` In Kindred, Octavia Butler combines elements of science fiction and historical fiction to create a new
genre. The science fiction aspect allows Butler s main character, Dana, to travel back to a southern
plantation in the 1800s. The historical fiction part of the novel makes the story extremely believable
and realistic. Butler uses these two genres to expose the harsh realities of life for an African American
on an antebellum plantation in the 1800s, as well as to highlight that similar prejudices continue to
exist in California in the 1970s. Kindred does not fit neatly into one specific genre because it
incorporates elements from both science fiction and historical fiction which makes it into a new
category. Kindred has many elements of science fiction because the mysterious element of time travel
is key to the novel. In this novel, the main character, Dana, lives in California during 1976 and travels
back in time to the antebellum South. She routinely travels back in time to save her ancestor, Rufus,

In the Bildungsroman novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the protagonist Jean Louise Scout
Finch lives in Maycomb, Alabama. In Maycomb, races are segregated and people are alienated; Arthur
Boo Radley was isolated by most of Maycomb, for example. In the novel, Scout met people in
different social classes such as: Robert E. Lee Bob Ewell, Tom Robinson, Calpurnia, and Atticus
Finch. Through the use of complications, imageries, and characters, Lee implies stereotypes and how a
person s development can be impacted by social classes.
Complications Lee used displays how different types of social classes are treated differently. In
Maycomb, white people even if extremely poor such as Bob Ewell, receives more benefits than
African Americans. For instance, in the court case between Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson (an African
American), Judge Taylor and the rest of the jury claimed Tom as guilty, as if each guilty was a
separate stab between them (Lee 211). Bob Ewell accused Tom for raping his daughter, Mayella
Ewell. However, even though Tom was innocent, he was proven guilty just because he was an African
American. Instead, Bob Ewell should be convicted for abusing Mayella; he was not convicted due to
being white. The court case demonstrates social classes being treated differently because lower social

Chaucer s works, after The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde. This medieval work is not only
an average poem in the form of Chaucer s dream vision, but above all is possibly the first significant
work in English to use the iambic pentameter or decasyllabic couplets, which became an important
part of English literature. In the recent years, the poem has been the subject of several studies on
gender issues among many critics of literature, which have been trying to properly analyze and
interpret the content of the work. Many of literary scholars such as Elaine Tuttle Hansen, Carolyn
Dinshaw, Pricilla Martin and quite a few others unanimously argue that rather than a work about

students know that abortion is a horrible thing to do and help them understand that a child is being

this is not true, power can be used to help or protect individuals, which is exactly what the culture I
had observed does. In this essay, I will examine the performances of power that is observed
throughout the ritual ceremony, chanting in the Buddhism culture, displaying how the religion is used
for concealing relations of power within this definite culture. Through this examination, I will use the
theories of Karl Marx (religion as ideology) and Antonio Gramsci (hegemony being concept of

Anime is a term for Japanese animation. It is a unique, detailed, and popular form of animation. It
tends to dive deeper into the more serious topics as well as creating shows and series that really
capture a broad range of viewers attention. Normally, one would associate cartoons with children and
how they favor them. Not with Japan, however. People of all ages watch and enjoy anime. Most anime
series target younger and teen viewers, but there are some created for the older viewers as well. Anime
has a large abundance of categories such as comedy, romance, action, drama, and even pornography.
Anime had started to flourish shortly after World War II and it has continued to grow significantly
over the years. It continues to evolve and I firmly believe that it will still be relevant in the future due
