
than ever limited due to her fiance dying in the war. Vera Brittain (1893 1970), born in Newcastle
under Lyme, was the daughter of middle class parents, Arthur Brittain and Edith Bervon. Her only
brother, Edward, and Roland Leighton, friend of Edward, joined the British Army at the start of World
War I. Vera wanted to get involved in the war efforts. She served as a nurse and joined the Voluntary
Aid Detachment. Vera became engaged to Ronald in August of 1915. Unfortunately, four months after
she accepted his proposal, Ronald passed away in the trenches. Moreover, her brother died only a few

Lamb And Tyger Archetypes Essay
Lambs and Tigers; Which are you?
(An analysis of the archetypes in Blake s Lamb and Tyger )
Tigers, they re fierce, independent, destructive, powerful, experienced and cunning. Lambs are the
polar opposite, considered gentle, pleasant, and innocent creatures. William Blake discusses both these
archetypes in his poems Lamb and Tyger . The poems are a discussion on the archetype of each
animal; when paired together they suggest our own society can be divided into these two groups of
people. The archetypes of Lamb and Tyger vividly contrast each other in way that allows us to
categorize ourselves into one of three groups. In the first of Blake s poems he discusses the archetype
of a lamb, the innocent and gentle of the world. At one point in Lamb it characterizes the lamb to
have, Softest clothing wooly bright, alluding to the pure and innocent nature of the lamb. Lambs with,
such a tender voice, that, make all the vales rejoice. These are the people of the world that don t have a
mean bone in their body. The lambs are kind and compassionate people that still retain some of that
child like innocence. Blake would think of them as the light in the world, pure and pleasing to others.

Tigers in the wild are at the top of the food chain. They are hardened, brutal, and seasoned creatures.
Blake depicts them as having, fearful symmetry, and the one who created a tiger to have, Burnt the fire
of thine eyes. Tigers could be compared to something as simple as a school bully or even up to a
ruthless dictator. Those who classify as a tiger are leaders and know how to get what they want. Often
using or abusing lambs in the process. This polarizing of people into the opposite spectrum from a
lamb doesn t always seem like a good fit though. The question is if you have to fall under one
category or the

The Ghost s Deception in Shakespeare s Hamlet Essay
The Ghost s Deception in Hamlet
The Ghost in Hamlet cleared out the event that Hamlet was uncertain of. The spirit clarified the death
of King Hamlet, and caused Hamlet to perform his evil deeds. The Ghost s request to avenge him
caused the death of Hamlet s family, friends, and eventually himself; therefore, the spirit can be
viewed as evil because it failed the four tests that was set by Lewes Lavater and the Church.
Lewes Lavater describes how the church determines if a ghost is evil or good. The first description is
good spirits terrify initially, but ultimately comfort. The spirit does not cause comfort to Hamlet.
Throughout the play, the Ghost causes trouble among the characters. According to Eleanor Prosser:
The Ghost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(John Hunt, pp. 35)
The source of all these problems is the Ghost. Therefore, the Ghost is evil because it has caused the
demise and tribulations of all these characters. The spirit s original intention was this and has fulfilled
his private revenge through Hamlet.
The second way to determine if a Ghost is evil is good spirits associate with light; evil with darkness.
When the Ghost appeared to Hamlet, the environment in the play was dark. The darkness is not only
associated with the environment but also to the Ghost s words about scripture.
But that is what we are warned the Devil will do: in order to disguise himself as an angel of light, he
will clothe his naked villany with a piece of scripture. Catholics and Protestants both agreed that the
mere repetition of Christian doctrine proved nothing. Both warned that we must be alert to the speaker
s ultimate purpose. (E. Prosser, pp. 137)
The Ghost said Leave her to heaven. (I,v, 93) By using scripture words, the spirit may be trying to
disguise himself to get Hamlet to perform his evil deed. If the Ghost was good, it will not use any

Essay about Race and Ethnicity in Social Sciences
Use of the Terms Race and Ethnicity in the Social Sciences
Defining identity can be complex and therefore we have to investigate the factors involved that make
us who we are and how we are seen by others, collectively or individually. Social scientists have to
consider the key elements which shape identity, the importance of social structures and agency
involved. The differences and/or similarities between us are the focus that categorise and label us in
society. Knowing who we are is important for many reasons including, social rights, obtaining a
passport, housing, health, employment, marriage, and over all, being able to ascertain who we are, and
belong.
The terms race and ethnicity are central features in the process of ... Show more content on

These subgroup identities highlight the relational factors which exist in categorising identity, each
requiring the other in order to make the comparison between ethnic differences, power and status.
Racialization and Ethnicization are preferred concepts as they contribute more to the idea that the
identities we adopt are part of a process and are not static, referring to a dynamic process rather than a
fixed state.
Categorisations from the 1970 s onwards, such as the definition of black or white , were too vague,
and failed to recognise the specific needs of other ethnic minorities. In order to monitor and measure
statistically the discrimination and underachievement of such groups, collecting ethnic statistics in
relation to race and ethnicity was necessary and these can be found in official government censuses.
Over the years it became apparent that categorisation of ethnic groups in the censuses rendered some
groups invisible (Questioning Identity, ch 4, p 137, section 4.1.1), for example Irish and Welsh. The
category of white has had to be expanded into subcategories as the white grouping classification
remained singular within the censuses until 2001, and ethnicization of whites was too generalised. (
Questioning Identity: Kath Woodward ch.4 p138 Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, 1991)
These amendments show us that there have been changes in ethnic representation and that there is
more awareness regarding ethnic identities and

Workplace Motivation In The Workplace
One skill that managers and leaders must be able to exhibit is the ability to motivate their employees.
Administrators in all fields must find ways to hire, retain, and motivate employees (Kroth, 2007).
Workplace motivation is a result of a set of internal and external forces that cause an employee to
choose an appropriate course of action and engage in certain behaviors (Newstrom, 2015). Motivation
also requires discovering and understanding employee drives and needs, since it originates within an
individual (Newstrom, 2015). The beginning stages of motivation stem from the manager and their
behaviors, and also the employee and their drive. As we know, people tend to develop certain
motivational drives as a product of the cultural environment in which they live (Newstrom, 2015).
Engstrom Auto mirror plant began to face a recession in productivity and employee motivation, while
also facing a downturn in the industrial field as well. The plant adopted the Scanlon Plan, the plan was
originated by Joseph Scanlon in the 1930 s in order to help small, distressed companies (Beers
Collins, 2008). Problems began to develop at Engstrom when the company began to redesign product
lines to incorporate new technology. The long production delays resulted in alienated customers, and
the plant manager lacked the proper knowledge in regards to the new technology. The plant manager
was let go and Ron Bent was hired to attempt a turnaround. Bent and Hayley had confidence in

per capita in the United States will be 28.3 minutes by 2015 (Anon., 2014). These numbers make this
industry more attractive than its other entertaining competitors. In the Video games Market the final

He felt that the structure of society in France was unjust. He argued that laws would only work if they were supported by the people that they applied to. This is also a time of societal and political unrest in the United States, whom France allied with in the Revolutionary War. The fundamental question is, How is a method of associating to be found which will defend and protect using the power of all the person and property of each member and still enable each member of the group to obey only himself and to remain as free as before? A way to reword this question may be: How does a system that relies on dependence allow for individuals to preserve their own rights and freedoms? Once people become dependent on each other, it is hard to become independent again. It can be hard to maintain freedoms. The social contract is that, The individual member alienates himself totally to the whole community together with all his rights. The benefits come from being within a community. An individual becomes equal with everyone in the society. The contract allows for individual rights within a society while each individual participates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The media for these filters are chosen because they have good permeability, durable, free of impurities and are insoluble in the water they are filtering [18]. While filter media normally rely mechanical removal of particles, some medium works to also remove contaminates by participating in redox reactions. A romantic tragedy with a hint of Shakespearean forbidden love, Moulin Rouge is encapsulated from its tragic but touching romance by melodic and ambient singing. Baz Luhrmann, known for having vibrant cinematography and theatrical mise en scene, showcases his directing as shown by the choreography and art direction. The narrative structure of the film is a cinematic fairy tale romance as if the audience was reading a classic tale. The film begins with a hauntingly beautiful voice sung by what seems to be the narrator (whom we later find out to be Toulouse Lautrec). The skyline of Paris is silhouetted in a grainy type of sketch drawing, resembling the artwork of a children s book. As the story progresses, we are pulled into this universe as we observe this fantasy. The voice conveys the pain of a writer, Christian, who we learn, has lost a lover, Satine. Christian is obviously in agony as he types away on his type writer. The greatest thing you ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return, he types. This statement commences the plot to fall into place and sets the theme of the narrative. Within the first few minutes, the tone of the film is already established. • 13. Ballistics Reflection Essay Good Evening Mr. Yolen, I just wanted to get in touch with you regarding a couple things that have been on my mind. Hopefully you can help me out with my situations. First and foremost I am extremely discouraged about the grade I have in your class right now as it does not reflect at all what I have put in. Starting from the beginning of the year, I understand what I did wrong on the Engineering Presentation. Where I am a little disappointed is where for example, on the 4.2 Linear Motion homework, you gave me a C+ and out of the whole assignment you only crossed out the word usually . Also, on the 4.2.2 Projectile Motion homework, you gave me an F because I read one of the questions wrong even though I had written the correct answer on the paper and I wrote down for the third question 1) Initial Velocity, 2) Firing Angle which I understand why it was unnecessary to put it down, and 3) Gravity. For these 2 minuscule mistakes on this sheet, I do not think it is an F quality homework. I have both of these sheets still on file and will take a picture of them for your review because I truly feel like those should be changed but that is up to you in the end. In regards to the Ballistics Quiz, I do not know what went wrong as I did very well with the classwork you assigned but there is nothing I could do about that now. Second, I am also quite upset about my results on the whole Ballistics Project. I wanted to inform you that without even getting the assignment back, I feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We were energetic and enthusiastic, without dominating one another about this task, as we took it as a challenge and our competitiveness rose. Moreover, as I was the team leader, I would try to motivate everyone by talking to them on a one to one basis, listen to what they have to say, respect them and lastly, I would praise them for their ideas or work, depending on how good it is, and based on my experience, everybody wants to know how they re doing and that is why I would try and give them feedback when needed. • 18. How Did The Parthenon Contribute To The Pantheon The Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome have both made significant contributions in architecture throughout the years from when they were built. They have also been important in helping us understand the cultures of the Greeks and Romans during the times the two buildings were constructed. Right from its name it is fairly obvious that the Parthenon was built as a dedication to Athena, the patron deity of Athens. The name Parthenon derives from one of Athena s epithets: Athena Parthenos. Parthenon therefore means house of Parthenos . From the 4th century BCE, the whole building acquired the name Parthenon. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Parthenon was both a temple and a treasury. These two functions tremendously influenced its design. There is evidence that the temple was built to measure in order to accommodate the chryselephantine statue of Athena by Pheidius. (M. Cartwright, 2012) The Greeks had a very extensive mythology which they took very seriously. Due to this, building of the Parthenon was a form of gratitude to Athena for helping them win the war. Chapter 4 The Limitations of Contemporary Currency Hegemony and the Transition to Multipolarity The prevailing presumption amongst currency scholars of the past century is that issuing a currency that dominates global markets and trading is of overwhelming benefit, largely interpreted via the gains made by the US as the issuer of the dollar. These benefits have been both political and economic in nature, as discussed in the previous chapter. However, both domestic and external factors have begun to detract from the dollar s pinnacle currency gains, and leads to questions of whether what was once described as an exorbitant privilege is deteriorating to the extent that it is a burden. While assessing the dollar s evolved role as a burden appears premature, nonetheless it appears the capacity of the US to use the dollar as a mechanism for power is under threat. In fact, the US dollar may well be more than just under threat . It is no longer able to exert influence like it once was, but relies on the benefits it solidified for itself at the formation of the globes monetary structures. The leverage available to the United States through the use of dollars is still greater than any rival currency, but it is not absolute as it was decades before. Its creation came out of the southern United States and the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents in the development of jazz in the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came from a combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European classical music (Larson 37 38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz itself cannot be done so plainly. Since its origin, jazz has continued to progress and branch out into a wide variety of musical styles and genres. At its root, jazz is about the individual expression of the musician (Larson 2). John Coltrane was one of many musicians that used jazz as this medium. Through his early works in the bebop and hard bop styles to free form and more spiritual styled music later in his career, Coltrane pursued deeper expression from his music (Wikipedia). John Coltrane s upbringing and early interest in music led to a successful career of highly innovative works that have left a lasting legacy and influence on the jazz community. In most cases, the society rebuilds itself, improves, takes mistakes from the past, and makes sure to establish itself as something new, distancing itself from its past faults. However, that is not always the case. The cultural revolution of China, lasting from 1966 1976, was a revolution unlike many others; it resulted in the destruction of traditional Chinese culture, as well as the reshaping of the Chinese political mentality. Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Communist Party of China, was the chief instigator of the revolution. Much of his motivations stemmed from his poor relationships with other party leaders. This tension with the other members was caused by the Great Leap Forward, an attempt by Mao to increase agricultural and industrial production in China within a very short span of time. This resulted in the overworking of farmers, a famine with an estimated 40 million deaths, and a disgrace for Mao (Ramzy). Even his intended successor, Liu Shaoqi, who was groomed to perfection by Mao himself, turned his back on him after the disastrous attempt at reforming the agricultural industry. However, due to Mao s well placed use of propaganda, he managed to climb back to power, establish a loyal base, and spread his ideology across China. However, as their men headed out to the battlefields, women had to keep the home front moving. The war created opportunities for women to join the workforce and to fill in the vacant jobs left by the men that went off to fight. The role of women in society became more than just cooking and cleaning. It gave them a more active role rather than passive. Women were essential to the war efforts, yet Britain was so fixated on the fact that there was an abundance of females in the country. The Great War was responsible for the death of several hundred thousand men, many of which were young and unmarried. The loss of these men left women single and/or widowed. Lambs are the polar opposite, considered gentle, pleasant, and innocent creatures. William Blake discusses both these archetypes in his poems Lamb and Tyger . The poems are a discussion on the archetype of each animal; when paired together they suggest our own society can be divided into these two groups of people. The archetypes of Lamb and Tyger vividly contrast each other in way that allows us to categorize ourselves into one of three groups. In the first of Blake s poems he discusses the archetype of a lamb, the innocent and gentle of the world. At one point in Lamb it characterizes the lamb to have, Softest clothing wooly bright, alluding to the pure and innocent nature of the lamb. Lambs with, such a tender voice, that, make all the vales rejoice. These are the people of the world that don t have a mean bone in their body. Categorisations from the 1970 s onwards, such as the definition of black or white , were too vague, and failed to recognise the specific needs of other ethnic minorities. In order to monitor and measure statistically the discrimination and underachievement of such groups, collecting ethnic statistics in relation to race and ethnicity was necessary and these can be found in official government censuses. Over the years it became apparent that categorisation of ethnic groups in the censuses rendered some groups invisible (Questioning Identity, ch 4, p 137, section 4.1.1), for example Irish and Welsh. The category of white has had to be expanded into subcategories as the white grouping classification remained singular within the censuses until 2001, and ethnicization of whites was too generalised. Workplace motivation is a result of a set of internal and external forces that cause an employee to choose an appropriate course of action and engage in certain behaviors (Newstrom, 2015). Motivation also requires discovering and understanding employee drives and needs, since it originates within an individual (Newstrom, 2015).
