Qualitative Design Paper
14
The vital methodological approach for this study is on qualitative intrinsic case study research. It is
imperative to note that even though all parts of the research design are connected, the connections are
not inflexible. The rubber band analogy, as put forward by Maxwell, tries to expound vividly a
qualitative design as something that is considerably flexible but there are constraints caused by
different parts one onto another. If these constrains are in anyway compromised, they may result in the
design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6).
The qualitative research serves to comprehend and explain on what a participant means (Morrow,
2005). In a more elaborate manner, Creswell (1998) defines qualitative research to be an analytical ...

There are four major reasons for using interviewing as the primary data source for this study. First is
that in order to study people?s perception of the meaning in their lived world, it would be appropriate
to use qualitative (Kvale, 1996, p. 105). Secondly, interviewing plays a critical role in finding out what
is going on another individual?s mind. Patton goes on to explain that interviewing someone aids in
finding out words from their mouths that cannot be (Patton, 2002). Thirdly, Merriam (2002)
acknowledges that qualitative interviews culminate in thick descriptions of the subject matter, which
enables readers to make decisions about transferability of study results. Conclusively, credibility of the
findings is increased as a result of the triangulation of information obtained from other (Merriam,
2002; Stake, 1995). Interviewing previous Upward Bound ELL students will allow information to be
identified and retrieved from key informants. These are people who are arguably knowledgeable and
whose insights can be of great importance in helping an observer to comprehend on how and why
events have occurred (Patton,

In Defence of Marx s Account of the Nature of Capitalist Exploitation
ABSTRACT: According to Marx, at any given epoch of a given society, [there is] a quantity of
necessaries [recognized as] the necessaries of life habitually required by the average worker. The
variations in the type and amount of goods recognized as necessary for life between different epochs
and different societies is due to the different physical conditions and to the different degrees of
civilization and comfort prevalent. In advanced capitalist societies, the necessities of life include a
heated dwelling, food, clothing, and access to some means of transportation, be it public or private.
However, the average laborer in advanced capitalist societies has ... Show more content on

But the average laborer in advanced capitalist society has access not only to the necessaries of life but
to a variety of luxury items as well. For example, the average worker has access to at least some
subset of the following luxury items: fine food and drink; an automobile; a television set; a hi fi set.
In this paper, I will (I) explain Marx s theory of the nature of capitalist exploitation; and (II) indicate
how the phenomenon described in the previous paragraph may be interpreted as evidence against
Marx s theory, and sketch an interpretation of this phenomenon according to which it is consistent
with Marx s theory. My interpretation will suggest that the average worker s access to luxury items
can be explained by the necessity in capitalism of reproducing the working class.
(I) In some of his early works, Marx suggests that the poverty of the workers goes hand in hand with
capitalist production. For example, in Alienated Labor he claims that in capitalist society, labor
produces marvels for the wealthy but it produces deprivation for the worker (61). Indeed, so much
does the realization of labor appear as diminution [of the worker] that the worker is diminished to the
point of starvation (61).
This view, that as a necessary result of the capitalist mode of production the average

Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City
Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of
people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the
scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the
new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly,
serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the
entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is.
Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden
personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is
similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the
feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while
working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing
the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more
demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings.
The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful,
like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image
in the reader s head

Rites Of Passage In The Medicine Bag
There are different rites of passage for Native American tribes. In the apache tribe, the girl has to go
through many more challenges during her ceremony in becoming a true woman in her tribe. In the
Medicine Bag, Martin unexpectedly received his rite of passage by receiving a medicine bag. They
both faced many diverse challenges. The rite of passage in each tribe is different with age, gender, etc.
In the apache tribe and lakota tribe, both the young adults have to go through a certain ritual to
become an adult in their tribe. They also have some challenges and obstacles to go through, involving
physical and emotional. In the story The Medicine Bag , Martin receives a medicine bag before his
grandfather passes away. After his grandfather passed away, Martin follows his grandfather s
instructions to carry on the medicine bag. Martin had only one day to prepare to receive the medicine
bag, and it was very tough for him because he knew his grandfather would soon pass away. The

Egypt Supreme Trial Essay
After death, an Ancient Egyptian s Akh, or complete soul, goes through many tests to prove it
deserves a final resting place in the afterlife. The ultimate trial is the judgement of the heart. It s
verdict determined your existence and whether or not you made it into the peaceful afterlife. This
common belief for Ancient polytheists in Egypt played a huge role in the decisions they made, as a
heart proved heavy in the final judgement would limit your existence furthermore. While a heart that
was found to be light and pure with good deeds would be granted an eternal afterlife. Many gods,
goddesses, and tools were involved with this process, each playing a different and crucial part for this
supreme trial.
The weighing of the heart was a well known belief in Ancient Egypt. Taking place in the hall of Ma at,
the Egyptian soul, also known as the Akh, had it s heart weighed against the feather of truth. If their
heart proved to be lighter than the feather, then it showed a life of worthiness and great deeds.
However, if the heart was found to be heavy with guilt and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

waited to devour the person s existence with ease. As the weighing went on, Thoth was ready to
record the results of the trial. His baboon sat on top of the golden scale to give the scale support. If the
heart was found to be heavier than the feather with guilt, greed, and evildoing, then it was devoured by
Ammut, and the Akh would no longer exist. In contrast, if the heart was lighter or equal to the feather
of Ma at from being pure and doing a life of admirable deeds, Horus would then lead the Akh down
the hallway to his father, Osiris , throne. There, Ma at stood beside him, ready to watch as Osiris
granted the Akh into the field of Hetep and Irau, thus allowing the Akh an eternal afterlife of peace

What Are The Social Qualities Of The 1920 s Flappers
The book Flapper by Joshua Zeitz is a book on the modern woman and the correlation to the 1920 s
flapper. It talked about the political, social, and economic qualities of the 1920 s that created the
modern woman and the infamous 1920 s flapper. The government and its president were mentioned
especially when it came to making war look good through the new form of advertisement. The
movies, books, stars, and style were by far the most popular subject of the book. The one percenters
and the women who wore knock off Chanel and plastic gold were both described in great detail. In
Flapper the political, economic, and social qualities of the 1920 s proved that the the infamous flapper

One already knows that Zelda was the first flapper, but believe me after her there were many more.
Lipstick was a cover name for a famous 1920 s newspaper columnist, who wrote about her weekly
adventures about New York as a flapper. She drank, slept with various men, smoked, wore dresses that
didn t cover her knees, and she was sexy, rebellious, modern, graceful, honest, funny, and every
teenage girls dream. Lipstick lived a life that so many women of the 1920 s wanted to be. Then there
was the movie stars. Clara, Colleen, and Brooks were the flappers on the screen. Surprisingly only one
of these girls actually embodied the flapper lifestyle off the screen. Brooks was this single actress. She
slept with various actors, directors, and partied late. She drank and smoked. Brooks was actually from
Kansas but literally ripped the Kansas out of her and built up a New York flapper instead. She hated
Hollywood and never wanted to act but life took her that way. Clara however, loved to act and was
just about the luckiest girl in the world. She won a contest that she probably shouldn t have won
because of her poverty stricken life and horrible luck. However, she won and it brought her fame and
fortune. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. She smiled and said hello to everyone. Clara was
the girl next door in Hollywood and the crowd loved it. Colleen is the daughter with connections. She
got in by her uncle and once this Daddy, what is beer? act wore off, she hit the bar and cut her hair and
became the irish flapper. She was the one that mother s would use to say it was ok to by their
daughters dresses and let them live in the footsteps of flapperdom. Colleen was a proper wife and only

the first modern women. The way they acted, talked, dressed, and were viewed was everything to

Age Discrimination Essay 9
Stereotypes about older people are a bound in our culture, but employers are not allowed to indulge in
them when making workplace decisions. Manifestations of age discrimination can be subtle or blatant.
Typical actions might include refusing to hire or promote older workers, curtailing their employee
benefits, limiting their training opportunities or limiting their job responsibilities and duties. Older
workers may be targeted in reductions of the work force; they may be encouraged to retire. Exit
incentive programs may deny valuable additional benefits to an older worker and early retirement
incentives may pressure older workers to retire prematurely. Incentive benefits may be reduced for
people who continue working beyond normal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The elimination of mandatory retirement is one of AARP s legislative priorities. Another priority for
them is to make sure that workers do not have to waive their rights to sue in exchange for an offer of
early retirement benefits. They want to make sure that older workers pension benefits are treated the
same as others.
As employers and as workers, it is important for all of us to be aware of the subtle way in which age
biased prejudices can influence our thinking. These stereotypical thoughts and actions reduce both the
incomes and the self confidence of millions of workers. An individual s ability, not their age, should
determine their qualifications for getting and keeping a job.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a US federal agency empowered by
Congress, particularly since the passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, to help enforce laws
prohibiting discrimination in the workplace. The Commission was first established in the early 1960s,
but it was not until 1964 that the EEOC was given the congressional power it needed to pursue those
companies with discriminatory practices, through lawsuits. The Civil Rights Act, in Title VII of its law
specifically gives the Commission the rights to oversee the employment practices of both private and
government employers, and to enforce the administration of laws set

Abdominal Pain Research Paper
The possible causes of abdominal pain are multiple. It is important to differentiate because some
causes can quickly become life threatening. Yet not only are there many, many causes of abdominal
pain in the abdomen; in addition, there are abdominal problems that cause referred pain elsewhere in
the body (commonly colic; and blood or infection irritating the diaphragm commonly causes shoulder
pain), and there are problems elsewhere in the body that cause pain in the abdomen. While a 20 year
old man is more likely to have an acute condition (such as infection) causing abdominal pain and a 50
year old man is more likely to have a chronic condition (such as IBD) causing his abdominal pain, we

Peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum) can result from many causes, but itself causes the influx
of fluid into the peritoneum, resulting in severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, leading to
respiratory distress, kidney failure, liver failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and death
within days of onset. Laboratory and imaging tests are often not helpful, so can be done last, to make
the final differential diagnosis from the limited set of possibilities we are able to determine after a
complete history and physical. Normal lab results can occur even with significant disease, and
abnormal lab results can occur even with mild disease and may not be specific enough to be
diagnostic. An exception would be serum lipase, which would indicate acute pancreatitis. CT scans are
usually the most useful when there is significant abdominal pain, but in emergency cases, the patient
should probably proceed to surgery rather than wait for imaging results. The high number of diagnoses
to be ruled out in a patient presenting with abdominal pain make them impossible to cover in a short

diagnoses based on the location of the pain, a copy of which could be printed out and kept on hand as

Rain By George Orwell Use Of Language
In any written text, a writer s discerning selection of word choice, vocabulary, punctuation and
imaginative techniques sets some common grounds for the reader to base his understanding upon. A
writer s linguistic techniques impart a significant measure of the text s content, as it helps him
establish the atmosphere, setting and tone. Furthermore, a writer s linguistic choices reveal much
about his identity and background, which helps the reader perceive the gist of the text. Meanwhile, a
picture is worth a thousand words. A visual text can also successfully engage the viewer into the
ambience of the text. In Text A, George Orwell employs language as a useful mechanism for
communication. George Orwell uses a lot of descriptive language, which adds to the substance of the
text and gives a more detailed account on the events of the story. For instance, this is displayed when
the writer says, In January there came a bitterly hard weather . (Line 1) In addition, the writer also
makes extensive use of similes, which makes the text a more compelling one and allows the writer to
seize the attention of the reader. As a case in point, Orwell states, The earth ... Show more content on

The Civil Service And Performance System
According to Thomson (2006), considerations of performance and merit are important in the civil
service (496). The contemporary civil service cultivated an ethic of civil service pursuant where the
servants were expected to act by their subjective responsibilities (Thompson, 2006, 498). In
Thompson s (2006) view, deinstitutionalization is happening in the civil service institution (500).
Thompson (2006) speaks of civil service reforms about performance and merit. In his argument, the
discussions of the civil service reforms have been dominated by managerial rhetoric (Thompson,
2006, 501). Additionally, he argues that in the current system, performance and merit are not
considered keenly as high performers are compensated the same way as poor performers (Thompson,
2006, 496). To provide a solution to this problem, systems have been proposed to reward performers
and to promote good governance in the public sector.
Thompson (2006) argues that the performance system should work in line with the merit ideals (496).
However, the performance system that has been put in place has created a noticeable bias against
disregarding hierarchical authority in ways that undermine merit ideals. The pay for performance
system gives the supervisors greater ability to influence the amount of the annual pay increases their
juniors receive (Thompson, 2006, 498). Therefore, Thompson (2006) suggests that in civil service,
merit and performance are related. However, in the current system, the

Persuasive Essay On Birth Control
Birth control is medically necessary, but whether women should have to pay for it out of pocket is an
issue which has not yet been settled. The cost for anyone seeking to buy birth control without
insurance ranges anywhere between twenty five to eight hundred dollars. Despite the fact that it can be
used to treat a myriad of disorders, from ovarian cysts to endometriosis, and can be used to prevent
certain cancers, many employers seek to deny coverage to women because they assert that it infringed
upon their religious beliefs. Other members of the opposition claim that pregnancy is a natural
consequence of sex and that taxpayers should not have to pay for birth control. However, these claims
are irresponsible and not based in fact or logic. Birth control is necessary to many women throughout
the United States, and as such should be covered by insurance.
Birth Control Should Be Covered By Insurance
Birth control is utilized by a large portion of sexually active women in the United States (Planned
Parenthood). Its benefits are innumerable. The uses of birth control spread through a wide variety of
domains, from the prevention of diseases, to the treatment of disorders ranging from anemia to
endometriosis. It can be used in conjunction with condoms in order to assure effectiveness and, as a
whole, allows women to take control of certain aspects of their futures. Birth control is a fundamental
aspect of many women s lives and yet it remains a point of

Genocide And Crimes Against Humanity Essay
It is my belief that genocide and crimes against humanity are two very distinct concepts. At the end of
World War II they became part of international law. They were two totally new concepts and are
relatively recent in terms of legislation. To put it simply the main difference between crimes against
humanity and genocide are: Genocide basically focuses on not the killing of individuals but the
annihilation of masses, for example the destruction of a race or religious group made up of individuals
who share the same ethnicity or religion. Crimes against Humanity on the other hand Is the systematic
mass murder of a large amount of individuals which constitutes a crime against humanity. I will be

This conflict started out because the political elite blamed the Tutsi minority population for the
countries out of control social, economic and political pressures. The start of the mass murder began
when a plane carrying President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down, which then prompted an
immediate outbreak of violence. The Hutu extremists proceeded to then use the smokescreen of a war
to start executing Tutsi civilians. The Tutsi where basically seen as being insignificant as a group of
people, and where standing in the way of the the hutu s idealization of the perfect society. The
brutatlity of this genocide can be summed up by the fact that in Rwanda the chopping up of tutsi men
was referred too as bush clearing and the slaughter of thousands of women and children was labelled
as the pulling out the roots of the bad weeds (Prunier 1997: 142). In 1915 the second case study I will

government planning to expel and massacre aremians who lived in the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish

Analysis Of The Coco Mademoiselle
Unspoken Words Through an Ad: Chanel, Coco Mademoiselle and Tommy Hilfiger, TH Bold
Wherever one looks barraged by an advertisement or marketing ads. Whether you are appreciating a
day of shopping or heading to work, promotions encompass you. It appears we never get a break from
this production. In addition, we see them so much we have developed resistance to their nearness.
There are numerous approaches to publicize an item, and ordinarily the similarities are self evident.
Analyzing commercials intently uncovers that paying little respect to the likenesses and contrasts in
notices, the primary motivation behind a promotion is to engage a specific group of onlookers.
Although both ads are selling fragrances, one is promoting a product for men and other is a promotion
for women. Chane is Coco Mademoiselle promotes sexyness and being sexually glamorous, while
Tommy s Hilfiger s Bold is advertising manliness and athleticism. The intention of each Ad is seen
through its color, model s persona, and through facial expressions.
In the Coco Mademoiselle ad, the colors are explicitly more feminine, as well as elegant
simultaneously; introducing colors of light pearl white on her elegant beady dress, whereas the
wallpaper is a taupe color. The color white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and
virginity and it is seen as the color of perfectionism. The color taupe is seen as a color of productivity
while the majority of the focus on this ad is the white

China also has the most ambitious expansion plans, with the most kilometers of lines currently under

with France and Turkey also notably having ambitious HSR expansion plans.
If it is assumed that expansion proceeds as planned, in the next few decades, China will have the

I. Executive Summary
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the stock price of Wal Mart Stores Inc. (which ticker symbol
in NYSE is WMT) by fundamental analysis. According to this analysis, I recommend that Wal Mart is
worth to invest in the long term because of the potential growth of market shares and revenue.
Besides, based on P/E method and Gordon model, WMT price is undervalued; therefore, if investors

Beta is the slope of the characteristic line. As shown in appendix1, we use the monthly historical data
from April 2003 to April 2008 to graph SCL. We use S P 500 as the market because it contains the
stocks of 500 Large Cap corporations and can reflect the market change broadly. As shown in exhibit
1, we can get the SCL: Ri Rf = 0.001 + 0.1649(Rm Rf). So the beta is 0.1649 and the alpha (intercept)
is 0.001. From the regression line, we find the R square is only 0.103. It reflects the degree that X
variable explains Y variable is 10.3%. That is, Ri Rf has no close relationship with Rm Rf. In addition,
due to the fact that beta is only 0.1649, it also provides the same result which Ri Rf and Rm Rf have
no strong positive relationship. It is a good issue to consider why Wal Mart stock return does not relate
with S P 500 return very well. From exhibit 2, we find the Wal Mart price did not change very much
while S P 500 price went up. The major reasons may be that S P 500 includes many high tech stocks
and those stocks performed very well during the period; therefore the volatility is greater than Wal
Mart. Moreover, maybe Wal Mart has lower weight in S P 500 so its trend of price change is different
from S P 500. From exhibit2, we also find Wal Mart had good relationship with S P 500 before 2004.

There are theories that say, knowledge of grammar is superfluous for a successful communication
because children are able to communicate without having any knowledge of grammar. Based on this
theory, grammatical knowledge is not required. However, if we as teachers do not emphasize grammar
knowledge as part of the English language dominates the whole process of learning, then it makes a
difficult learning process. Comparative understanding of grammar has led to different levels and
interest in teaching English. Have detailed knowledge of grammar does not mean that students have

Learning and teaching grammar includes not only a way to manipulate the presentation simple

The Role Of Ecological Validity Of A Research Study On Memory
This essay will be looking at the role of ecological validity and the importance it has in psychological
research. Ecological validity refers to the extent to which a study reflects naturally occurring or
everyday situations. It will also consider the advantages and disadvantages of ecological validity,
through exploring studies such as the bobo doll experiment and a study on memory. Ecological
validity is one of many important factor in psychological research. Also being addressed is what goes
into a study or experiment and all the things that need to be considered to achieve ecological validity.
In addition, it is important to design the study in such a way that the results obtained can be usefully
and meaningfully applied to the area in question. Constructing experiments that achieve high
ecological validity is quite a complex and difficult task. When conducting a study or experiment there
are lots of issues that researchers and psychologists need to consider. Making good decisions on
features like conditions can make all the difference between a poor research study and one that
contributes significantly to new knowledge. The more researchers try to control a study or experiment,
the less ecological validity it tends to have. Studies or experiments that have high ecological validity
allows psychologists to generalise the findings which shows how behaviour is affected in real life. A
negative drawback from a study with high ecological validity is that it is very hard to

Enlightenment By Immanuel Kant
In the Essay What is Enlightenment? writer Immanuel Kant expresses that it is often troublesome for
individuals to emerge out of adolescence. He says that individuals would frequently stay content in a
condition of immaturity. As indicated by him, guidelines and formulas tie individuals to a condition of
immaturity. A man, he says, who might set out to resist the standards and equations would just make a
little stride towards development since he is unaccustomed to this sort of free development. Just a
couple of individuals, as indicated by Kant, have prevailing with regards to rising out of immaturity.
He says that such individuals have done so by developing their minds. Kant characterizes
enlightenment as man s emergence from his self imposed immaturity (Kant, Enlightenment 1). One
should first comprehend what Kant implied by Enlightenment and Maturity . The essential qualifier
for enlightenment isn t finding reality, yet hunting down it. To accomplish this, man should essentially
practice his point of view without influence. In the written work Kant characterizes maturity as the
inability to use one s understanding without the guidance from another (Kant, Enlightenment 1).
Maturity more specifically means the lack of resolution and courage. Also, instead of taking your own
decisions, you rely on authority, parents, relatives and government. The writer believes that one doesn

The Birth Control Movement Essay example
The Progressive Era was a period of social and political reform beginning in the post Gilded Age 19th
century and lasting through WWI. Industrial and urban growth of early 19th century America while
representative of opportunity and future advancement simultaneously posed many difficulties for
working class citizens. Prior concerns over the conditions of working class citizens were multiplied
and magnified by overpopulated and impoverished urban communities. During this era many new
Progressive agendas were introduced with the goal of reforming dated and unregulated policies, the
most prominent of these, the birth control movement. The documents from chapter six of Constructing
the American Past show that at its core, the birth control ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In document three from The Case for Birth Control Sanger s rhetoric changes, relying on facts,
statistics, and knowledge based reasoning. Document three proves to be a much more reliable and
comprehensive argument than document one. Sanger advocates small families for the working class as
a means to eliminate poverty (due to large families), illegal abortions, child labor, and to protect the
health of women from overwork and the strain of too frequent child bearing (6, 3,124) The argument
shifts from a pseudo socialist agenda to simply the right of a woman to control her own body and
choose her own destiny. Following the release of The Woman Rebel, Anthony Comstock spearheaded
an anti birth control campaign with the aid of the Society for the Suppression of Vice, vice as
Comstock described it intemperance, gambling, and evil reading (6,1,122). Document 2 is an
interview with Comstock by Mary Alden Hopkins of Harper s Weekly on the issue of birth control and
the laws against its distribution and publication. Comstock approaches the birth control issue as a
religious zealot, arguing that it is the moral and spiritual obligation of the people to stray from vice
and practice abstinence as the only means of family planning. Comstock s conservative rhetoric
appealed to the Victorian era principles of self control and moral fortitude. Moreover, Comstock
employs the ideology of rule by fear, by

Analysis Of The Novel The Graveyard Book
The Graveyard Book (2008) by Neil Gaiman breaks down the borderline between the dead and living
world in his novel. Gaiman presents an irony in his novel by giving the caring nature to the dead
people of the graveyard. He presents the graveyard as a safe place for an innocence, rather than the
living world. Silas is a mysterious character throughout the novel and his existence is not stated very
clearly amongst the living and dead. However, there are some evidence in the novel, which unravels
the existence of Silas as an undead being, whose life is caught in between the border line of life and
death. Silas is a reformed version of a vampire, who is travelling through the darkness of life for the
search of light.

Furthermore, Silas never appears during the daylight or sunlight throughout the novel. Psi vampires
only relies on the energies of souls. The vampires rely on the processed life force and sun is an
unprocessed celestial energy (Ankhape, Vampirism Forum ). Sun is a symbol of light and rebirth, and
vampires are not categorized even in dead and livings. Hence, vampires dislike the bright rays of
sunlight. For example: he would be there waiting at sunset, just before Silas awakened (Gaiman 37).
This reveals that Silas do not like the sunlight and he always meet with Bod after or before the sunset.
His day begin after the sunset and ends before the sun rise. Likewise, when Silas awakes before the
time and want to meet Bod in the chapel, it is clearly stated that he does not like the remnants of light
(Gaiman 177). He was standing in the shadow of corner to protect himself from the daylight. This
shows that Silas is a vampire. Vampires are the undead beings, who never categorized in the living and
dead world and this is justified with the statement of Silas during the occasion of macabray dance. As
he said to Bod that you must be alive or you must be dead to dance and I am neither (Gaiman 149). It
is the first plot in the novel, when Silas actually put his existence in between the living and dead.
Therefore, the existence of Silas is stated unclearly as a reformed vampire, who is seeking the path of
light in his life.

Essay On Modern Day Veterans
Have you hugged a veteran today? What about yesterday? most likely the answer is no. Veterans are
important to our nations history and future, but we are not very good at recognizing this and following
through with our promises. A quote from John Kennedy states that As we express our gratitude, we
must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. We do not
realize the impact they have on our lives today. They protected our freedom, they remind us of how
deadly war really is, and most importantly they teach our future generations.
One of the fundamental reasons people go to war is for freedom. Where would we be without the

English Bill Of Rights Essay
Not to be confused with the American Bill of Rights, the English Bill of Rights was written in 1689.
What they really were was an act declaring the rights and liberties of the subject and settling the
succession of the crown. Like the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights is a basic and fundamental
document of the constitution law in England. The reason for the bill of rights was to ensure and
guarantee the safety of the human rights that the citizens were ought to have. The bill of rights reduced
the power the monarch had on the civilians, and gave the civilians more power towards the monarchs.
The English Bill of Rights came after the defeat of King James II and the crowning of William III and

The Bill of rights were intended not only to ensure basic human rights to the Englishmen, but to also

When I first walked into the theater, I could tell right away that the show was set in the future. The
intricate design all over the floor gave a very futuristic feel, as well as the appliances over where the
kitchen area was. One of the most impressive aspects of the set was the fact that the sink had running
water. Something that the show didn t necessarily need, but when you saw it you knew that the team
had gone above and beyond to make sure that the show was the best that it could be, and that didn t go
unnoticed. Everything on the set looked futuristic and new, that is, except for Majorie s chair at the
beginning of the show, it represented how Majorie stuck out in this new era, and how she longed for
things the way they were when she was young, and it brought great symbolism into the show. The
costumes, designed by Inda Blatch Geib, were a wonderful addition to the show as well. With this
play being set in the future, it would be very easy to go over the top with costumes and put each of the
characters in absurd clothing that is extreme. But instead of doing this, she kept the costume plot very
simple. She put each of them in clothes that fit their character and were very simple, which fit the

Gun Control In College
Gun Control
Gun control is a major topic in today s society and it is broken into many subcategories that all have
different arguments and views. A few examples are The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right
to own guns, more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths and more gun control leads to fewer
suicides in the United States. The gun control category I am focusing on in this essay is, should
teachers and students be able to carry firearms on a college campus. I chose this since I am currently
attending college and this could have an effect directly on me or ASU. The idea of teachers and staff
being able to carry firearms on a college campus has come up many times in the media recently due to
the rise in mass shootings. Many states are now looking at this problem and voting on it. This topic is
always heavily debated due to the many different sides and varying beliefs on gun control and safety.
The NRA (National Rifle Association) has a heavy influence on the united states and who should be
allowed gun and what legislation is passed. The gun control topic of firearms on a college campus has
become politicalized and is commonly drawn into political debates and has become a political tool for
winning elections. Some states have already voted and taken action on this new idea and have allowed
staff to carry guns on campuses and in cars parked and locked in secure parking lots. Another major
idea that is constantly brought up with campus carry and firearms on campuses

Agriculture in the Himalayas of Nepal
According to some estimates, as much as 90% of Nepal s population relies on agriculture for its
sustenance.[1] The significant climactic variations between Nepal s sub tropical Terai region, hills
region, and Himalayan mountain region lead to a variety of different agricultural models. Within the
northern Himalayan region, additional variations in agricultural style exist because of changes in the
qualities of available soil and quantities of moisture at different altitudes. Some researchers remark

As they rely heavily on their crops to sustain themselves, they tend to remain in areas where
agriculture can continue throughout the year.
In midland mountainous regions from 2,500 to 3,200 meters above sea level, sub Tibetan groups (or
groups of Tibetan ethnicity and culture) grow one crop of wheat or barley per winter and one crop of
buckwheat during the summer. The climate in this region is cool and dry, and the dry field agriculture
used requires less labor than rice cultivation. This allows them to raise cattle, water buffalo and goats
to supplement their diet.[4]At even higher altitudes, where low levels of moisture permit only a single
crop of wheat or barley, yak, which are well suited for high altitudes, become a major component of
the lifestyle.[5] In the northern areas of Nepal, Tibetan pastoralists travel to altitudes reaching up to
5,200 meters as they seek out pasture for their animals during the summer monsoon season, although
few permanent habitations can be found above 4,000 meters. Where possible, these groups make up
for shortages in grain and other goods by trading wool, butter, meat, and draught animals. They may
also hunt, fish, and forage for wild plants, although habitat destruction from deforestation has caused a
decline in the availability of game and fish resources in much of Nepal, making it increasingly
difficult to rely on these assets for food.[6]

African Minkisi and American Culture
I. Introduction
African Minkisi have been used for hundreds of years in West Central Africa, This area where they are
traditionally from was once known as the kingdom of Kongo, when Europeans started settling and
trading with the BaKongo people. Kongo was a well known state throughout much of the world by the
sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The BaKongo, however, had probably long used minkisi before
ethnographers and anthropologists ever recorded them. Minkisi are complex items that are used to

item used in Kongo culture, I have learned an enormous amount about the Kongo culture and the
BaKongo, and have come to a new level of awareness about material culture.
The goals of this paper have changed throughout the course of my research. At first, I didn t even
know what an nkisi was, let alone did I know where I wanted to go with this paper. After doing my
research though, I have decided against a paper completely focused on original ideas. Instead, my goal

minkisi than I could ever gain by just reading a few books. I will especially focus on the works of

Comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism
When it comes to comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism very few similarities exist. Although
both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each
religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In
Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However, there
is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This similarity is
the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in Buddhism and the
ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on the importance of
emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is mention of the idea
of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many aspects of Daoist
practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be filled. However, as it is
referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that gives it purpose.
Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in turn close it off to
any new understanding we our limiting our potential. One of the most important concepts in Daoism is
Wei Wu Wei, or, action without action. Like water bending and moving through a stream it is believed

The Bystander Effect In Chronicle Of A Death Foretold
The bystander effect, is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals

been subjected to prejudice and more. And the first way to diminish someone is through language, by
using words or labels to identify a person as less than, as the others not like us, and so forth. Once a
person has been identified this way, it makes

The Smallest Dragonboy Essay
Everyone knows that one cannot succeed at everything in life. But for one to not be good enough at a
major one has to try it out first. At some point everyone has tried a new hobby as for an example
dance and then been either told that one was not good enough or simply one found out by them selves.
Either way it is insulting and disappointing to be told that the way you are build is no good for the one
thing you love to do. But would we not be living in a boring world if everyone were the same? Our
difference defines us as an individual person our one person. Some of us are tall and some of us are
tiny. But no matter what should everyone be treated with respect even if they are different from others.
In the story The Smallest Dragonboy , written by Anne McCarrey the main character Keevan
experiences the difficulties with being told that he is never going to be good enough because of his
height. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two science fiction stories have that in common, that they are both build up upon bravery. This
is a common theme as the boy in The Smallest Dragonboy and the girl in The Cold Equation are both
extremely brave. The boy has to be brave to win over a dragon so that he can have a companion
through life and show people that his obstacles will not get in his way to win over the dragon Heth.
The girl in the other story has to be brave and save the planet from fuel. This will cost her life but will
save others. She willingly walks into the airlock and is ejected into space. Her main motivation for her
actions is her brother. Knowing that her death will save him at the colony Woden on the planet Mimir,
she willingly does it. His successful father motivates the boy in The Smallest Dragonboy , to keep
fighting so that he can become as successful. The stories has in common that someone they love
indirectly motivates their actions and power to do what they fear and are told they are to weak to

Bioliographic Information on Slavery and Colonial Rule in...
Bibliographic Information: Klein, Martin A., Slavery And Colonial Rule in French West Africa, 1998,
Cambridge University Press
The book bears importance in being one of the few studies about domestic slavery within the French
West Africa. It contributes to the field of study, by elaborating on the importance of slavery in
Senegal, Sudan and Guinea in Africa s development. The period of the study lies from 1876 to 1922,
wherein Klein ultimately shows the evolution of slavery. In the years prior to 1876, Klein argued that
slavery had an economic and social significance in societies. There are two themes which form a
major part of the book. They include: the conflict between the French in the metropole and the French
in Africa; and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the social taboo of being an ex slave (or of slave heritage), there are ex slaves who are afraid to
mention their backgrounds to Klein. This obviously leads to a limitation of evidence, which perhaps
makes it difficult for the reader to form an idea on what slavery was fully like. Despite this, Klein
shows admiration for those of slave backgrounds in portraying them as being spurred on by past
oppressions, to achieve a better life than those with master backgrounds. To further his arguments,
Klein uses secondary sources as a basis to criticize traditional arguments.
Apart from the deep historical analysis and the descriptive historical events (which aid in backing up
Klein s knowledge and deep research in the field), the book s structure is significant. In terms of
illustrations, Klein uses maps, figures and pictures. Maps are an essential part of the book in providing
vivid ideas on where battles occurred or which societies were based where. In this case, his writings
and the maps form a symbiotic relationship, in that the reader can understand the context through the
use of maps and his writing (clear up properly). Each chapter is structured in a way that allows the
reader to navigate around the chapter and read the relevant information. All chapters include an
introductory section (aimed at outlining the key points of the chapter in question) and a conclusion
(aimed at summarising and tying together the

Essay On Flashbulb Memory
In this first experiment, it seems to show a solid validity. Since ecological validity is defined as the
conclusions that are analyzed in the research study that can be generalized to certain settings and
situations for whatever is being studied where it would naturally occur. Since this was studying
random people on the street the ecological validity would be pretty high considering that you can
generalize the research findings of the study to a real life situations which this study demonstrates.
The generalizability of this experiment would be a bit low considering the information provided.
Generalizability is defined as an extensions of conclusions to a study based on a sample population to
a population at large. The larger the sample population in the experiment, the more generalized the
conclusions can be of the experiment. Since this experiment did not include how many participants it
is hard to define the true generalizability of this experiment. Although it can be determined based on
information from the class that the accuracy of these memory won t be as accurate as the participants
predict they are. Neisser s perspective on this research would be that you would need to take the
empirical generalizations first and foremost. If that provides solid evidence, then it shows ... Show

Another factor of why flashbulb memories are not accurate has to do with the media coverage of a
specific event such as a hurricane or 9/11. This alters how you remember the event versus how you
remember the event with the extra information that you seen on the news or heard via social media.
Since Puerto Rico and many other Caribbean islands did not have access to media for months after the
hurricane, this would protect the accuracy of these individual s flashbulb memories better than of a
memory of 911 where there was constant 24/7 news

Oral Habits | Thumb and Digit Sucking Thumbsucking and digit sucking (hereafter, thumbsucking) is
one of the most common oral habits found among infants and young children. Thumbsucking can be

Most infants grow out of this habit several months into postnatal life however, some 40 50% of
children, aged three to six years old continue the habit. Thumbsucking is not reason for immediate

The Counter Of The Pet Store
Do you know what kind of bird this is? I asked the woman behind the counter of the pet store. I had
managed to hitchhike to Halifax with a stranger. I had a hard time explaining what I was wearing, and
why I was wearing it in the middle of nowhere, but he seemed fine with my pathetic excuses. Could I
get a better look at it? I passed her the bird, It looks like a tufted titmouse. What kind of food does it
eat? I asked. How did you get this bird to follow you? I don t know. It was injured, so I nursed it back
to health. That s rather strange. You must have a hint of magic, eh? I flinched when she said magic ,
she had no idea. Yeah I guess. What does it eat though? I m going to take care of it so I need to feed it.
These little guys usually like sunflower seeds. Try aisle 4. Thank you. I said, holding out my hand for
Adrian to jump into. I walked to aisle 4, which was stocked with various brands of bird seed. Most of
them were blends of different kinds of seeds, but I managed to find a bag of plain sunflower seeds.
Adrian seemed rather happy about the prospect of food. I walked up to the register, made my
purchase, and headed outside. The snow was still falling outside, but the wind was blowing harshly. I
crossed the street to get some food for myself. My bus wasn t due to show up for about two hours, so I
decided to walk around for a bit. It was a little hard to see through the flurries, but I managed to

Epicurus Vs Lucretius
i. Death is something that is inevitably going to happen in everybody s lifetime. We see people get
older every day and as we know we don t live eternally. But should death be feared or is it harmful?
That is something that nobody can know without a doubt the answer to, but two philosophers,
Epicurus and Lucretius, have built their own arguments on the common assumption that death is the
total annihilation of the self. Therefore, if there is no life after death, we shouldn t fear death itself.
Epicurus creates his no harm argument on the fact that after we die we no longer exist. Lucretius takes
another approach where he makes a comparison using non existence before life. If we don t consider
this time period before we come to life to be bad ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are downfalls to Epicurus and Lucretius arguments that I think can make them debatable. It
cannot be proven that after death our souls are eradicated. For example, many religions believe in life
after death in some form whether it is in reincarnation or heaven. I understand that millions of people
around the world believe in this for a reason and would not blindly trust in an afterlife if they didn t
have a good enough reason to. In addition, there is no way to reach out to those who have already
passed away to know for sure. Therefore, it seems impossible to know with certainty that death is the
total annihilation of the self. This makes me doubt both philosopher s arguments because the claim
that our existence is cutoff after death is what both Epicurus and Lucretius build their arguments off
of. Another reason why I believe death is harmful is because it stops you from experiencing the things
that make you happy in life. Epicurus states that death cannot possibly cause us harm because we stop
existing in that moment. It is my belief though that by our existence coming to a halt that that itself
does cause us harm. You are no longer able to be with the ones you love or do the things that you love.
If we would have lived longer we would be able to experience more of the good things. We might not
feel physical pain or harm after death but that doesn t mean that we aren t missing out on the things
that are enjoyable in the

What My Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege
The Article The article What My Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege by J. Dowsett talks
about how there is a white privilege in today s world even if people want to deny it. He used the
analogy of bike riders being the minorities and automobile drivers being white. Most automobile
drives do not think about the bike riders, they are not men to them they just do not cross there mind
and because of that they might mistreat. There are also the automobile drivers that go out of their way
to be mean to the bike riders just because they are driving a car so they feel superior.
Traditional and Alternative Perspectives
Post Positivist
Post Positivist see issues from a perspective that knowledge is key. Post Positivist have to have a
strong base to start from. The example from class was that it is like a pyramid, in order to be able to
come to a conclusion or the top of the pyramid they must establish a strong base. This base is made
out of research. Reality is something that we can understand and capture probabilistically using the
right tools (Schriver, 2011:126). They believe that with the right about of research they can come to an
answer that fits best. Traditional interpreted. A traditional Post Positivist would see this article in the
manner that not much research was made when this article was made and that therefore it could not be
a sound article until there was more done to it. It is one mans view on how he sees privilege and even

Reflective Essay On Education
God, the Ruler and Creator of every finite and infinite existence in the universe, has called me to a life
of love, servitude, and fellowship with other Christians. However, at my age, my walk with Christ is
no longer conjoined with decisions made by my parents. The decision of college is entirely mine to
make with the benevolent and ever wise guidance of Christ. By no means is this an easy task, but one
ideal has been forthright in my heart my education must be Christ centered. My walk with faith began
at a young age, hailing from a humble farming community with multiple Baptist ministers and Sunday
School teachers in my immediate family. I accepted Christ at age six, but only more recently have I
focused on my faith and spiritual growth. As I reached high school and (briefly) considered more
liberal yet high standing colleges, I realized with increasing certainty that I was called to a higher
standard a Christ centered education. Several Christian colleges have reached out to me, but Union
remains my foremost favorite, in spite of the price tag. Union s core values have impressed me
boundlessly, with all aspects of learning between God, professor, student, university, and the
community, as well as the present and future being addressed. At Union, I am assured that I will be
pushed to the limits and establish new ones for excellence, not settle for good enough. Such drive
mirrors my current efforts in high school, not to mention excites me for a new challenge.

BACKGROUND PAPER
ON
AGENCY AND EVENTS
1. Ben Franklin, pointing to the sun carved on the back of the presiding officer s chair, remarked;
Throughout the days we have been laboring here, I have observed that sun, and wondered whether it
was a rising sun or a setting sun. Now I know it was a rising sun. 1 Throughout our lives we have been
told of how our country was formed. I am here to tell you about the things the history books and
teachers don t tell you about the freemasons and there shaping of the United States of America. We
will start with freemasons an agency that has been shaping history since the building of King Solomon
s temple.
2. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Benedict Arnold, and General Henry Hap

A position which made a mason use his three principles on a daily basis as they fought to free our
country. Even the Air Force can owe some of it heritage to a freemason. General Arnold the only five
star general to wear the Air Force uniform is known as the for father of today s Air Force. His
dedication to his fellow Airman through his defense of Billy Mitchell and his push for the design of
multiple airframes proved his dedication to better himself and his community, the US Air Force and
America.
4. Now you may see that the freemasons are a brotherhood of men with three main principles to guide
them: brotherly love, the tolerance and respect for man; relief, the support for all things small and
large; and truth, the highest of moral standards. You also now know the impact these great men have
had on shaping our country from the writing of the declaration of independence, to the revolutionary
war, and the creation of the Air Force. By understanding what freemasons are and what they have
done for our country I hope you will open your hearts and souls to your fellow man and further shape
our great nation as these great men have done for us.

The Problem Of Pet Adoptions
Different Species, Similar Pain
Many would agree there isn t anything cuter than a plump, furry kitty. But apparently potential pet
owners require a bit more tugging to put things in perspective as a recent advertisement by The Shelter
Pet Project suggests. By tugging, I m referring the to the heart strings of the audience. The ad features
a somewhat large, orange cat looking into a bathroom mirror. Nothing too peculiar about that image
right? Wrong. The text of the ad, Does this fur make me look fat? is within a cloud shaped thought
bubble followed by the claim There s nothing wrong with shelter pets. Joined with the uncertainty and
sadness of the cat s reflection; the ad depends heavily on the emotional connection these thoughts ...

After multiple experiences of rejection, people can sometimes be forced to wonder what they could
change to become more desirable. The sincere nature of the message resonates emphatically.
Though the ad has a clear message, there s most always a bigger picture. Pet seekers have more than a
few choices of shelters from which to choose a family companion. There are approximately 5,000
animal shelters nationwide. The advertisement has to also ensure that when someone decides to use an
animal shelter to adopt a pet; they solicit this shelters services as opposed to its numerous competitors.
Even with the positivity the organization represents, it is very much a business with precise
organizational goals. How do you attract potential pet owners to your particular organization? You
align yourself with credible brands to hopefully gain their trust.
Beneath the cat is a blue animal scratch like affect used to display the organizations web address
within. The logos of the Humane Society, Maddie s Fund and The Ad Campaign can be found to the
lower right. The Shelter Pet Project website being referenced is strategic in that it serves as a
directional aid to guide the consumer to the collaborative site rather than the individual sites of all
parties.
The small partner logos are best described as a testimony of the organizations integrity. For more than
60 years, The Humane Society of the United States has

  • 2. Qualitative Design Paper 14 The vital methodological approach for this study is on qualitative intrinsic case study research. It is imperative to note that even though all parts of the research design are connected, the connections are not inflexible. The rubber band analogy, as put forward by Maxwell, tries to expound vividly a qualitative design as something that is considerably flexible but there are constraints caused by different parts one onto another. If these constrains are in anyway compromised, they may result in the design being ineffective (Maxwell, 2005, p.6). The qualitative research serves to comprehend and explain on what a participant means (Morrow, 2005). In a more elaborate manner, Creswell (1998) defines qualitative research to be an analytical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are four major reasons for using interviewing as the primary data source for this study. First is that in order to study people?s perception of the meaning in their lived world, it would be appropriate to use qualitative (Kvale, 1996, p. 105). Secondly, interviewing plays a critical role in finding out what is going on another individual?s mind. Patton goes on to explain that interviewing someone aids in finding out words from their mouths that cannot be (Patton, 2002). Thirdly, Merriam (2002) acknowledges that qualitative interviews culminate in thick descriptions of the subject matter, which enables readers to make decisions about transferability of study results. Conclusively, credibility of the findings is increased as a result of the triangulation of information obtained from other (Merriam, 2002; Stake, 1995). Interviewing previous Upward Bound ELL students will allow information to be identified and retrieved from key informants. These are people who are arguably knowledgeable and whose insights can be of great importance in helping an observer to comprehend on how and why events have occurred (Patton, ... In Defence of Marx s Account of the Nature of Capitalist Exploitation ABSTRACT: According to Marx, at any given epoch of a given society, [there is] a quantity of necessaries [recognized as] the necessaries of life habitually required by the average worker. The variations in the type and amount of goods recognized as necessary for life between different epochs and different societies is due to the different physical conditions and to the different degrees of civilization and comfort prevalent. In advanced capitalist societies, the necessities of life include a heated dwelling, food, clothing, and access to some means of transportation, be it public or private. However, the average laborer in advanced capitalist societies has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the average laborer in advanced capitalist society has access not only to the necessaries of life but to a variety of luxury items as well. For example, the average worker has access to at least some subset of the following luxury items: fine food and drink; an automobile; a television set; a hi fi set. In this paper, I will (I) explain Marx s theory of the nature of capitalist exploitation; and (II) indicate how the phenomenon described in the previous paragraph may be interpreted as evidence against Marx s theory, and sketch an interpretation of this phenomenon according to which it is consistent with Marx s theory. My interpretation will suggest that the average worker s access to luxury items can be explained by the necessity in capitalism of reproducing the working class. (I) In some of his early works, Marx suggests that the poverty of the workers goes hand in hand with capitalist production. For example, in Alienated Labor he claims that in capitalist society, labor produces marvels for the wealthy but it produces deprivation for the worker (61). Indeed, so much does the realization of labor appear as diminution [of the worker] that the worker is diminished to the point of starvation (61). This view, that as a necessary result of the capitalist mode of production the average ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly, serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is. Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings. The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful, like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image in the reader s head ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The ultimate trial is the judgement of the heart. It s verdict determined your existence and whether or not you made it into the peaceful afterlife. This common belief for Ancient polytheists in Egypt played a huge role in the decisions they made, as a heart proved heavy in the final judgement would limit your existence furthermore. While a heart that was found to be light and pure with good deeds would be granted an eternal afterlife. Many gods, goddesses, and tools were involved with this process, each playing a different and crucial part for this supreme trial. The weighing of the heart was a well known belief in Ancient Egypt. Taking place in the hall of Ma at, the Egyptian soul, also known as the Akh, had it s heart weighed against the feather of truth. Lipstick lived a life that so many women of the 1920 s wanted to be. Then there was the movie stars. Clara, Colleen, and Brooks were the flappers on the screen. Surprisingly only one of these girls actually embodied the flapper lifestyle off the screen. Brooks was this single actress. She slept with various actors, directors, and partied late. She drank and smoked. Brooks was actually from Kansas but literally ripped the Kansas out of her and built up a New York flapper instead. She hated Hollywood and never wanted to act but life took her that way. Clara however, loved to act and was just about the luckiest girl in the world. She won a contest that she probably shouldn t have won because of her poverty stricken life and horrible luck. However, she won and it brought her fame and fortune. Everyone loved her and she loved everyone. She smiled and said hello to everyone. Clara was the girl next door in Hollywood and the crowd loved it. Colleen is the daughter with connections. • 8. Age Discrimination Essay 9 Stereotypes about older people are a bound in our culture, but employers are not allowed to indulge in them when making workplace decisions. Manifestations of age discrimination can be subtle or blatant. Typical actions might include refusing to hire or promote older workers, curtailing their employee benefits, limiting their training opportunities or limiting their job responsibilities and duties. Older workers may be targeted in reductions of the work force; they may be encouraged to retire. The elimination of mandatory retirement is one of AARP s legislative priorities. Another priority for them is to make sure that workers do not have to waive their rights to sue in exchange for an offer of early retirement benefits. They want to make sure that older workers pension benefits are treated the same as others. As employers and as workers, it is important for all of us to be aware of the subtle way in which age biased prejudices can influence our thinking. These stereotypical thoughts and actions reduce both the incomes and the self confidence of millions of workers. An individual s ability, not their age, should determine their qualifications for getting and keeping a job. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a US federal agency empowered by Congress, particularly since the passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, to help enforce laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace. The Commission was first established in the early 1960s, but it was not until 1964 that the EEOC was given the congressional power it needed to pursue those companies with discriminatory practices, through lawsuits. • 10. Rain By George Orwell Use Of Language In any written text, a writer s discerning selection of word choice, vocabulary, punctuation and imaginative techniques sets some common grounds for the reader to base his understanding upon. A writer s linguistic techniques impart a significant measure of the text s content, as it helps him establish the atmosphere, setting and tone. Furthermore, a writer s linguistic choices reveal much about his identity and background, which helps the reader perceive the gist of the text. Meanwhile, a picture is worth a thousand words. A visual text can also successfully engage the viewer into the ambience of the text. In Text A, George Orwell employs language as a useful mechanism for communication. George Orwell uses a lot of descriptive language, which adds to the substance of the text and gives a more detailed account on the events of the story. For instance, this is displayed when the writer says, In January there came a bitterly hard weather . • 11. The Civil Service And Performance System According to Thomson (2006), considerations of performance and merit are important in the civil service (496). The contemporary civil service cultivated an ethic of civil service pursuant where the servants were expected to act by their subjective responsibilities (Thompson, 2006, 498). In Thompson s (2006) view, deinstitutionalization is happening in the civil service institution (500). Thompson (2006) speaks of civil service reforms about performance and merit. In his argument, the discussions of the civil service reforms have been dominated by managerial rhetoric (Thompson, 2006, 501). Additionally, he argues that in the current system, performance and merit are not considered keenly as high performers are compensated the same way as poor performers (Thompson, 2006, 496). To provide a solution to this problem, systems have been proposed to reward performers and to promote good governance in the public sector. Thompson (2006) argues that the performance system should work in line with the merit ideals (496). However, the performance system that has been put in place has created a noticeable bias against disregarding hierarchical authority in ways that undermine merit ideals. The pay for performance system gives the supervisors greater ability to influence the amount of the annual pay increases their juniors receive (Thompson, 2006, 498). Therefore, Thompson (2006) suggests that in civil service, merit and performance are related. However, in the current system, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cost for anyone seeking to buy birth control without insurance ranges anywhere between twenty five to eight hundred dollars. Despite the fact that it can be used to treat a myriad of disorders, from ovarian cysts to endometriosis, and can be used to prevent certain cancers, many employers seek to deny coverage to women because they assert that it infringed upon their religious beliefs. Other members of the opposition claim that pregnancy is a natural consequence of sex and that taxpayers should not have to pay for birth control. However, these claims are irresponsible and not based in fact or logic. Birth control is necessary to many women throughout the United States, and as such should be covered by insurance. Birth Control Should Be Covered By Insurance Birth control is utilized by a large portion of sexually active women in the United States (Planned Parenthood). Its benefits are innumerable. The uses of birth control spread through a wide variety of domains, from the prevention of diseases, to the treatment of disorders ranging from anemia to endometriosis. At the end of World War II they became part of international law. They were two totally new concepts and are relatively recent in terms of legislation. To put it simply the main difference between crimes against humanity and genocide are: Genocide basically focuses on not the killing of individuals but the annihilation of masses, for example the destruction of a race or religious group made up of individuals who share the same ethnicity or religion. Crimes against Humanity on the other hand Is the systematic mass murder of a large amount of individuals which constitutes a crime against humanity. This conflict started out because the political elite blamed the Tutsi minority population for the countries out of control social, economic and political pressures. The start of the mass murder began when a plane carrying President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down, which then prompted an immediate outbreak of violence. The Hutu extremists proceeded to then use the smokescreen of a war to start executing Tutsi civilians. The Tutsi where basically seen as being insignificant as a group of people, and where standing in the way of the the hutu s idealization of the perfect society. The brutatlity of this genocide can be summed up by the fact that in Rwanda the chopping up of tutsi men was referred too as bush clearing and the slaughter of thousands of women and children was labelled as the pulling out the roots of the bad weeds (Prunier 1997: 142). In 1915 the second case study I will be using as a comparison was the Aremenian genocide which consisted of the leaders of the Turkish government planning to expel and massacre aremians who lived in the Ottoman Empire. In addition, we see them so much we have developed resistance to their nearness. There are numerous approaches to publicize an item, and ordinarily the similarities are self evident. Analyzing commercials intently uncovers that paying little respect to the likenesses and contrasts in notices, the primary motivation behind a promotion is to engage a specific group of onlookers. Although both ads are selling fragrances, one is promoting a product for men and other is a promotion for women. Chane is Coco Mademoiselle promotes sexyness and being sexually glamorous, while Tommy s Hilfiger s Bold is advertising manliness and athleticism. The intention of each Ad is seen through its color, model s persona, and through facial expressions. (which ticker symbol in NYSE is WMT) by fundamental analysis. According to this analysis, I recommend that Wal Mart is worth to invest in the long term because of the potential growth of market shares and revenue. Besides, based on P/E method and Gordon model, WMT price is undervalued; therefore, if investors buy the stock, they will get benefit not only in capital gain but also in dividend cash inflow. II. As shown in appendix1, we use the monthly historical data from April 2003 to April 2008 to graph SCL. We use S P 500 as the market because it contains the stocks of 500 Large Cap corporations and can reflect the market change broadly. As shown in exhibit 1, we can get the SCL: Ri Rf = 0.001 + 0.1649(Rm Rf). So the beta is 0.1649 and the alpha (intercept) is 0.001. From the regression line, we find the R square is only 0.103. It reflects the degree that X variable explains Y variable is 10.3%. That is, Ri Rf has no close relationship with Rm Rf. In addition, due to the fact that beta is only 0.1649, it also provides the same result which Ri Rf and Rm Rf have no strong positive relationship. It is a good issue to consider why Wal Mart stock return does not relate with S P 500 return very well. From exhibit 2, we find the Wal Mart price did not change very much while S P 500 price went up. The major reasons may be that S P 500 includes many high tech stocks and those stocks performed very well during the period; therefore the volatility is greater than Wal Mart. Moreover, maybe Wal Mart has lower weight in S P 500 so its trend of price change is different from S P 500. From exhibit2, we also find Wal Mart had good relationship with S P 500 before 2004. When conducting a study or experiment there are lots of issues that researchers and psychologists need to consider. Making good decisions on features like conditions can make all the difference between a poor research study and one that contributes significantly to new knowledge. The more researchers try to control a study or experiment, the less ecological validity it tends to have. By applying the things I have learned in the readings from our class, I have learned a lot more about minkisi than I could ever gain by just reading a few books. I will especially focus on the works of Deetz, Vlach, and the authors about folk objects. I will also focus on what we talked about in class about usable truth when referring to objects associated with slave resistance. The first conclusion I have come to during the course of my research, is that I don t know how anybody could reduce African religion to being anything less than complicated. • 34. Comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism When it comes to comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism very few similarities exist. Although both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However, there is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This similarity is the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in Buddhism and the ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on the importance of emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is mention of the idea of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many aspects of Daoist practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be filled. However, as it is referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that gives it purpose. Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in turn close it off to any new understanding we our limiting our potential. One of the most important concepts in Daoism is Wei Wu Wei, or, action without action. In Chronicles of a Death Foretold, even though the townspeople do not desire the murder of Santiago Nasar, their unwillingness or lack of courage to take action in preventing this foretold murder consequently allows for the murder to happen. Bibliographic Information: Klein, Martin A., Slavery And Colonial Rule in French West Africa, 1998, Cambridge University Press The book bears importance in being one of the few studies about domestic slavery within the French West Africa. It contributes to the field of study, by elaborating on the importance of slavery in Senegal, Sudan and Guinea in Africa s development. The period of the study lies from 1876 to 1922, wherein Klein ultimately shows the evolution of slavery. In the years prior to 1876, Klein argued that slavery had an economic and social significance in societies. There are two themes which form a major part of the book. Due to the social taboo of being an ex slave (or of slave heritage), there are ex slaves who are afraid to mention their backgrounds to Klein. This obviously leads to a limitation of evidence, which perhaps makes it difficult for the reader to form an idea on what slavery was fully like. Despite this, Klein shows admiration for those of slave backgrounds in portraying them as being spurred on by past oppressions, to achieve a better life than those with master backgrounds. To further his arguments, Klein uses secondary sources as a basis to criticize traditional arguments. Apart from the deep historical analysis and the descriptive historical events (which aid in backing up Klein s knowledge and deep research in the field), the book s structure is significant. In terms of illustrations, Klein uses maps, figures and pictures. Maps are an essential part of the book in providing vivid ideas on where battles occurred or which societies were based where. In this case, his writings and the maps form a symbiotic relationship, in that the reader can understand the context through the use of maps and his writing (clear up properly). Each chapter is structured in a way that allows the reader to navigate around the chapter and read the relevant information. • 40. Essay On Flashbulb Memory In this first experiment, it seems to show a solid validity. Since ecological validity is defined as the conclusions that are analyzed in the research study that can be generalized to certain settings and situations for whatever is being studied where it would naturally occur. Since this was studying random people on the street the ecological validity would be pretty high considering that you can generalize the research findings of the study to a real life situations which this study demonstrates. The generalizability of this experiment would be a bit low considering the information provided. Generalizability is defined as an extensions of conclusions to a study based on a sample population to a population at large. The larger the sample population in the experiment, the more generalized the conclusions can be of the experiment. Since this experiment did not include how many participants it is hard to define the true generalizability of this experiment. • 43. Epicurus Vs Lucretius i. Death is something that is inevitably going to happen in everybody s lifetime. We see people get older every day and as we know we don t live eternally. But should death be feared or is it harmful? That is something that nobody can know without a doubt the answer to, but two philosophers, Epicurus and Lucretius, have built their own arguments on the common assumption that death is the total annihilation of the self. Therefore, if there is no life after death, we shouldn t fear death itself. Epicurus creates his no harm argument on the fact that after we die we no longer exist. Lucretius takes another approach where he makes a comparison using non existence before life. If we don t consider this time period before we come to life to be bad ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are downfalls to Epicurus and Lucretius arguments that I think can make them debatable. It cannot be proven that after death our souls are eradicated. For example, many religions believe in life after death in some form whether it is in reincarnation or heaven. I understand that millions of people around the world believe in this for a reason and would not blindly trust in an afterlife if they didn t have a good enough reason to. In addition, there is no way to reach out to those who have already passed away to know for sure. Therefore, it seems impossible to know with certainty that death is the total annihilation of the self. This makes me doubt both philosopher s arguments because the claim that our existence is cutoff after death is what both Epicurus and Lucretius build their arguments off of. Another reason why I believe death is harmful is because it stops you from experiencing the things that make you happy in life. Epicurus states that death cannot possibly cause us harm because we stop existing in that moment. It is my belief though that by our existence coming to a halt that that itself does cause us harm. You are no longer able to be with the ones you love or do the things that you love. If we would have lived longer we would be able to experience more of the good things. Most automobile drives do not think about the bike riders, they are not men to them they just do not cross there mind and because of that they might mistreat. There are also the automobile drivers that go out of their way to be mean to the bike riders just because they are driving a car so they feel superior. Reflective Essay On Education God, the Ruler and Creator of every finite and infinite existence in the universe, has called me to a life of love, servitude, and fellowship with other Christians. However, at my age, my walk with Christ is no longer conjoined with decisions made by my parents. The decision of college is entirely mine to make with the benevolent and ever wise guidance of Christ. By no means is this an easy task, but one ideal has been forthright in my heart my education must be Christ centered. My walk with faith began at a young age, hailing from a humble farming community with multiple Baptist ministers and Sunday School teachers in my immediate family. I accepted Christ at age six, but only more recently have I focused on my faith and spiritual growth. As I reached high school and (briefly) considered more liberal yet high standing colleges, I realized with increasing certainty that I was called to a higher standard a Christ centered education. Several Christian colleges have reached out to me, but Union remains my foremost favorite, in spite of the price tag. Union s core values have impressed me boundlessly, with all aspects of learning between God, professor, student, university, and the community, as well as the present and future being addressed.
