Alternative to Incarceration Essay
December 5, 2001
Alternatives to incarceration
Ever since the first prison opened in the United States in 1790, incarceration has been the center of the
nation s criminal justice system. Over this 200 year period many creative alternatives to incarceration
have been tried, and many at a much lower cost than imprisonment. It wasn t until the late 1980 s
when our criminal justice systems across the country began experiencing a problem with
overcrowding of facilities. This problem forced lawmakers to develop new options for sentencing
criminal offenders. Unlike jail or prisons, which create an expensive cycle of violence and crime,
these alternatives actually prevent violence and strengthen communities.

Another commonly used alternative is house arrest and confinement. This sanction restricts an
individual to his or her residence for specific periods of time; in most house arrest programs offenders
are allowed to leave their homes only for employment, medical needs, or mandated assignments such
as community service or school. The emphasis of this program is on confinement, and the supervising
officers role is to ensure that the offender stays confined at home. There are three different levels of
home confinement, each with a different degree of restricted freedom. The first is curfew which
requires offenders to be in their residence during limited, specific hours, generally at night. The
offender s movements outside of the curfew hours are unregulated. The second is home detention that
requires offenders to remain at home at all times except for employment, education, treatment, or
other pre approved activities. This program may be with the assisted with electronic monitoring. The
last level is home incarceration. This program requires offenders to remain at home at all times, with
very limited exceptions for religious or medical purposes. At a minimum, offenders are subject to
random contacts across all hours covered by the condition in order to verify compliance.
Electronic monitoring is another widely used form of surveillance in which an electronic device is
attached to an offender s body, warning that person that

Victorian Women In Dracula
Bram Stoker presents Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray Harker as the perfect victorian women. Full of
innocence, chaste, and elegance. Prior to the arrival of Dracula, the audience sees Lucy as a as a
voluptuous, beautiful woman. Lucy has three men asking for her hand in marriage. Writing to Mina,
Lucy complains, Why can t they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this
trouble? (81). This shows she knows she cannot say those words because it is frowned upon in
Victorian culture, but it does not stop her from mentally crossing rigid social boundary. Lucy is
portrayed by her physical beauty and flirtatiousness. All of her three suitors are enchanted by her
beauty and words. During these letter correspondents, Mina shows ... Show more content on

Working as schoolmistress and takes an interest in her husband s work, which is unheard of during
that time. Mina Murray also shows unyielding devotion to Jonathan for when she hears from him,
goes to his bedside immediately to nurse him. The innocence, chaste, and purity slowly diminishes as
Dracula makes his influence on both of the girls making them voluptuous beings like his three brides.
As Lucy succumbs to illness she becomes more and more unlike a perfect Victorian woman prior to
Dracula s impact on her. Although she becomes weaker, paler, and closer to death, the woman
becomes a wantonness being who her suitors admire and are afraid of. Once was an embodiment of a
perfect Victorian woman is now a monster. As she turns into a vampire, she becomes bolder and
volomptuous. The un dead Lucy proclaims boldly, Come to me, Arthur. Leave these others and come
to me. My arms are hungry for you. Come, and we can rest together. Come, my husband, come! (289).
Van Helsing, Quincey Morris, John Seward, and Arthur seeing her as a threat to society must return
her to her purer state. Van Helsing believes it s best if Arthur himself does the job of getting rid of the
demon. Once Arthur runs the stake through Lucy s heart, the

Reproductive Rights Of Women In The United States
The ability for women from all walks of life to have access to affordable and safe healthcare including
abortion is something I m passionate about. It is appalling to me as both a woman and as a citizen of
the United States that women have had their reproductive choices made for them or extremely limited
by legislatures, especially when these decisions seem to come from a place of ignorance. It s been
incredibly disheartening to watch the reproductive rights of women within the United States be
chipped away and restricted over the past decade by state and federal legislatures. The solutions I
would propose lie primarily in education as it is education that combats ignorance and misinformation.
In this particular case, it would be better sex

Pablo Picasso s The Rape Of The Sabine Women
The Rape of the Sabine Women Pablo Picasso s art piece The Rape of the Sabine Women is an art
executed from the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The artwork primarily captures the conflict between
the west and the east and more so the prevailing threat and acts of inhumanity in the third world war
era. The first painting in the series dated 24 October 1962 (Picasso, Beechey and Stephens 76) took
place just ten days after the recording of Soviet missiles by American planes in Cuba. The art,
therefore, captures the great annihilation of citizens humanity during the third world war. It is by the
look of the painting that one gets a clear picture of the distress undergone by women during the war
period. This discussion seeks to explore the art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The art in a way resembles some other paintings in the same gallery found in the MFA museum. The
art known as Rape of Sabine Women by Nicolas Poussin is a good example of similar artwork that
also addresses the issue of war and terror during that time. Another art that resembles Picasso s is The
Intervention of the Sabine Women by Jacques Louis David. Sympathy is introduced in the minds of
people who view them. The art piece is one of the most honored in the MFA collections. It has gone a
step further in motivating the museum body to collect related art pieces that fit the gallery on The
Rape of the Sabine Women. The fact that the artwork is based on the Cuban Missile Crisis creates
remembrance of the pivotal times the nation was in. Many people, who engage themselves in the
activity of celebrating the Cuban anniversary, gain an excellent interpretation of the art since it is a
primary reminder of Cuba s

A Humanistic Counselling Approach For Self Knowledge And...
Introduction As a humanistic counselling approach, person centred therapy emphasises the potential
for self knowledge and personal growth (Corey, 2009). It views the deviation from one s inherent
goodness as a source of psychological problems, in turn aiming to increase one s self awareness to
help them direct their life in more satisfying ways (Cooper, 2003). With the person centred approach
being more an attitude than a set of definitive techniques, a better understanding of its process is
formed through connecting theory and practice. As such, this case study aims to apply the person
centred approach to a fictional client based around Lester Burnham from American Beauty (Cohen,
Jinks Mendes, 1999). Initially, an introduction to the client will be presented, followed by the
assumptions, assessment, and goals formed when working with him from a person centred
perspective. Several hypothetical helping sessions will then be presented. The Presenting Problem
Lester is a 40 year old man referred to me for counselling by his doctor. He is currently married and
lives with his wife, Carolyn, and their 16 year old daughter Jane. He is employed as a fast food
attendant (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). At the initial examination Lester dresses untidily and
unshaven, and avoids eye contact. Lester reports an overall feeling of unhappiness (Cohen, Jinks
Mendes, 1999). He stated that he has become reckless and self destructive and worried about some of
his recent life decisions.

War At The Best, Is Horrible, And This War Of Ours
David Leathers Professor Blanc US History 13 November 2014 Civil Warfare War at the best, is
terrible, and this war of ours, in its magnitude and in its duration, is one of the most terrible (Lincoln).
This war of ours is the American Civil War 1861 1865. It is one of the most significant wars ever
fought in American History. Many Americans lost their lives, some defending freedom, and others
defending the Union. The warfare was a major contributor to the casualties suffered during this
bloodbath. To fully understand this warfare, one must understand the individual factors involved and
how they affected the warfare. The five factors are: military strategy, worldview paradigm, weapons
and supplies, terrain, and climate. Military Strategy is important to understand because it is the way
that warfare is carried out. A historian named Kelly Snell writes, Old world tactics and training were
inefficient due to modern weaponry (Snell). There was pressure for a transition to new military
strategy because of the new weapons. The tactics used before the civil war are often referred to as
antebellum. Antebellum means existing before a war (Antebellum). Advances in weaponry caused for
a change of thought on how to approach warfare. All of the military thinking of the day was
influenced by Napoleon (Snell). This war therefore was set up for groundbreaking improvements in
strategy. Heidler explains how the Union was trying preserve its unity with the south, so in order to

neon Essay
Did you know that neon is a Greek word that means quot;new quot;? Neon is the element that I am
most interested in. I chose to do neon because I found out what many uses it has in our daily life.
Neon is the element that allows you to watch TV. Without neon we would never see the cool flashing
signs outside of diners and bars. In my essay I am going to tell you about neon and its many uses.
First, I m going to tell you about the history and uses of neon. Neon was discovered by Sir William
Ramsay, a Scottish chemist, and Morris M. Travers, an English chemist, shortly after their discovery
of the element krypton in 1898. Neon is one of the most amusing elements used today. Neon mixed

Neon is found in the atmosphere. Neon is 0.002% of the atmosphere. Also, stars produce neon during
the later stages of nuclear fusion.
All there is to talk about neon now is about how it integrates into our life. To show you the integration
in our society I will demonstrate a situation in which neon comes into play. Imagine walking around in
Las Vegas with your friends looking to have a good time before your business meeting the next day.
You look up and see giant signs that flash and move around advertising casinos and restaurants. Those
signs are discharge tubes holding the active ingredients of our friend neon and his buddy mercury. You
decide to walk into the casino with the biggest, coolest sign that says quot;MGM quot;. You walk into
the casino wondering what to do first, so you walk over to the nearest craps table. You play craps for a
couple hours and decide to cash in and go out to eat with all the money you won. You walk into a
sports bar to get a drink and you notice a TV with the Lakers game on. You look up at the TV and
notice they are losing 84 to 36. The television has a tube in it that holds neon to project things onto the
glass screen you see, without neon you wouldn t be able to watch any of your favorite shows. When
you are finished eating your friends ask if you want to go to the Smithsonian observation museum
about 10 miles away from downtown Las Vegas. You agree and pile into your rented Mercedes Benz
SRX. As your driving on the

The Four Stages Of The Cell Cycle
The cell cycle has four main stages. The cell cycle is the regular pattern of growth. The four stages
consist of Gap 1 (G1), Synthesis (S), Gap 2 (G2), and Mitosis (M). Gap 1, consists of a cell that
carries its normal functions. Calls also increase in size, and the organelles increase in number. A cell
will spend the most time in this phase. But it also depends on the cell type to see how long it will
spend in this phase. During this phase the cell has to pass a critical checkpoint before it can continue
into the (S) stage, also called the Synthesis stage. It would be dangerous for a cell to keep dividing if
the certain conditions were not met. The cells in this stage also need signals from the other cells to tell
the if division is needed. Now the next stage is the Synthesis stage. During this phase the cell makes a
copy of it s nuclear DNA. By the end of the (S) phase DNA appears grainy in photos and the cell
nucleus contains two complete sets of DNA. Gap 2, is the third stage of the cell cycle. The cells
continue doing there thing and more growth occurs. This phase is like the checkpoint, everything in
the cell has to be going right for the cell to be able to enter mitosis. Mitosis is the fourth stage of the
cell cycle. It includes two phases mitosis and cytokinesis. Mitosis is the division of the cell s nucleus
and all it s contents. Cytokinesis is the process that divides the cell s cytoplasm. The stages of the cell
cycle and the proteins are all alike in all

Maurice Wilkins Examples
Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins were all examples of scientists
that came together to help form the detailed understanding of the structure of DNA that human
civilization has today. The question that was solved by their work was, how do living organisms pass
on traits to their offspring? The discovery was like a puzzle that was put together over time. Different
scientists over the ages added a piece here and there. An example is Gregor Mendel. He worked with
plants and observed the traits that were passed down from the parents to the offspring. By the 1950s,
biologists found that chromosomes contain proteins along with DNA. This made scientists wonder
how DNA could hold all the information needed to create

These ideas are the main reason on Marx s conclusion on man s nature, which is incredibly important
to understand the theory of the individual. Man s nature is not abstract; a characteristic of a certain
individual. Actually it is the totally of all the social relations (Marx). In this quote the idea of man s
nature that Marx has represents a revolutionary reconstruction that would have to happen in the world
and the importance of education in the individual.
Marx s studies the theory of the individual and mainly focus in three areas, which are the complete
development of the individual, the problems of alienation and freedom.
Labour for the worker is something external not belonging to his nature...in his labour he does not
affirm himself, but denies himself, feels not happy, but unhappy, does not develop freely his physical
and spiritual energy but wears out his physical nature and destroys his spiritual force. This is why the
worker feels that he is himself only outside of working hours in the process of labour he feels he is
estranged from himself. He is himself when he is not working, and when he works he is already not
himself. (Marx)
Marx explains the idea in how the labor workers do not own they own work. Therefore, alienation is a
product from labor and it is used between capitalist societies to alienate the product of a man s labor
and his social nature. The bourgeois society will take the

Ulitarianism And Euthanasia
Euthanasia is the act of killing hopelessly sick or injured people or animals in a painless way to put
them out of their misery. There are five types of euthanasia, but two types are voluntary and
involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is when a person requests to end their life due to a painful illness
with no hope of survival, and involuntary euthanasia is the person dying requests a faster death
through infancy or capital punishment. Two kinds of euthanasia in particular are suicide; when you
take your own life without help, and assisted suicide; when you have a terminal disease and cannot
commit suicide, so you allow someone else to do it for you. The interesting thing about euthanasia is
that it is only legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, and Luxembourg. Although euthanasia is
not legal in the following places, assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Canada, and
in the US states of Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Vermont, Montana, Washington DC, and
California. The ethical theory that agrees with suicide is Ulitarianism, while Kantianism would be
debatable.
Jeremy Bentham states we should create the most happiness and pleasure and reduce suffering and
unhappiness through the ethical theory of Ulitarianism. Through the practice of euthanasia, if a person
requests to be put out of their misery and their family consents, it would be beneficial to the person
and their family to not see them suffer anymore and know they are in a better place. For

Self Change Program (Behaviour modification) Essay
Behaviour Modification
A Self Control Program for Smoking Cessation
Christine Chambers
Trent University
Introduction
The behaviour modified for this self directed behaviour change project is smoking. Smoking was
selected as the behaviour I wish to change because it is known that tobacco use is the leading cause of
premature, preventable death and disease (Edwards, Bondy, Callaghan, Mann, 2014). Smoking is a
behaviour that has been recently initiated; I started smoking occasionally in August 2013 (one
cigarette a few times a week) and intended to buy only the one pack. However over a period of several
months, my smoking has increased. The rationale for this choosing this target behaviour is that it is

Self Directed Intervention Method
The initial phase of the self directed intervention consisted of baseline measurement of smoking
behaviour. Baseline data was collected for a period of 7 weeks and a functional assessment was
completed during this time. Upon starting the intervention phase, the final target behaviour of
smoking cessation was broken down into smaller, short term objectives lasting 2 weeks each.
Functional assessment revealed that smoking behaviour was often preceded by a busy or stressful
environment (antecedent) and that mood and/or anxiety levels functioned as establishing operations
for smoking behaviour (smoking was often preceded by higher anxiety rating or lower mood rating).
As well, the functional assessment revealed that smoking behaviour was maintained by positive
sensory stimulation (the experience of a slight buzz when smoking) and by temporary
escape/distraction from a demanding environment. Based on assessment results, the intervention phase
consisted of a reinforcement schedule that provided rewards for changing criterion levels for smoking
behaviour. The initial criterion was determined by calculating the mean number of cigarettes smoked
per day during the baseline period. Each criterion level (or short term objective) lasted for a two week
period before changing the criterion level again. The timeline for baseline, intervention, maintenance
phases are outlined in table 1. The initial intervention selected was a

Jane Austen was born in December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England. Jane was the seventh
of eight children and the second of two girls. Growing up Jane and her older sister, Cassandra attended
Abby s boarding school, their only education outside of their family.( ) As a result, she became ever

Austen s notebooks were filled with poems and stories that she would soon use in the fast approaching
future. Many of her most famous stories are Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Sense
and Sensibility. Within the stories such as in Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen satirizes values and
functioning of the British Society in several ways through her characters. Firstly, she attacks the
numerous social limitations put on women and their views on marriage resulting because of these
restrictions during that time ( enotes ). Jane Austen often used her writings to depict her viewpoint of
the British Social Class System. British Class System is a system in which a person belongs to the

Automatic Transmission Essay
ABSTRACT
The transmission in a car which works automatically depending on the vehicle speed and engine speed
is called as automatic transmission while as a manual transmission is the one there is a manual clutch
pedal used while changing gears that allow the driver to change the gears as per driving needs. In a
country like India, automatic transmission gives only a driving pleasure to the driver in heavy traffic
as there is no need of changing gears because of the fact that it lacks a clutch paddle system which
gives complete rest to one leg of the driver. Manual transmission fails to provide such an added
benefit to drivers. But in developing countries, the idea of an automatic transmission is not wise and

For the selection of reverse mode , the driver must come to a complete stop, depress the shift lock
button and select reverse. Severe damage may be caused to the transmission if the car is not made to
come to a complete stop. Most of the modern day automatic transmissions have a safety mechanism in
place, which prevents putting the car in reverse when the vehicle is moving forward.
3. Neutral / No gear (N)
This mode is almost same as in manual cars where it allows the vehicle to coast freely under its own
weight and gain momentum without the motive force from the engine. 4. Drive (D)
This mode of the transmission is to engage the full range of available gear which allows the vehicle to
move forward and accelerate through the range of gears. In this mode the gear changes automatically
as the cars gains speed. The number of gear ratios within the transmission depends on the model, but
initially they ranged from three to four and five speeds gears. Six speed automatic transmissions are
the most common in cars and trucks. However, seven speed automatics are also being available in
some high performance production luxury cars as are eight speed

Hispanics have changed over his time in the United States, and if it has gotten worse or better. His
overall view was that the current political and social environment can sometimes be harsh right now to
Latinos, and in his opinion discrimination towards them has gotten worse. He said, I think there s an

more than likely he would have. He was not illegal though. He was a legal resident that could do much
of what a citizen could, but he could not vote. When he and his brothers came from El Salvador, they

He did not face any problems there. Then they moved to Manhattan into a predominately black and

Schizophreni A Mental Disorder
20 October 2015
Schizophrenia can be managed successfully with proper interventions.
When someone says, That person over there is a schizophrenic. Do we truly know what it means or do
we just assume they are so called crazy ? There is a stigma put on someone that has been diagnosed
with this disease. The term has been used very loosely over the years without people actually knowing
the background behind the term as well as the definition of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is in a
mental disorder classification on its own.
Schizophrenia is said to possibly date as far back as Egyptian times. Although it may date back to
ancient times, the first belief was that the person was possessed by a demon or was being punished for
not obeying the God s wishes. Schizophrenia has not always had that name. The term used before
Eugene Bleuber renamed it was called dementia praecox. Arnold Pick was actually the first one to
name the disorder dementia praecox but was not properly given credit for it. Emil Kraepelin was the
publisher of several psychology books and was given credit for naming it dementia praecox. It became
known as schizophrenia after Eugene Bleuber reviewed Kraepelin work and thought that based on the
symptoms of the disorder that schizophrenia is a better fit.

was married to Kasturba Makanji when they were both thirteen through an arranged marriage. Gandhi
worked greatly with the civil rights movement. He was once thrown off a train for being Indian, and
instead of lashing out, decided to react in a civil and non violent manner. From then on, he vowed to

Wound Infection
2.1.1. Most common pathogenic strains that cause wound infection
The most common pathogenic strains that cause wound infection is Staphylococcus aureus (35%),
Escherichia coli (15%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13%) and other bacteria (37%) (Amit Kumar Gupta
et al., 2015). In another study, Staphylococcus aureus has been reported as the major cause of wound
infection with (24.2%), followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (21.4 %), Escherichia coli (14.8 %) and
another different organism (39.6 %) (Jyoti Sangwan et al., 2016). Staphylococcus aureus (Methicillin

Question of the Week: Why did you choose this book? Explain.
I decided to choose A Thousand Acres because the book seemed interesting and could have potential
with it being a modern version of Shakespeare s King Lear, but with the setting and plot around an
Iowa farm. And even though the idea might seem strange on paper, it really depends on the execution
(like Chains proved last month).

What I mean is that the idea is about someone is having an amazing life, but serious or bad things
happen to that person which could lead to emotional problems or, in King Lear s case, insanity. Now,
since I am halfway through A Thousand Acres, I can say there are some hints of King Lear. For
example, one of our characters, named Ginny, is showing signs of a mental disorder, something along
the lines of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and in the beginning, she seems happy and cheery,
meaning that something had to happen for her to get emotional scars. But if we are looking for a
genre, I would say either realistic fiction or domestic realism (which is the genre about 19th century
novels popular with women, which the book kind of is), due to the fact that things like PTSD or abuse
can happen, and it isn t just in the Lifetime movie of the week or in a nightmare, things like this
happen in real life. And the only people you wouldn t acknowledge that fact are people under the age
of 13 and rich people who have been pampered so much that they are unaware of the live of people

Mercantilism Essay
Mercantilism
Mercantilism is the economic theory that a nation s prosperity depends on its supply of gold and
silver; that the total volume of trade is unchangeable. This theory suggests that the government should
play an active role in the economy by encouraging exports and discouraging imports, especially
through the use of tariffs. Spain and England used the mercantile system to benefit the mother
countries. The mercantile system had special regulations, which usually extracted some sort of
reaction from the colonies. If necessary, the policies would be changed to better suit the mother
country.
The favorable balance of trade was upheld through certain regulations.

Also, theoretically, the colonies were designed to be economically complementary to Spain.
Manufacturing was forbidden in certain colonies to keep the market open for imports. The economic
health of the colony was always a secondary consideration. And finally, all colonial trade was
channeled through a single port, first Seville until 1720, and then Cadiz. Spain s mercantilist
regulation was extreme almost to the point of absurdity. Smuggling could not be controlled, since it
was in the interest of too many Spaniards on both sides of the .Atlantic to participate. Great Britain
had four major aims in it s mercantile policy: to encourage growth of a native merchant marine fleet,
to protect English manufacturer s from foreign competition, to protect English agriculture, especially
grain farmers, and to accumulate as much hard money as possible (Americans had to pay for
everything with hard currency, which drained gold from America.
Colonial paper was not legal in England).). The Navigation Acts were efforts to put the theory of
mercantilism into actual practice. Under the provisions of this legislation, trade with the colonies was
to be conducted only in English or colonial ships. Certain enumerated items (such as sugar, tobacco
and indigo) were to be shipped only within the empire. Trade destined for nations outside the empire

Iago Psychopath Essay
In the tragedy, Othello, written by William Shakespeare in 1603, the readers are never given a direct
answer on why Iago acts the way he does, and why manipulates and tortures everyone in his life. Thus
not being given a direct answer on why he does this without any remorse, readers are to draw
conclusions on their own, to tie the loose ends on his ways. Iago shows many characteristics of being
mentally ill, with a psychopathic disorder. Shakespeare has left the readers to figure this out, and to
use the text to presume if he is a wether he is a psychopath or not.
The definition of psychopath is: A mental disorder in which an individual manifests amoral and
antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme
egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.. (dictionary.com) Only one character fits the
characteristics in the play, Othello, and that is Iago. Iago is manipulative, conniving, too faced, and a
liar. Everything Iago has ever said or done in the play was manipulative against others, for his own

this society because of the destabilizations that have been caused. Provision of services has been

Friedrich Wilhelm s Impact On Education
Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel lived from April 21, 1782 to June 21, 1852. He was a German
teacher, and he laid out the foundation for modern education. His observations and actions were based
on the recognition that all children have different needs and capabilities, which at the time was a
milestone in education. Furthermore, he invented the concept of kindergarten, and he also created the
educational toys that are known as Froebel Gifts. Froebel is from Oberweissbach, Schwarzburg
Rudolstadt, Germany. Shortly after his birth, Froebel s mother s health began to fail. When he was
nine months old, she died, which greatly impacted his life. In 1792, Froebel moved to the small town

Later, in 1840, he invented the word for the institute, which is where the term kindergarten comes
from. Friedrich Froebel continued on to design his Froebel Gifts, which are educational toys that
include geometric building blocks and pattern activity blocks. They were called gifts because they
were given to the the children as gifts, and they also act as tools for adults to observe the human gifts
each individual child possesses. According to Froebel s method, one can observe the qualities and
ideas that make each child unique when they are able to explore and create. Froebel s main goal was
to recognise how important it is for children to learn, and show how his Gifts could help. Additionally,
he intended to introduce young children to the adult world to help their minds grow and develop
thoughtfully. He introduced the concept of free work into teaching and class work. Some activities that
took place in the first kindergarten involved singing, dancing, gardening and playing with the Froebel
Gifts. It is assumed by modern historians that Froebel spent a lot of time observing children and
creating the designs for the Gifts. He simply named them as Gifts One through Ten. These Gifts are
different from other materials used in kindergartens, because they have the capability to return to their
original form when they are done being used. An important part of playing with the Gifts is that the
Gifts are always presented as a whole form, and when the time to

Frederick II Compare And Contrast Essay
Emperor Frederick II of Germany and King Louis IX of France were both important figureheads of
the crusades as they personally prepared for the departure and led the army to the Holy Land. This
indicated a transition of responsibility for crusading from the Church to royal figures. Even though
Louis IX s crusades failed and Frederick II s crusade gained control of the Holy Land, Louis IX
became a saint whereas Frederick II was declared the Antichrist. Therefore, the outcome of the
crusades led by both kings did not determine the public s approval and disapproval. Despite failing
both of his crusades, Louis IX became a saint because of his sincere intention and devotion to liberate
the Holy Land. Frederick II, on the other hand, was indifferent toward the faith and the main purpose

The cause of elder abuse is multifaceted. Generally, a combination of psychological, social, and
economic factors, as well as mental and physical conditions of the victim and perpetrator contribute to
the occurrence of elder abuse Wagner, Greenberg, Capezuti, 2002 as cited on (Fulmer Greenberg,
2012). In the developing world family members provide 60% to 80% of long term care of their elderly
significant others (American Psychological Association, 2012). Consequently, the burden of providing
constant physical care needs such as toileting and bathing can be particularly stressful. The complexity
of providing care to a physically, cognitively or emotionally impaired elderly individual can also be
tremendous. Depression, confusion, Alzheimer s disease, or incontinence on the part of the aging
person can make care giving especially overwhelming ((American Psychological Association, 2012).
According to American Psychological Association (2006), in addition to providing in average 20
hours a week at home on care giving responsibilities, about 64% of those family caregivers work
either part time or full time out side of home. As a result, the caregivers often suffer from interrupted

Civil Unrest Of The United States
From its conception, the United States of America has been in a very unique position of being able to
develop in any fashion. Under another group of intelligent minds it could have been far different from
the democratic republic that we know it to be today. A key factor in the development of this
government was time. Although there would be some civil unrest in the years following the War of
Independence, the next major outbreak of violence would not occur until the French Revolution.
These circumstances alleviated pressure to establish a strict system of government, and gave the

For states like Maryland and New York, civic duties and powers were limited to the wealthy elite. In
contrast, states with a broader middle class, like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, favored a larger voting
population with less restrictive requirements to participate, and limited the power given to elected
officials. State constitutions laid the groundwork for the next stage of development, a federal
government. The Articles of Confederation were just as important as the Declaration of Independence
in helping to establish the legitimacy of separating from England and becoming a new nation, but the
document was not without its shortcomings. The biggest concern of the Continental Congress was
ensuring that any system created would be protected from potential despotism. The weak framework
of the Articles could be viewed as their focus on what they didn t want, instead of focusing on what
they really needed. This wasn t a document concerning one nation, it was a contract between thirteen
nations to ally against outside repression. For those with a strong sense of state pride, the problems
apparent throughout the Articles of Confederation could be ignored. The federal government wasn t
weak, they said. It was limited. It was designed to protect citizens from tyranny, and in that regard it
was very successful. As oppression was the biggest concern, it was repeatedly addressed in each issue.

Economic Benefits Of Immigration
Workers are always searching for a higher paying job to help support themselves and their families,
even if it means moving to a different country. Economic benefit is one the main reasons why people
would immigrant to the US. Others may seek economic losses if it meant that they would gain
political freedom or reunification with their families. The US has historically been an immigration
country, with new waves coming from different regions throughout generations. The first wave
occurred in the 19th century which consisted of mostly Northern European, while southern and
Eastern European came in the late 19th century to early 20th century. In the 1920 s quotas were put
into place in an attempt to preserve the ethnic composition of the country. The 1965 Immigration Act
got rid of these quotas in the eastern hemisphere and put an emphasis on family reunification by
having a visa system for immigrants put in place. As a matter of fact, this act changed US policy
which had previously discriminated against non northern Europeans. By implementing this policy and
many others after there has been a large increase in immigration of less skilled workers into the US.
For example, the Immigration Act of 1990 again focused on family reunification, employment based
immigrants and diversity of immigrants. By taking in all these immigrants, there are both costs and
benefits that do occur. Benefits range from boosting the American economy to increasing in

Review Of The Book Eowyn From The Lord Of The Rings
Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings: Eowyn in the books is a very cold, very unhappy, character. She s

things she wants to do. Like have a life of any kind. While her brother loves her he kind of doesn t pay
attention to what s going on with her at all. It never even occurs to him that maybe she s not super
psyched about watching over her sickly uncle all the time. He just assumes she s cool with it because
that s what ladies do. It s Gandalf who points out to Eomer, later, that maybe he should have thought
about what it was like for her to be cooped up in Meduseld, watching her family disintegrate and the
world fall apart. That she had no less of a fierce spirit than he does, just because she s female. In the
book, Eomer has a major realization after that, that he might not really have ever known his sister.
This is a bit of a running theme when it comes to Eowyn. She is also being stalked by a gross little
man who is slowly poisoning her uncle s mind and clearly expects to get her as a reward later. Eowyn
isn t stupid, she s well aware of the danger she s in and that she has basically no one to turn to if things
go majorly south, especially once Eomer is banished. Her life is exactly what she most fears: a cage.

The Patterns Of Individuals Past Events Essay
To explore and probe the patterns of individuals past events, my research will consist of interviewing
twenty urban residents in the city of Oakland. I would listen to individual s experiences and stories
about the discrimination these individuals have faced. From the interviews and surveys, I will focus on
three primary themes, which are social differences, racial discrimination, and health disparities.
Anticipating from these abstract principles contributes to the following idea on: the differences placed
upon discrimination amongst people of darker skin tone, and the serious health effects of these African
American people.
To many, health disparities amongst different races may appear like an extraneous matter. But, it has
come to seriously affect the lives of African Americans. Williams (MMWR 2005, Williams 1995)

still bear a disproportionate burden in disease morbidity, mortality, disability, and injury (MMWR

diabetes, and obesity, which is a critical factor for African Americans. Additional findings from
(Krieger, Rowley, Herman, Avery, Phillips 1993) address how other factors such as: ones
socioeconomic status (SES), race, and gender, concludes to the differences of health risks for

The Importance Of Socialization In Ancient Roman Society
The biggest and most indicative social activity in ancient Roman society was that of gladiatorial
combat, and all of the additional components that went along with it. Roman s of all ages,
backgrounds, and social classes spent an exorbitant amount of time observing and enjoying this brutal
pastime. For many, especially historians that hold Rome in high regard, it s hard to believe that these
games were such a critical and pervasive component of Roman social life. To historians the games are
scandalous, a monstrous phenomenon, a morass or hatred and sadomasochism, (Meijer, pp. 2). The

Although Rome was an incredibly successful and wealthy society at it s peak, it was also plagued by
extreme levels of stratification and class conflict. Everybody had their place in society whether that
was a political member of the aristocracy, a regular plebeian farmer, or even a slave. The Roman
Empire went to great lengths to maintain these class divisions. Although many saw the Roman
colosseum as a symbol of unity, even this wasn t free of class division. In the lowest row of seats, on a
raised platform (podium) 4 metres above the arena, sat most prominent Romans, often dressed in
white togas. The emperor had the best seat of all in a kind of box (pulvinar) in the first row at the
centre of one of the longer sides of the arena, (Meijer, pp. 105). Although this class structure was
understood by Roman citizens, it wasn t always abided by. The common people and Gladiators alike
did have instances of revolution and revolt. In 73 BC, Spartacus the Gladiator led a relatively
successful gladiator/slave revolt, eighty gladiators escaped. The escape plan has been attributed to
three men, Spartacus, Crixus and Oenomaus, (Meijer, pp. 31). Although they did ultimately meet their
death, this instance illustrated the dissatisfaction of some Gladiators with the class system they found

The Sea and the Old Man
An old man, alone in the ocean with no other humans in sight, struggles to pull an eighteen foot marlin
close enough to his boat to strike the killing blow. He is tired, and almost at the end of his strength. He
thinks to himself, I will try one more time. In The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway,
protagonist Santiago finds himself in an ongoing struggle for dominance. He must persevere through
pain and adversity in order to catch a giant marlin, and then make his way back home afterwards. In
the beginning of the book, Hemingway paints a picture of what the code hero, or ideal character,
would be. Santiago is definitely one of these code heroes. Throughout the book, he shows incredible
perseverance through difficult situations, he recognizes his flaws and accepts them, and he faces
death, of both his goal and himself, without fear or concern.
Santiago s perseverance is a clear sign that he is one of Hemingway s code heroes. In both his
everyday life and his fight with the marlin, Santiago does not give up and endures whatever pain may
come. At the beginning of the book, Manolin reminds Santiago of how they went eighty seven days
without fish and then ...caught big ones every day for three weeks (10). Santiago has had to go
through hard times, eighty seven days without fish, but he still perseveres through the hardships and in
the end comes back from the hard times. Even

Christian Ethics Class At St. Joseph Home Care
As part of my Christian Ethics class, I volunteered in St. Joseph Home Care for three hours. It s an
organization led by Ukrainian nuns and they have been for years now. The Home Care is mainly filled
with elders and primarily are Ukrainians or Canadians. During the time I volunteered, I learned many
things about myself and others. Also, I experienced new things that influenced me.
My best experience was when I met an old man named Peter. I remember Peter as a funny and cool
person. Peter was probably the best part in volunteering at St. Joseph because he was very fun to be
with. He loves to sing very loudly and it s just amusing to watch. This one time, Peter beckoned me to
come to him and I still remember his warm smile. He took my hand ... Show more content on

The overall atmosphere in St. Joseph was absolutely pleasant because I was around people that were
absolutely welcoming, warm and kind people. Not only that, I was treated nicely because my mom
works there too and they knew me since I always visit my mom. So, they weren t strangers to me.
During my time in St. Joseph s, I was the only student at Ed Feehan, who volunteered there, but a
student from Holy Cross also volunteered there too. His name was Ben. Ben was extremely cool and
funny and we got along very easily. Ben arrived earlier than me and I only got the chance to spend
thirty minutes with him.
The Imitation of Christ
The way I imitated Christ was when I showed people the true meaning of kindness and cheerfulness.
What I did was a great example of what Jesus did for his people. He helped and in return, he brought
back the idea of contentment to the people. Not only I served the people, but most importantly, I
served Jesus. He expected us to follow his way meaning to help each and everyone, no matter who the
person is.
According to Matthew 25:40, And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the
least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me! Matthew 25:40 And Hebrews 6:10,
God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped
his people and continue to help them. Basically, these two gospel are very similar to

The Importance Of An Important Role Within Society
Archivists play an important role within society. Historically, archives were centered on the
preservation of materials (Vassilakaki Moniarou Papaconstantinou, (2017). As the centuries passed,
the role of the archivist expanded the schooling necessary to work as an archivist became more
complex, and the field of archival science developed into what it is today. In the scope of library
professions, the number of archivists is still quite small. As of April 2015, there were approximately
166,200 librarians working in the United States, as of that May, only 5,460 of these were archivists
(Eastwood, 2017). This indicates that the profession is still developing. According to Jenkinson
(1922), the author of the Manual of Archive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is why there is no clear education path. Usually, a bachelor s degree in the liberal arts is pursued;
however, there is no specific major for the career. It is further recommended to take any pre LIS or
archival courses offered during ones undergraduate education (Vault, 2017). Having completed a
bachelor s degree, one could begin working in the field, however, they would be severely lacking in
the required knowledge to perform well as an archivist. It is most typical to further pursue a Master s
degree in History, Library Science, Political Science, or Public Administration. In the last decade, it
has become common to see both Computer Science and Information Systems as Masters Degrees
(OOH, 2015; Anderson, 2010, 756). As noted by Eastwood (2017), a master s program specifically
dedicated to Archival Science does not exist in the United States; however, multiple educators in the
field seek to have one established (78). Though there are many options for ones higher education
degree, individuals seeking a career in archives typically pursue a degree in History or LIS because of
the significant overlap between the degree and the professional competencies (Shepherd, 2010, 187).
Furthermore, depending on the specific type of archives one intends to work in, it may be necessary to
pursue a dual masters. For example, if one intends to work in the archives at a historical society, it is
necessary to have a History and LIS degree (Vault,

Examples Of How The Grinch Stole Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas!!In the movie by Dr. Seuss, the Grinch is portrayed as the villain.
Why? Because he s a nasty, coldhearted creature that hates Christmas. But there is a reason for
loathing the Christmas season. The Grinch plots to steal the joy and cheer of Christmas time away
from the Whos in Who ville.Which he equally hates as much as the happy celebrations. As a child, the
Grinch was rejected by the Who ville community. He was made fun of and disliked by everybody, so
he lived secluded up in the icy, gloomy mountains for his entire life.
The Grinch actually enjoyed Christmas as a kid; he had a crush on Martha May, who is now with the
Mayor. However, the Mayor used taunt the Grinch about his crush on Martha. For the Christmas

Alternative to Incarceration Essay December 5, 2001 Alternatives to incarceration Ever since the first prison opened in the United States in 1790, incarceration has been the center of the nation s criminal justice system. Over this 200 year period many creative alternatives to incarceration have been tried, and many at a much lower cost than imprisonment. It wasn t until the late 1980 s when our criminal justice systems across the country began experiencing a problem with overcrowding of facilities. This problem forced lawmakers to develop new options for sentencing criminal offenders. Unlike jail or prisons, which create an expensive cycle of violence and crime, these alternatives actually prevent violence and strengthen communities. Community corrections programs ... The first is curfew which requires offenders to be in their residence during limited, specific hours, generally at night. The offender s movements outside of the curfew hours are unregulated. Prior to the arrival of Dracula, the audience sees Lucy as a as a voluptuous, beautiful woman. Lucy has three men asking for her hand in marriage. Writing to Mina, Lucy complains, Why can t they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble? (81). This shows she knows she cannot say those words because it is frowned upon in Victorian culture, but it does not stop her from mentally crossing rigid social boundary. Reproductive Rights Of Women In The United States The ability for women from all walks of life to have access to affordable and safe healthcare including abortion is something I m passionate about. It is appalling to me as both a woman and as a citizen of the United States that women have had their reproductive choices made for them or extremely limited by legislatures, especially when these decisions seem to come from a place of ignorance. It s been incredibly disheartening to watch the reproductive rights of women within the United States be chipped away and restricted over the past decade by state and federal legislatures. • 6. A Humanistic Counselling Approach For Self Knowledge And... Introduction As a humanistic counselling approach, person centred therapy emphasises the potential for self knowledge and personal growth (Corey, 2009). It views the deviation from one s inherent goodness as a source of psychological problems, in turn aiming to increase one s self awareness to help them direct their life in more satisfying ways (Cooper, 2003). With the person centred approach being more an attitude than a set of definitive techniques, a better understanding of its process is formed through connecting theory and practice. As such, this case study aims to apply the person centred approach to a fictional client based around Lester Burnham from American Beauty (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). Initially, an introduction to the client will be presented, followed by the assumptions, assessment, and goals formed when working with him from a person centred perspective. Several hypothetical helping sessions will then be presented. The Presenting Problem Lester is a 40 year old man referred to me for counselling by his doctor. He is currently married and lives with his wife, Carolyn, and their 16 year old daughter Jane. He is employed as a fast food attendant (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). At the initial examination Lester dresses untidily and unshaven, and avoids eye contact. Lester reports an overall feeling of unhappiness (Cohen, Jinks Mendes, 1999). This war of ours is the American Civil War 1861 1865. It is one of the most significant wars ever fought in American History. Many Americans lost their lives, some defending freedom, and others defending the Union. The warfare was a major contributor to the casualties suffered during this bloodbath. The five factors are: military strategy, worldview paradigm, weapons and supplies, terrain, and climate. Military Strategy is important to understand because it is the way that warfare is carried out. A historian named Kelly Snell writes, Old world tactics and training were inefficient due to modern weaponry (Snell). There was pressure for a transition to new military strategy because of the new weapons. The tactics used before the civil war are often referred to as antebellum. Antebellum means existing before a war (Antebellum). Advances in weaponry caused for a change of thought on how to approach warfare. • 10. The Four Stages Of The Cell Cycle The cell cycle has four main stages. The cell cycle is the regular pattern of growth. The four stages consist of Gap 1 (G1), Synthesis (S), Gap 2 (G2), and Mitosis (M). Gap 1, consists of a cell that carries its normal functions. Calls also increase in size, and the organelles increase in number. A cell will spend the most time in this phase. But it also depends on the cell type to see how long it will spend in this phase. During this phase the cell has to pass a critical checkpoint before it can continue into the (S) stage, also called the Synthesis stage. It would be dangerous for a cell to keep dividing if the certain conditions were not met. The cells in this stage also need signals from the other cells to tell the if division is needed. Now the next stage is the Synthesis stage. During this phase the cell makes a copy of it s nuclear DNA. By the end of the (S) phase DNA appears grainy in photos and the cell nucleus contains two complete sets of DNA. Gap 2, is the third stage of the cell cycle. The cells continue doing there thing and more growth occurs. This phase is like the checkpoint, everything in the cell has to be going right for the cell to be able to enter mitosis. Mitosis is the fourth stage of the cell cycle. It includes two phases mitosis and cytokinesis. Mitosis is the division of the cell s nucleus and all it s contents. Cytokinesis is the process that divides the cell s cytoplasm. The stages of the cell cycle and the proteins are all alike in all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are five types of euthanasia, but two types are voluntary and involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia is when a person requests to end their life due to a painful illness with no hope of survival, and involuntary euthanasia is the person dying requests a faster death through infancy or capital punishment. Two kinds of euthanasia in particular are suicide; when you take your own life without help, and assisted suicide; when you have a terminal disease and cannot commit suicide, so you allow someone else to do it for you. The interesting thing about euthanasia is that it is only legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, and Luxembourg. Although euthanasia is not legal in the following places, assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Canada, and in the US states of Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Vermont, Montana, Washington DC, and California. The ethical theory that agrees with suicide is Ulitarianism, while Kantianism would be debatable. Jeremy Bentham states we should create the most happiness and pleasure and reduce suffering and unhappiness through the ethical theory of Ulitarianism. Functional assessment revealed that smoking behaviour was often preceded by a busy or stressful environment (antecedent) and that mood and/or anxiety levels functioned as establishing operations for smoking behaviour (smoking was often preceded by higher anxiety rating or lower mood rating). As well, the functional assessment revealed that smoking behaviour was maintained by positive sensory stimulation (the experience of a slight buzz when smoking) and by temporary escape/distraction from a demanding environment. I decided to choose A Thousand Acres because the book seemed interesting and could have potential with it being a modern version of Shakespeare s King Lear, but with the setting and plot around an Iowa farm. What I mean is that the idea is about someone is having an amazing life, but serious or bad things happen to that person which could lead to emotional problems or, in King Lear s case, insanity. Now, since I am halfway through A Thousand Acres, I can say there are some hints of King Lear. For example, one of our characters, named Ginny, is showing signs of a mental disorder, something along the lines of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and in the beginning, she seems happy and cheery, meaning that something had to happen for her to get emotional scars. But if we are looking for a genre, I would say either realistic fiction or domestic realism (which is the genre about 19th century novels popular with women, which the book kind of is), due to the fact that things like PTSD or abuse can happen, and it isn t just in the Lifetime movie of the week or in a nightmare, things like this happen in real life. This theory suggests that the government should play an active role in the economy by encouraging exports and discouraging imports, especially through the use of tariffs. Spain and England used the mercantile system to benefit the mother countries. The mercantile system had special regulations, which usually extracted some sort of reaction from the colonies. If necessary, the policies would be changed to better suit the mother country. The favorable balance of trade was upheld through certain regulations. Manufacturing was forbidden in certain colonies to keep the market open for imports. The economic health of the colony was always a secondary consideration. And finally, all colonial trade was channeled through a single port, first Seville until 1720, and then Cadiz. Spain s mercantilist regulation was extreme almost to the point of absurdity. Smuggling could not be controlled, since it was in the interest of too many Spaniards on both sides of the .Atlantic to participate. Great Britain had four major aims in it s mercantile policy: to encourage growth of a native merchant marine fleet, to protect English manufacturer s from foreign competition, to protect English agriculture, especially grain farmers, and to accumulate as much hard money as possible (Americans had to pay for everything with hard currency, which drained gold from America. Colonial paper was not legal in England).). The Navigation Acts were efforts to put the theory of mercantilism into actual practice. According to Froebel s method, one can observe the qualities and ideas that make each child unique when they are able to explore and create. Froebel s main goal was to recognise how important it is for children to learn, and show how his Gifts could help. Additionally, he intended to introduce young children to the adult world to help their minds grow and develop thoughtfully. He introduced the concept of free work into teaching and class work. Some activities that took place in the first kindergarten involved singing, dancing, gardening and playing with the Froebel Gifts. It is assumed by modern historians that Froebel spent a lot of time observing children and creating the designs for the Gifts. He simply named them as Gifts One through Ten.
