Aims
 To identify and describe the problems cause by using
Fossil Fuels.
 To identify and describe the advantages and
disadvantages of using Fossil Fuels in New Zealand.
Recap from Last Lesson!
 Where does NZ
get most of its
Energy from?
 What type of fuel
do we use the
most of?
What are fossil fuels and what
are they made from?
So what is the problem with
using Fossil Fuels?
The greenhouse
effect
These gases, which are
all naturally occurring,
act as a blanket,
trapping in the heat
and preventing it from
being reflected too far
from the Earth. They
keep the Earth's
average temperature at
about 15°C: warm
enough to sustain life
for humans, plants and
animals. Without these
gases, the average
temperature would be
about -18°C... too cold
for most life forms. This
natural warming effect
is also sometimes
called the greenhouse
effect
Much like the
inside of a car
parked in
sunlight

Warming and the greenhouse effect”.
2. Copy and complete the sentences using the words in the box below.
 Global warming is the
rise in ____________ of
the earths surface in the
last century. It is believed
to be caused by the
_____________ Effect.
 The greenhouse effect
occurs when certain gases
released by
burning______________,
trap the suns radiation
within the earths
___________ and cause
the average temperature of
the earth to increase.

Tasks – read the article headed “Oil find could have a big impact” and copy and
complete the table below. Find all the advantages and disadvantages of Oil
Exploration in New Zealand.
Advantages (good
things!)
Disadvantages (bad
things)
Useful Words
Exploration = Searching for something.
Territories = An area of land.
Delegates = someone who goes to a meeting.
Economic = money
Exacerbated = made worse
GDP – Gross Domestic Product (value of goods made by a
country)
Our Addiction to Oil
Problems and Solutions!
 Aim
 To identify and
