Democracy Derailed looks at the initiative process, the effects of that process and asked the question,
Is this a good way to make public policy? I feel that even though the process is not perfect it is a great
way to allow the average citizen more power in policy making.
The History
Democracy Derailed begins with addressing the evolution of the initiative process. During the first
twenty years in Plymouth Colonies, all adult men met to consider legislation. In 1715, Massachusetts
had to address anything that was supported by ten citizens. By 1788, Massachusetts began conducting

The common ground that all members shared was their dislike and distrust for Democrats,
Republicans, banks and monopolists. They felt that these groups were controlled by extreme
corruption and infested legislatures with bribes to maintain control and power.
Both groups chose the initiative to help clean up governmental corruption, inspired by its use in
Switzerland. The Webster s Dictionary defines initiative as, the introduction of proposed legislation, as
to popular vote, by voters petitions. This is what dre3w both the Populists and Progressives to
migrating initiatives to the United States. The popular theory was that if voters would gain education
and curiosity connected to public affairs. Initiatives seemed like the logical solution to allow power
directly aback in the people s hands. Woodrow Wilson wrote that, the men who have been ruling
America must consent to let majority into the game...We will not allow the few to continue to
determine what the policy of the country is to be...all men with the convictions of America in their
hearts, will crowd to that standard and a new day of achievement may come for the liberty we love.

Columbian Exchange
There were many factors that the Columbian Exchange affected the world. It all began with the
legendary sailor, Christopher Columbus. In the year 1451, Columbus was born in the Republic of
Genoa (Irving 2). King John II of Portugal Hired Christopher Columbus as his merchant marine in
1477. At the time, Portugal was colonizing kingdoms and creating trades with African territories on
the Atlantic coast. In 1480 s, they discovered that the Indian Ocean was on the East side of Africa.
This discovery made a trade route for goods in Asia and goods in Portugal. One day, Columbus read
about the theory that the world is smaller than anticipated (Irving 20), he was convinced with the idea
and tried to convince king for funds to sail west for riches, but unfortunately, King John II was not
convinced with this idea.
In 1492, Ferdinand and Isabella saw the potential of the idea. They decided to fund Columbus with 3
ships. Santa Maria was the largest ship along with two ships, the Pinta and the Nina. Christopher
Columbus began his journey on the 3rd day of August 1492 from Palos de la Frontera (Irving 72), a
Spanish province of Huelva. On October, an island was spotted. The group of people that was living
on that island were the Tainos. The two parties began trading with each other. However, Columbus is
still gold hungry, so he kept wandering around until the Santa Maria crashed at

Economic Theories and Policies After World War II
Throughout the United States history, especially after World War I, there have been many competing
economic theories about government policy. The architects of the most referenced policies tend to be
John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich Hayek of the Austrian School of economic thought and Ayn Rand
(though it can be argued Rand s ideas are more philosophy than economic theory.) These three
theories seem to be always in the forefront of any economic discussions taking place in the United
States. Ayn Rand s main belief in the economic system is to have a completely unregulated laissez
faire economy. She espoused the need for government to leave the people alone, and let them try to
fulfill their own desires. She argues that the government are looters that take with threat of force the
earnings of the people and then redistributes the ill gotten capital to moochers , or people who depend
on the government for some sort of assistance (Seabrook, NPR). She contends that government
interference will cause the producers or capitalist to pack up and leave everyone else behind. She
demonstrates her argument through her most well known novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas
Shrugged (Ayn Rand, Wikipedia). Ayn Rand s theory tends to mesh well with libertarian and
conservative ideals, and has found a home with Congressman Rand Paul, Congressman Steve King,
and many Tea Party idealists (Seabrook, NPR). Friedrich Hayek s theories are based more on the
macro level than Ayn Rand s. Hayek

Modern Indie Music Movement
Imagine the discovery of an art form so abstract and different, one of which possessed with strange
ideals and seemingly free artists to create and dispose at their will. These are the basic attributes of
what we call independent, or indie, music. Independent music is a movement meant to represent the
opposition of being trite an anti establishment fuck you to the mass marketing of originality.
Independent music started as bands that were on small and relatively low budget labels that had a do it
yourself attitude and retained an outsider and underground perspective. From then on, the

This program represented the most remarkable scientific feat of the entire 20th century, and perhaps of

For the astronauts to land on the moon new vehicles would have to be implemented for the them to
