The Oxidation of Ethanol Essay
The Oxidation of Ethanol
Ethanol is a primary alcohol and can be oxidized to either an alderhyde or a carboxylic acid.
[IMAGE]CH3CH2OH + [O] CH3CHO + H2O
[IMAGE]CH3CH2OH + 2[O] CH3COOH + H2O
The purpose of this experiment is to oxidize ethanol and then to test the product to determine whether
it has been oxidised to ethanal or oxidised to ethanoic acid.
Method
We added 6cm³ of water to a pear shaped flask, then added 2cm³ of concentrated sulphuric acid, and
set up the apparatus as shown below, but with a stopper in place of the dropping funnel. We ensured
that all the glass joints were greased.

Safety
There were many hazards in the context of this experiment in some of the chemicals we used that we
needed to be aware of.
Using ethanol was a hazard as it was highly flammable above 13ºC and had a narcotic effect as a
result of inhalation of the vapour. It is also dangerous with oxidising agents as uncontrollable reactions
take place. To prepare for these hazards we needed to keep the solution away from the bunsen flame
and wear goggles in case any uncontrollable reactions happened.
The sodium dichromate we used was very toxic and could cause cancer by inhalation and was harmful
if swallowed or if contacted with skin sensitisation could occur. Ulceration also could have occurred
on damaged skin. It is also dangerous with combustible materials as it forms explosive or vigorously
burning mixtures. To prepare for this hazard we needed to be careful not to spill any and to wear lab
coats and goggles.
Sulphuric acid that we used is very corrosive and can cause severe burns. It is dangerous with sodium
as dangerous reactions could take place and also water as vigorous reactions occur when the
concentrated acid is diluted. To prepare for this hazard we needed to again make sure we wore lab
coats and goggles to protect our eyes, skin and clothing.
The sodium carbonate we used was an irritant on the eyes, skin and

Blown Glass
What is abstract blown glass art? This seems like such a simple question, but it really is not simple to
answer. Blown glass basically means that the glass was crafted into a specific form by a glassblower.
Abstract art is said to have come from many different movements, including expressionism. This type
of art can come in many different forms, including computer generation art, painting, sculpting, and
glass blowing. Abstract art basically means that the end result does not have a face, so it is somewhat
unrecognizable.
Abstract blown glass is typically derived from scientific glassblowing. Usually, scientific glassblowers
will make lab items, such as beakers and tubes, but sometimes, you will find a rare scientific
glassblower who also

The Tragedy of Syria
It was two am in the morning and I couldn t sleep yet. Hours separated us from changing history. It
was extremely hard to control the thoughts spinning in my mind,
What will happen tomorrow? , Is it a start of a new life? I finally slept dreaming that there will be a
new sunrise tomorrow, a sunrise after decades of darkness.
I woke up the next day as eager as possible and went to school. All day thoughts were still going back
and forth. Will we be able to make it? I think I am just over ambitious and it will be a normal day .
Rushing back home after school, I entered my home and opened the news and there it was A protest in
the heart of
Damascus calling for freedom . I couldn t stop myself from screaming. A storm of emotions blew up
my heart. Feelings of happiness, anxiety, tension, and fear were all bumping inside me. A protest in
Syria was literally a miracle as many declared. Syria has been called the kingdom of silence for more
than forty years. What happened was very tremendous, leaving a day Syrians will remember
accurately, March 15 2011.
That was the start, and now who haven t heard of Syria on the news and international news agencies
every single day. More than two thirds of the Syrian cities are destroyed and more than six million
people got displaced from their homes.
Reports show that there is a minimum of two hundred thousand person killed making
Syria the tragedy of the century.
I have lived the severest days since then. What I went through was

The Collegiate Athletic Association Of College Athletics
The NCAA continues to prohibit payment to its student athletes, while its member universities
continue to seek new ways to increase revenue from the athlete s accomplishments. The National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the nonprofit governing body of college athletics. The
primary task of the NCAA is to oversee the actions of all student athletes and universities to verify
that both parties abide by the rules and regulations within the principles of amateurism, defined by the
Association. However, the NCAA has been ruthlessly exploiting the athlete s talents in the hopes of
maximizing profits. The NCAA and its member universities carry little concern regarding the success
of student athletes, currently; their priorities have become profit oriented. In the rapidly growing
industry of College Athletics, a one sided business relationship has evolved between colleges and
student athletes. Former University of Connecticut basketball standout Shabazz Napier has recalled
his experience as a collegiate athlete in a statement: there have been hungry nights where I m not able
to eat, and yet I m still forced to play to the best of my abilities. After I noticed my jersey being sold I
felt like I should get something in return. [1] The aforementioned Napier has spent, on average 43.3
hours per week on sports related activities [2]. With copious amounts of time dedicated towards the
sport of basketball, he lacked the ability to seek employment at a professional job.

Analysis Of To This Day By Shane Koyczan
Shane Koyczan is known in the world as an award winning spoken word poet. He was born in
Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Soon after birth he went to live with his grandparents in Penticton,
British Columbia. Shane s childhood was extremely hard and painful. He had to deal with malicious
bullying, so severe that it led to him suffering depression. He believed that he could never find
happiness or love. He carried the effects of the mental, emotional, and physical abuse he endured
throughout his childhood into his adult life. Information about Shane Koyczan s life was provided by
the site called, The Poetry Foundation . When Shane graduated at Okanagan College, he started to
explore poetry and speaking. He wanted to send a message to the world about the harm social injustice
can cause. He also wanted to inspire and help people who are going through difficult times by sharing
his experiences. As Shane started to write poems, his theme would be on social injustice, love,
happiness, and ideas. He would use the painful childhood memories and incorporate poetic elements
such as metaphor and rhyme. He uses these elements in one of his poems called, To This Day . A
spoken word poem that tells the story of shane s childhood. Three lines read, To this day he is a stick

The Land Of The Long White Cloud Essay
Aotearoa, The land of the long white cloud , is known today by many people as New Zealand, the
third most beautiful country in the world. If one is planning on moving there or visiting, it definitely a
country that will not disappoint. New Zealand is known for many things, especially their outstanding
food and their successful economic situation. During 800 C.E. a group of people from Polynesia,
made their way over to New Zealand. In the 17th century the same group of Polynesians evolved as
the Maori, a spiritual group. The Maori are responsible for New Zealand s original name Aotearoa,
The land of the long white cloud . However, that name was changed when a Dutch explorer landed on
their land, he changed the name to New Zealand, after a Dutch province. When the Europeans came to
New Zealand, the Maori tribe was pushed out of their homes, farms and businesses. It was not until
1840 that Britain signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which protected the Maori tribe for fear of the
Europeans. New Zealand was a colony governed by the British until 1907. Now the queen of the
United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth, only has a small amount of control over New Zealand. The Maori
culture still exists in New Zealand today. Visitors who go to New Zealand can experience their food,
daily rituals, and song and dance if they would like to learn more about their culture. The New
Zealand rugby team before every game performs the traditional Maori war dance, Kapa Haka, to scare
their opponent. The

User Side Influences On Website Performance
Connection speed
There are many user side influences on website performance but the first user side influence on
website performance is that it s very crucial to look at its connection speed that the user is functioning
on. But now there are numerous different components in which I will need to look at to entirely clarify
how the user has an influence on how good a website does but there are also a few other reasons that
users sometimes can t actually help and simply have to put up with which will all be described in due
course. The four key user side impacts on website performance as connection speed is involved
Server Side
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the quantity of data traffic which can be downloaded from a website per second. The
data traffic works like any usual traffic, if they are lots of vehicles on the road, it will take you a lot
longer to reach than if you were the single person driving on the road. The data traffic works alike e.g.
if they are lots of people transferring from a website all at the same time the download speed will be
much slower. Yet, if you are the only user that is copying from a website your computer s speed would
be much faster because you will be able to utilize most of the data available to download.

Dial up internet is the easiest type of internet that a person can essentially use. Dial up involves of a

Benefits And Benefits Of Therapeutic Privilege
Aims and objectives
In medicine, because of the principles of self determination, the patient should be given all the
relevant information in order to allow them to give fully informed consent. However, when doctors
exercise the therapeutic privilege, they apply their professional opinion to assess when information
should be withheld. When a concept as fundamental as consent is undermined extensive research is
necessary. Hence, why I want to investigate doctors justifications and patients reactions to therapeutic
privilege.
Lawrie argues, even those most dedicated to patient autonomy will allow for the use of therapeutic
privilege. Therapeutic privilege occurs when information relating to treatment and the associated risks
is withheld because doctors believe disclosure will have a detrimental effect, to the extent that
recovery may be affected. Therapeutic privilege is judicially confirmed in Sidaway, and recognised in
subsequent cases such as Chester. Sidaway confirms that doctors must justify why they are choosing
not to fully disclose to the patient.
The research purpose is to assess the use of therapeutic privilege. Therefore my research has the
following two objectives:
To evaluate what justifications doctors have for using therapeutic privilege in practice.
To explore the opinions of previous patients in relation to not being allowed to give fully informed
consent and what effects they feel this may have.

Vatican Cremation Research Paper
Ashes of cremated individuals should not be scattered, kept at home, or turned into jewelry as these
could constitute grounds for being denied a Christian funeral, according to a new Vatican ruling.
Although the Vatican prefers burial over cremationfor Catholics, a new decree authorized by Pope
Francis said the ashes of the cremated body should be stored either in a church or a cemetery. The
ruling also suggested that those who insist on scattering the ashes of their departed loved ones should
be denied a Christian funeral, The Times reports.
Since the 1970s, the number of cremations after death in the UK has more than doubled to 400,000
every year. There is also an increasingly popular trend of converting ashes into gemstones or turning
them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It noted the increase of the burial practices all over the world which run in contrast against the church
s faith.
The ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is in a cemetery or, in certain cases,
in a church or an area which has been set aside for this purpose, the Vatican said in its ruling.
In addition, the Vatican ruled against storing the ashes of the departed at home, dividing them among
family members, and other rituals that are not linked the Catholic faith. This includes scattering of the
ashes and preserving them in mementos and other forms.
Earlier this year, DesiringGod.org founder Pastor John Piper wrote a blog entry explaining why
Christians should bury instead of cremate their dead. However, he clarified that he aims to persuade
believers to lean toward burial as a preference rather than a command, The Christian Post relays.
Citing Philippians 1:20, Piper said Christians should glorify God through their body both in life and
death and that the body should be treated as God s dwelling place. However, he cautioned against
condemning or ostracizing those who still choose to cremate the remains of their loved ones instead of
burying

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL), also known as lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma in the WHO
classification, is a malignant expansion of immature lymphoid cells that results from multi step
genetic changes in a single lymphoid progenitor cell. Its incidence peaks between the ages of 2 and 4
years(1(.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children (2). ALL causes
77% of children leukemia, and acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) counts for 11% (3). ALL is
categorized based on cytogenetic and molecular criteria into a few subgroups for diagnosis, prognosis
and treatment (4 6).
There is not any comprehensive information available in Iran about the prevalence of leukemia;
however research indicates a high prevalence (7). Research showed that the prevalence of leukemia is
16.2% in Iran, which is a higher prevalence compared with skin, lung and breast cancers (8).
Acquired genetic changes that are likely to contribute to development of ALL include the

Two different forms are identified for ROR1 (13). One form lack all the out of cellular domains,
which is called shortened or truncated ROR1 (t ROR1) (13). The second form lake the intra cellular,
and transmembrane domains. However most of studies have been performed on the long form (13).
Some studies indicated that the intra cellular domain lacks biologic activity, while others showed its
vital role in transforming signal (11).
Many functions have been described for ROR; they are involved in cell polarity and tumor like
behavior like migration and invasion (14, 15). The increased expression of ROR1 had been reported in
acute and chronic lymphoblastic leukemia (16 18) and mantle cell lymphoma (19). Though the high
expression of ROR2 is reported in osteosarcoma (15) and renal cell carcinoma (20). ROR1 also had
been known as a diagnostic marker in chronic lymphoblastic leukemia (CLL)

Air Force Re-Enlistment Analysis
For those nearing the end of a first term of enlistment, a decision that can take one s life down two
drastically different paths must be made. For some this decision can be easy, and for others it can be
one of the hardest choices to make.
If the decision to re enlist becomes the right course of action, it is a relatively quick process. The Air
Force does its best to make the re enlistment process as easy as possible.
Once an individual enters his or her eligibility window, we contact them and set up an appointment to
begin the process of re enlistment, said Staff Sgt. Catherine Sweatt, 341st Force Support Squadron

Re enlistment is not always the best choice or option for a member. There are many first term Airmen
who are not 100 percent sure continuing their Air Force career is truly for them. It is a major decision
where an Airman must weigh their options and pick the best prospect for them.
One option a first term Airman has when coming to the end of their first term is the opportunity to
extend their enlistment for 12 months for personal convenience.
Per AFI 36 2606, Re enlistment in the United States Air Force, members are allowed to extend for 12
months, as long as it s the first extension on the re enlistment. This option is not offered to career or
second term Airmen.
For me, I feel as if this job gives me first hand experience with how Airmen are making life changing
decisions that directly impact the Air Force, their families and future goals, said Sweatt.
Signing a multi year contract with the world s most elite and powerful Air Force is not a decision to be

The Pros And Cons Of Two Dollar Click
Two Dollar Click is a paid to click site, offering rewards that are just too much to be taken seriously.
They have been online for a few years and somehow they are still going.
The owner Jordan Welsh, which is thought to be an alias, has been involved with other scam sites Six
Dollar Clicks, Ten Dollar Clicks, NeoDollar, Bux Inc and perhaps more.
Another name that comes up when researching these sites is Michael Pratt, who is a well known
scammer. However, he claims not to be running the scam sites, he sells the scripts that make the sites
function.
Anyways, although convinced this was a scam I signed up to have a closer look.

To have more ads to view you will have to upgrade to premium membership.
In order to be paid you need to have earnt at least $1000, which is a huge amount. Most PTC sites
have payment thresholds of a few dollars. The payments can be made through Paypal or Payza.
Payments are made on a net 60 basis, which means you will recieve your money 60 days after asking
for it.
I don t think you should be under any illusion, you will never be paid. Well known PTC sites that have
been around for a few years rarely offer ads to watch even at $1. So $2 a click is not possible, don t be
taken in by the hype.
How do Two Dollar Click make money?
To fund the click payments they provide advertising. For an ad to be watched or clicked 1000 times it
only costs $5 or 1/2 a cent per click. You can order up to 25000 clicks, always for the same price of
1/2 cent per click. Premium members can also buy banner ads.
Consequently, Two Dollar Click are paying out $2 for something for which they are paid 1/2 cent.
Who pays the other $1.995? No one, they cannot generate sufficient money to pay their members,
clearly this is unsustainable.

Description Of The Vehicle Tracking System
Transportation act as important part in our life, the people can be connected from place to place but it
is still complicated to track the vehicle. (Sumit et Ajila,2015)
The first implementation for vehicle tracking system was in the shipping industry because it is a vital
need to know where each vessel was at any given time. These days, however, with different types of
technology growing at a wide space, tracking and display vehicle locations in real time uses
automated vehicle tracking system. (SeokJu et all,2014)
The vehicle tracking system is very useful in tracking and management for fleet. It is the technology
used to determine the location of a vehicle using different methods like GPS and other navigation
systems operating which uses satellites and ground based stations. Modern vehicle tracking systems
use GPS technology to locate and keep monitoring our vehicle anywhere on earth, but sometimes
using different types of automatic vehicle location technology are still another option. The vehicle
tracking system is fixed inside the car and gives location of the car in real time and the data can even
be downloaded in a computer which can be used for making analysis in future as it can be viewed on
electronic maps through internet and software. The device contains modern hardware and software
components that help in tracking and locating vehicles in both online and offline mode. A tracking

In the novel, Passing Time, Ehrhart experiences change. For instance, Ehrhart begins to realize that the
war was a huge mistake on the government s behalf. Ehrhart believed that the government shouldn t

of the soldiers, including Ehrhart, were traumatized by the killings during the war. Ehrhart often

The police treated the protest as if it was a riot. The police didn t give a reasonable warning, but
insisted on beating civilians to death because the police didn t agree with the anti war members

and Ehrhart tackled the police officer to the ground (Ehrhart 166). A man had to help Ehrhart drag the
woman to safety after the woman was saved from being beaten to death. Another event that showed
the effects of the anti war movement well after Ehrhart returned from the war was when Ehrhart was
at another anti war protest. Ehrhart was explaining to the public why he decided to go against the war.
Ehrhart explained that he couldn t support something so pointless (Ehrhart 177). Ehrhart believed the
government had made the people believe that they were trying to stop the vast spread of communism.
Ehrhart believed that the government was lying and that President Nixon wanted to start and win
another war (Ehrhart 169). Ehrhart often expressed his anti war movement views to his crew mate,
Roger. When talking to Roger, Ehrhart explains his theory on why he feels lied to by the government.
Ehrhart explained to Roger that Vietnam is nothing but a way for the United States to express their
dominance and control. For example Ehrhart says, what we want is freedom to do business on our
own terms and as much of the damned pie we can grab (Ehrhart 181).

Theme Of Power And Control In The Handmaid s Tale
It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control on its citizens for a
society to function properly. However, overuse and misuse of power and control in a society
eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopic
futuristic novel, The Handmaid s Tale, Margaret Atwood demonstrates the idea of power and control
through the oppressive society Gilead. The government establishes power and control with the Wall,
the Salvagings, and military control. As well, the government s unique use of the Aunts and Red
Centres demonstrates the unfair oppression and indoctrination of the women and potential Handmaids
within the society. This type of control can be compared to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Offred continuously recounts the advice that Aunt Lydia tells the Handmaids throughout her story.
This indoctrination makes the Handmaids become so accustomed to this new way of life that it
becomes normal to them: Ordinary, said Aunt Lydia, is what you are used to. This may not seem
ordinary to you now, but after a time it will. It will become ordinary (Atwood 33). This proves that
Gilead can transform the natural human response of fear into blankness. Oppression and torture
become accepted because the Handmaids eventually become used to these ideas. The Aunts brainwash
the Handmaids into gradually accepting this new way of life. Once the Handmaids accept this way of
life, it truly shows the persuasive nature of the Aunts and the power both they and the government
hold over the Handmaids. An example of the Aunts brainwashing the Handmaids is when the Aunts
make them believe and accept that Janine was responsible her gang rape. Offred describes the
persuasive nature of the Aunts to the reader: But whose fault was it? Aunt Helena says, holding up one
plump finger. Her fault, her fault, her fault, we chant in unison. Who led them on? Aunt Helena
beams, pleased with us. She did. She did. She did. Why did God allow such a terrible thing to happen?
Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson (Atwood 72). This instruction and repetition
the Aunts use demonstrates the inequality and imbalance between them and the Handmaids, who they
are teaching to submit and behave. The Aunts also help to establish power and control with fear and
intimidation. For instance, when Moira was caught from attempting to escape the Red Center, the
Aunts tortured her by beating her feet with steel cables. Moira s punishment is a reminder that the
Aunts have the power to torture the Handmaids, which creates the fear and establishes the

The strength of any school relies on the strength of its leader and his/her ability to effectively manage
the organization. Principals must have impressive leadership skills to manage the diverse school
environment. Leadership plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of an educational organization from
goal setting to accomplishing goals. Research has proven that successful leaders create effective
schools. The first dimension of leadership, understanding ones self and others purpose is ... Show

In addition to that, all schools are not the same; they differ in enrollment, cultural make up,
socioeconomic status, district guidelines, and funding just to name a few differences. When you take
into account all the differences that make up a school, it is understandably obvious that behavior of
people working in the school will be different as well. Dimension two, understanding the complexity
of organizational life, was designed to build knowledge and assist with creating positive cultures and
climates for the internal and external environment of the school. This dimension will assist with the
important concept of structuring a school in a manner that enables and builds a trust based climate and
culture where individuals work together to attain goals. While leaders work towards goals, they must
also keep in mind the needs of a diverse society, fairness, code of ethics, and how to remove fear or
intimidation from the school. When this dimension is used along with the first dimension,
understanding self and others, a leader is prepared with the necessary tools needed to understand what
style of structure will be most successful with his/her personality and the diverse needs of staff.
Effective leaders have a mission and goals in mind that they want to achieve. School staff has needs
and wishes that must be acknowledged. When the leadership of a school is able to balance the two, a
readiness of followers to attain goals is likely to happen.

Unit 14 Event Driven Research Paper
Key Features of Event Driven Programming
Event Driven Programming consists of a programming paradigm, a programming paradigm is a basic
style for computer programming. It serves as a way for building structure for a computer program. A
paradigm in its simplest form is a typical example or pattern of something, a pattern or model.
An Event Driven Program is not restrained by the style of procedural programs, instead of the top to
bottom functionality of a procedural program, where the code starts at the top and just reads down, on
an already determined path, instead of this, event driven programming has code placed in logical areas
of events, this code is not used in a determined order as the user has full control over the program by

This could be something as simple as operating a leaver to open a hidden door. Another advantage
within event driven programming is the use of sensor technology to operate functions within a
program. This allows hardware to easily interact with applications within the computer, an example of
such application is the ability to have a microphone plugged in the recording jack of the computer and
it too only activate when the microphone receives a signal over a certain decibel level so that the
microphone can constantly be on. A use of such feature could be within multiplayer video games
where concentration is needed constantly so fiddling about with buttons to activate the microphone is
distracting from the game and could make you

1860 Economic Growth
The United States government encouraged economic growth greatly between the years 1860 1900.
The United States government during the Civil War era was run by the Republicans. The Republicans
held the majority in Congress in 1860 because the southern states had seceded from the Union. This
majority gave the republicans the power to implement the policies in their platform which was based
on the American System. The Republican platform of 1860 was centered on encouraging economic
growth and developing a national economy. A few specific policies that the Republicans passed were
the Pacific Railway Act, the Morill Tariff, and the Morill Land Grant Act. Each of these three policies
were aimed at encouraging economic growth in our nation. The republicans passed many laws with
the sole purpose of encouraging economic growth and developing a strong economy. The US
government could be considered somewhat laissez faire in their neglect to place much needed
regulations on big business and corporations. Despite this fact, the United States government was
definitely not laissez faire during this time period due to the fact that they took a very active role in
our nation s economy. Without the policies passed by the national government during this time period,
it is highly unlikely that our nation s economy would have grown to the extent that it did, and the

The Whipping By Robert Hayden
The Whipping by Robert Hayden
Whether it be as small as an argument, or as traumatizing as abuse, people struggle with issues
involving family at some point in their lifetime. The poem, The Whipping by Robert Hayden, tells
exactly that. As a young boy, Hayden moved from family to family as a foster child. One family in
particular traumatized him to the point where he still has not forgiven them. With each new family,
Hayden experienced new forms of abuse. The Whipping by Robert Hayden gives insight to the life of
a young boy and his struggles with abuse as he travels from family to family. Hayden s The Whipping

remembered and exactly how he felt during the beatings. The first person usage along with the

support this, James states, Still, the fourth stanza seems to me to be the most moving because the

William Wallace As A Hero From Mel Gibson s Braveheart
Joseph Campbell defines a hero as an individual who is capable of leaving their ordinary everyday life
in order to assist those who need aid and support in a separate world. According to Campbell, the hero
must complete the majority of his twelve stages in order to classify as a hero. William Wallace, from
Mel Gibson s film Braveheart, displays all of Joseph Campbell s stages of a hero through his conquest
to gain freedom for his home country, Scotland. At the beginning of the film, the hero William
Wallace is introduced as a young child to represent his journey of becoming a hero begins at a young
age. Young Wallace lives with his father and his brother in a very poor village. One day Wallace

Wallace and he knew he must do something about the English s evil reign. Wallace says to his father, I
can fight. (Braveheart), causing a small vergence into Campbell s stage the call to adventure . The
father declines his son s offer and rides off to battle. Sadly, Wallace s father does not return from the
mission and young William Wallace must now go and live with his uncle, Argyle Wallace. When
Wallace first encounters his uncle he is entering Campbell s stage of meeting the mentor and he

Echo And Narcissus Analysis
Comparing Tragedies: Echo vs. Narcissus
Ovid displays an impressive grasp of language in his poem Narcissus and Echo which allows him to
address many classic themes, the chief of these being the theme of unfulfilled love and the suffering it
brings. The most notable instances of this type of suffering are Echo and Narcissus transformations;
Echo withers away until she is naught but a voice, and Narcissus is trapped in place until he eventually
transforms into a flower. Upon finishing this tale, the reader is left with much to consider, including
the question: which fate is worse? Of course, both fates are certainly cruel, but they given the specific
themes and diction that Ovid uses when describing each pseudo death, Echo s punishment seems far
less dehumanizing than Narcisssus ; whereas Narcissus is completely objectified by his transformation
into a beautiful flower, Echo at least maintains the power of voice.
Given Ovid s diction during Echo s introduction, it is clear that her fate is directly tied to the power of
speech and voice. Ovid calls her resounding Echo as if this is her title, and the use of the word
resounding is very important (line 26). Why not call her loud or huge or any of the other synonyms
tied to the word resounding ? One can only assume that Ovid wanted to make use of the word s other
definition: resonant and reverberant. By essentially introducing her as Reverberant Echo and
mentioning that her speech was strange , Ovid immediately alerts the reader to what is both Echo s
downfall and her saving grace: Words have power. Echo over uses words in her favor when she d talk
and talk,/ to give her sister nymphs just enough/ time to slip away before they were found out, by Juno
(lines 38 40), and eventually, her speech turns on her when she is able to do little more than repeat
Narcissus words back to him despite how much she wishes to sing his praises. In the end, however,
Echo s final punishment is to become no more than a voice, no more than a literal echo. Surely, this
fate is cruel, but perhaps it is not completely unforgiving; though it is very little consolation, Echo at
least maintains the power of voice, and however diluted this power might be, Ovid writes,

The Memoir of Old Elizabeth Essays
The memoir of Old Elizabeth presents a rare and important slave narrative in which the stories of
African American women intersect with the experiences of African American people in roles of
religious leadership. Elizabeth broke many of societies conventions at the time by preaching and
holding religious meeting despite being woman. Her religious work was met with backlash from the
church and from many other people who did not accept the idea of a woman leading religious
services, yet she continued to practice until her health would no longer allow for it. This is unusual as
it spends most of the narrative on the time after she was free rather than focusing on the time that she
was enslaved the way that many slave narratives do.

The influences of the religious teaching that she received from her parents in her early childhood
shaped the lifestyle, which she led up until her death. Elizabeth describes her father reading to her on
the Sabbath day and remarks that she Felt the overshadowing of the lords spirit . At one point in her
life, when she was around twelve she became so ill that she assumed she would die, and during this
time vividly hallucinated that Jesus came to her. This sparked her to become even more religious than
she had been in the past, and prompted her to continue a lifestyle of prayer and intense religious
devotion despite living in a place where most people did not pray, and where she was often mocked
for the amount of prayer that she preformed. This influence of religion in her early life proves that
there were some serious discrepancies in how religion was viewed from plantation to plantation.
Elizabeth s early childhood was filled with religion, mainly thanks to the teaching of her parents, and
on that particular plantation it was not considered odd, yet on the next plantation that Elizabeth lived
on there was no religion and she was openly mocked for being religious.
As Elizabeth got older her sense of religious fervor did not fade, and she continued to practice as a
Christian. She was freed by a man who felt that slavery should only be for a term of time and not for a

Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber Point Of View
In Hemingway s short story Short happy Life of Francis Macomber, Hemingway uses author
techniques of perspective to show readers the characterization of the three main protagonists in this
story. Hemingway creates a multipart claim using perspective as well as dialogue to show readers a
pervasive, negative tone carried throughout the story. Wilson, Francis, and Margaret are characterized
by multiple perspectives with multiple traits and negative aspects to their characters. Wilson s state of
mind is quite judgmental towards the Macombers, basing his thoughts on their actions. However, he

Wilson then couldn t believe Francis approached him to ask if he was going to mention the situation

Hemingway uses Wilson s inner thoughts on Francis as a perspective to express his judgment towards
others. Later, Wilson began to connect in some type of way with Francis through their discussion on
strategies for catching the lion.Wilson goes on to discuss how inaccurate it is to leave a wounded lion
out in the wild for the safety of others that may be roaming. Through the dialogue between him and
Francis, Wilson goes into explanation on how Francis ideas won t work for various reasons. The
discussion demonstrates the interest Francis has on the structure of hunting a lion and the connection
they begin to develop. The dialogue written by Hemingway allows the reader see Wilson s judgment
about Francis slowly fading as Francis is now attracted to the technique and strategy on

Beowulf and Gilgamesh
Comparative English Essay
Compare the Beowulf poet s presentation of the battles with Grendel and his mother with the
Gilgamesh poet s depiction of Gilgamesh battles with Huwawa and the Bull of Heaven.
Fame and glory have been the most admirable characteristics in the middle Ages and even before
Christ in the ancient civilizations. The epics of Gilgamesh and Beowulf are stories of heroism and
immortality gained through fame. The aim of the main characters, Beowulf and Gilgamesh, is to be a
good warrior by being courageous, respectful and prudent, a protector and servant to their king (only

Enkidu and Gilgamesh can only win against nature and even gods by cooperating, which again is a
sign of culture. It shows us that a civilization can withstand everything and even fight the Gods plans.
In the Beowulf poem the battle scenes are described more vividly descriptive and including a lot of
symbolism. The first fight is between Beowulf and Grendel, a fiend out of hell, [ ] grim demon
haunting the marches, marauding round the heath and the desolate fens; he had dwelt for a time in
misery among the banished monsters, Clain s clan, whom the Creator had outlawed and condemned as
outcasts. (p. 6) Beowulf sets out to kill this monster in order to achieve fame. He isn t forced to do so,
especially as Grendel doesn t attack the Geats (his clan) but the Danes. Nevertheless Beowulf settles
out to destroy the demon and declares that he will fight Grendel there is a feast: Now I mean to be a
match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat. (p. 15) Afterwards there is a feast in Hereot
and at dusk Beowulf prepares for the fight and awaits Grendel s attack. Then down the brave man lay
with his bolster under his head and his whole company of sea rovers at rest beside him. Beowulf s
companions stay at his side and this is a symbol for their closed circle of society. The Germanic

The Federalism Of The United States
Americans utilize the Federalism idea as putting into effect the Constitution for Federal, State, and
Local governments. These areas are served as different areas with different needs and goals within the
federalist theory. The National Government has expressed powers over the nation and subjects that
effect our nation. The State has limited powers that are involved within the State s boundaries. The
local government is expressed to help regulate the states. All together the governments make one
unitary system that can metaphorically be described as a cake. The breakup of federalism started out
being broken up in layers, like a layer cake, with distinct separated powers of National government
and State. Accordingly, as the New Federalism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Antifederalist persuaded that the Federalist would favor slavery, and people s rights would be in

Does The Fruit Fly Experiment
Introduction
The purpose of this conducting this lab is to see how the rocket can be changed physically to make it
fly higher up after being launched. Not only is the rocket going to fly higher but also have to test to
see if there is a way to thoroughly protect an egg after landing to keep it from cracking/breaking.
Research on the average height a rocket flies based on the PSI used showed that the higher the PSI the
higher it tends to fly. Experimental Design
The experimental question is Will the amount of air pressure change the height the rocket flies?. The
independent variable is the amount of pressure in the rocket. The dependent variable is how high the
rocket flies. The control is a bottle with just air no water launched at 60psi.
Hypothesis
If the air pressure is raised higher than the other experimental group s air pressure then the rocket will
fly higher because of the increased force pushing off the water to make it fly higher.

these errors could be to have one group work on the rockets. Another group taking all the data so one

Pros And Cons Of Gambling Addiction
Gambling addiction can be a serious a problem, for some more than others. Some have the self control
to know when enough is enough, and then some don t. After reading the article it is safe to say that
Mr. Watanabe had some serious issues. Not only did he have a serious gambling problem, he also had
a drinking and drug problem. These two together is not a good combination. This was not your normal
gambling issue, this was the biggest loss in Vegas history of 127 million dollars! Seeing this from an
outsider s perspective, there are two different ways you can look at the situation. You can either feel
sorry for him and feel that he was treated wrongly and unlawfully, or one can feel no remorse for him
and that he brought it all upon himself. After much thought, I have a firm stance that what was going
on in those casinos was one, illegal and two, outright just wrong. Mr. Watanabe was absolutely taken
advantage of.
As a young boy Mr. Watanabe had a wealthy family was a very successful business man and was a
chief executor of his father s business by the age of 20. After years of owning this business he sold it
for millions and decided he wanted to have fun for a while and be stress free. Gambling is fun, right?
He began gambling at a Harrah s casino in Iowa back in 2003. He was one of the casinos biggest
gamblers at the casino and everyone knew him very well there. He had also traveled to Vegas to
gamble and that s where his serious gambling, drug and alcohol abuse began.

Agriculture In Mesoamerican Civilization
The Mesoamerican people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere developed independently from the
rest of the world by natural barriers set by oceans to both the east and the west. From the time period
spanning from 1200s BCE to 1500s CE, the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs lived on the isolated land for
centuries, establishing their distinctive scientific and academic achievements. At the other side of the
globe in Mesopotamia, a civilization in the form of a city state called Sumer also incorporated
achievements similar to that of the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs. The extensive use of irrigation was

Throughout the three civilizations, various methods of dealing with crops were introduced in attempts
of increasing yield and production. The Olmecs developed irrigation, which made agriculture an
important element of Mesoamerican life as it brought surpluses that led to population growth and
civilization expansion. Alongside irrigation is the extensive planting and harvesting of crops like
beans, squash, and especially maize that became the basis and stable crops of the community. The
Mayans continued the agricultural success of the preceding people by draining swamps and erecting
platforms for farming. These two practices greatly expanded the amount of land agriculture could take
place in a geography without vast fertile lands, further leading to population boost and empire
building in addition to the long lasting practice of irrigation. With with the aid of innovations made
into reality by the two previous groups of people, the Aztecs kept the tradition of constant
improvement to current conditions. Building up on the Mayan efforts of draining swamps, the Aztecs
developed Chinampas. These aquatic water beds that acted as floating islands extended the existing
use of irrigation on the rich aquatic environment of the capital, Tenochtitlan. With these multiple
examples and instances of agricultural advancements that continued and improved on the products and
practices of previous civilizations, changes still coexist in the middle as the use of calendar differed
from one civilization to the next despite sharing a root of calendar

Since the volatility of floating rates causes costs for exports and imports. It also encourages
international capital flows which can profit the welfare of a country. Especially in case of developing
countries these capital flows can be very large. One big Problem of the exchange rate regimes is the
loss of monetary and fiscal possibilities to stabilize the economy as well as Limitation of the ability to
pursue domestic goals. There is a slight difference between a hard peg and a fixed exchange rate, since
the fix exchange rate can be with several countries whereas the hard peg only pegs it currency to one
foreign country. They have more or less the same ad and disadvantages, but with a fixed exchange

[IMAGE]CH3CH2OH + [O] CH3CHO + H2O [IMAGE]CH3CH2OH + 2[O] CH3COOH + H2O The purpose of this experiment is to oxidize ethanol and then to test the product to determine whether it has been oxidised to ethanal or oxidised to ethanoic acid. Method We added 6cm³ of water to a pear shaped flask, then added 2cm³ of concentrated sulphuric acid, and set up the apparatus as shown below, but with a stopper in place of the dropping funnel. We ensured that all the glass joints were greased. [IMAGE] We then had to make up a solution containing 5g of sodium ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Safety There were many hazards in the context of this experiment in some of the chemicals we used that we needed to be aware of. Using ethanol was a hazard as it was highly flammable above 13ºC and had a narcotic effect as a result of inhalation of the vapour. It is also dangerous with oxidising agents as uncontrollable reactions take place. To prepare for these hazards we needed to keep the solution away from the bunsen flame and wear goggles in case any uncontrollable reactions happened. The sodium dichromate we used was very toxic and could cause cancer by inhalation and was harmful if swallowed or if contacted with skin sensitisation could occur. Ulceration also could have occurred on damaged skin. It is also dangerous with combustible materials as it forms explosive or vigorously burning mixtures. To prepare for this hazard we needed to be careful not to spill any and to wear lab coats and goggles. Sulphuric acid that we used is very corrosive and can cause severe burns. This type of art can come in many different forms, including computer generation art, painting, sculpting, and glass blowing. It was extremely hard to control the thoughts spinning in my mind, What will happen tomorrow? , Is it a start of a new life? I finally slept dreaming that there will be a new sunrise tomorrow, a sunrise after decades of darkness. I woke up the next day as eager as possible and went to school. All day thoughts were still going back and forth. Will we be able to make it? I think I am just over ambitious and it will be a normal day . Rushing back home after school, I entered my home and opened the news and there it was A protest in the heart of Damascus calling for freedom . I couldn t stop myself from screaming. A storm of emotions blew up my heart. Feelings of happiness, anxiety, tension, and fear were all bumping inside me. A protest in Syria was literally a miracle as many declared. Syria has been called the kingdom of silence for more than forty years. What happened was very tremendous, leaving a day Syrians will remember accurately, March 15 2011. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the nonprofit governing body of college athletics. The primary task of the NCAA is to oversee the actions of all student athletes and universities to verify that both parties abide by the rules and regulations within the principles of amateurism, defined by the Association. However, the NCAA has been ruthlessly exploiting the athlete s talents in the hopes of maximizing profits. The NCAA and its member universities carry little concern regarding the success of student athletes, currently; their priorities have become profit oriented. In the rapidly growing industry of College Athletics, a one sided business relationship has evolved between colleges and student athletes. Former University of Connecticut basketball standout Shabazz Napier has recalled his experience as a collegiate athlete in a statement: there have been hungry nights where I m not able to eat, and yet I m still forced to play to the best of my abilities. If one is planning on moving there or visiting, it definitely a country that will not disappoint. New Zealand is known for many things, especially their outstanding food and their successful economic situation. During 800 C.E. a group of people from Polynesia, made their way over to New Zealand. In the 17th century the same group of Polynesians evolved as the Maori, a spiritual group. The Maori are responsible for New Zealand s original name Aotearoa, The land of the long white cloud . However, that name was changed when a Dutch explorer landed on their land, he changed the name to New Zealand, after a Dutch province. When the Europeans came to New Zealand, the Maori tribe was pushed out of their homes, farms and businesses. • 11. Benefits And Benefits Of Therapeutic Privilege Aims and objectives In medicine, because of the principles of self determination, the patient should be given all the relevant information in order to allow them to give fully informed consent. However, when doctors exercise the therapeutic privilege, they apply their professional opinion to assess when information should be withheld. When a concept as fundamental as consent is undermined extensive research is necessary. Hence, why I want to investigate doctors justifications and patients reactions to therapeutic privilege. Lawrie argues, even those most dedicated to patient autonomy will allow for the use of therapeutic privilege. Therapeutic privilege occurs when information relating to treatment and the associated risks is withheld because doctors believe disclosure will have a detrimental effect, to the extent that recovery may be affected. Therapeutic privilege is judicially confirmed in Sidaway, and recognised in subsequent cases such as Chester. Sidaway confirms that doctors must justify why they are choosing not to fully disclose to the patient. The research purpose is to assess the use of therapeutic privilege. Therefore my research has the following two objectives: To evaluate what justifications doctors have for using therapeutic privilege in practice. To explore the opinions of previous patients in relation to not being allowed to give fully informed consent and what effects they feel this may have. This includes scattering of the ashes and preserving them in mementos and other forms. Earlier this year, DesiringGod.org founder Pastor John Piper wrote a blog entry explaining why Christians should bury instead of cremate their dead. However, overuse and misuse of power and control in a society eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopic futuristic novel, The Handmaid s Tale, Margaret Atwood demonstrates the idea of power and control through the oppressive society Gilead. The government establishes power and control with the Wall, the Salvagings, and military control. This may not seem ordinary to you now, but after a time it will. It will become ordinary (Atwood 33). This proves that Gilead can transform the natural human response of fear into blankness. Oppression and torture become accepted because the Handmaids eventually become used to these ideas. The Aunts brainwash the Handmaids into gradually accepting this new way of life. Once the Handmaids accept this way of life, it truly shows the persuasive nature of the Aunts and the power both they and the government hold over the Handmaids. An example of the Aunts brainwashing the Handmaids is when the Aunts make them believe and accept that Janine was responsible her gang rape. Offred describes the persuasive nature of the Aunts to the reader: But whose fault was it? Aunt Helena says, holding up one plump finger. Her fault, her fault, her fault, we chant in unison. Who led them on? Aunt Helena beams, pleased with us. She did. She did. She did. Why did God allow such a terrible thing to happen? Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson (Atwood 72). This instruction and repetition the Aunts use demonstrates the inequality and imbalance between them and the Handmaids, who they are teaching to submit and behave. The Aunts also help to establish power and control with fear and intimidation. • 31. Echo And Narcissus Analysis Comparing Tragedies: Echo vs. Narcissus Ovid displays an impressive grasp of language in his poem Narcissus and Echo which allows him to address many classic themes, the chief of these being the theme of unfulfilled love and the suffering it brings. The most notable instances of this type of suffering are Echo and Narcissus transformations; Echo withers away until she is naught but a voice, and Narcissus is trapped in place until he eventually transforms into a flower. Upon finishing this tale, the reader is left with much to consider, including the question: which fate is worse? Of course, both fates are certainly cruel, but they given the specific themes and diction that Ovid uses when describing each pseudo death, Echo s punishment seems far less dehumanizing than Narcisssus ; whereas Narcissus is completely objectified by his transformation into a beautiful flower, Echo at least maintains the power of voice. Given Ovid s diction during Echo s introduction, it is clear that her fate is directly tied to the power of speech and voice. Ovid calls her resounding Echo as if this is her title, and the use of the word resounding is very important (line 26). Why not call her loud or huge or any of the other synonyms tied to the word resounding ? One can only assume that Ovid wanted to make use of the word s other definition: resonant and reverberant. By essentially introducing her as Reverberant Echo and mentioning that her speech was strange , Ovid immediately alerts the reader to what is both Echo s downfall and her saving grace: Words have power. Echo over uses words in her favor when she d talk and talk,/ to give her sister nymphs just enough/ time to slip away before they were found out, by Juno (lines 38 40), and eventually, her speech turns on her when she is able to do little more than repeat Narcissus words back to him despite how much she wishes to sing his praises. In the end, however, Echo s final punishment is to become no more than a voice, no more than a literal echo. Surely, this fate is cruel, but perhaps it is not completely unforgiving; though it is very little consolation, Echo at least maintains the power of voice, and however diluted this power might be, Ovid writes, ... • 32. The Memoir of Old Elizabeth Essays The memoir of Old Elizabeth presents a rare and important slave narrative in which the stories of African American women intersect with the experiences of African American people in roles of religious leadership. Elizabeth broke many of societies conventions at the time by preaching and holding religious meeting despite being woman. Her religious work was met with backlash from the church and from many other people who did not accept the idea of a woman leading religious services, yet she continued to practice until her health would no longer allow for it. This is unusual as it spends most of the narrative on the time after she was free rather than focusing on the time that she was enslaved the way that many slave narratives do. Though ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The influences of the religious teaching that she received from her parents in her early childhood shaped the lifestyle, which she led up until her death. Elizabeth describes her father reading to her on the Sabbath day and remarks that she Felt the overshadowing of the lords spirit . At one point in her life, when she was around twelve she became so ill that she assumed she would die, and during this time vividly hallucinated that Jesus came to her. This sparked her to become even more religious than she had been in the past, and prompted her to continue a lifestyle of prayer and intense religious devotion despite living in a place where most people did not pray, and where she was often mocked for the amount of prayer that she preformed. This influence of religion in her early life proves that there were some serious discrepancies in how religion was viewed from plantation to plantation. Elizabeth s early childhood was filled with religion, mainly thanks to the teaching of her parents, and on that particular plantation it was not considered odd, yet on the next plantation that Elizabeth lived on there was no religion and she was openly mocked for being religious. As Elizabeth got older her sense of religious fervor did not fade, and she continued to practice as a Christian. Not only is the rocket going to fly higher but also have to test to see if there is a way to thoroughly protect an egg after landing to keep it from cracking/breaking. Research on the average height a rocket flies based on the PSI used showed that the higher the PSI the higher it tends to fly. Experimental Design The experimental question is Will the amount of air pressure change the height the rocket flies?. The independent variable is the amount of pressure in the rocket. The dependent variable is how high the rocket flies. The control is a bottle with just air no water launched at 60psi. Hypothesis If the air pressure is raised higher than the other experimental group s air pressure then the rocket will fly higher because of the increased force pushing off the water to make it fly higher. It also encourages international capital flows which can profit the welfare of a country. Especially in case of developing countries these capital flows can be very large. One big Problem of the exchange rate regimes is the loss of monetary and fiscal possibilities to stabilize the economy as well as Limitation of the ability to pursue domestic goals. There is a slight difference between a hard peg and a fixed exchange rate, since the fix exchange rate can be with several countries whereas the hard peg only pegs it currency to one foreign country. They have more or less the same ad and disadvantages, but with a fixed exchange rate, which is pegged to more than one country, the pursuit of domestic goals is easier, since the country does not depend on one foreign economy. One major weakness of the fixed exchange rate is, that when devaluation becomes necessary through fundamental changes in economy. Even the announcement of devaluation creates the danger of a crisis and eventually ends in a crisis, like the case of Argentina shows.
