The Triumph Of Seretse Khama And His Nation
Williams, A S. Colour Bar: The Triumph of Seretse Khama and His Nation., 2007. A.S Williams,
Colour Bar: The Triumph of Seretse Khama and His Nation London 1945 speaks of his experience in
Africa. He is the heir to the largest tribe of Bechuanaland (later Botswana). He returns from Britain
with an Englishwoman Ruth Williams. They both have to face the horrible rules and laws of colonial
power that tries to prevent their marriage. In the book Serets encourages Africans to record their
history for it is part of their soul. The book was chosen because he is one of the African leaders who
are calling for written accounts of Africa s history. His story exposes the ignorance and arrogance that
are still excisting in twentierth century African societies. These ignorance and arrogance are actively
suppressing the continent s growth and dividing the nations.Using the data collected from this book
will awaken the reader the suppressing of African freedom by European rules that is still present on
the continent.

The Market Street Railway And San Francisco
The Market Street Railway, Sutter Street Railroad, and the San Francisco San Mateo Railway merged
in 1902 to become the United Railroads of San Francisco (URR). The URR was created by the
aggressive capitalist consolidator and modernizer named Patrick Calhoun. An early project was to
make uniform the rolling stock and track gauges, which led to the abandonment of the last four miles
of horsecars that had been the backbone of transportation just a generation earlier. By this stage, the
company had changed hands again. Over the years many independent lines had been absorbed,
including the Clay Street Hill Railroad, the Presidio Ferries Railway, and the Ferries and Cliff House
Railway. At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, the great San Francisco

Stp Market Segmentation
MARKET SEGMENTATION, TARGETING AND POSITIONING MARKET SEGMENTATION
When it comes to marketing strategies, most people spontaneously think about the 4P (Product, Price,
Place, Promotion) maybe extended by three more Ps for marketing services (People, Processes,
Physical Evidence).
Market segmentation and the identification of target markets, however, are an important element of
each marketing strategy. They are the basis for determining any particular marketing mix. Basic steps
in marketing strategy are as follows:
* ATTRIBUTES OF EFFECTIVE SEGMENTATION
Market segmentation is resorted to for achieving certain practical purpose. For example, it has to be ...
Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Segmentation also helps the marketer assess as to what extend existing offer from competitors match
the needs of different customer segments. The marketer can thus identify the relatively less satisfied
segments and succeed by concentrating on them and satisfying their needs.
6. Benefits the customer as well:
Segmentation brings benefits not only to the marketer, but to the customer as well. When
segmentation attains higher levels of sophistication and perfection, customers and companies can
conveniently settle down with each other, as at such a stage, they can safely rely on each other s
discrimination. The firm can anticipate the wants of the customers and the customers can anticipate
the capabilities of the firm.
7. Sustainable customer relationships in all phases of customer life cycle: Customers change their
preferences and patterns of behavior over time. Organizations that serve different segments along a
customer s life cycle can guide their customers from stage to stage by always offering them a special
solution for their particular needs. For example, many car manufacturers offer a product range that
caters for the needs of all phases of a customer life cycle: first car for early teens, fun car for young
professionals, family car for young families, etc. Skin care cosmetics brands often offer special series
for babies, teens, normal skin, and elder skin.

Mary Church Terrell Research Paper
Mary Church Terrell was born to her parents Robert Reed Church and Louisa Ayers on September 23,
1863 in Memphis, Tennessee. Mary Church Terrell was known for many things, such as being the first
African American woman to obtain a college degree, her advocacy for civil rights, and her book titled,
A Colored Woman in a White World. With her father being a wealthy business person who was
technically considered the first African American millionaire in the south, Mary was taught about
being a hard worker, motivated, and the importance and value of a good education at an early age.
When she was six years old, her parents sent her to the Antioch College Model School in Yellow
Springs, Ohio. She later went on to attend Oberlin College in Ohio. And in 1884, she became one of
the first African American women to earn a college degree. Four years later she earned her master s
degree in education. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Porter s Five Forces Essay
The Five Forces framework is a useful starting point for strategic analysis even where profit criteria
may not apply (Johnson, Scholes Whittington, 2008, p. 60). The factors that are influencing a
company within an industry can be extremely various. In addition to the competition among the
existing competitors, Porter s Five Forces model identifies another four forces that characterize the
intensity of competition within an industry: Bargaining power of Supplier, Bargaining power of Buyer,
Threat of Substitutes and Threat of new Entrants (Porter, 1979).
The power of suppliers refers to suppliers power in determining and leading the price of raw material,

The number of alternative products and their replacement cost influences the replacement behavior. If
the cost of switching to alternative products is low for the customer or the company, the risk of
replacement will be very high. In contrast, if a replacement is not easy, it boosts the power of the
company in this industry. Similarly, the threat of substitution is reduced at Cisco, as customers are
now disinclined to substitute, particularly in face of the increased customer service. While products
made by Cisco are not easily substitutable, products itself reach the end of their life cycle for number
of reasons. Market demands, technology innovation or the products simply mature over time and are
easily replaced by functionally richer technology. Substitute of products is moderate to low, with an
exception of disruptive technology having potential to completely substitute the

The Gospel Of Luke Reflection Essay
The theme of the gospel of Luke talks about the journey of the life of Jesus, Christ. His death, burial,
and resurrection. Moreover, his ministry, teachings and parables. As a historian, and physician, Luke
was not only eloquent in his writing about Jesus; he also took interest in his early life. The Gospel of
Luke also depict Jesus as compassionate, caring, and loving. Likewise, Luke not only put Jesus at the
heart of the Jewish world during the first century, but also at the heart of the Roman world, where with
the Christian gospel exploded.
The first event would be one of his many parables. The Good Samaritan, which is consider one of his
most intriguing in the gospel of Luke. It does not only teaches us a moral lesson, besides, it also serves
as a guidance in our walk with God and our fellowmen. Additionally, we are to go into the world and
do well to all men, no matter who they are. The next event would be that of his death. His death on the
cross did not only show his love and compassion for humanity, besides humility. A man with no sin
took the sin of the world, sharing his blood for the remission of our sins. He was not only obedient to
the one (his father) who sent him, also death on the cross. And being found in human form, he
humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross (Philippians
2:8).
The gospel of Luke was obviously written for the Gentiles. Nevertheless, also featuring Theophilus,
who was a lover of God, a

The total estimated repair costs of the one eruption was ≈1.1 billion dollars. 1.1 billion dollars is a lot
of money. In fact, the damages cost more than what Trump used for his campaign. Before MSH
erupted, the volcano was an almost perfect cone, until it erupted and the whole North side exploded,
lost 1,300 feet of elevation. 4 billion board feet of lumber was destroyed. The mudslides were no
better, mud came flowing from the volcano at 50mph to 80mph and destroyed everything in its path.
The May 18th, 1980 eruption was quite interesting. The eruption killed a total of 57 people. Everyone
that was killed was between the ages of 9 and 83. Most of the people that died inhaled ash, and the ash
got into their lungs, which is probably not good. There was a lot of ash that came out of MSH that day.
Central and Eastern Washington was covered in 3 to 5 inches of gritty fine ash. Not including the
estimated 540 million tons of ash that came out of MSH in the form of a mushroom cloud that reached

Essay on Investigating the Effect of Alcohol on Heartbeat...
Investigating the Effect of Alcohol on Heartbeat of Daphnia
Daphnia are the organisms that are involved in this experiment to find out what effect alcohol has on
their heartbeat. It is easy to study the effects of alcohol on the heart of Daphnia as the organ can be
easily seen through the transparent body of Daphnia. The number of heartbeats may be counted before
submersion in alcohol and after submersion in alcohol to investigate the effect of alcohol.
Daphnia belong to the Phylum Arthropoda and are Branchiopoda which belong to the class, Crustacea.
Daphnia are invertebrates and also have an exoskeleton, jointed appendages, a dorsal heart and open
blood system.

This can also be related to Daphnia in the same way. Therefore I predict that as the concentration of
alcohol surrounding the Daphnia increases the greater the percentage decrease of heartbeat.
ABSTRACT
The aim of the investigation was to find out the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of Daphnia. My
hypothesis was, as the concentration of alcohol increases the lower the heartbeat of the Daphnia will
fall. To test my prediction I carried out 25 individual experiments which were all carried out using the
same procedure but varying the alcohol concentration of the solution. To investigate how alcohol
concentration affects the heartbeat of Daphnia I recorded the heartbeat of 25 Daphnia for a period of 7
minutes. This included 1 minute before submersion in alcohol, 3 minutes during submersion in
alcohol and 3 minutes after submersion in alcohol. I then found the percentage decrease of the
heartbeat of the Daphnia from the resting heart rate. At the highest concentration of ethanol solution,
1x10 1gcm 3 the greatest percentage decrease of heart rate was 86.5%. The results in general show
that increasing the concentration of alcohol decreases the heartbeat of the Daphnia lower.
METHOD
Before starting the practical part of the investigation the different concentrations of alcohol that

Timeless And Timelessness In Literature
One theme in literature, and British literature alike, is timelessness. Many pieces that are famous have
been passed down through generations and readers all over the world still relate to it through love or
comedy. Two works that capture timelessness and universality are A Valediction: Forbidding
Mourning written by John Donne and Much Ado About Nothing written by William Shakespeare.
What often draws people to literature is raw emotion. A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning perfectly
fits the raw emotion and timelessness with true love. This poem by John Donne captivates readers
imaginations through his idea of love extending past death and the eternal love of two people. Love
songs and love stories endure time because they are always relevant because love is always relevant.
Donne s poem can be used in a variety of situations and has endured because of the sweetness and
vulnerability of it. Donne writes, Thy firmness makes my circle just, / And makes me end where I
begun, (Donne 35 36). These lines are one part of a conceit that likens his and his wife s love to a
compass and that she completes him. If people are in love, romantic gestures and nice words can make
the love grow stronger, so the message of Donne continues to be passed on through people in love.
Poems like this make hearts swell and, on the education side, use many aspects of figurative language.
A Valediction continues being taught because of the beautiful use of language and metaphors and how

There are Compelling reasons why law enforcement leaders believe that time has come to alter the

characteristics of crime and violence that affect these communities
Throughout history individuals have been expected to follow the rules of the majority, the demands to

English men. One contributor was Henry Fielding, who was appointed as a Magistrate to Bow Street

controlling crime required the cooperation of the public, a strong police force and the elimination of

Depending on Horseshoe Crabs and Bait for Nutrition
Recently, various user groups have relied on horseshoe crabs for bait and nutrition. While concerns
have arisen that the horseshoe crab populations are declining, management of the American species of
horseshoe crabs has been surrounded by controversy (Davis et al., 2006). Historically, horseshoe crabs
have been considered a trash fish , not worthy of resources to establish their population data. As a
result, reporting regulations and harvest restrictions associated with this fishery have been lacking
(Baker et al., 2004).
Catch records for the Limulus commercial fishery in the Delaware Bay declined from 4 million
horseshoe crabs per year to less than 100,000 between the 1870s and the 1960s (Shuster and Botton,
1985). It wasn t until the second half of the 20th century that a commercial fishery on horseshoe crabs
developed to provide bait for use in catching eel (Anguilla rostrada) and whelk (Busycon spp.)
(Ferrari and Targett, 2003). The horseshoe crab commercial fishery has increased dramatically
beginning in 1990 (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). A variety of methods are employed by fishermen to
capture horseshoe crabs: trawls, dredges, hands, and gillnets (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Entire
beaches covered in horseshoe crabs can easily be harvested by hand since these animals have
essentially no defense mechanism (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Overall, one million Limulus were

Character Foils In Vaclav And Lena
In the novel Vaclav and Lena, Haley Tanner employs the use of many character foils. Characters are
placed into similar roles and the behavior of one character accentuates the traits of another, more
major character. This is particularly prominent among the women who act as Lena s guardians. Two of
the most important women in Lena s life are Radoslava and Rasia. Radoslava Dvorakovskaya is an
elderly woman who Lena lives with when she is very young. Radoslava passes away and Lena moves
in with her aunt. In her new neighborhood, she meets a boy named Vaclav and his mother, Rasia, who
quickly becomes a guardian of Lena as well. Radoslava is a foil for Rasia because while both serve as
maternal figures for Lena, Radoslava s failures as a caring guardian highlight Rasia s devotion and
kindness.

Radoslava is quick to yell at Lena, saying, Yelena! I am old and I am dying, and you have ruined my
last years of peace (169). Radoslava blames Lena for everything and considers her to be a stain on her

that she does not want to be in this situation. On the other hand, Rasia and her son Vaclav enjoys
helping Lena and consider it a blessing rather than a burden. They are more than willing to meet Lena
and become acquainted with her, both of them knowing that they were doing something nice (68).
Rasia and Vaclav find pleasure in knowing that they are doing a good deed. Unlike Radoslava, Rasia
is unconditionally caring. Radoslava only does things for her own good and the moment things get

as a harsh contrast to the way that Rasia willingly takes on the burden of acting like a mother for

Macbeth Women Influence
Impact of Women Influence in Macbeth
William Shakespeare s play, Macbeth is one of his most well known plays because of its infamously
unconventional gender roles. These roles cause tremendous chaos proving Shakespeare s true motive
to keep men and women in their place. Women are an important part of the play because Shakespeare
displays them as a huge influence on Macbeth s courage and decisions that will eventually impact his
actions and lead him to tremendous chaos. This change of gender roles is displayed through the three
witches, Lady Macbeth, and how the role disruption had a negative impact on Macbeth s life and
manliness.
First of all, the three witches known as the weird sisters were the first women to appear in Macbeth

Lady Macbeth gives the idea of murdering King Duncan after receiving the letter stating that there is a
possibility for Macbeth to become king. At first, Macbeth does not want to follow the murdering act.
He believes that he will be betraying and breaking the relationship between the king and him.
However, when Lady Macbeth finds him refusing to continue with the plan, she starts teasing him
about his cowardly attitude, Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valor as thou art in
desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine
own esteem, letting I dare not wait upon I would like the poor cat i th adage? (1, 7, 40 45). She
influences and tempts Macbeth to continue with the plan. Lady Macbeth offensive words towards
Macbeth s manliness creates a feeling of insecurity in him which leads Macbeth to change his
thoughts and continue with the plan. Lady Macbeth shows her authority in the relation, she challenges
Macbeth s manliness by corrupting and encouraging him to murder. She shows a very ambitious,
aggressive, influential, and authoritative attitude. The Elizabethan society depicts women as charming,
delicate, and heart of sympathy and nurture. Lady Macbeth does not fulfill the expectations and
therefore Lady Macbeth is seen as a corrupt woman. She is selfish, ambitious, and over control. She
does not show the feminism a woman should have, but instead, she guides the murder plan and makes

An Army Of One-Me Analysis
Nowadays, some people have strong opinions on the increasingly problems caused by the Generation
Me because of their high self esteem. Jean Twenge analyzes the self esteem in her essay An Army of

us to rethink why self esteem is such a severe problem to the generation me, but benefit the boomers.
Though it may sounds hard to understand what causes the difference, but by viewing Maggie Nelson s

A misleading immediate context can give false sense to the GenMe, while a positive immediate
context can give solutions to problems. When saying immediate context , Gladwell claims it as
Specific and relatively small elements in the environment (162). These small elements, or signals, are
serving as tipping points, which shows that changes are always possible if we can simply change the
immediate context. That is, we should always notice the both sides of immediate context. For
example, when the crime rate was extremely high in the New York, David Gunn realized that graffiti
in the subway system is one of the small elements that send disorders to the public. On the one side,
The graffiti was symbolic of the collapse of the system (Gladwell 152). On another side, the graffiti
also gives a solution to the crime problem that if we clean up the graffiti, signals of disorders will be
changes immediately into good orders. Similarly, most of the GenMe misunderstand the meaning of
high self esteem because they received wrong signals from the immediate context. Twenge lists some
examples of the educational immediate context by saying that, In the United States, office stores have
started carrying large stocks of purple pens, as some teachers say that red ink is too scary for children

Racial Profiling by Police is Not Justified Essay
Even the United States struggles with issues of racial discrimination despite being a society highly
based on immigrants and multicultural diversity. On one hand, people frown on treatment based on
race, whether that is on an individual or group level. On the other, people are tired and annoyed by the
seemingly constant call of discrimination. All of these feelings culminate into the debate pertaining to
the use of racial profiling. Likewise, there are some individuals that hold a certain level of acceptance
in regard to racial profiling. However, what is lost in the process because of that acceptance? There are
many components that need to be thought about in reference to the use of racial profiling. In addition,

In relation to the debate of racial profiling, Taylor and Whitney define racial profiling as the practice
of questioning blacks in disproportionate numbers in expectation that they are more likely than people
of other races to be criminals (Taylor Whitney, 2002). Statistics show that African Americans and
Hispanics commit more crime than Caucasians, with 90% of the 1.7 million interracial crimes
stemming from the hands of African American men. Even looking at these numbers, does that make it
okay for the police to arrest and interrogate these racial minorities at such a high frequency? Where
are these statistics coming from? How accurate are they? Does the media provide a skewed analysis of
these findings? These are the types of questions that need to be addressed in regard to evaluating the
validity of racial profiling.
The annual National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) has been the primary method for gathering
data and providing these staggering statistics. The NCVS provides information gathered from the
victim, which includes information on crimes that went unreported to the police. The Uniform Crime
Report (UCR) is also a valid reference for gathering crime information within the United States. The
UCR only has information regarding crimes that were reported to the police, as well as arrests. Both
forums are used by the FBI. In addition, researchers use this information for their research. Even

Importance Of Music In My Life
Music has always been a big part of my life. I remember the radio or record player always playing
music at home growing up. I sang in the choir at church and school. I also played the trumpet all
through middle school, I was even first chair in eighth grade. Once I was in high school, attending
concerts became a regular outing for me and my friends. I have continued to keep music in my life to
this day.
The first period of my life represented is early childhood. I honestly could not think of one song I may
have loved between ages 0 to 4. Any music that I would have listened to would have been what my
parents liked at the time. I decided to look up hit songs for the year I was 4 years old. Looking through
the list I remembered that I loved Chicago s song Saturday in the Park . Every summer we traveled to
Maine growing up to visit my Grandma, and this song was my favorite. I specifically remember
playing in the garage and listening to this song over and over again. Every time I hear this song I think
of Summer and all the fun I had growing up. It was released in 1972, but was still popular when I was
in this time period. I still love it.
The second period of my life represented is elementary school. I loved Bonnie Tyler s Total Eclipse of
the Heart . These were the days of listening to the top forty with Casey Kasem on Saturday morning
and taping songs you liked. I had to tape this song so I could listen to it over and over. I loved her deep

Satz Surrogacy
There are many issues in modern times that are on questionable grounds regarding the moral and
ethical reasoning for such arguments. One of those ethical debates is in regards to commercial
surrogacy. Surrogacy itself is a morally sound gesture; it is meant to be a way of a family acquiring a
child that they would not be able to reproduce on their own, involving a third party. It is when the
child is paid for by that family and the third person is compensated that the issues arrive. Should
surrogacy be an available marketing resource? What justifies marketing a woman s sexual capacities?
In this paper, I will be discussing the argument presented by Debra Satz who is opposed to surrogacy,
in the counter argument to support it. Surrogacy, by definition, is the practice by which a woman
(called a surrogate mother) becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby in order to give it to someone
who cannot have children (3). There are two types of surrogacy, gestational and traditional. The first is
one where the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate mother. The second form,
traditional, is when the surrogate mother is impregnated, whether the method is naturally or
artificially, but the child is related to the surrogate given that the surrogate is the biological mother. In
the case of Satz s argument, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also unexceptional due to there being many other forms of employment that have been female
dominated; for example care work, cleaning, secretary jobs, and sexual related work. Although there
are a large percentage of females in these fields, the individual does not have to be female to obtain
these jobs. This is not the case in terms of surrogacy. It requires the biological characteristics that only
females have. This means that surrogates will tend to be females. This makes gender inequality
arguments particularly salient when it comes to debates about

Similarities Between Hamlet And A Fine Balance
Finding Your Purpose
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear
for newer and richer experience (Eleanor Roosevelt). Experience in our lives help shape us into people
we are today. In the novels, Hamlet by William Shakespeare and A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
the characters are presented with difficulties due to the effects of the emergency. The aftermath of
being in a state of emergency results in the countries of Denmark and India experiencing corrupt
government, death and violence, forcing the characters to find the purpose for their lives.
After living in a state of emergency, Hamlet and Dina use the effects of corrupt government to realize
their purpose in life. In Hamlet, King Hamlet is killed by Claudius so that he can become the king of
Denmark, and young Hamlet is left reeling with grief. Hamlet uses his grief to avenge his father and
expose Claudius for corrupting the government of Denmark. Hamlet promises his father,
Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as swift /As meditation or the thoughts of love, / May sweep to
my revenge (Shakespeare, 1.5. 29 31).
Instead of being held back by his grief, Hamlet turns his anger into something positive by revealing
Claudius true character to Denmark. Hamlet s reaction to the murder of his father helps him to find his
purpose in life, by freeing Denmark from the corrupt government. Similar to Hamlet, in A Fine
Balance, the characters and other

The Hopelessness Theory of Depression
The hopelessness theory of depression is a reformulated theory of helplessness and depression.
Hopelessness depression is a proposed subset of depression with strong implications about the power
of perception. There are many negative symptoms, which accompany hopelessness depression.
Hopelessness is the sufficient cause of hopelessness depression and is a phenomenon, which deserves
a lot of attention. This paper reviews the various elements of hopelessness depression, reviews its
causes and consequences, explores treatment courses and takes at the implications of hopelessness.
CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES
Hopelessness depression is characterized by the feelings of hopelessness. The feeling of hopelessness
can be arrived to through many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proximate causes are closer to the onset of the symptoms than distal causes. In addition to the time
gap between the cause and the manifested symptoms another factor to consider is to what extent do
the events contribute to the onset of the depressive symptoms. It is important to remember that the
impact of hopelessness depression symptoms on an individual is a direct product his/her perception of
the impact of the life event.
SYMPTOMS
Hopelessness depression is characterized by two distinguished symptoms: a) retarded motivation and
b) sad affect. These two symptoms come from the belief that motivation to try will be worthless and
sadness is derived from this sense of a bleak future. Such a hopeless attitude can also result in lowered
self esteem especially if they feel as though they will not succeed in various activities in relation to
their peers. The length of the disorder ranges depending on how lasting the event is perceived to be
and the lack of social support
TREATMENT
Since negative life events are theorized to bring the feeling of hopelessness, positive life events are
thus presumed to bring on the feelings of hopefulness. Essentially, to prevent the manifestation of
depressive symptomatology, the hopeless individual must perceive the life event as an occurrence that
is finite in nature and can be controlled with sensible amount of motivation. An extension of this
method would involve addressing the behavior of

Female Genital Circumcision Female genital circumcision (FGC) is a cultural ritual that is performed
to the vast majority of women within the countries of Sudan, Kenya, Mali, Benin, Togo, and parts of

upon a person s beliefs. This ritual has been highly controversial for many years especially in the
western society, due to the health risks that women may have to go through. Doctor Gruenbaum, and

world. It is highly concentrated in North of Africa; however, it has existed also in Middle Eastern

Oman, Iraqi Kurdistan, amongst some Bedouin women in Israel, and was also practiced by the

FGC is also practiced among Bohra Muslim populations in parts of India and Pakistan, and amongst

Taking a Look at Conflict Resolution
To manage these conflict styles; avoidance, accommodation, aggression, and collaboration
management styles are used. Roommates use these styles when dealing with conflict. The style they
choose relates to how they will use text messaging in conflict and how they would like their face to be
perceived by the individual involved in the conflict. When a roommate chooses avoidance they are
pretending the conflict does not exist and will avoid any form of communication for fear of their face
being perceived negatively. We see an explanation of this from Erving Goffman where he proposed an
idea of facework as a social performance where we are all actors. He offered a cooperative principle
where people agree to support each other s performance or face. To not support each other s face is to
disrupt the entire scene, because no one can continue in performance when others are embarrassed or
shamed (Cupach Metts, 1994). Based on the conflict modes of Thomas and Kilmann, there are five
styles of conflict management: avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, competing and

Milton Friedman, The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits
In the article, The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Profits, Friedman states that
businessmen believe that they are defending free enterprise when they proclaim that business is not
concerned merely with profit but also with promoting desirable social ends. This social responsibility
is defined as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which is the belief that corporations owe a
greater duty to their communities and stakeholders by having a social conscience. This, among other
things, includes being environmentally responsible, contributing to non profit organizations, and
eliminating discrimination.
Friedman argues that only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because corporations are established to profit and shareholders invest money with expectations of a
greater return, managers cannot be given a directive to be socially responsible without providing
specific criteria of checks and balances to which needs to adhere. Therefore, it is imperative to the
success of a corporation for managers to not act solely but rather to act within the policies of the
shareholders.
What Friedman implies is that shareholders should only be concerned with maximizing profits and not
be obligated to be socially responsible. In that case, the manager would only have one priority, to
maximize profits. However, what if that manager determined that social endeavors is the best option
to maximize profits? This would make the corporation socially responsible while still maintaining
maximum profits. The argument presented by Friedman in this case is that while the manager is
performing as expected by maximizing profits, this type of social responsibility is frequently a cloak
for actions that are justified on other grounds rather than a reason for those actions.
This cloak refers to corporations acting socially responsible but for the sole purpose of making profits
rather than performing such endeavors for the sole purpose of benefiting society. An example would
be a solar company providing free electricity to a campus in exchange for use land to promote

Masculinity And Its Impact On Society
Women freely express themselves by chatting about their insecurities and issues, but as for men, they
don t meet up and start listing their concerns. It s uncommon for men to voice their emotions and they
re heavily criticized when they do. Social platforms and the media have deeply influenced today s
generations by changing their perspectives of masculinity. Masculinity is becoming an ongoing debate
on what it means to be masculine. Masculine traits are defined as having qualities appropriate to or
usually associated with a man. These qualities include being strong, rugged, dominant, and powerful.
Social platforms and media have defined masculinity over the years to standardize the ideal male body
type, appearance, social norms, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The accepted male type buys brand clothes, flashy cars, is heterosexual, handsome, tall, with pretty
girlfriends, athletic, and strong. These characteristics create a social rank in schools, workplaces, and
groups of friends (Phillips, 514). It is not ideal for everyone to become popular, many are outcasts and
are not accepted because they do not fit this criterion. This has created the list of outcasts male traits:
homosexual, weakling, wears glasses, unfashionable, unathletic, emotional, and no attachments with
girls whatsoever (Phillips, 513 514). The average guy spends too much time trying to meet these
unrealistic expectations and this causes a decrease in one s self esteem. These traits are often seen on
social platforms that have caused men to look at themselves and ask, Am I good enough? Do girls find
me attractive? These social norms have created unhealthy and unrealistic ideals for men. Myers
mentioned in his article that this generation of young discouraged, angry men feeling abandoned in
today s norms. Male movie stars and athletes have further influenced the masculine norms. In a male s
perspective, liking a feminine color, feminine behavior, or listening to girly music is considered to be
less manly. Males are taught to be the man of the house, strong, powerful, but sometimes they re
belittled by society because of their incapabilities for some tasks and all the power is

A.S Williams, Colour Bar: The Triumph of Seretse Khama and His Nation London 1945 speaks of his experience in Africa. He is the heir to the largest tribe of Bechuanaland (later Botswana). He returns from Britain with an Englishwoman Ruth Williams. They both have to face the horrible rules and laws of colonial power that tries to prevent their marriage. In the book Serets encourages Africans to record their history for it is part of their soul. The factors that are influencing a company within an industry can be extremely various. In addition to the competition among the existing competitors, Porter s Five Forces model identifies another four forces that characterize the intensity of competition within an industry: Bargaining power of Supplier, Bargaining power of Buyer, Threat of Substitutes and Threat of new Entrants (Porter, 1979). The Gospel of Luke also depict Jesus as compassionate, caring, and loving. The first event would be one of his many parables. The Good Samaritan, which is consider one of his most intriguing in the gospel of Luke. It does not only teaches us a moral lesson, besides, it also serves as a guidance in our walk with God and our fellowmen. Additionally, we are to go into the world and do well to all men, no matter who they are. The next event would be that of his death. His death on the cross did not only show his love and compassion for humanity, besides humility. A man with no sin took the sin of the world, sharing his blood for the remission of our sins. He was not only obedient to the one (his father) who sent him, also death on the cross. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). The gospel of Luke was obviously written for the Gentiles. Investigating the Effect of Alcohol on Heartbeat of Daphnia Daphnia are the organisms that are involved in this experiment to find out what effect alcohol has on their heartbeat. ABSTRACT The aim of the investigation was to find out the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of Daphnia. My hypothesis was, as the concentration of alcohol increases the lower the heartbeat of the Daphnia will fall. To test my prediction I carried out 25 individual experiments which were all carried out using the same procedure but varying the alcohol concentration of the solution. To investigate how alcohol concentration affects the heartbeat of Daphnia I recorded the heartbeat of 25 Daphnia for a period of 7 minutes. This included 1 minute before submersion in alcohol, 3 minutes during submersion in alcohol and 3 minutes after submersion in alcohol. I then found the percentage decrease of the heartbeat of the Daphnia from the resting heart rate. At the highest concentration of ethanol solution, 1x10 1gcm 3 the greatest percentage decrease of heart rate was 86.5%. The results in general show that increasing the concentration of alcohol decreases the heartbeat of the Daphnia lower. • 15. Timeless And Timelessness In Literature One theme in literature, and British literature alike, is timelessness. Many pieces that are famous have been passed down through generations and readers all over the world still relate to it through love or comedy. Two works that capture timelessness and universality are A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning written by John Donne and Much Ado About Nothing written by William Shakespeare. What often draws people to literature is raw emotion. A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning perfectly fits the raw emotion and timelessness with true love. This poem by John Donne captivates readers imaginations through his idea of love extending past death and the eternal love of two people. Love songs and love stories endure time because they are always relevant because love is always relevant. Donne s poem can be used in a variety of situations and has endured because of the sweetness and vulnerability of it. Donne writes, Thy firmness makes my circle just, / And makes me end where I begun, (Donne 35 36). These lines are one part of a conceit that likens his and his wife s love to a compass and that she completes him. If people are in love, romantic gestures and nice words can make the love grow stronger, so the message of Donne continues to be passed on through people in love. Poems like this make hearts swell and, on the education side, use many aspects of figurative language. While concerns have arisen that the horseshoe crab populations are declining, management of the American species of horseshoe crabs has been surrounded by controversy (Davis et al., 2006). Historically, horseshoe crabs have been considered a trash fish , not worthy of resources to establish their population data. As a result, reporting regulations and harvest restrictions associated with this fishery have been lacking (Baker et al., 2004). Catch records for the Limulus commercial fishery in the Delaware Bay declined from 4 million horseshoe crabs per year to less than 100,000 between the 1870s and the 1960s (Shuster and Botton, 1985). It wasn t until the second half of the 20th century that a commercial fishery on horseshoe crabs developed to provide bait for use in catching eel (Anguilla rostrada) and whelk (Busycon spp.) (Ferrari and Targett, 2003). The horseshoe crab commercial fishery has increased dramatically beginning in 1990 (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). A variety of methods are employed by fishermen to capture horseshoe crabs: trawls, dredges, hands, and gillnets (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Entire beaches covered in horseshoe crabs can easily be harvested by hand since these animals have essentially no defense mechanism (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). I sang in the choir at church and school. I also played the trumpet all through middle school, I was even first chair in eighth grade. Once I was in high school, attending concerts became a regular outing for me and my friends. I have continued to keep music in my life to this day. The first period of my life represented is early childhood. I honestly could not think of one song I may have loved between ages 0 to 4. Any music that I would have listened to would have been what my parents liked at the time. I decided to look up hit songs for the year I was 4 years old. Looking through the list I remembered that I loved Chicago s song Saturday in the Park . Every summer we traveled to Maine growing up to visit my Grandma, and this song was my favorite. I specifically remember playing in the garage and listening to this song over and over again. Every time I hear this song I think of Summer and all the fun I had growing up. It was released in 1972, but was still popular when I was in this time period. I still love it. The second period of my life represented is elementary school. • 31. Satz Surrogacy There are many issues in modern times that are on questionable grounds regarding the moral and ethical reasoning for such arguments. One of those ethical debates is in regards to commercial surrogacy. Surrogacy itself is a morally sound gesture; it is meant to be a way of a family acquiring a child that they would not be able to reproduce on their own, involving a third party. It is when the child is paid for by that family and the third person is compensated that the issues arrive. Should surrogacy be an available marketing resource? What justifies marketing a woman s sexual capacities? In this paper, I will be discussing the argument presented by Debra Satz who is opposed to surrogacy, in the counter argument to support it. Surrogacy, by definition, is the practice by which a woman (called a surrogate mother) becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby in order to give it to someone who cannot have children (3). There are two types of surrogacy, gestational and traditional. The first is one where the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate mother. The second form, traditional, is when the surrogate mother is impregnated, whether the method is naturally or artificially, but the child is related to the surrogate given that the surrogate is the biological mother. In the case of Satz s argument, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although there are a large percentage of females in these fields, the individual does not have to be female to obtain these jobs. This is not the case in terms of surrogacy. It requires the biological characteristics that only females have. This means that surrogates will tend to be females. This makes gender inequality arguments particularly salient when it comes to debates about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Similarities Between Hamlet And A Fine Balance Finding Your Purpose The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience (Eleanor Roosevelt). Experience in our lives help shape us into people we are today. In the novels, Hamlet by William Shakespeare and A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry the characters are presented with difficulties due to the effects of the emergency. The aftermath of being in a state of emergency results in the countries of Denmark and India experiencing corrupt government, death and violence, forcing the characters to find the purpose for their lives. After living in a state of emergency, Hamlet and Dina use the effects of corrupt government to realize their purpose in life. In Hamlet, King Hamlet is killed by Claudius so that he can become the king of Denmark, and young Hamlet is left reeling with grief. Hamlet uses his grief to avenge his father and expose Claudius for corrupting the government of Denmark. Hamlet promises his father, Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as swift /As meditation or the thoughts of love, / May sweep to my revenge (Shakespeare, 1.5. 29 31). Instead of being held back by his grief, Hamlet turns his anger into something positive by revealing Claudius true character to Denmark. Hamlet s reaction to the murder of his father helps him to find his purpose in life, by freeing Denmark from the corrupt government. Similar to Hamlet, in A Fine Balance, the characters and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Proximate causes are closer to the onset of the symptoms than distal causes. In addition to the time gap between the cause and the manifested symptoms another factor to consider is to what extent do the events contribute to the onset of the depressive symptoms. It is important to remember that the impact of hopelessness depression symptoms on an individual is a direct product his/her perception of the impact of the life event. SYMPTOMS Hopelessness depression is characterized by two distinguished symptoms: a) retarded motivation and b) sad affect. These two symptoms come from the belief that motivation to try will be worthless and sadness is derived from this sense of a bleak future. Such a hopeless attitude can also result in lowered self esteem especially if they feel as though they will not succeed in various activities in relation to their peers. The length of the disorder ranges depending on how lasting the event is perceived to be and the lack of social support TREATMENT Since negative life events are theorized to bring the feeling of hopelessness, positive life events are thus presumed to bring on the feelings of hopefulness. Essentially, to prevent the manifestation of depressive symptomatology, the hopeless individual must perceive the life event as an occurrence that is finite in nature and can be controlled with sensible amount of motivation. • 39. Taking a Look at Conflict Resolution To manage these conflict styles; avoidance, accommodation, aggression, and collaboration management styles are used. Roommates use these styles when dealing with conflict. The style they choose relates to how they will use text messaging in conflict and how they would like their face to be perceived by the individual involved in the conflict. When a roommate chooses avoidance they are pretending the conflict does not exist and will avoid any form of communication for fear of their face being perceived negatively. We see an explanation of this from Erving Goffman where he proposed an idea of facework as a social performance where we are all actors. He offered a cooperative principle where people agree to support each other s performance or face. To not support each other s face is to disrupt the entire scene, because no one can continue in performance when others are embarrassed or shamed (Cupach Metts, 1994). Based on the conflict modes of Thomas and Kilmann, there are five styles of conflict management: avoiding, accommodating, collaborating, competing and compromising. Accommodation happens when a person attempts to satisfy the other person s concerns at the expense of their own, Avoiding is where a person sidesteps the conflict without trying to satisfy either person s concern, Compromising is when the person partially satisfies both people s concerns, Collaborating is when a person tries to find a win win solution that satisfies both people s concerns, and Competing ... Milton Friedman, The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits In the article, The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Profits, Friedman states that businessmen believe that they are defending free enterprise when they proclaim that business is not concerned merely with profit but also with promoting desirable social ends. This, among other things, includes being environmentally responsible, contributing to non profit organizations, and eliminating discrimination. Friedman argues that only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because corporations are established to profit and shareholders invest money with expectations of a greater return, managers cannot be given a directive to be socially responsible without providing specific criteria of checks and balances to which needs to adhere. Therefore, it is imperative to the success of a corporation for managers to not act solely but rather to act within the policies of the shareholders. What Friedman implies is that shareholders should only be concerned with maximizing profits and not be obligated to be socially responsible. In that case, the manager would only have one priority, to maximize profits. However, what if that manager determined that social endeavors is the best option to maximize profits? This would make the corporation socially responsible while still maintaining maximum profits. The argument presented by Friedman in this case is that while the manager is performing as expected by maximizing profits, this type of social responsibility is frequently a cloak for actions that are justified on other grounds rather than a reason for those actions. This cloak refers to corporations acting socially responsible but for the sole purpose of making profits rather than performing such endeavors for the sole purpose of benefiting society.
