Mercantilism And Comparative Advantage Theory
As (Lisa l martin) stated that international trade provides an opportunity and risk to a group of nation

theories to explain the need of trade and what to trade. There are different trade theories like
Mercantilism, non mercantilism, absolute advantage thory, comparative advantage theory are some of
those.
Mercantilism is an economic system used in European countries in 1800s. and 16th to the mid 18th

Strike at San Fransisco State College Essay
Strike at San Fransisco State College
In the meantime at San Francisco State College, students in the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF),
a coalition of African American, Latino, and Asian American student groups, began demanding
reforms that addressed the concerns of students of color and the surrounding community. After more
than a year of negotiating with the school and organizing students, they called a strike on November 6,
1968, that became the longest student strikein United States history. When it was finally settled in
March 1969, many of the students demands were met, including the establishment of a School of
Ethnic Studies.

Hayakawa, one of the few faculty members willing to go back to work, felt it was his duty to cross the
picket line and continue the education of the students who desired it. He believed the faculty had
forgotten their primary mission teaching, conducting research, and pursuing academic excellence.
On November 28, 1968, Hayakawa was named acting president of San Francisco State College by
California Governor Ronald Reagan and the trustees of the California state college system. With no
previous administrative or political experience, his selection was an unpopular choice among faculty
members and students. Prior to his appointment, Hayakawa had served on a five person presidential
selection committee whose members had reportedly agreed not to seek the office. Hayakawa denied
any agreement had been made and accepted the job under extreme opprobrium from committee
members. Hayakawa was viewed as eccentric in appearance and style. Wearing Hawaiian carnation
leis and an Irish tam o shanter, his personal appearance was indicative of his personality.
His first priority as acting president was to reopen the campus following Thanksgiving break ending
the strike. To achieve this objective, he yielded on some student demands and rejected others. This,
however, was unsatisfactory to student leaders, who employed 1,000 protesters to close the campus on
the first day following from Thanksgiving break. Taking a firm stance,

Bernie Mac Research Paper

1.) Self presentation is described as playing out a self to the reaction and anticipation of others (p. 32).
Men and women both modify their self presentation to the reaction of others. In a classic study noted
by Crawford of female college students who were provided with details of male students who were
either desirable or undesirable as a potential date and who was characterized as having traditional or
more modern values, According to the textbook the study found that, When women thought they
would have the opportunity to meet the man, they changed their descriptions of themselves to fit the
man s traditional or modern values but only if he was attractive (p.25). Self presentation can be looked
at as calculated choices, choices that are made under certain circumstances in order to appeal to
certain groups or others. For example, when Jordan overheard his uncle Bernie and his friends making
fun of him for doing gymnastics he decided to get into basketball again to please his uncle. Another
example is Briana, when her mother wants her to be more tough and aggressive when she s out on the
field she begins to do so because she s wants to please her mother. According to the textbook doing
gender is, the second level of the gender system, and that, gender is created, performed, and
perpetuated in social interaction (p. xix). The concept of doing gender is not only creating and

Performance Evaluation Of A Wimax Testbed
Performance Evaluation of a WiMAX Testbed under VoIP Traffic
ABSTRACT
Among several first mile solutions proposed so far, the key advan¬tage of the IEEE 802.16 standard,
widely known as WiMAX, is to ensure large area coverage and rather inexpensive equipment at the
subscriber side. Modern requirements to wireless connectivity include mandatory QoS guarantees for
a wide set of real time appli¬cations: this is the case of the ever growing trend of VoIP calls. To this
aim, WiMAX supports natively real time traffic. In this paper, we report on the results of
measurements performed on a WiMAX Alvarion testbed, located in Turin, Italy. In particular, through
syn¬thetic VoIP traffic generation, we obtained the corresponding E model figures, thus tracing the
system operation intervals.

Comparing Catherine II and Elizabeth I
The above quote applies very well to both Catherine II and Elizabeth I. Neither lady sought the power
of their lands; they were given it in a unusual circumstance. They then display great leadership and do
great things for each country. Catherine II, Empress of Russia, was born in Germany in 1729, but with
the name of Sophia. She was the daughter of Prince Christian August and Princess Johanna Elizabeth.
Since she was a princess, she was home schooled. She became very smart and free spirited. Nancy
Whitelaw, the author of Catherine the Great spoke on Sophia s childhood and noted, Sophia loved to
be in charge, and though some of her playmates said she was bossy, there was no doubt she was a
natural leader (Whitelaw 15 16). When she was around the age of fifteen, she met Prince Karl Peter
Ulrich of Russia. Ulrich s mother, Czarina of Russia, was trying to find a wife for her son. She knew
her son was not fit for the throne, and the country would be devastated with him at the head. Whoever
Ulrich married would earn the right to rule Russia (Whitelaw 18). After some consideration and
suggestions, she decided that Sophia was the right girl for Ulrich. Even though her father did not like
the fact that she would have to convert from Lutheran to Orthodox, he gave consent. She moved back
to Russia with Ulrich, converted to Orthodox, and changed her name to Catherine. Catherine now had
to give birth to a son as the heir to the throne, but it was going to be hard due to Ulrich s

development of a strategy in creating the cultural change. Culture change is not easy and will take
action at all levels, most importantly at the top. This will begin with the development of an updated
mission and vision statement to include values and strategies moving forward. The implementation of
new hiring practices, training practices and policies will be discussed to aid in creating the cultural
change at Wells Fargo. This report discusses moving from words to action and how Wells Fargo can
generate buy in throughout the changes discussed. This report will discuss the option of bringing in a
consultant and phase in of proposed changes. Change is ongoing and even after implementation there
is a need for review and follow up. Wells Fargo has begun to make changes which will be reviewed
for effectiveness and efficiency throughout the sections of this paper. Wells Fargo is and has been a
leader in the banking industry for years. Well Fargo was founded by William George Fargo (1818 81)

Rawls And John Stuart Mill
A very large and important idea in the political texts of philosophers is freedom, and the ways in
which a society may be considered free in the first place. Two philosophers stand out in terms of their
ideas of political freedom: John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Rawls and Mill both strive to convince
us,
the reader as to what form a society must take in order to maximize its freedom. Mill argues that the
only restraints set upon people are those in order to prevent someone from doing direct harm to
another1
. Rawls goes one step further, where he solves not only the idea of freedom but also the issue
of equality in freedom that is not touched upon by previous philosophers. Although the ideas
presented by John Rawls may seem far fetched in their mechanisms, I feel that his method of
approach towards the idea of modern freedom not only builds upon the ideas of Mill, but also offers
the most advanced solution to the problem to date.
In order to properly explain the connections between Rawls and Mills, I will explain the ideas
behind Mill s philosophy first. Mill states his initial point about freedom very clearly: The only
purpose
for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his
will,
is to prevent harm to others. 2
Mill says, quite clearly, that the only time one s liberty (and in this case,
freedom) may be infringed upon is when they are doing direct harm to another. This single statement
is the underlying

What Does The Water Symbolize In The Sun Also Rises
Symbolism is used in many novels to express ideas or concepts without directly stating them.
Symbolism can be helpful in generating thoughts without needing deeper explanation from the author
and symbols render interruption of the plot. In Ernest Hemingway s novel, The Sun Also Rises,
symbolism plays a key role in the meaning and themes of the plot. The symbols can be widely
interpreted and used in many different ways but all exclusively aluminate the final themes in the
novel. Hemingway s use of bull fighting, post war handicaps and water throughout the novel directly
relates to the character s feelings and actions in the basic plot while still alluding to deeper meanings.
Within the novel, one key symbol is bull fighting. As the novel progresses, bull fighting stands for
many different things. Primarily, bull fighting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Water is a commonly used symbol of cleansing or peace, and in this book, Hemingway uses water to
symbolize both. Across the novel, when Jake leaves his friends and is away from his pain (Brett),
water is clearly present, representing peace and happiness. The two times that Jake is alone and
relaxing, when fishing and when in San Sebastian, he describes the water vividly and emphasizes
nature s presence. Then in the quiet water I turned and floated. Floating I saw only the sky, and felt the
drop and lift of the swells... The water was buoyant and cold. It felt as though you could never sink
(241). His in depth descriptions of the water highlights the symbolism and showcases Jake s moments
of peace. Water is also used as a symbol of purification through the character Brett. In the story, Brett
is constantly saying that she must go bathe after an altercation among the group or after she does
something immoral. It can be inferred that she is metaphorically trying to wash away her impurities
with the purity of the

In the effort of the competition, the White Star Line came up with an idea of creating a massive,
luxurious ship that would later be given the name The Royal Mail Steamer Titanic, or Titanic for short
and as it is well known today. The main goal of this ship was to establish a primary ship for the
traveling to and from the United States in an extravagant style for the most well paying passengers
among their cruise line. This was made known to the public through the pride the Titanic had earned it
s fleet, for it was the largest moving man made object ever recorded before the year 1912 ( Titanic s

Terrorism And Domestic Terrorism
The idea of terrorism is to incite terror of a government by intimidation or coercion. For example, the
Weathermen, they used bombs to blow up symbols of the United States to instill terror into the
government, to get Americans out of Vietnam War. However, the jihadist of al Qaeda crashed two
planes into the World Trade Center to provoke fear into the US by showing weakness in our private
transportation system and changing the lives of Americans. Nevertheless, the terror act of 9/11 has
people preparing for more international terrorist attacks, but in the last 16 years the only terrorist
attacks in the US have been domestic terrorism. This fear of international terrorism was a hot topic
during the 2016 Presidential Election, where one party wanted to ban a religious group of people from
entering the US. Yet, domestic terror attacks are by far more many than international ones: in our data
set, only about 14% of the almost 82,000 terror incidents were international terror events (Liebert,
Kokakos, Schulze, 2011, p. 1). This shows that citizens do not know the different between
international terrorism and domestic terrorism, because if they did, there would more focus on
domestic terrorism even though terrorism is so rare compared to other crimes (Newman Clark, 2008).
I am going to discuss the difference between international terrorism and domestic terrorism.
International terrorism has a specific definition as described in 18 as code 2331. For instance, in the

Leptin receptor gene q223r polymorphism in young urban Sri Lankan women
Introduction
Overweight and obesity result from fat accumulation in adipose tissue which is an important fact
occur in result of energy imbalance and associated with many chronic diseases. The risk of becoming
overweight/obese with this fat accumulation increases across all socio economic classes as a result of
urbanization, which expose them to an obesogenic environment. A relatively high prevalence of
overweight and obesity has been identified in Sri Lankan urban population, especially females
(Katulanda, et al., 2010). Genetics plays an important role in obesity (Loos et al, 2009). Twin studies
states also supports the fact that genetic influences are notable in obesity (Bouchard, et al,1990).
Genetic composition can predispose an individual to weight gain in this obesogenic environment
which arises with urbanization.
Different SNPs in the lep R have been associated with overwitght / obesity. SNP Q223R in
extracellular domain of leptin receptor gene, results in the nucleotide substitution, Adenine to Guanine

amino acid change placed in first cytokine receptor homology, in between two FNIII like sub domains

first six months of his war premiership and establish the nature and pattern of his war leadership. [3]
In conclusion, Winston Churchill was a remarkably humble man. He always refused to take the credit
he deserved for his leadership. When cheered at the demise of Nazi Germany, he responded, I have
never accepted what many people have kindly said, namely that I inspired the nation. It was a nation
and race dwelling all round that had the lion heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar. [4]
He was the lion who roared when the British Empire needed him most.

An example of my own would be in English class when we learn about grammar rules and pun cation.
We learned about the grammar rules and how they could affect your paper if you do did not know
them. We never actually learned what they meant. A problem posing class in math would be the
teacher and student trying to come up with a way that the student can understand how to do problems.
Also, the student asking the teacher questions about different ways they could solve the problem

Current Economic Conditions In The United States
Current Economic Conditions
As previously stated in the executive summary, the United States economy is currently stagnating.
From week to week we may see a rise in one indicator while there is a fall in another indicator, but
none of the rises or falls are drastic enough to have an overwhelming impact on the economy as a
whole. Although the economy is not near as strong as it was before the 2008 2009 recession, arguably
one of the biggest economic crises of the past decade, there has been much growth and strength
throughout the past few years with this year being the first year in which the economy is in somewhat
of a holding pattern. I believe, that even with the little growth and movement of the United States
economy over the past year, it is still perhaps one of the strongest economies in the world at the
moment.
The rise and fall of GDP over a specific period of time is, in many cases, the number one indicator for
how the economy is doing. Being the output of final goods and services, GDP works well with
consumer confidence and provides a good idea as to the general health of the economy. By looking at
Figure 1, we can see that GDP rose steeply after the 20008 2009 recession and has continued to
remain strong with relatively little movement since 2010. In the most recent quarters, 2014 and 2015,
GDP has declined a little, but the decline is in no way too drastic nor did it have any significant impact
on the economy. This slight decline is more like GDP

There he created the Black Paintings with intense, haunting themes, reflective of the artist s fear of

Main Features Of Oligopoly
Oligopoly:
Oligopoly is a type of imperfect competition, wherein there are few sellers dealing either in
homogeneous or differentiated products. The term oligopoly has been derived from the two Greek
words, oligoi means few and poly means control. Thus, it means the control of the few organisations
in the market.
For example, oligopoly in India exists in the aviation industry where there are just a few players, such
as Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, etc. All these airlines depend on each other for setting their
pricing policies. This is because the prices are effected by the price of the competitors products.
Features and Pricing Strategy among oligopolistic firms: o Existence of few sellers:
One of the primary features of oligopoly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This implies that organisations may either produce homogeneous products, such as cement, asphalt,
concrete and bricks, or differentiated products such as an automobile. If organisations produce
homogeneous products, it is said to be pure oligopoly.
o Impediments in entry:
Other important characteristics of oligopolistic competition is that neither organisations cannot easily
enter the market; nor they can make an exit from the market. The reasons for difficult entry in the
market are various legal, social and technological barriers. This also implies that the existing
organisations have a complete control over the market.
o Enhanced role of government:
Under oligopolistic market structure, the government has a greater role as it acts as a guard to anti
competitive behaviours of the oligopolists. It is often observed that oligopolists may engage in the
illegal practice of collusion, where they together make production and pricing decisions. Oligopolists
may start acting as a single organisation and further increase prices and profits. Thus, in such
environment, the government requires to keep a watch on such activities to curb the illegal

issues, both mentally and physically. Each individual has a set of ethics that differs from every other
person. Due to this difference, there have been many controversies in the use of corporal punishment.
This becomes an issue in multiple environments for teachers and parents alike. As said before, each
individual s set of ethics differethical frame differs and thus each teacher must incorporate their own
ethics into the educational environment. Since there are no defining lines for the degrees of physical
pain dealt to the students,#there are line 2017 its called abuse it is up to those in charge to see if the
physical punishment was fit for the act of disobedience. In Asian countries, such as India, corporal
punishment is often used for academic reasons, howeverbut western countries, such as the United
States, often incorporate corporal punishment to reinforce the compliance of students. Educators need
to reexamine the situation and gauge the student body s voice.
To understand the complex relation between the educators and students, the ethical frames must be
known. According to Ashwini

The Great Train Robbery By Michael Crichton
Going Where No Man Has Gone Before
The motives for a crime are sometimes not as clear as some may believe. In the Great Train Robbery,
by Michael Crichton, Edward Pierce had complex motives for his crime. He was aware of how
difficult the robbery would be, and decided to undergo the whole ordeal for that reason alone. Edward
Pierce decided to commit the train robbery to know that he can succeed in completing a massive
challenge few have attempted. Pierce chose to rob the train because of the difficulty of the task. He
wanted to complete a challenge few have even attempted. According to the novel, The gentleman

Nuclear Bomb Wrong
Parsa Espandar Stafford, Tapia English/History Right or Wrong A decision is as simple as it is
complex, especially one as influential and impactful as the decision to drop a nuclear bomb on Japan.
The consequences and the never ending debates on the matter ripple through to this day, including the
many alternatives or whether it was a morally acceptable choice. As this is a pretty controversial topic,
I feel the need to put an emphasis on the fact that the decision to bomb Japan was made at a time of
war. We are here, today, at peaceful times, looking upon a heavy decision that was made at a much
more chaotic time. With that said, that decision was not made lightly. The power of a nuclear bomb
was being slowly painted as WWII was nearing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I said, their culture is bound by honor; if, say, the people of Japan started feeling that there was
nothing left for them in that war, they were more likely to make the most out of what remained. They
would fight back until the last man stood. Anything but an unconditional surrender or dropping
nuclear bombs meant risk; the only reason why the latter solution meant a low risk was because of the
scare factor. To be fair, it wasn t as simple as I m putting it. People are complicated, cultures and
governments even more so. However that didn t stop alternatives strategies for coming to

Comparing Two Movie Genres
How we choose the movie genres that we would like to watch. One could simply choose a genre to
watch just by what they love to watch or by how they are feeling on that particular day. Some people
have a preference towards the actors that may be performing in a particular movie genre. Others prefer
more than one genre, were not subjected to just choose one genre, but some may just stick to one
genre.
We all have preference when it comes to movies. Some may love horror and then some may prefer an
action movie or even a comedy. Some may be prejudiced to a movie just because of the genre the
movie has been placed. Genre is a classification of artistic composition based upon their style, form,

do you think Lorraine Jenson and John Conlan have? Well you are about to find that out. In the book
The Pigman, written by Paul Zindel, there are two characters, Lorraine and John in which i am
comparing and contrasting. Even though Lorraine doesn t seem like as though she has alot in common
with John they can be alike and different in the littlest things possible, such as in physical appearance,
in thier behavior and personality, and in their strengths and weaknesses.Just see for your self.

Now, each characters in the book The Pigman compare and contrast in personality and behavior in
many ways. Lorraine and John both lie to their parents, skip school, swears, make prank calls, and
they both come from dysfunctional families. They differin many ways because Lorraine wants to
become a writer while John wants to become an actor. Although John doesnt listen to his parents and
is jealous of his perfect older brother, he isn t really that bad of a person. On the other hand Lorraine is
tought to hate men because of her mother mistakes, not only does she act like her mother but she is
very very very cautious just like her too. You just never caught him.

Critical Appreciation Of Robert Frost s Poetry
Poetry in the purest form comes from an author that is writing from his or her own life experiences
and Robert Frost did just that. In three words I can sum up everything I ve learned about life: it goes
on. Frost uttered these words in remark to how he coped with his troubled life. He dealt with heaps of
loss throughout his lifetime which led to him expressing his innermost thoughts and feelings through
poetry. Robert Frost s poetry was influenced by his depression that came from the many trials he went
through during his life, the different places he lived and the many poets he befriended.
Frost dealt with depression caused by onerous circumstances in his life and these circumstances
profoundly influenced his writing. When Robert was eleven years old he lost his father which forced
his family to move away from their home and try to cope with their lost. This was just the first of
many loved ones who would pass away during his life. Once he got married his first born son died at
the age of four to an illness, his second born committed suicide at the age of thirty eight, his third
child developed a mental illness and his last child died in her early twenties during childbirth. He went
on to also lose his wife to heart attack in 1938 and he was forced to commit his sister into a mental
institution in 1920. After all the loved ones he lost he plunged into a state of depression which
translated into his tone of writing in some of his most famous poems. My Butterfly, the first

School Uniforms are the Right Choice Essay
In the United States, millions of students attend public schools and face some sort of violence that is
associated, with that school. It can be related to gangs, bullying or peer pressure from other students.
Fourteen percent of students reported being a victim of bullying in 2003 and 52 out of 220 incidents
between 1994 and 1999 were associated with gangs. This has led to non gang related students bringing
firearms to school to protect themselves. (D.Stanton, 2006) Because of these rising issues, parents are
being forced to pull their children out of public school and home school them for their safety. Is this
the best action for the children? Will they be missing out on many life skills that they learn while

In 1987, Cherry Hill Elementary School in Baltimore, Maryland, became the first school to adopt a
uniform policy. (Education Bug, 2010) After this school s implementation of a dress code, there was a
dramatic increase in the use of school uniforms in the United States; which was inspired by former
President Bill Clinton. President Clinton proposed a challenge to all public schools by saying, he
challenges all of our schools to teach character education; along with good values and good
citizenship. If it means that our teenagers will stop killing each other over designer labels, then
schools should require students to wear a uniform everyday to school. (Brunsma, 2006) His speech
was just the beginning of the very controversial uniform debate, and people on both sides of the
arguments have tried hard to make sure that their case is heard. The main reason for implementing a
school uniform policy would be to increase children s safety at school. Gang violence in schools is at
an all time high. In 1989, a high school student from Baltimore was shot and wounded in a fight over
a pair of sunglasses that cost $95.00. Since this incident, educators started restricting what students
could wear. (Brunsma, 2006) By doing this, the violence in the school has decreased. According to
Holly Charlonne with Life Script, she states that gangs have a need to wear a certain color to
distinguish them from other neighborhood

Colonial Grievances
Most of the framers of the constitution either attended or graduated college, were involved in the
American Revolution, and had already been involved in the government. The Constitutional
Convention was a meeting held in Philadelphia between May and September of 1787. There,
delegates discussed revisions to the United States Government. The Constitutional Convention was
held in order to address the problems of the weak central government that existed under the Articles of
Confederation. Many of the ideas that were written into the United States Constitution were
influenced and based on many important factors. The Enlightenment, colonial grievances listed in the
Declaration of Independence, and failures of the Articles of Confederation were ... Show more content

This was because The Articles had a weak central government. The Articles of Confederation were
created by the Continental Congress in 1777. The federal government did not have enough power in
order to assemble the military. Congress mostly relied on the state militias for security because the
Articles of Confederation did not have a national military. The Constitution allows the government to
create a military. The United States government owns/controls its own military. In the Articles of
Confederation every state had their own smaller military. The government can create and impose
taxes. Government are able to make taxes as long as they are voted for and passed. The Articles of
Confederation s central government could not put taxes on the states. Congress was the only branch of
the central government and was unable to collect taxes to use during the war or to handle the
government after the war. This letter was written by George Washington in 1787 and was sent to
Henry Knox. He wrote that if government... is unable to enforce its laws; ... anarchy and confusion
must prevail and every thing will be turned topsy turvey in that State (Document E). The Constitution
states that the Executive branch is designated for lawmaking. The United States Government can

Pro Athletes Role Models
A role model, as described by Google is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated
(hello read me and find a god damn source!!!). Charles Barkley, a professional basketball player, said
in a popular Nike ad, I m not a role model. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn t mean I should
raise your kids (Don t forget bout me u dipwad!!!). This sparked the debate; Should pro athletes be
role models? Children need a true hero to look up to, and these athletes satisfy that need. These
athletes show the features of a hero, not a criminal. Adolescents need athletes as their role models to
emulate their positive traits. To begin, athletes do not only excel on the field, but they also show off

Players appear to have the tendency to get arrested, and their careers and fans are devastated. But
statistics don t lie. According to Tom Keane, a former Boston city councilor and Boston Globe
Columnist, wrote this in an article: The rate of arrest of pro athletes for assault and domestic violence
was less than half that of the general population. This applied for other crimes as well. It seems as if
NFL players are committing so many crimes because every time they do, they make the news (Keane
2 3). So instead of breaking the law, these athletes are actually just training. An athlete usually work
more than 40 hours a week for several months (Athletes and Sports Competitors 1). The motivation it
requires to be an athlete doesn t stop here. You must be willing to work hard in the face of fatigue,
boredom, and pain. Motivation will impact everything that influences your sports performance.
Physical conditioning, technical and tactical training, and mental preparation (Taylor 1). Along with
the motivation for the Grind , you must be willing to give up a big chunk of free time you spend with
friends and family. You ll (also) have to follow a rigorous diet plan. You have to consume a precise
amount of carbs, proteins, and fat (Anne 1). Along with diets, each athlete has a different work ethic,
or plan for working out. Kobe Bryant arguably has one of the best. During the 2012 Olympics, when
everyone was waking up for team USA, Kobe had already gone through a 3 hour workout (Kobe
Bryant s Insane Work Ethic 3). To wrap up, athletes are severely motivated and prove it with their hard

Tricking And Tripping Claire Sterk Summary
Claire E. Sterk s article Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in Era of AIDS published by
Social Change Press in 2000 takes into account the patterns and procedures that anthropologists take
into practice during fieldwork. She provides some useful insights and learnt lessons during her studies
with prostitutes. She also provides a close and intimate account of their lives and mental state in their
own words. Her findings are substantiated with proper examples in the accounts of the daily lives of
these women. Unlike most student s expectation of fieldwork as a leisure activity at some serene
place, Sterk observes the pain associated with the lifestyle and brings into light some important
patterns and procedures that anthropologists must consider while interviewing a research group. Sterk
establishes her point of view about importance of general study of culture by provoking the essential
human quality of compassion. She does so by describing the prostitutes as not alien and showing fine
human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like other ordinary humans. She
emphasizes this theme by highlighting a poem written by a prostitute. The whole purpose of this initial
exercise is to create consideration among readers about the lives and activities of prostitutes. ... Show

When Sterk observed these women in their time of leisure and shows the aspects of their personality
outside their line of work it humanized the women and displayed that they were merely people who

Strike at San Fransisco State College Essay Strike at San Fransisco State College In the meantime at San Francisco State College, students in the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF), a coalition of African American, Latino, and Asian American student groups, began demanding reforms that addressed the concerns of students of color and the surrounding community. After more than a year of negotiating with the school and organizing students, they called a strike on November 6, 1968, that became the longest student strikein United States history. Hayakawa, one of the few faculty members willing to go back to work, felt it was his duty to cross the picket line and continue the education of the students who desired it. He believed the faculty had forgotten their primary mission teaching, conducting research, and pursuing academic excellence. On November 28, 1968, Hayakawa was named acting president of San Francisco State College by California Governor Ronald Reagan and the trustees of the California state college system. With no previous administrative or political experience, his selection was an unpopular choice among faculty members and students. Prior to his appointment, Hayakawa had served on a five person presidential selection committee whose members had reportedly agreed not to seek the office. Hayakawa denied any agreement had been made and accepted the job under extreme opprobrium from committee members. Hayakawa was viewed as eccentric in appearance and style. Wearing Hawaiian carnation leis and an Irish tam o shanter, his personal appearance was indicative of his personality. His first priority as acting president was to reopen the campus following Thanksgiving break ending the strike. To achieve this objective, he yielded on some student demands and rejected others. This, however, was unsatisfactory to student leaders, who employed 1,000 protesters to close the campus on the first day following from Thanksgiving break. Taking a firm stance, ... Self presentation is described as playing out a self to the reaction and anticipation of others (p. 32). Men and women both modify their self presentation to the reaction of others. In a classic study noted by Crawford of female college students who were provided with details of male students who were either desirable or undesirable as a potential date and who was characterized as having traditional or more modern values, According to the textbook the study found that, When women thought they would have the opportunity to meet the man, they changed their descriptions of themselves to fit the man s traditional or modern values but only if he was attractive (p.25). Catherine II, Empress of Russia, was born in Germany in 1729, but with the name of Sophia. She was the daughter of Prince Christian August and Princess Johanna Elizabeth. Since she was a princess, she was home schooled. She became very smart and free spirited. Nancy Whitelaw, the author of Catherine the Great spoke on Sophia s childhood and noted, Sophia loved to be in charge, and though some of her playmates said she was bossy, there was no doubt she was a natural leader (Whitelaw 15 16). When she was around the age of fifteen, she met Prince Karl Peter Ulrich of Russia. Ulrich s mother, Czarina of Russia, was trying to find a wife for her son. She knew her son was not fit for the throne, and the country would be devastated with him at the head. Whoever Ulrich married would earn the right to rule Russia (Whitelaw 18). After some consideration and suggestions, she decided that Sophia was the right girl for Ulrich. Even though her father did not like the fact that she would have to convert from Lutheran to Orthodox, he gave consent. She moved back to Russia with Ulrich, converted to Orthodox, and changed her name to Catherine. Catherine now had to give birth to a son as the heir to the throne, but it was going to be hard due to Ulrich s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Rawls And John Stuart Mill A very large and important idea in the political texts of philosophers is freedom, and the ways in which a society may be considered free in the first place. Two philosophers stand out in terms of their ideas of political freedom: John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Rawls and Mill both strive to convince us, the reader as to what form a society must take in order to maximize its freedom. Mill argues that the only restraints set upon people are those in order to prevent someone from doing direct harm to another1 . Rawls goes one step further, where he solves not only the idea of freedom but also the issue of equality in freedom that is not touched upon by previous philosophers. Although the ideas presented by John Rawls may seem far fetched in their mechanisms, I feel that his method of approach towards the idea of modern freedom not only builds upon the ideas of Mill, but also offers the most advanced solution to the problem to date. In order to properly explain the connections between Rawls and Mills, I will explain the ideas behind Mill s philosophy first. Mill states his initial point about freedom very clearly: The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. 2 Mill says, quite clearly, that the only time one s liberty (and in this case, freedom) may be infringed upon is when they are doing direct harm to another. This single statement is the underlying

Symbolism can be helpful in generating thoughts without needing deeper explanation from the author and symbols render interruption of the plot. In Ernest Hemingway s novel, The Sun Also Rises, symbolism plays a key role in the meaning and themes of the plot. The symbols can be widely interpreted and used in many different ways but all exclusively aluminate the final themes in the novel. Hemingway s use of bull fighting, post war handicaps and water throughout the novel directly relates to the character s feelings and actions in the basic plot while still alluding to deeper meanings. Floating I saw only the sky, and felt the drop and lift of the swells... The water was buoyant and cold. It felt as though you could never sink (241). His in depth descriptions of the water highlights the symbolism and showcases Jake s moments of peace. Water is also used as a symbol of purification through the character Brett. In the effort of the competition, the White Star Line came up with an idea of creating a massive, luxurious ship that would later be given the name The Royal Mail Steamer Titanic, or Titanic for short and as it is well known today. For example, the Weathermen, they used bombs to blow up symbols of the United States to instill terror into the government, to get Americans out of Vietnam War. However, the jihadist of al Qaeda crashed two planes into the World Trade Center to provoke fear into the US by showing weakness in our private transportation system and changing the lives of Americans. Nevertheless, the terror act of 9/11 has people preparing for more international terrorist attacks, but in the last 16 years the only terrorist attacks in the US have been domestic terrorism. This fear of international terrorism was a hot topic during the 2016 Presidential Election, where one party wanted to ban a religious group of people from entering the US. Yet, domestic terror attacks are by far more many than international ones: in our data set, only about 14% of the almost 82,000 terror incidents were international terror events (Liebert, Kokakos, Schulze, 2011, p. 1). This shows that citizens do not know the different between international terrorism and domestic terrorism, because if they did, there would more focus on domestic terrorism even though terrorism is so rare compared to other crimes (Newman Clark, 2008). • 17. Current Economic Conditions In The United States Current Economic Conditions As previously stated in the executive summary, the United States economy is currently stagnating. From week to week we may see a rise in one indicator while there is a fall in another indicator, but none of the rises or falls are drastic enough to have an overwhelming impact on the economy as a whole. Although the economy is not near as strong as it was before the 2008 2009 recession, arguably one of the biggest economic crises of the past decade, there has been much growth and strength throughout the past few years with this year being the first year in which the economy is in somewhat of a holding pattern. I believe, that even with the little growth and movement of the United States economy over the past year, it is still perhaps one of the strongest economies in the world at the moment. The rise and fall of GDP over a specific period of time is, in many cases, the number one indicator for how the economy is doing. Being the output of final goods and services, GDP works well with consumer confidence and provides a good idea as to the general health of the economy. By looking at Figure 1, we can see that GDP rose steeply after the 20008 2009 recession and has continued to remain strong with relatively little movement since 2010. In the most recent quarters, 2014 and 2015, GDP has declined a little, but the decline is in no way too drastic nor did it have any significant impact on the economy. • 21. Main Features Of Oligopoly Oligopoly: Oligopoly is a type of imperfect competition, wherein there are few sellers dealing either in homogeneous or differentiated products. The term oligopoly has been derived from the two Greek words, oligoi means few and poly means control. Thus, it means the control of the few organisations in the market. For example, oligopoly in India exists in the aviation industry where there are just a few players, such as Air India, Indigo, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, etc. All these airlines depend on each other for setting their pricing policies. This is because the prices are effected by the price of the competitors products. The reasons for difficult entry in the market are various legal, social and technological barriers. This also implies that the existing organisations have a complete control over the market. o Enhanced role of government: Under oligopolistic market structure, the government has a greater role as it acts as a guard to anti competitive behaviours of the oligopolists. It is often observed that oligopolists may engage in the illegal practice of collusion, where they together make production and pricing decisions. Oligopolists may start acting as a single organisation and further increase prices and profits. In 1987, Cherry Hill Elementary School in Baltimore, Maryland, became the first school to adopt a uniform policy. (Education Bug, 2010) After this school s implementation of a dress code, there was a dramatic increase in the use of school uniforms in the United States; which was inspired by former President Bill Clinton. President Clinton proposed a challenge to all public schools by saying, he challenges all of our schools to teach character education; along with good values and good citizenship. If it means that our teenagers will stop killing each other over designer labels, then schools should require students to wear a uniform everyday to school. (Brunsma, 2006) His speech was just the beginning of the very controversial uniform debate, and people on both sides of the arguments have tried hard to make sure that their case is heard. The main reason for implementing a school uniform policy would be to increase children s safety at school. Gang violence in schools is at an all time high. In 1989, a high school student from Baltimore was shot and wounded in a fight over a pair of sunglasses that cost $95.00. Since this incident, educators started restricting what students could wear. (Brunsma, 2006) By doing this, the violence in the school has decreased. According to Holly Charlonne with Life Script, she states that gangs have a need to wear a certain color to distinguish them from other neighborhood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Colonial Grievances Most of the framers of the constitution either attended or graduated college, were involved in the American Revolution, and had already been involved in the government. The Constitutional Convention was a meeting held in Philadelphia between May and September of 1787. There, delegates discussed revisions to the United States Government. The Constitutional Convention was held in order to address the problems of the weak central government that existed under the Articles of Confederation. Many of the ideas that were written into the United States Constitution were influenced and based on many important factors. This was because The Articles had a weak central government. The Articles of Confederation were created by the Continental Congress in 1777. The federal government did not have enough power in order to assemble the military. Congress mostly relied on the state militias for security because the Articles of Confederation did not have a national military. The Constitution allows the government to create a military. The United States government owns/controls its own military. In the Articles of Confederation every state had their own smaller military. The government can create and impose taxes. Government are able to make taxes as long as they are voted for and passed. The Articles of Confederation s central government could not put taxes on the states. Congress was the only branch of the central government and was unable to collect taxes to use during the war or to handle the government after the war. This letter was written by George Washington in 1787 and was sent to Henry Knox. He wrote that if government... is unable to enforce its laws; ... anarchy and confusion must prevail and every thing will be turned topsy turvey in that State (Document E). • 34. Pro Athletes Role Models A role model, as described by Google is a person looked to by others as an example to be imitated (hello read me and find a god damn source!!!). Charles Barkley, a professional basketball player, said in a popular Nike ad, I m not a role model. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn t mean I should raise your kids (Don t forget bout me u dipwad!!!). This sparked the debate; Should pro athletes be role models? Children need a true hero to look up to, and these athletes satisfy that need. These athletes show the features of a hero, not a criminal. Adolescents need athletes as their role models to emulate their positive traits. To begin, athletes do not only excel on the field, but they also show off their extraordinary assistance off ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Players appear to have the tendency to get arrested, and their careers and fans are devastated. But statistics don t lie. According to Tom Keane, a former Boston city councilor and Boston Globe Columnist, wrote this in an article: The rate of arrest of pro athletes for assault and domestic violence was less than half that of the general population. This applied for other crimes as well. It seems as if NFL players are committing so many crimes because every time they do, they make the news (Keane 2 3). So instead of breaking the law, these athletes are actually just training. An athlete usually work more than 40 hours a week for several months (Athletes and Sports Competitors 1). The motivation it requires to be an athlete doesn t stop here. You must be willing to work hard in the face of fatigue, boredom, and pain. Motivation will impact everything that influences your sports performance. Physical conditioning, technical and tactical training, and mental preparation (Taylor 1). Along with the motivation for the Grind , you must be willing to give up a big chunk of free time you spend with friends and family. You ll (also) have to follow a rigorous diet plan. You have to consume a precise amount of carbs, proteins, and fat (Anne 1). Along with diets, each athlete has a different work ethic, or plan for working out. Kobe Bryant arguably has one of the best. During the 2012 Olympics, when everyone was waking up for team USA, Kobe had already gone through a 3 hour workout (Kobe Bryant s Insane Work Ethic 3). To wrap up, athletes are severely motivated and prove it with their hard ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Tricking And Tripping Claire Sterk Summary Claire E. Sterk s article Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitution in Era of AIDS published by Social Change Press in 2000 takes into account the patterns and procedures that anthropologists take into practice during fieldwork. She provides some useful insights and learnt lessons during her studies with prostitutes. She also provides a close and intimate account of their lives and mental state in their own words. Her findings are substantiated with proper examples in the accounts of the daily lives of these women. Unlike most student s expectation of fieldwork as a leisure activity at some serene place, Sterk observes the pain associated with the lifestyle and brings into light some important patterns and procedures that anthropologists must consider while interviewing a research group. Sterk establishes her point of view about importance of general study of culture by provoking the essential human quality of compassion. She does so by describing the prostitutes as not alien and showing fine human qualities. Their habitual formations and mental qualities are like other ordinary humans. She emphasizes this theme by highlighting a poem written by a prostitute. The whole purpose of this initial exercise is to create consideration among readers about the lives and activities of prostitutes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time period prostitutes were seen as one of the greatest carriers of the disease, this lead to them being looked down upon greatly by the majority of society. When Sterk observed these women in their time of leisure and shows the aspects of their personality outside their line of work it humanized the women and displayed that they were merely people who are in an unfortunate ...
