Fan my Mother Gave me from her book, Outside History (1990) gives readers the first impression that
the poem is about the value of a fan that has been passed down to her. However, based on the title, the

Black Death, the plague spread from port to port and started to wipe out entire civilizations. All of

disease. Believed to have started in 1346 when the Mongol armies overtook the Genoese trading
outpost of Caffa on the Black Sea, over half the soldiers on the boat returned dead. The quickness of

Deforestation on the island of Madagascar, an island off of the coast of Africa, has caused major
destruction of habitat for species and a reduction in numbers of plants and trees. The island used to be
largely covered in dense forests which were home to many species of lemur and other animals. Now,
⅘ of the island is bare and uninhabitable for these animals. Deforestation on the island progresses at
around 150,000 to 200,000 hectares of forests cut down each year. Because of this many plants and
animals that only occur in the wild on Madagascar are endangered. The problem has effects on both
abiotic factors as well as the biotic factors, which include animals and plants. Some of the abiotic
things impacted include lakes and shorelines. One of the main causes for the deforestation is slash and
burn agriculture. In this technique, small areas of forest are cut down and everything is burned to clear
the area and introduce some nutrients into the ground. Then, rice is planted and grown for a few years.
After some time, all of the nutrients are depleted from the ground and rice cannot grow well anymore.
Because of this, farmers have to continuously cut down more and more forest. The reason that this is

Community Service Reflection
Community service is a very special and important activity when it comes to wanting to not only
better your community but also connect with the community in a way that is not possible in your
everyday life. For this semester I experimented with a different types of community service, it ranges
all the way from giving blood to helping out my local no kill animal shelter. Doing all of these things
really opened up my eyes, it made me realize how much our community needs our help, and if we do

History dies with every animal species that becomes extinct. For years the amount African Black
Rhinoceros has been dropping significantly; the problem may be unfixable at this point.
Unfortunately, many animals on earth are facing the same tragedy. These animals are primarily from a
time that no human kept records. They are living, breathing history that will die off because the
superior species could not protect them. In this picture by Gonzaga Manzo, the Black Rhinoceros is
being worked on in an auto shop by two stumped mechanics. They stare puzzled at the large animal,
not being able to see how to fix the problem. Extinction Can t be Fixed is printed in white letters in the
upper right corner, meaning that extinction cannot be reversed with tools found in a repair shop. In
fact, it cannot be reversed at all. Gonzaga Manzo, a Spanish artist, created this image as a part of a
campaign series for the World Wide Fund for Nature for species facing extreme extinction: the Black

variance with each other in the novel, The Great Gatsby. Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the narrative is
