question whether every statute passed by legislation is constitutional or not (Lippman, 422).
Lastly, the court case Maryland v. Garrison, the court ruled that evidence discovered by law
enforcement officers with a warrant would be allowed in court even if officers searched out of
the area that was allowed by the warrant. In the court case, 6 law enforcement officers were given
a search warrant that allowed them to search a single apartment unit located on the third floor.
Officers began searching the third floor and saw two apartments that were open. Once officer began

Stereotypes In Alden Nowlan s The Fall Of A City
The main theme in the story The Fall of a City is heavily focused on stereotypes, there are many
issues to be addressed, but probably the most devastating and/or most impactful of these on our
protagonists future, is stereotyping. Alden Nowlan s short story is the story of a young boy who
minds his own business and plays with paper people and cardboard kingdoms up in his Uncle and
Aunt s attic suddenly has his self confidence and self esteem ripped from his hands due to his
Uncle s ruthless gender role stereotyping.
Our first example of stereotyping is when our protagonist Teddy s Uncle finds out that his nephew
enjoys pretending that he has paper people commanding a military up in his attic. When his uncle
discovers this he proceeds to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
... You d never believe it, but that great big lummox has been playing with paper dolls This is the
first clear example of his Uncle s firm belief of stereotypical gender roles. In the Uncle s mind he
believes that boy should not be playing with dolls, they should be doing manly things. Rather
than just disapprove of Teddy s behaviour, he chooses instead to chastise and humiliate Teddy for
the things he loves to do. The actions of Teddy s uncle have the real possibility of affecting the
self esteem of a boy for the rest of his life. Even before he goes up into the attic he has some sort of
stereotype of what the boy could be doing: Have you been up to some of your monkey shines up
there? ... Have you been playing with matches up there? With Teddy s presence being in the attic
all day, his uncle automatically assumes that he is getting into some sort of trouble and once
again tries and succeeds to embarrass him. As the uncle does not like who Teddy is becoming, he
doesn t even consider the possibility of him enjoying a game he has created and is playing quietly
by himself. Instead, he stereotypes Teddy as a bad child, and assumes he is causing mischief.
Nowlan does not only stereotype children, but also the aunt and

David Tudor s Framing
The third argument discusses the idea of framing as a way of organizing sound. For this
argument, Davies does not consider David Tudor s lowering and raising of the piano and therefore
framing as organizing sound, he says that this framing does not count as selection or appropriation
of the sounds of a performance of the work (Kania). This does not make sense to Kania because
sounds without framing cannot exactly be called music, but during 4 33 the framing does occur and
therefore it does lead to an organization of sound (Kania). The fourth and final argument examines
that there must be noise along with the organized sounds in the performance environment for it to
be able to be considered organized. Usually, in musical performances, the

Cost Allocation Essay
Cost Allocation Definition¶
All of us have used cost allocation, the process of assigning common costs to ending inventory
and cost of goods sold (COGS), as part of our Financial Services offerings since it is required by
GAAP. Our goal has been to either reduce taxes or increase reported earnings, depending on our
client s needs and circumstances.
But what about cost allocation s other uses? Are we shortchanging our clients by not offering
services in this area (usually referred to as cost or management accounting services)?
Managers use cost allocation for a number of reasons. First and foremost, cost allocation provides a
methodology for assigning overhead costs of various activities, usually support departments, to
products or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Implementing Activity Based Costing¶
The steps involved in activity based costing are:
1) Clarify the purpose of the allocation, defining why the need to allocate these costs exists and
defining the benefit of doing so.
2) Identify support and operating department cost pools;
3) Select an allocation base or cost driver for each support department cost pool based on a cause
and effect relationship between the support departments and the operating/production departments.
4) Choose and apply a method for allocating support department costs to operating/production
departments. The three most widely used methods are the direct method, the step down method,
and the reciprocal method, all of which will be discussed shortly.
5) Once the allocation of support costs to the operating departments is complete, cost drivers are
selected for the newly formed cost pools (production/operating department overhead costs) and
costs are then allocated to the units of goods or services.
Direct Method of Allocation¶
Before we continue, it would be good to discuss the three methods discussed in step 4. The direct
method allocates costs directly from the support departments to the operating departments that use
its services. Example: the personnel department might allocate its overhead (i.e., ALL of its

Analysis Of Beyonce s Pretty Hurts
Pretty Hurts by Beyonce is embedded with Pathos. Are you happy with yourself?, (Beyonce,

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting about 1% of the population worldwide. Although
the dopamine (DA) hypothesis is still keeping a dominant position in schizophrenia research, new
advances have been emerging in recent years, which suggest the implication of white matter
abnormalities in schizophrenia. In this paper, we will briefly review some of recent human studies
showing white matter abnormalities in schizophrenic brains and altered ... Show more content on

These observations, plus the psychotogenic effects of DA enhancing drugs [7, 8], provided solid
evidence for the DA hypothesis of schizophrenia that hyperactivity of DA transmission is
responsible for the positive symptoms observed in this disorder [9].
In contrast to positive symptoms, negative symptoms tend to remain stable over time in patients
with established illness [10] and have been found to persist despite of treatment [11, 12]. This
phenomenon raised a critical challenge to the DA hypothesis. In addition, this hypothesis cannot
account for why the symptoms of schizophrenia commonly first present in late adolescence and
early adulthood.
During adolescence and early adulthood, white matter volume expands while grey matter volume
loss occurs [13]. This long lasting development of the white matter is associated with the
development of cognitive functions [14]. Given these and that schizophrenia present in adolescence
or early adulthood, it is reasonable to infer that disruption to white matter development and/or
damage to some white matter structures during this period are responsible for the development of
psychotic symptoms. In line with this view, there are increasing human studies, especially those
following the inspiring review by Davis et al. [15], showing white matter abnormalities and altered

The Pros And Cons Of Immigration In America
There always has to be a restriction on immigration as the U.S can t handle millions of immigrants
that are either crime ridden, diseased, or just poverty stricken people but are sure to let in
immigrants who are seeking opportunity. During the 18 19 centuries, immigrants from around the
world wanted to come to America as it was the land of opportunity. Presidents like Woodrow Wilson
set the bar for immigrationas he was a supporter of restriction but not selection. The U.S does not
need these type of people in the country as they give no benefit to the U.S. Of course not every
immigrant is crime ridden or diseased but that s why the U.S made special tests which can sift
out the unacceptable immigrants who will have a negative effect on the U.S and bring in the
acceptable immigrants who could enhance the U.S. As Woodrow Wilson once said, we have
generously kept our doors open to all who were not unfitted by reason of disease or incapacity
for self support or such personal records and antecedents as were likely to make them a menace to
our peace and order or to the wholesome and essential relationships of life. (Wilson Doc B). As
many others wanted to pass a bill for immigrants to take a test of their education but President
Wilson rejected the bill as it was unfair to the immigrants as some mainly come to the U.S for
education. There still must be tests that not select certain immigrants but restrict immigrants who
are unfit to come into this country. There s a difference

It is important when employing someone new to create a good working relationship from the
beginning there are both internal and external factors that can impact and effect employment
relationships. An internal factor could be a good benefits and incentives package if it is a desirable
package it may create a hardworking staff force from the beginning of the employment, for example
an enhanced maternity package could see you hold onto valued members of staff. The management
style and employee progression are also internal factors if the company has a positive management

The Battle Of Saratog The Major Turning Point Of The...
The Battle of Saratoga is considered to be the major turning point of the American Revolution.
This battle proved to the world that the fledgling American army was an effective fighting force
capable of defeating the highly trained British forces in a major conflict. As a result of this
successful battle, the European powers, primarily France, took interest in the insurrection of the
Americans and began to support them. In the British Campaign of 1777, Lord George Germain
and Major General Burgoyne planned a comprehensive advance of three columns to meet in
Albany, New York. Burgoyne would lead the main column, which moved southward along the
Hudson River. A second column under General Barry St. Leger would serve as a diversionary
attack, moving eastward from Canada along the Mohawk River. General William Howe would
direct the third element of the attack. According to the plan, Howe would direct General Henry
Clinton to move northward along the Hudson River and link up with Burgoyne in Albany. The goal
of this plan was to isolate and destroy the Continental forces of New England, effectively splitting
the Colonies along the Hudson River and ending the American Revolution. Initially, the British plan
appeared to be working. Burgoyne s army continually pushed back the Americans southward along
the Hudson River with only minor casualties. Burgoyne s invasion force comprised of 9,000 men,
including 4,200 British regulars, 4,000 German mercenaries, 400 Indian warriors, and

Bob Ewell s House In To Kill A Mocking Bird
There are many important and peculiar buildings mentioned in this section of the novel. The
jailhouse where Tom is kept, the First purchase church and Maycomb s courthouse, are all
examples of public buildings. Some private residences in Maycomb include the Ewell house and the
Radley house. I think the courthouse and the Ewell houseare the most significant buildings in this
section, so I will be focusing on them. What goes on in these buildings is often a reflection of how
they look. First of all, the courthouse s buildingreflects what goes on inside. One description we
learn about the courthouse is the pillars were all that remained standing when the original
courthouse burned in 1856 (Lee 217). The fact that there are still physical... Show more content on

They are poor, cheap and awful people. Inside the house, Bob Ewell mistreats his children by
abusing and underfeeding them. The exterior is as mistreated as the interior. Their property is
described as a playhouse of an insane child with a fence made of bits of tree limbs, broomsticks
and tool shafts with rusty hammer heads held on with pieces of barbed wire (Lee 228). This
shows that the Ewell s care very little about the appearance of their house and only make repairs
with things they get for free from the garbage dump, like how they pay little attention to how
well the children are cared for. Their house is also behind a garbage dump with a yard full of
trash. The fact that they live behind the town s garbage dump clearly demonstrates that the
Ewell s are the trash of the town, are worthless, and only care about themselves. They are not all
bad though. Their property has six chipped enamel slop jars holding brilliant red geraniums,
cared for as tenderly as if they belonged to Miss Maudie Atkinson in the corner all in a line by the
fence (Lee 228). This represents the small amount of goodness in the Ewell house coming from
Mayella. I think she tries to be kind to others and help her family, but the problem is that no one
cares to help her except Tom Robinson, who society says is bad. She is so terrified of her father
and will just do what he tells her to, so her attempt at goodness barely shows through

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Overdraft
1.Overdraft
Overdraft may occur when the amount of money which is withdrawn from a bank account exceeds
the amount available (Overdraft, 2015). Normally it happens when an individual writes the total on
the check more than the total balance in the account. The bank will cover the checks and allows the
customers to deposit or place more funds into the account in order to cover the negative balance. In
addition, the bank will charge an interest at the agreed rate (Overdraft, 2015) on this short term loan
instead of charging fees. Basically, the bank would not reject the customers check when there is no
enough funds which are available to cover up because the customes pay for the overdraft protection
on their account.

The protagonists in the book Lost Boy, Lost Girl, are on a journey in search of survival and
safety. Martha and John travel through Sudan to escape the presence of the Northern army. They
come across a refugee camp supported by the UN. They are supplied with food, water, and
hospitality. Although they had all of these resources, their situation was not nearly close enough
to what they desired. For most of the day, they went hungry from lack of food. In addition,
Martha is working as if a slave for her parents, preventing her from obtaining an education, and
she is being forced into marriage. The quote, Really I wasn t thinking too far ahead, about

To make the time pass until the next shipment of food arrived, we told stories and played games.
We tried to trick bellies into thinking we were full by drinking a lot of water. But that only
worked for a while, and then our hunger pains would come back (102). Food came ever so often
while John and Martha were in the Kenya refugee camp. Their stomachs would hurt so immensely
that they went to clinics and stole medicine for more strength to hold them through the day. In

How To Be Learned In My Antonia
The American West: Things Learned from My Antonia The story, My Antonia by Willa Cather
holds many historically accurate information; especially about the way of life on the Nebraska
frontier. Through the Adventures of Jim and Antonia there is much to be learned about the
American West. Be it the hardships of winter, the monetary struggles of immigrants into the land,
the trials of farming, or humble living of everyday citizens; the American West had plenty of
learning opportunities. These learning opportunities were not only for people of that time, but
for people even today in this era. Winters of the American west were extremely difficult, constant
storms, food shortages and freezing temperatures; all of which made the winters so trying. In
Dee Brown s Book, The American West on page 152 she says, Homesteaders who refused to quit
and they were in the majority were faced with a hard winter. Many had no money, no credit, no
food; some had no fuel or clothing. The frontier was no place to be during the cold and bitter
winter months. Some families, like the Shimerda family, were not fully prepared and... Show more

bolt of gingham and sheeting. She cut squares of cotton cloth and we sewed them together into a

an abundance of wealth percolated into the Metropolis, it seeped to the humble people, making
them less humble and more demanding. It seemed that life was actually better during the humbling
times where money was scarce. The life on the frontier was not always easy, but it was

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Essay
The beginning of A Rose for Emily is marked by the death of Emily Grierson; a stubborn woman
possessing a dark secret, unbeknownst to the townspeople, who are completely engrossed in her
isolation and archaic traditions. After her funeral, a few citizens break down the door of a
locked room, only to uncover a dusty bridal room and the deceased body of Homer Barron
Emily s lover. The townspeople people are left blindsided and helpless at her vile action. How
could they suspect this to happen? They were absorbed in their desire to uphold Emily as a figure
of the Old South, rather than confront her increasingly unusual behaviour. This inhibiting of action
due to social restraints and forced ignorance is also seen in The Ones... Show more content on

This potential destruction of their beloved happiness is what deters the citizens from rescuing the
child, consequently permitting the injustice to continue. In comparison, the townspeople of
Jefferson are persuaded by social traditions to set expectations upon Miss Emily. The
townspeople rely on Emily to uphold the traditions of the Old South, inevitably leading her to
reject any progress. For instance, when she consistently refuses to pay taxes. However, when
Emily goes against these traditions by seeing Homer Barron, a labourer of lower status, the
townspeople criticize her. Particularly, the old people of the past generation pity her and call her
eventual wedlock to Homer a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people (IV).
Their focus on maintaining Emily s status as an aristocratic, antebellum woman distract them from
taking any course of action to help her. Like the child, Emily is subjugated at the expense of the
desires of the townspeople. Emily also embodies the social restraint experienced by the citizens of
Omelas since she experiences restraint from the townspeople of Jefferson. Ultimately, it is these
social restraints which prevent action against an injustice.
The lack of control over a situation leads to injustices which cannot be reversed. After learning of
the suffering child, the citizens of Omelas are flooded with negative

Momotaro s Divine Sea Warriors Propaganda
During the time of war, nations come to rely on propaganda to help invigorate a sense of
nationalism into their people. Not only does it encourage them to unify as one, but propaganda
also creates an enemy, someone that needs to be defeated. The use of propaganda is not limited to
those old enough to understand what is happening in the world, rather it is used even upon the
young and innocent who are new to the world around them. Children become a target that can be
swayed by ideals, but it must be dealt with in a different manner. Using animation is one way to

The creation of this homogenous world causes a bubble where the integration of national
economies, markets and cultures concedes to an essentially American dominated culture (Wayne,
2002, p.2). This import and export of culture, the bubble, and alimented by Globalization itself,
brings about that Hollywood captures around 70% of British film market, for example, and the
British film industry captures only 1% of the American market (Elliot, 2000). Jameson comes to the
problematic assertion that consumption of Hollywood films breaks up the seamless web of habits
and habitual practices of a national culture.
A critique of this argument was made by John Tomlinson where he notes that discussions of cultural
domination often locate the media as central to cultural imperialism (Tomlinson, 1991, p.29). It
seems that when we reach a higher level of Globalization the enemy of the difference is the
transnational system itself (Jameson, 1998, p.74). This all come to the fact that Hollywood films
playing in European cinemas or in television makes a clear distinction between media products
(films, television, radio, books...) and culture (repertoire of a national meaning). In this particular
aspect Tomlinson notes that:
media texts of Western origin are massively present in other cultures. But the key question is, does
this presence represent cultural imperialism? Clearly the sheer presence alone does not. A text does
not become culturally significant until it is read (Tomlinson, 1991,

others. We often isolate ourselves from the lives of those around us. With each little bit of
isolation we become a little more dehumanized each day. Instead of walking around to places we
find ourselves using cars to travel, each day removing ourselves more and more from greeting
and contacting new people. We have furthered this isolation through working in cubicles, and
automation through computers and factories. Tv creates another scenario where we watch fake
realities instead of being around other people. Even in a movie theatre we are isolated because
we stare at the big screen instead of holding a true conversation with someone else. I have nothing
against these inventions, the trouble is that they can lead one to focus more on themselves and
less on their fellow man. Selfishness creeps in and pushes aside the desire to give to others.

Eliminating the prescription for Birth Control provides an increased access for everyone,
encourages safe sex, reduces the effect of unwanted pregnancy and helps the economy. Birth
control is a method of medication that prevents pregnancy for women. The birth control pill has
been around for about 50 years and in 1916 a woman by the name of Margaret Sanger opened the
very first birth controlclinic in the United States and later served a 30 day sentence for it being
labeled as an unlawful nuisance (Brief History of Thompson 2). In the late 1930s, a judge put a
federal ban on birth control. In 1950, Margaret Sanger created the pill. Birth Control is a good
way for encouraging safe sex because it reminds young people that all of society can... Show more

On average taxpayers, pay $11 million for prescription meds. If birth control was non
prescription it would allow people who do not have much of money to easily purchase. Birth
Control and other forms of contraceptives can cost from $6 to $112 every month. With the health
insurance can cost from anywhere of $5 to $40 (pack for one month) and generic brands can be
from anywhere to $5 to $15 and although it is covered by the insurance companies many teenagers
and adults cannot afford it putting a substantial amount on their lives and the choice to have sex or
not. The other issue is that teens that do not want their parents to know they are sexually active
need parents permission to get a prescription. Without that health insurance, great deals of women
find that birth control can become high priced. Between 2008 2009, a bankruptcy in the United
States showed that a high profile of unemployment and fiscal frustration were linked to family
planning agreements and the contraceptive use. In September 2009, a survey went around and
collected that because of the monetary task almost half of the women that were surveyed wanted
to hold off on the pregnancies or restrain the number of kids they want. About five years after the
recession ended the number of births in the United States rose for the first time in almost a decade

The Childhood Of Mother And Dad Essay
Mary is a 14 month little girl, wearing a fluffy dress, large hair bow and Maryjane shoes,
accompanied by her mother Lana to a children s museum. After Lana signed an OLLU consent and
confidentiality form, this observer assured the mom that their names would remain anonymous and
only used for this academic project. A familygenogram visually demonstrates that Mary has a
three year old, older brother Peter (see Appendix A). These two are the only children in their
generation. Mom, whose primary language is Romanian, feels completely American now. She
has a younger, unmarried, 28 year old brother. Dad, age 37, has two older sisters with one
married and the other single. Mom s parents were born in Romania and live in San Antonio via
Canada where mom was born. Dad s parents are of Greek, German and other western European
descent. Both mom and dad, who own their own home, are college graduates. Mom was a
kindergarten teacher before the children were born and now identifies as a full time homemaker.
Dad is a mechanical engineer, working full time in a Houston petroleum company. He acts kindly,
and patiently assists with childcare evenings and weekends. Mom was observed to be highly
attentive, protects her daughter from falls, bumps and wobbles, is keenly observant, verbally
responsive and multi sensorally interactive to her daughter. She fills their days with educational
activities, reads about 20 books/day, sings songs, develops theme weeks, and restricts

Catullus Relationship Essay
In Catullus 2, it does not seem like Catullus and Lesbia have any kind of relationship at this
point, he seems to be admiring her from afar. This poem gives the impression that Catullus is
stalking Lesbia. He wishes to be the sparrow on Lesbia s lap as she is loving and affectionate
towards the sparrow. He wishes he could be with her and play with her like she does with the
sparrow. Catullus clearly desires Lesbia s affections and holds her in high regard at this point in
time.
In Catullus 5, Catullus and Lesbia have now entered into a physical relationship. In this poem,
Catullus brags about the many kisses they have shared and is rejoicing in their love. Catullus
beseeches Lesbia for her constant affections and believes that no amount of kisses from her would
ever be enough. He wants an infinite number of kisses. Catullus is besotted with Lesbia and
believes that nothing could go wrong at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He comes to the realisation that Lesbia is fickle and doesn t always mean what she says. A
positive sign in the relationship comes when Catullus states that Lesbia would choose to marry
him over anyone else, even Jupiter who is a God. It seems as though the tables have turned and for
once Lesbia feels more for Catullus than he does for her. Catullus and Lesbia s relationship is
tumultuous and their feelings for each other change rapidly constantly.
In Catullus 72, Catullus and Lesbia seem to have parted ways. This is a sad poem as Catullus
reveals that Lesbia has been with someone else but that his feelings for her remain. Once again
Catullus is reminiscing about the good times they shared together and the passionate love they had
for one another. Catullus asserts that Lesbia has injured him in such a manner that his is no longer
as friendly as he once was. He calls Lesbia insignificant which leads us to believe that he has given
up on her and their relationship in

Racial Prejudices In Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain is often criticized as a racist text; however,
it may have helped to dismantle racial prejudices. The classic satire piece was written in the late
1800s and follows a young boy named Huckleberry Finn on his journey down the Mississippi river.
Huck soon joins with Jim, a runaway slave, as they both flee from their unfortunate situations.
When the book was published, it was highly controversial, due to the questionable morals of Huck
Finn, and the candid portrayal of slavery. Today, Twain is often denounced for what many see as
an overuse of the n word, and a comically negative portrayal of African Americans. Many argue
that Jim is depicted as a caricature, similar to the exaggerated and offensive... Show more content on

was in part due to his love for his family, and wish to be together, but this passage reveals that he
also left due to his fear of being sold and remaining in slavery. African Americans in the media were
generally portrayed as docile and eager to work, an idea which this passage directly contradicts.

Health Philosophy Interview Paper My paternal grandmother, Lucille, has many chronic
conditions, yet we decided to focus on her diabetes for the majority of questions concerning her
health and wellness. When asked, Lucille could not remember when she was first diagnosed
with diabetes, but does remember when she switched from taking pills to taking insulin. She
began taking insulin the spring of 2009 after her doctor decided it was time to switch. She has
had two incidences where her blood sugar was so low that she could not even call out for help.
Both times were in the night and thankfully at that time her husband (my grandfather) found her
and was able to get the necessary help. After these incidences, she switched to taking her insulin
in the morning instead of before bed. When asked how her diabetes affects her health, Lucille
responded saying it significantly affects her eating habits. She has to watch what she eats and
keep track of her sodium because of her diabetes and other health conditions. Every night before
bed, she eats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich so her blood sugar will last through the night.
When prompted about her participation in physical activity, she referred to her outings into the
community, such as her weekly trips to the grocery store. She admitted that she sometimes needs
to eat a small candy bar while shopping because she can tell she is getting low (on her blood
sugar). She admits that even going to the doctor s office for checkups

The Changing Role Of Women In The United States
The Changing Role of Women: Identify the new ways that women were involved in society in the
United States. Be sure to include organizations that developed, meetings they held and actions they
took, and results of those actions.
As the century immediately following the American Revolution, the 19th century experienced a
rise in feminism as it harbored the first feminist movement in America. Although some women
chose to embrace their roots by retaining their domestic sphere of influence, many women began to
show discontent with the limited number of rights women held. Soon enough, the fight for women
s rights resulted in women gaining more prominence in society. In the early 19th century, women
faced very little options after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some women, however, found their domestic sphere to be too confining. During this time, society
acted against women. Women weren t allowed to hold a political office, nor were they allowed to
vote. In addition, they were virtually submissive to their husbands because they couldn t do
anything without their husbands permission. Also, women didn t have as much freedom when it
came to choosing a profession (most ended up being teachers or writers). The legal status of women
was essentially that of a white child or black slave (Hippocampus). Many women began to notice
what little rights they had. Margaret Fuller, a transcendentalist and the editor of The Dial, wrote, in
Woman in the Nineteenth Century, about how women were beginning to question what they truly
needed in life, and why they didn t have it. The first American feminist movement soon came
underway. What some people don t know is that the feminist movement occurred at the same time
as the abolitionist movement; in fact, some say that the feminist movement was a result of the
abolitionist movement. Some female abolitionists turned to the feminist cause when they realized
that they should have the same rights as any man (i.e. wanted the rights that they were fighting for
blacks to have). Sarah and Angelina Grimke are prime examples of female abolitionists who turned
to help the feminist cause. Sarah and Angelina were daughters of a southern slaveholder.

Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most successful writers of all time. Twelve of Poe s works are
known for their literary construction. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous
poems in history and was first published in 1845. This is a poem that many readers may describe
as dark, twisted, and even scary can be oddly moving and eye catching. What were the meanings
in his masterpiece, and what did Poe want his readers to understand? Poe s literary work The Raven
shows literary elements of symbolism, theme, and imagery.
First and foremost, a symbol is an object, person, or place that has meaning in it self. This also
stands for something bigger, usually an idea or concept. The raven s darkness symbolizes death.
Death becomes a constant reminder and intruder. The raven also symbolizes the narrator s
memories of Lenore and grief. At the end of the poem the narrator himself even realizes the
ravens meaning; when he states the raven will be with him forever because thoughts of Lenore
will be forever with him. This can be why the ravens symbol is so dark. Additionally, December is
another symbol is Poe s poem. December is in winter, and nothing lives in the winter. December can
symbolize death. December is an end of something, and also the anticipation of something new, a
change, to happen. (Hallqvist). Another symbol many readers see is midnight. Midnight is the
darkest part of night. The large, shadowy raven arrives at midnight on a dreary evening, and taunts

About the Author
Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 at Steventon, England. She was the seventh child of
the rector of the parish at Steventon, and lived with her family until they moved to Bath when her
father retired in 1801.
Her father, Reverend George Austen, was from Kent and attended the Tunbridge School before
studying at Oxford and receiving a living as a rector at Steventon. Her mother, Cassandra Leigh
Austen, was the daughter of a patrician family. Among her siblings she had but one sister,
Cassandra, with whom she kept in close contact her entire life. Her brothers entered a variety of

Emma advises the innocent Harriet in virtually all things, including the people with whom she
should interact. She suggests that Harriet not spend time with the Martins, a local family of
farmers whose son, Robert, is interested in Harriet. Instead, Emma plans to play matchmaker for
Harriet and Mr. Elton, the vicar of the church in Highbury. Emma seems to have some success in
her attempts to bring together Harriet Smith and Mr. Elton. The three spend a good deal of leisure
time together and he seems receptive to all of Emma s suggestions.
The friendship between Emma and Harriet does little good for either of them, however. Harriet
indulges Emma s worst qualities, giving her opportunity to meddle and serving only to flatter her.
Emma in turn fills Harriet Smith with grand pretensions that do not suit her low situation in society.
When Robert Martin proposes to Harriet, she rejects him based on Emma s advice, thinking that he
is too common. Mr. Knightley criticizes Emma s matchmaking, since he thinks that the dependable
Robert Martin is Harriet s superior, for while he is respectable, she is from uncertain origins.
Emma s sister, Isabella, and her husband, Mr. John Knightley, visit Highbury, and Emma uses their
visit as an opportunity to reconcile with Mr. Knightley after their argument over Harriet.

What Is Optimized Design
In most parameter tables, the data values or keys are stored discretely and unevenly [13].
However, parameter values do not generally exist explicitly in data tables. Thus, searching is
processed for the stored data keys. This chapter explains the details of the optimized design, the
algorithm framework and the advantages. 6.1 Initial Step In this algorithm, the first step is
differentiated from the remaining steps. Let N be the initial n most significant bits of the input bits
A. Let k be the length of the generator polynomial K(x) used for generating the CRC value. The
binary numbers of N and A are given by: N=[a1a2.....an] and A=[a1a2....ak] (6.1) The binary
number of N is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each slice uses a separate table. The slices are represented by M_1^(t 1),M_2^(t 2).....M_t^(t 1)of
length m1,m2...mt. The tables may vary from the tables used in the initial step. This is because
the number of bits read in the initial step may vary from the bits read in the subsequent steps. The
step T uses g tables of sizes equal to 2t1,2t2...2tg. Each table contains the remainders obtained
from the long division of all possible values of the slice with the offset value. The offset is given by
Oi=∑_(j=i+1)^gв

accelerates the search speed to obtain values from the look up tables. The values obtained from
the input stream are considered as the indexes for the table look up. The index value is stored in a
register and is matched with every value present in the table. The output value is obtained when a
match occurs during the search. The values returned from the lookup tables is given by Pi=Mt 1i.

Characteristics Of An Anglo-Saxon Hero In Beowulf
Debi Mazar once said, A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who tries to
give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and
someone who really deeply cares. In Beowulf, the Unknown Author of this Anglo Saxon poem,
explains the battle between good and evil. An Anglo Saxon Hero is someone who is loyal, who
has honor and respect, they don t do things for rewards because they ll have that sense of justice
which is just as good. They are never concerned with themselves but the wellbeing of everyone
around them and that s what makes them so great, their selfless acts change lives for the better.
Beowulfexemplifies the characteristics of an Anglo Saxon Hero because he shows bravery and
courage in a way nobody else does, he is honored by all and is beyond selfless.
First of all, Beowulf shows courage and bravery on his way to find Grendel and battle him. He
runs after him to find out where Grendel is going and why he won t let him battle, this shows
bravery because most people don t run towards danger and Beowulf did exactly that. Beowulf
runs towards danger throughout the entire poem, for example in the text it says, Have watched
me rise from the darkness of war. Dripping with my enemy s blood. I drove five great giants into
chains, chased all that raced from the earth, I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters
out of the ocean and killing them one by one. (247 254). This is a great quote because it shows
how it takes a great amount of bravery to battle someone that has greater than or equal strength
compared to himself,(Beowulf) with it being night time it was hard to see let alone battle
monsters. Another example of Beowulf showing courage is when he says, He needs no
weapons and fears none. Nor will I. My lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go
where my feet were afraid to... (263 264) because this shows that he doesn t like an unfair fight
and believes whatever his opponent has to fight with he should have the same because that s what a
fair fight consist of.
Additionally, a person that has honor is someone who has an obligation to fulfil and they always
keep an agreement. At the beginning of the poem Beowulf was

Incarceration Crime Rate
Since the 1990s and the crime drop, there has been many questions to the reason why. Steven Levitt
and Stephen Dubner thoroughly looked through the different theories but came to a conclusion that
the main reason crime had fallen is abortion (117 145). One of the reasons they discuss is whether
or not the increase of incarceration affects the fluctuations in crimerates. Levitt and Dubner suggest
that the crime system became relaxed due avoid racism; however, the crime rates then began to
rise (122). Between 1980 and 2000, there was a fifteenfold increase in the number of people sent to

1 30). Ouimet says [Spelman] estimates the relationship between incarceration and crime and
comes up with an elasticity measure of 0.4, which means that an increase in incarceration of one
percent will be followed by a drop in crime of 0.4% (par. 12). In other words, imprisonment only
accounted for one fourth of the crime drop in the 1990s (Ouimet par. 12). Not all scholars
however, believe that incarceration was responsible for the drop because of its inconsistency
between states (Ouimet par. 13). In fact, they believe that states adjusted the incarceration rates
due to the crime rates, the dependent and independent variables were flipped (Ouimet par. 13).
Ouimet then goes into policing strategies, (another commonly known factor in affecting crime
rates) and how those statistics match up with those of Canada. Though Ouimet uses evidence to
prove that incarceration affects crime, he then disproves it by saying that it is to variant and is
not consistent among states (pars. 12 13). This article is really good to look at another side of the
crime drop. It brings in a good perspective and points; however, it ties the U.S. to Canada in which
causes the author to broaden the argument instead of tying it down to specific

The Imaginary Institution of India
The Imaginary institution of Indian: Politics and Ideas Ch5 8 As you dive into the text of
Sudipta Kaviraj s The Imaginary institution of Indian: Politics and Ideas (2010) he begins to
already question the sense of Nationalism. Indian s didn t really have any sense of nationalism up
until the British came to power. Kaviraj states it is often essential to ask whose history this is, in
the sense of history for whom rather than history of whom. (Page 170) Because it depends on
which said the story is told. In earlier periods of Indiathey felt a weaker version of patriotism which
was an ancestor for Indian nationalism (Page 174) which would be different from today s
patriotism and that there is no connection between being patriotic and being Indian. He says that
the consciousness becomes nationalist before it becomes India s only because they happen to
realize it later in time.
Kaviraj regards India to be closely parallel to what Gramsci said about Italian nationalism. There
are two conflicts, One of memorialism of Italy s Roman past to what it is today and, two today s
modernity and the construction of the Italian identity. He compares the two because Italian history
had some similar influences to that of colonialism. Gramsci says that there is no concrete line in
which Italian culture is connected by, the only continuity they have is just propaganda. Each
century in India had its own literature. Any time they would summarize a principle of the past they

Internal And External Actors In Somalia
According to the ICG, since 1991 Somalia has become a victim of many internal and external
interventions. The collapse of the central government paved a way for the immediate emergence of
influential internal and external actors in Somalia (ICG, 2006).
Internal actors according to Bulhan are established within Somalia and they are originally
Somalians such as the Business Lords, local media, Somalia Diasporas, pirates, clans, and different
charity organizations and Islamic groups with Islam as a motto. The external actors are the
neighboring countries, Western states and Arab nations with the both political and economic
wishes. For instance, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eretria, Djibouti, and Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the
UAE, U.S., Italy, UK, and Turkey had a vital role (Bulhan, 2013).

Myers Briggs Type Indicator Of Personality
Myers Briggs Type Indicator
Personality is a challenging trait to measure and many personality tests do not stand the test of
time once they are applied and researched. Why then, do we find it important to measure
personality? Isabel Briggs Myers once said It is up to each person to recognize his or her true
preferences. I find this statement to be true in theory and in practice. In today s social media, one
of the most common online quizzes or assessments I come across, is personality test. There
appears to be countless ways to find out one s personality type, but many have not been proven true
or accurate. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator, also known as the MBTI and it is a well known and
established, personality inventory. It is a way to do, as Isabel Briggs Myers said, to find and
know your own preferences. The MBTI is based on Carl Jung theories of personality types and
commonly used today. It was developed by the mother daughter team of Katharine Briggs and
Isabel Briggs Myers in order to assess personality types. The MBTI was published in 1975 by the
Consulting Psychologists Press, Inc. (The Myers Briggs Foundation Isabel Briggs Myers 2014).
Test Description
The MBIT was meant to coincide with Jung s four dichotomies which Katharine Briggs and Isabel
Myers followed. After a great deal of research, they came up with a self report instrument with
questions on four separate dichotomies (Myers, Creation of the MBTIВ® Types, 2011). Much like

Essay on Childhood Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental illness which affects millions of people throughout the world. Scientists
have begun to understand more and more about the possible causes, predisposing factors, types,
and possible treatments for schizophrenia. (Torrey, 1995) It is very rare for schizophrenic
symptoms to appear before the age of 12 but it does occur. Recently, there has been a growing
interest in childhood schizophrenia. It is less than one sixtieth as common as the adult onset type
but the characteristics are very similar. Childhood schizophrenia also tends to be harder to treat and
to have a worse prognosis than the adult onset form. (Rapoport, 1997)

Water is essential for us to live and yet there are still so many issue linked to contamination of
water and the health of people. A large proportion of the World s population around 1.1 billion
people does not have access to improved sources of water (Thompson et al., 2003). Many people
take for granted their ability to access clean water. When in reality this problem has been occurring
for a very long time and affects a vast amount of people. The first documented attempts to treat
drinking water, which may date back to 4000 B.C., were recorded in Greek and Sanskrit writings
(Barry M and Hughes J, 2008). Even with the technology and knowledge we have today this
problem is still occurring. In order to fully understand its implications on people it has to be looked
at in a global context.
According to Thompson et al. (2003), a long term goal of Global Health is to cut in half the
number of people who do not have access to clean water. This initiative will necessitate innovative,
collaborative, interdisciplinary, and intersectoral efforts, with commitment from national leaders
and heads of international agencies and with public private partnership (Barry M and Hughes J,

accomplishing this goal. Diseases associated with the consumption of contaminated water cause

these types of technology. It will be important for us to also talk about the environment. Then,
finally, we must talk about both the moral and ethical aspects of using robots to perform surgery. By
researching and reporting these things, it is our desire for everyone to not only have a better

  • 3. Stereotypes In Alden Nowlan s The Fall Of A City The main theme in the story The Fall of a City is heavily focused on stereotypes, there are many issues to be addressed, but probably the most devastating and/or most impactful of these on our protagonists future, is stereotyping. Alden Nowlan s short story is the story of a young boy who minds his own business and plays with paper people and cardboard kingdoms up in his Uncle and Aunt s attic suddenly has his self confidence and self esteem ripped from his hands due to his Uncle s ruthless gender role stereotyping. Our first example of stereotyping is when our protagonist Teddy s Uncle finds out that his nephew enjoys pretending that he has paper people commanding a military up in his attic. When his uncle discovers this he proceeds to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ... You d never believe it, but that great big lummox has been playing with paper dolls This is the first clear example of his Uncle s firm belief of stereotypical gender roles. In the Uncle s mind he believes that boy should not be playing with dolls, they should be doing manly things. Rather than just disapprove of Teddy s behaviour, he chooses instead to chastise and humiliate Teddy for the things he loves to do. The actions of Teddy s uncle have the real possibility of affecting the self esteem of a boy for the rest of his life. Even before he goes up into the attic he has some sort of stereotype of what the boy could be doing: Have you been up to some of your monkey shines up there? ... Have you been playing with matches up there? With Teddy s presence being in the attic all day, his uncle automatically assumes that he is getting into some sort of trouble and once again tries and succeeds to embarrass him. As the uncle does not like who Teddy is becoming, he doesn t even consider the possibility of him enjoying a game he has created and is playing quietly by himself. Instead, he stereotypes Teddy as a bad child, and assumes he is causing mischief. Nowlan does not only stereotype children, but also the aunt and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. David Tudor s Framing The third argument discusses the idea of framing as a way of organizing sound. For this argument, Davies does not consider David Tudor s lowering and raising of the piano and therefore framing as organizing sound, he says that this framing does not count as selection or appropriation of the sounds of a performance of the work (Kania). This does not make sense to Kania because sounds without framing cannot exactly be called music, but during 4 33 the framing does occur and therefore it does lead to an organization of sound (Kania). The fourth and final argument examines that there must be noise along with the organized sounds in the performance environment for it to be able to be considered organized. Usually, in musical performances, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Cost Allocation Essay Cost Allocation DefinitionВ¶ All of us have used cost allocation, the process of assigning common costs to ending inventory and cost of goods sold (COGS), as part of our Financial Services offerings since it is required by GAAP. Our goal has been to either reduce taxes or increase reported earnings, depending on our client s needs and circumstances. But what about cost allocation s other uses? Are we shortchanging our clients by not offering services in this area (usually referred to as cost or management accounting services)? Managers use cost allocation for a number of reasons. First and foremost, cost allocation provides a methodology for assigning overhead costs of various activities, usually support departments, to products or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Implementing Activity Based CostingВ¶ The steps involved in activity based costing are: 1) Clarify the purpose of the allocation, defining why the need to allocate these costs exists and defining the benefit of doing so. 2) Identify support and operating department cost pools; 3) Select an allocation base or cost driver for each support department cost pool based on a cause and effect relationship between the support departments and the operating/production departments. 4) Choose and apply a method for allocating support department costs to operating/production departments. The three most widely used methods are the direct method, the step down method, and the reciprocal method, all of which will be discussed shortly. 5) Once the allocation of support costs to the operating departments is complete, cost drivers are selected for the newly formed cost pools (production/operating department overhead costs) and costs are then allocated to the units of goods or services. Direct Method of AllocationВ¶ Before we continue, it would be good to discuss the three methods discussed in step 4. The direct method allocates costs directly from the support departments to the operating departments that use its services. Example: the personnel department might allocate its overhead (i.e., ALL of its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

White Matter Psychology Essay White Matter Abnormalities and Animal Models Examining a Putative Role of Altered White Matter in Schizophrenia Haiyun Xu 1 ,* and Xin Min Li 2 Author information ? Article notes ? Copyright and License information ? This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Go to: Abstract Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting about 1% of the population worldwide. Although the dopamine (DA) hypothesis is still keeping a dominant position in schizophrenia research, new advances have been emerging in recent years, which suggest the implication of white matter abnormalities in schizophrenia. In this paper, we will briefly review some of recent human studies showing white matter abnormalities in schizophrenic brains and altered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These observations, plus the psychotogenic effects of DA enhancing drugs [7, 8], provided solid evidence for the DA hypothesis of schizophrenia that hyperactivity of DA transmission is responsible for the positive symptoms observed in this disorder [9]. In contrast to positive symptoms, negative symptoms tend to remain stable over time in patients with established illness [10] and have been found to persist despite of treatment [11, 12]. This phenomenon raised a critical challenge to the DA hypothesis. In addition, this hypothesis cannot account for why the symptoms of schizophrenia commonly first present in late adolescence and early adulthood. During adolescence and early adulthood, white matter volume expands while grey matter volume loss occurs [13]. This long lasting development of the white matter is associated with the development of cognitive functions [14]. Given these and that schizophrenia present in adolescence or early adulthood, it is reasonable to infer that disruption to white matter development and/or damage to some white matter structures during this period are responsible for the development of psychotic symptoms. In line with this view, there are increasing human studies, especially those following the inspiring review by Davis et al. [15], showing white matter abnormalities and altered oligodendrocyte (OL) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Immigration In America There always has to be a restriction on immigration as the U.S can t handle millions of immigrants that are either crime ridden, diseased, or just poverty stricken people but are sure to let in immigrants who are seeking opportunity. During the 18 19 centuries, immigrants from around the world wanted to come to America as it was the land of opportunity. Presidents like Woodrow Wilson set the bar for immigrationas he was a supporter of restriction but not selection. The U.S does not need these type of people in the country as they give no benefit to the U.S. Of course not every immigrant is crime ridden or diseased but that s why the U.S made special tests which can sift out the unacceptable immigrants who will have a negative effect on the U.S and bring in the acceptable immigrants who could enhance the U.S. As Woodrow Wilson once said, we have generously kept our doors open to all who were not unfitted by reason of disease or incapacity for self support or such personal records and antecedents as were likely to make them a menace to our peace and order or to the wholesome and essential relationships of life. (Wilson Doc B). As many others wanted to pass a bill for immigrants to take a test of their education but President Wilson rejected the bill as it was unfair to the immigrants as some mainly come to the U.S for education. There still must be tests that not select certain immigrants but restrict immigrants who are unfit to come into this country. There s a difference ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Battle Of Saratog The Major Turning Point Of The... The Battle of Saratoga is considered to be the major turning point of the American Revolution. This battle proved to the world that the fledgling American army was an effective fighting force capable of defeating the highly trained British forces in a major conflict. As a result of this successful battle, the European powers, primarily France, took interest in the insurrection of the Americans and began to support them. In the British Campaign of 1777, Lord George Germain and Major General Burgoyne planned a comprehensive advance of three columns to meet in Albany, New York. Burgoyne would lead the main column, which moved southward along the Hudson River. A second column under General Barry St. Leger would serve as a diversionary attack, moving eastward from Canada along the Mohawk River. General William Howe would direct the third element of the attack. According to the plan, Howe would direct General Henry Clinton to move northward along the Hudson River and link up with Burgoyne in Albany. The goal of this plan was to isolate and destroy the Continental forces of New England, effectively splitting the Colonies along the Hudson River and ending the American Revolution. Initially, the British plan appeared to be working. Burgoyne s army continually pushed back the Americans southward along the Hudson River with only minor casualties. Burgoyne s invasion force comprised of 9,000 men, including 4,200 British regulars, 4,000 German mercenaries, 400 Indian warriors, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some private residences in Maycomb include the Ewell house and the Radley house. I think the courthouse and the Ewell houseare the most significant buildings in this section, so I will be focusing on them. What goes on in these buildings is often a reflection of how they look. The exterior is as mistreated as the interior. Their property is described as a playhouse of an insane child with a fence made of bits of tree limbs, broomsticks and tool shafts with rusty hammer heads held on with pieces of barbed wire (Lee 228). This shows that the Ewell s care very little about the appearance of their house and only make repairs with things they get for free from the garbage dump, like how they pay little attention to how well the children are cared for. Their house is also behind a garbage dump with a yard full of trash. The fact that they live behind the town s garbage dump clearly demonstrates that the Ewell s are the trash of the town, are worthless, and only care about themselves. They are not all bad though. Their property has six chipped enamel slop jars holding brilliant red geraniums, cared for as tenderly as if they belonged to Miss Maudie Atkinson in the corner all in a line by the fence (Lee 228). This represents the small amount of goodness in the Ewell house coming from Mayella. Normally it happens when an individual writes the total on the check more than the total balance in the account. The bank will cover the checks and allows the customers to deposit or place more funds into the account in order to cover the negative balance. In addition, the bank will charge an interest at the agreed rate (Overdraft, 2015) on this short term loan instead of charging fees. Although they had all of these resources, their situation was not nearly close enough to what they desired. For most of the day, they went hungry from lack of food. • 15. How To Be Learned In My Antonia The American West: Things Learned from My Antonia The story, My Antonia by Willa Cather holds many historically accurate information; especially about the way of life on the Nebraska frontier. Through the Adventures of Jim and Antonia there is much to be learned about the American West. Be it the hardships of winter, the monetary struggles of immigrants into the land, the trials of farming, or humble living of everyday citizens; the American West had plenty of learning opportunities. These learning opportunities were not only for people of that time, but for people even today in this era. Winters of the American west were extremely difficult, constant storms, food shortages and freezing temperatures; all of which made the winters so trying. In Dee Brown s Book, The American West on page 152 she says, Homesteaders who refused to quit and they were in the majority were faced with a hard winter. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Essay The beginning of A Rose for Emily is marked by the death of Emily Grierson; a stubborn woman possessing a dark secret, unbeknownst to the townspeople, who are completely engrossed in her isolation and archaic traditions. The townspeople people are left blindsided and helpless at her vile action. How could they suspect this to happen? This potential destruction of their beloved happiness is what deters the citizens from rescuing the child, consequently permitting the injustice to continue. In comparison, the townspeople of Jefferson are persuaded by social traditions to set expectations upon Miss Emily. The townspeople rely on Emily to uphold the traditions of the Old South, inevitably leading her to reject any progress. For instance, when she consistently refuses to pay taxes. However, when Emily goes against these traditions by seeing Homer Barron, a labourer of lower status, the townspeople criticize her. Particularly, the old people of the past generation pity her and call her eventual wedlock to Homer a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people (IV). Their focus on maintaining Emily s status as an aristocratic, antebellum woman distract them from taking any course of action to help her. Like the child, Emily is subjugated at the expense of the desires of the townspeople. Emily also embodies the social restraint experienced by the citizens of Omelas since she experiences restraint from the townspeople of Jefferson. Ultimately, it is these social restraints which prevent action against an injustice. The lack of control over a situation leads to injustices which cannot be reversed. This import and export of culture, the bubble, and alimented by Globalization itself, brings about that Hollywood captures around 70% of British film market, for example, and the British film industry captures only 1% of the American market (Elliot, 2000). Jameson comes to the problematic assertion that consumption of Hollywood films breaks up the seamless web of habits and habitual practices of a national culture. A critique of this argument was made by John Tomlinson where he notes that discussions of cultural domination often locate the media as central to cultural imperialism (Tomlinson, 1991, p.29). It seems that when we reach a higher level of Globalization the enemy of the difference is the transnational system itself (Jameson, 1998, p.74). We often isolate ourselves from the lives of those around us. With each little bit of isolation we become a little more dehumanized each day. Instead of walking around to places we find ourselves using cars to travel, each day removing ourselves more and more from greeting and contacting new people. We have furthered this isolation through working in cubicles, and automation through computers and factories. Tv creates another scenario where we watch fake realities instead of being around other people. Even in a movie theatre we are isolated because we stare at the big screen instead of holding a true conversation with someone else. I have nothing against these inventions, the trouble is that they can lead one to focus more on themselves and less on their fellow man. Selfishness creeps in and pushes aside the desire to give to others. Instead of improving and uplifting humanity we are working backwards. Women weren t allowed to hold a political office, nor were they allowed to vote. Also, women didn t have as much freedom when it came to choosing a profession (most ended up being teachers or writers). The legal status of women was essentially that of a white child or black slave (Hippocampus). Many women began to notice what little rights they had. Margaret Fuller, a transcendentalist and the editor of The Dial, wrote, in Woman in the Nineteenth Century, about how women were beginning to question what they truly needed in life, and why they didn t have it. The first American feminist movement soon came underway. What some people don t know is that the feminist movement occurred at the same time as the abolitionist movement; in fact, some say that the feminist movement was a result of the abolitionist movement. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous poems in history and was first published in 1845. This is a poem that many readers may describe as dark, twisted, and even scary can be oddly moving and eye catching. What were the meanings in his masterpiece, and what did Poe want his readers to understand? Poe s literary work The Raven shows literary elements of symbolism, theme, and imagery. First and foremost, a symbol is an object, person, or place that has meaning in it self. This also stands for something bigger, usually an idea or concept. The raven s darkness symbolizes death. Death becomes a constant reminder and intruder. The raven also symbolizes the narrator s memories of Lenore and grief. At the end of the poem the narrator himself even realizes the ravens meaning; when he states the raven will be with him forever because thoughts of Lenore will be forever with him. This can be why the ravens symbol is so dark. Additionally, December is another symbol is Poe s poem. December is in winter, and nothing lives in the winter. December can symbolize death. Her father, Reverend George Austen, was from Kent and attended the Tunbridge School before studying at Oxford and receiving a living as a rector at Steventon. Her mother, Cassandra Leigh Austen, was the daughter of a patrician family. Among her siblings she had but one sister, Cassandra, with whom she kept in close contact her entire life. Her brothers entered a variety of professions: several joined the clergy, one was a banker, while several more spent time in the military. Although her family was... She suggests that Harriet not spend time with the Martins, a local family of farmers whose son, Robert, is interested in Harriet. Instead, Emma plans to play matchmaker for Harriet and Mr. Elton, the vicar of the church in Highbury. Emma seems to have some success in her attempts to bring together Harriet Smith and Mr. Elton. The three spend a good deal of leisure time together and he seems receptive to all of Emma s suggestions. The friendship between Emma and Harriet does little good for either of them, however. Harriet indulges Emma s worst qualities, giving her opportunity to meddle and serving only to flatter her. Emma in turn fills Harriet Smith with grand pretensions that do not suit her low situation in society. When Robert Martin proposes to Harriet, she rejects him based on Emma s advice, thinking that he is too common. Mr. Knightley criticizes Emma s matchmaking, since he thinks that the dependable Robert Martin is Harriet s superior, for while he is respectable, she is from uncertain origins. Emma s sister, Isabella, and her husband, Mr. John Knightley, visit Highbury, and Emma uses their visit as an opportunity to reconcile with Mr. Knightley after their argument over Harriet. • 32. What Is Optimized Design In most parameter tables, the data values or keys are stored discretely and unevenly [13]. However, parameter values do not generally exist explicitly in data tables. Thus, searching is processed for the stored data keys. This chapter explains the details of the optimized design, the algorithm framework and the advantages. 6.1 Initial Step In this algorithm, the first step is differentiated from the remaining steps. Let N be the initial n most significant bits of the input bits A. Let k be the length of the generator polynomial K(x) used for generating the CRC value. The binary numbers of N and A are given by: N=[a1a2.....an] and A=[a1a2....ak] (6.1) The binary number of N is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each slice uses a separate table. The slices are represented by M_1^(t 1),M_2^(t 2).....M_t^(t 1)of length m1,m2...mt. The tables may vary from the tables used in the initial step. • 33. Characteristics Of An Anglo-Saxon Hero In Beowulf Debi Mazar once said, A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who tries to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and someone who really deeply cares. In Beowulf, the Unknown Author of this Anglo Saxon poem, explains the battle between good and evil. An Anglo Saxon Hero is someone who is loyal, who has honor and respect, they don t do things for rewards because they ll have that sense of justice which is just as good. They are never concerned with themselves but the wellbeing of everyone around them and that s what makes them so great, their selfless acts change lives for the better. Beowulfexemplifies the characteristics of an Anglo Saxon Hero because he shows bravery and courage in a way nobody else does, he is honored by all and is beyond selfless. First of all, Beowulf shows courage and bravery on his way to find Grendel and battle him. He runs after him to find out where Grendel is going and why he won t let him battle, this shows bravery because most people don t run towards danger and Beowulf did exactly that. Beowulf runs towards danger throughout the entire poem, for example in the text it says, Have watched me rise from the darkness of war. Dripping with my enemy s blood. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all that raced from the earth, I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean and killing them one by one. (247 254). This is a great quote because it shows how it takes a great amount of bravery to battle someone that has greater than or equal strength compared to himself,(Beowulf) with it being night time it was hard to see let alone battle monsters. Another example of Beowulf showing courage is when he says, He needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I. My lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to... (263 264) because this shows that he doesn t like an unfair fight and believes whatever his opponent has to fight with he should have the same because that s what a fair fight consist of. Additionally, a person that has honor is someone who has an obligation to fulfil and they always keep an agreement. At the beginning of the poem Beowulf was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Incarceration Crime Rate Since the 1990s and the crime drop, there has been many questions to the reason why. Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner thoroughly looked through the different theories but came to a conclusion that the main reason crime had fallen is abortion (117 145). One of the reasons they discuss is whether or not the increase of incarceration affects the fluctuations in crimerates. Levitt and Dubner suggest that the crime system became relaxed due avoid racism; however, the crime rates then began to rise (122). Between 1980 and 2000, there was a fifteenfold increase in the number of people sent to prisonon drugcharges (Levitt, Dubner 123). Ouimet says [Spelman] estimates the relationship between incarceration and crime and comes up with an elasticity measure of 0.4, which means that an increase in incarceration of one percent will be followed by a drop in crime of 0.4% (par. 12). In other words, imprisonment only accounted for one fourth of the crime drop in the 1990s (Ouimet par. 12). Not all scholars however, believe that incarceration was responsible for the drop because of its inconsistency between states (Ouimet par. 13). In fact, they believe that states adjusted the incarceration rates due to the crime rates, the dependent and independent variables were flipped (Ouimet par. 13). Ouimet then goes into policing strategies, (another commonly known factor in affecting crime rates) and how those statistics match up with those of Canada. Though Ouimet uses evidence to prove that incarceration affects crime, he then disproves it by saying that it is to variant and is not consistent among states (pars. 12 13). This article is really good to look at another side of the crime drop. It brings in a good perspective and points; however, it ties the U.S. to Canada in which causes the author to broaden the argument instead of tying it down to specific ... Indian s didn t really have any sense of nationalism up until the British came to power. Kaviraj states it is often essential to ask whose history this is, in the sense of history for whom rather than history of whom. (Page 170) Because it depends on which said the story is told. In earlier periods of Indiathey felt a weaker version of patriotism which was an ancestor for Indian nationalism (Page 174) which would be different from today s patriotism and that there is no connection between being patriotic and being Indian. He says that the consciousness becomes nationalist before it becomes India s only because they happen to realize it later in time. Kaviraj regards India to be closely parallel to what Gramsci said about Italian nationalism. There are two conflicts, One of memorialism of Italy s Roman past to what it is today and, two today s modernity and the construction of the Italian identity. He compares the two because Italian history had some similar influences to that of colonialism.
