Abelard and Aquinas Essay
Peter Abelard was a renowned dialectician from 1079 to 1142. He subjected theological doctrines to
logical analysis. In other words, he used rational argument to discover truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas,
was a believer in the power of reason, giving St. Augustine s theory an alternate approach. He taught
in Paris and Italy during the years 1225 to 1274. Both of these new age thinkers changed the way
Catholic followers viewed the natural world.
Peter Abelard was one of the new thinkers that applied scholasticism to his theological aspects.
According to the excerpt Scholastic thinkers assumed that some teachings of Christianity, which thy
accepted as true by faith, could also be demonstrated to be true by reason (238). Peter ... Show more

His greatest work was
Summa Theologica. In this work he attempted to merge faith with reason, and the works of Aristotle
with the scriptures. Historically, he is seen as an alternate approach to St. Augustine s view of the city
of man versus the city of God. Augustine and Aquinas shared the belief that the original sin was Adam
and Eve s venture through the garden of good and evil. On page 239, Aquinas held that both faith and
reason came from God, they were not in opposition to each other; properly understood, they supported
each other.. He did not want people to shun the idea of reason, he wanted the world to see that it was
not evil. Combining Christianity with Aristotelian knowledge, he shed light upon the difficulty to
distinguish common ground between the natural world and the supernatural world. The excerpt is
divided into two different sections, Whether, Besides the Philosophical Sciences, Any Further
Doctrine Is Required? and Whether God Exists?. In the second section he proves five ways God exists
by using Aristotle s technique in philosophy, they are motion, nature of efficient cause, possibility and
necessity, the graduation to be found in things, and the governance of the world. The way he words his
logic is extremely confusing. For example, Now it is not possible that the same thing should be at one
in actuality and potentiality in the same respect, but only in different respects. For what is actually hot

Blood Transfusion Case Study
Every day, the health care system faces many complex and controversial issues that raise unique
dilemma and most of the time this dilemma is very difficult to resolve. One of this challenging
dilemma is the refusal of blood transfusion by the patient or patient s relatives. Blood transfusion or
not is a crucial issue which creates a moral and legal dilemma for the health system; sometimes
dealing with such situation takes extra time and energy. Nevertheless, doctors and nurses are obliged
to provide the specific preferences and management treatment.

based on the point of view of those who make the decision, who require a decision, or who do not
participate in decision making (Figar Đorđević, 2016). In this case, the dilemma arises from religious
belief. We are faced with the religious beliefs of the patient who has strong criteria for choosing and
decision making and this is the beginning for an ethical dilemma. As we know religious beliefs make
decisions challenging, and in the medical community, Jehovah s Witnesses are known for their faith

beliefs with respect to God for giver life and obey him; they should not accept blood even in life
threatening situations. In their belief blood will be considered just for the atonement of sins.
Therefore, all members of Jehovah s Witnesses abstain from the blood and refusal of blood transfusion

Airport Construction Has A Major Effect On The Community
Airport construction has a major effect on everyone involved and also the community around the
airport. When an airport begins to make plans for expansion or repairs a whole list of things are
researched and planned years in advance. The airport manager is responsible for overseeing the
project and confirming that everything goes as planned and everyone stays safe in the process. There
are multiple regulations to abide by not only from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but by
the city and the Occupational Safety and Health Association (0SHA). All of these regulations are
enforced to help mitigate the risk involved in airport construction. Airport construction is normally
short term but whiles it s being performed everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So with that being an issue the airport is faced with the decision of buying new land which usually
results in buying whole neighborhoods and businesses. By doing this the airport personnel has to
make it right for the people living in these neighborhoods and offer them good compensation to move
away from the airport. They also have to think about the businesses around there and how the
economy will be effected if those around forced to move. But if the economy will benefit from the
construction at the airport in the long run the homeowners and businesses will not have a choice to
stay, but once again they will be takin care of. Communities that use roads and highways by airports
can be burdened by airport construction because of the increased traffic from construction vehicles
hauling equipment and supplies to the airport. A lot of times construction companies have to travel
through neighborhoods and other main roads that causes huge headaches for the community.
Airport construction also poses a short term but substantial threat to the environment with all the
different jobs being done, there are a lot of different construction equipment such as cranes, dozers,
excavators, concrete equipment, etc. that can cause problems with the environment. The main
environmental issues affected by include air, water, and noise pollution. Air pollution has always been
a big topic in everywhere and around an airport there is no

King Louis Vii s Reign
Louis VII was a Capetian King of the Franks from 1137 until his death. He was the son and successor
of King Louis IV of France, or most commonly known as Louis the Fat. He was married to Eleanor of
Aquitaine, one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in Western Europe. Reigned from 1137 to
1180; b. 1120. The second son of Louis VI and Adelaide of Maurienne. Louis s education at the
cathedral school in Paris prepared him for an ecclesiastical career; however, upon the death of his
brother, Philip, in 1131, he became heir to the French throne to which he succeeded in 1137.
Following their return from the Second Crusade (1477 1149), Louis procured an annulment for his
marriage with Eleanor of Aquitaine on the grounds of consanguinity. He ... Show more content on

In May 1152, Eleanor subsequently married the future Henry II of England (r. 1154 1189), whose
possessions in France and powerful ambition became a source of rivalry and conflict for Louis. His
contemporaries, including Odo de Deuil, Stephen of Paris, John of Salisbury, and Walter Map praised
Louis VII for his piety and his favorable disposition toward the church. He undertook pilgrimages to
Santiago de Compostela (1154 55), the Grande Chartreuse (1162 63), and to Canterbury (1179).
Because of a disputed papal election, Alexander III sought refuge in France in 1162, where he
received Louis s welcome. Louis s protection of Thomas Becket, who had fled to France in 1164 to
escape the wrath of Henry II, received widespread approval. Louis asserted his rights over the French
church, especially regarding episcopal elections in his realm and control over royal churches. To
provide continual support for his royal policies, elections to royal bishoprics often went to members of
the king s own household or to families loyal to Capetian interests. As a benefactor to the Templars,
Louis gave them the land for their commandery at Savigny, along with sizable rents and privileges. He
also made generous grants to smaller monastic

Little Grand Canyon Research Paper
The Grand Canyon tops many travelers ultimate bucket list. In a country with countless scenic views,
there s no shortage of the breathtaking sights. While it may be a small fraction of that other canyon in
Arizona, there s a Little Grand Canyon right in the heart of south Georgia. Georgia s Providence
Canyon is located about 150 miles south of Atlanta, and is part of a 1,003 acre outdoor recreation area.
Whether you re wandering the Peach State or embarking on a canyon tour of the U.S., Georgia s Little
Grand Canyon is worth a top spot on your travel list. The federal government decided not to make
Providence Canyon a national park. They must not realize the repercussion of doing so. Tourist,
educational information, and the environment wildlife each have effective outcomes on making this
canyon a national park. Tourism is travel for pleasure; also the theory and practice of touring, the
business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours.

Georgia s Little Grand Canyon was created by the erosion of soft multicolored soils. The water from
seas, ancient streams, coastal beaches, and deltas have somehow amazingly made this beautiful

walls. Believe it or not, but the walls of Providence Canyon has 43 different colors. The minerals have
stained the sediments to create a display of several colors that range from white to various shades of
pink, red, yellow, purple, black and brown. The erosion has also led to alluring rock formation.

Maryville Slogan Analysis
From an outsider s point of view Maryville College may be just a college, but for those who have
visited, or even attend, know it is much more. Aside from academics and our covenant, nature is a
large part of being a Scot. Nature and Maryville College go hand in hand and everyone on campus
knows it. Some schools keep the effect of nature quite subtle, but that simply is not the case, here, at
Maryville College. Whether it is the walks between classes and buildings, weekly mountain challenge
activities, or the first year orientation you are in it. What is subtle, to at least most freshman, is that
Maryville College has a trademark slogan Fit. Green. Happy.™ Fit. Green. Happy.™ is apart of
mountain challenge and primarily focuses on exercise and being outdoors. As a school, Maryville
College tries to incorporate this idea into, not only student life but life after graduation. ... Show more

The idea of fit is to use fitness as medicine; whether that be physical or mental. If fitness is used as
medicine it is believed to give the user physical, anti aging, and emotional/mental benefits. Physical
benefits of fitness are pretty straight forward, but they include: better cardiovascular and joint health, a
stronger musculoskeletal system, and a decrease risk of heart disease. According to Bruce Guillaume,
head of mountain challenge and FGH, being fit increases the longevity and quality of life. He said life
was what you made of it use it or lose it. Mental benefits are a bit like the anti aging idea of being fit,
meaning it is not exactly straightforward. Some studies show that by being fit and moving provides an
ideal balance of neurotransmitters, which includes: the ability to focus, mood stability, and a happy

The Debate Between Pro Choice And Pro Life
Abortion The debate between pro choice and pro life has gone on for numerous years. Using medical
technology medical staff and mothers are able to see what happens to the unborn child during the
abortion process. A mother can see the image of her unborn child; abortion should be illegal because
the unborn child feels pain, there can be medical complications to the mother and alternatives do exist.
Women are now able to see inside of the mother s womb and see the unborn child s heartbeat and sex
of the child. This is done by ultra sound (US) technology and can be seen in 2 D, 3 D and 4 D it is
even possible to see the child in color. The mother can see the living child inside her. The ultra sound
serves as a window to the womb (Boucher 2004). Pro life supporters have showmen the US picture
and movies of the unborn child to women who are planning to abort their pregnancy and stated that
90% of women have changed their minds. First trimester abortions account for 88.4% of the USA and
73% in Canada. However, the US that is being shown is in the second trimester (Wiebe, Adams 2009)
to be able to see the growth of the unborn child.
Many states now require that a woman who is going to have an abortion view an US prior to the
abortion. In a survey that was conducted many women felt that viewing the US was a positive
experience even though some still chose to go through with an abortion. Patients have stated that
seeing the US was helpful, but the US images needed

Heartburn Remedies
Natural heartburn remedies are deemed as the best methods of treating heartburn and acid reflux for
good. Heartburn is that burning sensation one feels spreading across the chest coming up from the pits
of the stomach and often reaching the throat and leaving a sour, acidic taste. Heartburn occurs
normally after partaking of a huge meal and bending or lying down. These actions result in the acids
in the stomach getting pushed into the esophagus, thus the acidic taste. The burning sensation is the
result of the esophageal walls reacting to the acid.
Heartburn is experienced by everyone at a certain time, so it is a rather natural occurrence and not
necessarily a serious condition. Some people however are frequent heartburn sufferers and they ...

Too much reliance on these remedies also tends to cause side effects like diarrhea and constipation.
This is the reason why natural heartburn remedies are best preferred and recommended as long term
heartburn cures. Treating heartburn naturally minimizes the risk of unwanted side effects which can
potentially worsen the condition.
The Advantages ofNatural Heartburn Remedies
The foremost advantage of these remedies is of course the reduced risk of side effects. Since these
remedies make use of natural methods to cure the condition i.e. eating healthy, drinking the right
amount of fluids, working out properly, avoiding foods that cause heartburn and eating food types that
help with proper digestion, etc., these treatment methods are safe to follow and use in the long term.
Another advantage to opting for natural heartburn remedies is improved overall well being. Experts
say that obesity contributes to the frequent occurrence of heartburn. Aside from this, being overweight
also makes a person more prone to other diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Natural
methods of treating heartburn and acid reflux can help you achieve a healthy body weight and reduce
the risk of acquiring other

The Sino Philippine South China Sea Conflict
Introduction In addressing a long time conflict, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled
on 29 October 2015 that it will be holding hearings over a South China Sea territorial dispute filed by
the Philippines against the People s Republic of China. The South China Sea has been a region of
large dispute over both unresolved island and maritime claims by the People s Republic of China,
Republic of China (Taiwan), Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines (Buszynski and Sazlan,
2007). The most recent issues at hand is the PRC s construction efforts in the highly contentious
Spratly Islands, or Nansha (南沙群岛) over the past year along with the Philippines case filed with the
Permanent Court of Arbitration. In this paper, I will be discussing the historical context and situation,
examining the academic and legal responses to the issue, and analyzing the conflict within the
international law framework. Because this is a relatively recent development with little to no legal
scholarship surrounding the event, my analysis will be limited to news articles and journal articles
regarding previous Sino Philippine maritime conflict.

Inspect Your Exterior Doors for Damage In an emergency evacuation situation, you don t want poorly
constructed or maintained exterior doors trapping your employees inside. Take a few minutes to
inspect important aspects of the door, such as the hinges, the latch, and the knob. Questions to ask
when inspecting your doors include: Do the hinges move easily or haltingly? Is there any catch in the
latch or any trick you need to use to get it open? Does the door handle move easily or with difficulty?
Is the door too heavy for weaker employees to move? Does it swing inward, potentially preventing
people from escaping in a panic? If the answer to any of these questions is problematic, it may be time
to either get your door repaired or replaced. After all, you don t want an inward swinging door
dooming your employees to a death by fire. Bring It Together With a Fire Drill Conducting fire drills
is the best way to check how prepared your employees are for an emergency. Never announce them
before: unveiling them without warning will help make sure your employees know exactly what to

Storage Space Essay
Where is a very large, integrated collection of data in a Server, held? Yes, the Storage Spaces. These
Storage Spaces lets us combine individual hard disks into storage pools and these can then be
managed as a single entity. Storage Spaces is a technology that groups the storage pools and the
storage disks which will enable the virtual storage capabilities in Windows and Windows Server
(Microsoft Corporation, n.d). The available capacity in the storage pools are then used to create virtual
disks which are called storage spaces. Firstly in this paper, I would like to provide an overview of the

The first one is the simple storage layout that has no resilience, meaning it does not have the capability
of quickly recovering from the difficulties or the disk failures. This storage layout simply writes the
given data into multiple physical disks but doesn t make a clone copy or any information about the
parity. This type of layout is a good choice if your requirement doesn t need a backup of data or the
disk failure scenarios doesn t affect your requirements. This simple storage layout is a good choice in
terms of offering performance for your application if it has its own security essentials. Another type of
storage layout is the parity layout which not only writes the data into stripes across the physical disks
but also writes the parity information into extra copies. This layout is suitable for the requirements that
require maximum capacity with lower writing performances. Example of using the parity layout is
while archiving the media and when media streaming requires huge loads. The last storage layout is
the mirror layout which is similar to the parity storage layout, but with greater performances when
SSDs are added to the storage pool and when the storage tiers are being used. This resilient type writes
the data onto multiple physical disks along with making extra copies of the data and offers protection
to the data in the events of disk failures. The other metric that describes the functionality of storage
spaces are

The Characters Of Coraline And Harry Potter
Literary heroes that are also ordinary children are engaging to readers, particularly child readers.
James Pope and Julia Round write that Roald Dahl is a fascinating author in that his books for
children feature child heroes who are very often neither hero nor villain, but a wild, subversive
combination of both (258). These characteristics are also true of Coraline and Harry Potter, as they are
presented as imperfect, but ultimately find the power within themselves to save what is important to
them. Children readers are empowered by Coraline and Harry because they identify with these
ordinary children and feel as if they can also make a difference in their lives, as the characters defeat
the evil in theirs. Children are more likely to engage with characters they identify with, but when a
character is also a hero, children feel as if they themselves have the power to take agency in their own
lives. Coraline is a representation of any child that is easily bored and seeks adventure, but she also
displays bravery and heroism. Coraline s greatest strength is her imagination, which she uses to her
advantage. Most children have active imaginations as she does, and this quality that they have in
common will result in children identifying with Coraline and believing they are just as capable of
surmounting obstacles as she is. Coraline is also not perfect, and although many children like to
pretend they are perfect, they know they are not. When she loses the marble containing

The Use Of Motifs In The Bean Trees
Written by Barbara Kingsolver, The Bean Trees contains characters who demonstrate how living
creatures are able to find methods of growing and transforming, despite unusual arrangements or
lifestyle. Throughout the novel, in the chapters The One to Get Away and Dream Angels the use of
motifs are greatly emphasized. Rebirth is one of the two important motifs, as the pattern of life and
death is repeated in the novel. Frequently, this theme is connected with dualities: when one member of
a pair passes, the other gains life force. Newt Hardbine represents as some sort of double for Taylor, in
the chapter The One to Get Away . For example, in school, people could barely tell them different
from each other, and their lives appeared to move ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dried up seed that, once buried, becomes a living thing, symbolizes her own life experience. For
instance, the night blooming cereus that Edna Poppy brings, which appears up on page 240, to Taylor
and Lou Ann before Taylor makes her trip to Oklahoma serves as an indicator, representing the
transient quality to the characters chances. The wisteria vines speak to the cooperative connections
that predominant the novel, and most importantly, the development of bean trees speaks to the
development of Turtle Greer and her development all through the novel. Bean, (128) Turtle s first
word, symbolizes the guarantee that, similar to a dried up seed that grows, an emotionally or
physically wounded woman may flourish if sufficiently given consideration. The bean trees, another
name for the wisteria vine that Turtle spots in Dog Doo Park, symbolize change, a spot of life amidst
infertility. The bean trees have a cooperative association with bugs called rhizobia, which climb up
and down the wisteria vine s roots and give a system that transfer nutrients. This mutual aid
symbolizes the assistance and adoration individuals give each other. The bean trees, similar to
individuals, thrive with a system of support. Taylor s interest with seeds and vegetables is also an
example of of the cycle of eternal rest and new

Stop and Frisk: Cleaning up the Streets, or Racial Profiling at its Finest?
Taryn Konkler
Introduction to Law Enforcement

Imagine innocently walking down the street in a city you ve lived in your whole life, when all of a
sudden you hear the dreaded woop woop and see those flashing red and blue lights. The police. They
interrogate you, ask your whereabouts, and finally, they frisk you. Of course, they find nothing; they
rarely do when they search people. Although it s wrong and demoralizing, you know it s something
you ll have to get used to as an African American living in New York City.

The statistics show that to be an African American or Hispanic in New York you are more than twice
as likely to get stopped as a white or Asian person. Studies of reports show that 15,000 or 30% of
stops are deemed unconstitutional; and those are just the ones that are reported, imagine all of those
that go unreported. Imagine all of those people who were victimized just because of the color of their
skin. The stop and frisk procedure was once a good thing that helped clean up the streets, but now it s
becoming an epidemic of racial profiling, and teaching racism and intolerance to anyone who is a
victim or witness of these stops.
There s no evidence that the stop and frisk is lowering or suppressing homicide rates in NYC. Murders
have dropped steadily in 1990, says Chris Dunn, spokesperson for the NYCLU. He s saying that stop
and frisks have nothing to do with the drop in homicides, statistics show that in 2002 97,296 people
were stopped and there were 587 homicides, the numbers in 2012 were 685,724 and 532. With almost
a 600% increase in stops there is no reason that we should only have 55 less homicides. There is a
reason though; police are stopping people simply because they re a minority. Or perhaps it s because
they are wearing a hoodie in the summer or shorts in the winter, which is cause for reasonable
suspicion. This leads to distrust for law

Research Paper On Solar Energy
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever evolving
technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial
photosynthesis. The Solar energy as a kind of natural energy, with its abundant and no polluting shows
its unique advantages, has been internationally recognized as one of the most competitive energy
future. The application of solar energy has a hug impact on society. The application of solar energy
has a long history. Back to thousands years ago, in china. People used a concave mirror to convergent
sunlight flame ignited moxa. That is a great progress in human history. In 1615, a French engineer de
Caux (also, de Caus) invented the a solar powered water pump. He imagined a lot of applications of
his steam powered machine, including the motorcars, but none of them came to a realization. At the
EXPO in Paris in 1878, the first solar printing machine was on display. Solar energy is widely used
and by continuous study because it has many advantages. First of all, it is inexhaustible renewable
energy. The energy from the sun radiation is about 1.6x1023kw per second. The energy that reaches
the earth approximately 8x1013kw per second. That s equivalent of 6x109 tons of standard coal. And
the life of the sun is at least 4 billion years left. Second solar is widely distributed, sunshine goes

Identifying The Search For An Keyword Search Tool
A. Email messages A forensic accountant could use a few different techniques to assist in reducing the
volume of email messages he or she has to examine. One technique they could utilize is using a
keyword search. This is probably the easiest to implement in searching for specific emails. Keyword
search tools generally come in two types, indexed or not indexed. An indexed keyword search tool
depends on the index that it created in order to actually locate documents having the specific search
terms. A non indexed keyword search scans through the document with each search iteration to
determine whether the specific term exists. They keyword search will accurately find documents
within the search criteria, however the documents may not have any relevance to what the forensic
accountant is actually looking for. Therefore, the forensic accountant wants to be sure he or she is
utilizing specific key words to find the evidence he or she is looking for. Another method is context
search. The context search adds context to the search criteria. Context search helps improve the
keyword search solution by addressing the problems present in keyword searches related to synonymy
and polysemy. Synonymy is a common linguistic issue where different words are used to express the
same concept, and polysemy is where the same word can have different meanings (Fordham, 2013).
The context search method combines several advance techniques in a simple user interface, making

Ir The Iranian Nuclear Program
The Iranian nuclear program began in the 1950 s under the Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. The Shah
applied for help to establish the program through the Atoms for Peace program. The program was
started by the United States and helped provide a nuclear research reactor and power plants for Iran.
At this time the United States and the rest of the world believed that Iran was interested in nuclear
power as a means to provide a power source to help modernize Iran. Seventeen years later Iran is one
of 51 nations to sign the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. In 1979 the Iranian government is
overthrown and Shah Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini comes to power and ends the nuclear power

continued to provide technology to Iran for the purposes of a peaceful nuclear energy program. In
2003 the European Union imposed economic sanctions on Iran due to the discovery of enriched
Uranium being found by the United Nation atomic agency. The ban lasts as long as Iran continues to
produce enriched Uranium. In November of 2004 a deal is struck between the EU and Iran to continue
to help Iran develop peaceful nuclear power as long as Iran stops production of enriched Uranium.
Between 2004 and the end of 2006 Iran completed construction of a heavy water reactor thereby
causing the United Nations to ban the import and export of materials and technology used in uranium
enrichment, reprocessing and ballistic missiles (Gootman, 2006, December 23). In 2011 the United
Nations provided credible proof that Iran was working on a nuclear device, this evidence resulted in
the strictest sanctions to date. The sanctions prevented Iran from conducting international

Shrew by William Shakespeare, it shows that people are able to change. Katherine was a shrew,
everyone was scared of since she was so harsh. Katherine scared Hortensio and Gremio to the point
where Gremio is calling her the devil. Hortensio and Gremio fight over Bianca, who is going to marry
her. Baptista wouldn t let Bianca marry until Katherine. Lucentio fell in love with Bianca at first sight

The Rhetorical Situation Summary
In his article, The Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd Bitzer defines and elaborates on rhetorical situation. He
writes, Rhetorical situation may be defined as a complex of persons, events, objects, and relations
presenting an actual or potential exigence which can be completely or partially remove if discourse,
introduced into the situation, can so constrain human decision or action as to bring about the
significant modification of the exigence (6). To put it simply, a rhetorical situation is some response to
a certain situation (Bitzer 3). Bitzer also explains that there are three parts to any rhetorical situation:
the exigence, the audience, and the constraints. These three components exist before any discourse is
created or presented (6.)
On July 27th, 2016, Avalon lifeguard Emily Blake sent a message to the other members of the Avalon
staff, informing them that she could not work her assigned shift due to other commitments that she
needed to attend to. Following Bitzer s definition, Emily s message in response to this complication is
a response to a rhetorical situation. When composing her response, Emily had the choice of what
method of communication she would use and with who she would communicate. Because of the
decisions she made regarding these two matters, Emily s response to the rhetorical situation was an ...

A New Client For A Cereal Making Company
A new client for a cereal making company has asked us to help promote their cereal as healthy . This
new cereal is called *name here*, and it is our job to determine the correlation between calories and
potassium in order to make the new cereal healthier by lowering the calories but increasing potassium.
We have researched the interrelationship between calories and potassium and this paper is a product of
our analysis. We have compared data between the top fifteen cereals and have found that calories and
potassium have a negative correlation. However this is only a coincidence as it is other factors, such as
sugar, fiber, protein, and fat that correlate most directly to calories, while certain ingredients have
more potassium than others. Calories and potassium are both essential parts of the diet that the human
body needs in order to survive. A calorie is a unit of energy that measures how much energy the body
gets just by eating or drinking it. It is generally thought that the higher the calories, the worse it is for
the body. It is thought that way because the extra calories that the body doesn t use is converted to fat,
and too much fat is linked to health problems such as arthritis (joint degeneration), heart disease and
diabetes. Potassium is an electrolyte (meaning it conducts electricity in the body), it is essential for the
proper function of cells, tissues and organs. It is crucial for heart function and the contraction of
smooth and skeletal muscles. Too much

Philadelphia Audubon Inquiry Summary
Scott Weidensaul is an internationally known ornithologist, meaning he knows quite a lot about birds
(in particular owls). He has not only been the author of many books but the writer for sources such as
the Philadelphia Inquirer and Smithsonian Magazine. Weidensaul has also directed several research
efforts and has even been nominated for the Pulitzer prize.
He spoke at an Audubon Event held here at Lyco in November. I originally went to the event as extra
credit for a biology class but ended up learning a lot and really enjoying the lecture.
Before the event began, visitors were able to interact with two owls in the lobby outside the lecture
hall. The smaller of the two, named Bumper, was blind due to being hit by a car. The larger one ...

The entire lecture hall where we normally have bio classes was full and some people were even
standing or using extra chairs. The second thing that surprised me was that someone could talk about
owls for so long. It really was fascinating that Mr. Weidensaul knew so much about them.
He started his talk by describing owls as souls of the night. he explained that no culture is indifferent
to owls, some revere them and others fear them. There have been owls in cave drawings, art, and
literature throughout history.
Another interesting part of the talk was Weidensaul s description of how scientists think of owls. At
first, it was believed that owls were related to night birds and predators but with better technology,
scientists were able to sequence more genomes and show that the closest relatives to owls are in fact
mouse birds. It was also found that barn owls split from typical owls, the other family, around 45
million years ago.
I also found it interesting that the ear tufts on owls are just used for camo, not hearing. Their actual
ears are just openings in the skull. These openings are often asymmetrical on the owls head! For
example, the one on the right points upward and the one on the left points downward. This is so the
owl can locate soft sounds without moving its

The Violence Of A Child s Body Bag
A gloomy night sky surrounded the flashing lights of blue and red. The moon, usually full and bright,
appeared to be as lifeless and pale as the victim being pulled into the ambulance. As I got closer, I
noticed the body bag. A child s body bag. Even the most apathetic officers were filled with sorrow. I
stared out into the murderous lake while the ambulance pulled away. To think that these calm waters
were the raging killer is unethical. There had to be someone involved in the killing of this innocent
child. Where were the parents of this child? I believe that healthy relationships begin with unity. The
unity of a mother and child is a sacred relationship. It is suspicious that no one is here for him. I
thought of my family, and the life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

would ve been under the influence. After reporting my findings to my boss, I headed for the bus
station. After five minutes of waiting, the bus finally arrived. The rear doors opened, and the smell of
public transportation filled the air. I sat in the back by myself. There was a man to the far left of me
sobbing and looking at his phone. My son, she killed my son. He kept repeating. Where is my son? I
was hesitant to approach him, but I decided to go for it. I couldn t really see this man because his head
was hung low, with his hands covering his face. Excuse me, sir? I managed to say. He looked up at
me. His eyes were all were red and his nose was swollen, probably because of all the crying. They
were never ending tears, they just kept streaming down his face. Are you alright? I m sorry, I just
overheard you say something about someone killing another individual? I stuttered. He wiped his tears
with his shirt sleeve, and looked straight into my eyes. Who are you? He questioned. I m with the
Xochimilco police department, and I would like to know more about your case, I responded. I listened
to this man talk about his life being married to the love of his life. For a short period of time, he was
happy with his high school sweetheart. All was well until she came home late one night. The man, Mr.
Belmonte, said that his wife left him and his child all alone.

Positive And Negative Effects On Social Media
The Oxford dictionary defines privacy as the state or condition of being free from being observed or
disturbed by other people (2017). It should not come as a surprise that websites designed to share
pictures, ideas, and what is for dinner, leave individuals feeling that their privacy has been invaded. It
is also not surprising that some people are oblivious to the effects of what they post online. It is safe to
say the loss of privacy can be self imposed for societies need to collaborate and socialized is the
reason social media sites were created in the first place. Jeff Jarvis tells the need for publicness or the
need to be public is strong upon our society today (Berkman, 2012). In today s technology age, when
everything can be found in just a matter of clicks, it is easy to overshare. Yet the information that is
published or posted on social media sites is not the only information that is gathered and stored. Many
social media sites such as Facebook, collect data behind the scenes and sell it to marketing firms and
other data collection firms. Every like or when signing into other sites using Facebook credentials,
something new is learned about the user. Infringement of privacy, whether self imposed or not, can
have both positive and negative effects on an individual in a social media environment. There is
enormous talk today about privacy. During a panel discussion a question was posed, How much
should people worry about the loss of online privacy? Jeff Jarvis,

Hall s Theory of Servant Leadership Essay examples
Introduction This movie tells the story of a 34 year relationship between a lab assistant, Vivien
Thomas, and a surgeon, Alfred Blalock. It also tells of the struggles and triumphs experienced during a
journey of human development for two people whom, in turn, influence the development of a
worldwide community of surgeons and their patients. It is a great example of how leaders mature and
transform their consciousness to be understanding of other people and to deepen the meaning of their
words, behaviors, and values.
Hall s Theory Servant leadership is a way of life that evolves and matures with the passage of time.

In fact, Thomas put his plans for education on hold because of his inability to move beyond a lifestyle
of self preservation. In the 1930s, Vivien worked as a talented carpenter. While this line of work was
sufficient to put food on the table and provide shelter for his family, it did not fulfill his inner need to
develop relationships and self worth.
In the development of Thomas, it was an important gesture for Blalock to give Thomas a white lab
jacket. The symbolism of Blalock handing Thomas a white lab jacket strengthened Thomas identity by
reinforcing the mission of their shared beliefs. Meaning, Thomas was able to see that he and Blalock
shared a common value. The jacket represented the belonging to a team and reflected an institutional
acceptance between Blalock and Thomas in the lab.
Phase II In this phase, the leader heightens their awareness for others and begins to experience events
through the perspective of another person, which culminates into the formation of relationships. It is in
this phase that the leader begins to cope and realize their self worth.
Within the realm of the lab, Thomas s moment of awakening his self worth happened when Blalock
grew angry with him for not setting the recording drums. It is not the act itself that was a significant
contribution to Thomas s self worth, it was the meaning behind the behavior because, What is most
important is not what happens but what it means (Bolman and Deal, 2008, p. 253).

Policing in Regards to Race, Gender and Ethnicity
In the United States the issue of Policing in regards to race, gender and ethnicity has been an ongoing
reform in which state and local legislatures have been dealing with as of recent years. Although there
have been legislation on equal opportunity, the primary significance in promoting equality has been
the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act is a federal legislation, which in part bars
discrimination based on race or gender. Employers from local and state agencies are all affected by
this legislation. To enforce and see that the legislation is carried out accordingly, the government
created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. However, prior to the Civil Rights Act, we
take a look back into the historical overview of policing within the United States. Policing in America
is a transplant of English heritage policing model. During the early colonial times, formal police
departments had yet to have been created. Over time outbreak social disorder and crime erupted
causing for a more formal police to model. Formal policing model began to arise in the late 1800 s and
leaders at the time attempted to reduce control of the police by politicians. As the 20th century rolled
in, the focus began to latch closely on the thought of policing to be an actual professional force.
Ultimately, as time progressed so did reforms to change the directive of police department policies.
The reforms came at a time where police officers

White Fang
By Jack London
1. Survival of the Fittest
This means that only the brightest and strongest will survive. From the beginning White Fang was
strong. He was the only pup of his litter to survive. His strength and intelligence made him the feared
dog in the Indian camp. While defending Judge Scott, White Fang takes three bullets but, amazingly,
he is able to pull through the operation of removing the bullets. White Fang learns how to fight the
other dogs, to obey new masters, learn to fight under the evil guidance of Beauty, and be loved by
Weedon Scott.

If there was a weak dog he should be killed basically. The strong to White Fang were Gray Beaver,
and Beauty who would beat White Fang if he tried to run away, which he took as strength.
2. They were fire makers! They were gods!
This is said because White Fang watches the men make a fire. He sees this as them making a life that
is red and warm out of something dead and cold. To him this was godlike.
3. Food and fire, protection and companionship, were some of the things he received from the god. In
return, he guarded the god s property, defended his body, worked for him, and obeyed him.
This quote shows why White Fang acted friendly towards Gray Beaver. Gray Beaver gave him food,
warmth, protected him, and gave him companionship. While White Fang guarded his property from
other people who might want to steal it, defended Gray Beaver from harm, and obeyed him.
4. quot; They were his environment, these men, and they were molding the clay of him into a more

Where many another animal would have died or had its spirit broken, he adjusted himself and lived,
and at no expense of the spirit. quot;

educational assistance to street children through a network of government, non government, and

formal schools need to adjust their educational system to cater to children with irregular schedules and

of Cyprus, and taken what was most loved by the king and by all the kingdom; Callista, Vasilios s only
daughter. This abduction had stemmed from a failed marriage arrangement with the prince of Smyrna,
a distant land on the Aegean Sea. Callista was not happy with the arrangement and begged her father
to stop the deal and let her stay unmarried. Vasilios listened to his daughter and declined the generous
offer from the king of Smyrna. The king of Smyrna was enraged by the refusal. He sent a band of
pirates disguised as sea traders to capture Callista and bring her back to Smyrna. The ruse worked and
Callista was taken. The kingdom of Kyrenia entered a period of upset at the loss of the beloved
princess. Vasilios took action and put together a group of sixty of his best men that he lead on ... Show

He orders the crew to continue on, wanting to explore this mysterious island, wondering if this was a
place they took Callista. They walk for hours from the shore, no one exactly sure what they were
looking for, or what they expected to find. At last, they reach the mouth of a great valley. Vasilios,
leading his crew stops, and as everyone catches up, they behold the mountainous valley. Then they
look closer, and there, down in the valley was something no one expected to find. Down in the valley,
they discovered gigantic, hairy, beasts. These enormous beasts had long, shaggy hair, and two sharp,
protruding tusks. Hundreds of these mammoth beasts were there at the bottom of this valley on the
strange, strange island. The crew became so frightened at the sight of these shaggy monsters, they
promptly turned around and hurriedly began the long journey back to

However, Robert Bruce XVI, XVII, and Scottish Nobles want to settle the war diplomatically for
personnel benefits and later betray Wallace. This betrayal leads to Wallace s capture where he is
tortured and publically executed. Prior to his execution, Wallace departs the world with one last word
FREEDOM ! This word single word coupled with Wallace s inspiration and passion reunites the
Scottish Nobles, Robert Bruce XVII, and the Scottish clans to take up arms as a united front against
the English to, later, gain their independence in 1314.
Why Braveheart?
Braveheart and the character William Wallace explain how courage, passion, and inspiration can
motivate people to unite against a common threat even when the odds of success are low. Additionally,
the story of William Wallace illustrates how leadership traits can have a long lasting effect. William
Wallace stays true to his beliefs with such dedication that even under the pressure of torture; he is
capable of motivating his fellow Scotsmen to fight for freedom after his death. This is true leadership!
Anyone that can inspire a following after death has reached the highest tier of leadership. This is the
epitome of a leader. Now this essay will transition to the background of a different type of leader,
Ahmad ibn Fadlan from the motion picture, The 13th Warrior.

Creationism In The Classroom

Eng. 122: Module 4 Assignment

Evolution and Creationism in the Classroom For years the United States government, and the majority
of the science community, has been pushing creationism out of the science classroom in favor of
evolution, because creationism is considered unscientific by most scientists (Baker). Many scientists
think that creationism shouldn t even be mentioned, for fear of legitimizing what they think is
unscientific (Reece). Regardless of all of this, the United States public acceptance of evolution
remains low and support for creationism remains high compared to other western countries (Baker).
Because of this there are some scientists and educators pushing for teachers to start

Chilean Military Coup
Evaluate the role of the U.S government in the 1973 Chilean Military Coup d etat and dictatorship.
The 1973 Chilean military coup d état was politically and materially supported by the U.S.
government and it s Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA has previously disclosed prior knowledge
of the plot that overthrew Salvador Allende but despite incriminating documentation revolving around
President Nixon and Henry Kissinger, the CIA denies direct involvement by the U.S government in
the events that followed. On the 11th of September 1973, the Chilean Armed Forces under the
command of General Augusto Pinochet began the overthrow of the democratically elected Socialist
President Salvador Allende. Under Pinochet s reign, 250,000 people were detained, ... Show more

We can t let a country go communist simply because its people are irresponsible. He authorised $10
million to be used by the CIA to prevent Allende from coming to power. President Nixon arranged the
instructions to be specifically directed by the CIA without the knowledge of the Departments of State
or the U.S. Ambassador in Chile. The CIA arranged a variety of actions, including making overtures to
the military of a foreign government to request its insights, forwarding worldwide propaganda
information for placement in local media, initiating efforts to promote public opposition to Allende
among leading newspapers such as El Mercurio, and contacting a Catholic layman who was in touch
with Church leaders in Chile to influence their attitudes toward Allende. The U.S. government through
the actions of the CIA devised a number of plans which can be seen in a range of strategy papers
found in the National Security Council Archive that recorded the efforts to destabilise Chile
economically and overturn Allende s socialist regime. The U.S government had liaison relationships
in Chile with the purpose of securing assistance in gathering intelligence on external targets. The CIA

One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Chapter 1 Summary
Bromden mops and sweeps most of the time while he is at the ward due to the fact that people believe
he is deaf and dumb. The Big Nurse, Miss Ratched, enters with her confident attitude and immediately
gets mad at the black boys standing in the hall. However, she does not want the other patients to see
her in this state, so she calms herself. The woman gets angry any time her schedule is ruined or
something does not go according to plan. She tells the black boys to shave Bromden, and they obey.
Bromden does his best to hide, and he thinks back to his memories while fog surrounds him. When the
fog clears out, the new Admission arrives, and everyone stops to evaluate him. His name is Randle
McMurphy; Bromden is instantly reminded of his father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McMurphy walks to the Acute side, the ones whose illnesses are curable, and tries to strike a
conversation with Harding, who is supposed to be the craziest man. Every man in the ward begins to
ask the new patient many questions. Then Big Nurse comes to tell McMurphy that he needs to follow
the rules and take a shower, but he refuses to listen. Miss Ratched is reminded of Mr. Taber, an
intolerable ward manipulator, when she meets McMurphy. Bromden goes over the schedule he is
forced to go through every day. Some mornings he hides to break the repetitive actions, but other days
he finds it easier to move along with the routine like everyone else does. He compares it to being
jerked around in a cartoon world. He too remembers how Taber was defiant before the Big Nurse put
him through multiple shock treatments to control him. He now pays attention to what is happening
around him, and he is in one of the nurse s meetings. McMurphy makes the nurse agitated, so she
brings up his charge of rape. He attempts to make the doctor laugh by saying he is an insane man. He
succeeds, and then Doctor Spivey continues to tell him the theory of the Therapeutic

Chin A Nation Of Varying Size Dating
Unlike the United States, China has been a nation of varying size dating back over 4,000 years with
over 20 different ruling dynasties. Within relatively recent history of the past 175 years, China has
undergone considerable economic shifts including a heavy communist push. Many times, the
causation for these events was war. This idea was seen numerous times in ancient China; for example,
the Ming treasure ships that were sent out for monetary and military conquest were a result of a naval
and military dominance in the Eastern Hemisphere, which allowed them to gain new countries as
tributaries with ease. Although these ships were successful in their missions, they eventually had to
destroy the ships to offset the large cost of the growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prior to 1810 Western nations had been spending 350 million Mexican silver dollars on porcelain,
cotton, silks, brocades, and various grades of tea, by 1837 opium represented 57 percent of Chinese
imports, and for the fiscal period 1835 36 alone China exported 4.5 million silver dollars (England and
China: The Opium Wars, 1839 60). This demonstrates how the illegal opium trade largely imbalanced
the trade with the West. It was estimated that between four and twelve million Chinese males under
the age of 40 were addicted to the use of opium. Tensions grew rapidly following the Kowloon
Incident, where drunk British sailors from several opium clipper ships rioted in Kowloon, killing a
Chinese man and vandalizing a Buddhist temple (The First and Second Opium Wars). Lin Ze xu, the
Emperor s special emissary, ordered the seizure of opium and closing of ports. In response, the British
superintendent of trade, Charles Elliot, ordered the blockade of Pearl River, thus initiating the war.
Economically, China cut off trade with Britain and the Western nations. This reinforces the idea that
they were an isolationist country with respect to trading with the West.
The first Opium War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Nanking on August 29, 1842. Some of
the most important economic parts of the treaty included, Ceding the island of Hong Kong to Great
Britain, opened five Treaty ports to Western trade and residence, and paid nine million dollars in
reparations to the

Persuasive Essay On Agriculture
When you think of the word agriculture farming is probably the first thought that comes to mind. At
its most basic element, agriculture is the way in which we produce food, the most basic human need.
There is an untold amount of differing opinions on the topic of how we should grow food; smaller
family farms being pitted against commercial operations, conventional agriculture against organic
practices, and much of the public does not know what side to pick. Agriculture has developed into a
highly controversial issue, with each view point claiming that it is the only correct way to farm;
despite this, it is imperative that we lay aside our differences in opinion and come together if we are
going to create a sustainable food system responsible for feeding 9 billion hungry mouths.
By the year 2050, estimates show that over 9 billion people will inhabit Earth, and it is imperative that
agriculture finds a way to feed them all. That is about 1.5 billion more people than there are today.
One of the biggest dilemmas that agriculture faces is that relatively little more land can be converted
into land used for agriculture production, without causing irreparable, detrimental effects to the
environment. The damage that this would cause is the subject for another essay, but the bottom line is
that it is necessary we produce this food using the land we already have. The only way we can
accomplish this is to combine the best practices of organic, or small farms, with those of

The Elements Of A Mediterranean Diet
Mediterranean Diet
The elements of a Mediterranean diet as I have come to know them through my stay here are bread,
olive oil, wine, prosciutto, and cheese, along with pizza, pasta, and gelato. However, researchers
studying the Mediterranean diet for its health effects would say that it consists of fruits, vegetables,
legumes, cereal, fish, and a moderate intake of red wine with meals (Sofi, Cesari, Abbate, Gensini,
Casini 337). Foods that are defined as being specifically opposed to the structure of the Mediterranean
diet are red, processed meats and dairy products (Sofi, Cesari, Abbate, Gensini, Casini 337). Although,
I would have to argue that cheese is eaten nearly in excess and is certainly a dairy product
The Mediterranean diet receives so much attention because it is valued for its contribution to a healthy
cardiovascular system. Studies have indicated that adherence to such a diet is a significant protective
factor against the development of chronic diseases, specifically cardiovascular diseases, degenerative
diseases (such as Alzheimer s or Parkinson s disease), and cancer (Sofi, Cesari, Abbate, Gensini,
Casini 337). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most noticeable differences in the way that the Mediterranean diet is consumed, compared
to my personal eating habits is the way that such careful steps are taken to ensure that the meal is
enjoyed and appreciated to the greatest extent possible. For example, the wine is valued because of its
ability to cleanse the mouth between bites to ensure that the flavors of the food are experienced over
and over. The wine is not selected for its own flavor or enjoyment so much as it is chosen to
counteract the kind of food that it will be paired

Social Interview Model
The other day, I stumbled across an interview with a plus sized model on TV. Her name was Tess
Munster and she has become famous for becoming the first size 22 model to sign with a major
modeling agency. Not personally being a fan of the modeling/celebrity world, my excitement was not
very high when I heard this; but she is happy with what she is doing, so congratulations to her. The
interviewer started out by talking about the backlash and negative comments she has received from the
internet about being overweight and a model. (I, personally, have to question the quality of life a
person has who spends most of their spare time on the internet trolling others just to try to make them
feel bad). Munster, during her interview, gave the impression of someone who has come to embrace
the body she has and is very happy with her life. There was one comment that struck a chord with me,
however. The interviewer asked Munster about her thoughts about the health risk factors associated
with excessive weight gain. Munster replied that you do not know what conditions an individual is
going through and health should be a personal issue which does not need to be shared with the public.

To me, it seemed that the interviewer was hinting around to get a comment about what Munster does
to keep healthy, if anything. However, this interview segment was more of a feel good fluff piece of
journalism, so all of the questions were essentially softballs and the interviewer did not press any
harder for answers to that question. Now I am not able to speculate on how healthy or unhealthy of a
lifestyle she may lead, but unfortunately, an individual s personal health has more of an effect on
society than one may

  • 2. Abelard and Aquinas Essay Peter Abelard was a renowned dialectician from 1079 to 1142. He subjected theological doctrines to logical analysis. In other words, he used rational argument to discover truth. Saint Thomas Aquinas, was a believer in the power of reason, giving St. Augustine s theory an alternate approach. He taught in Paris and Italy during the years 1225 to 1274. Both of these new age thinkers changed the way Catholic followers viewed the natural world. Peter Abelard was one of the new thinkers that applied scholasticism to his theological aspects. According to the excerpt Scholastic thinkers assumed that some teachings of Christianity, which thy accepted as true by faith, could also be demonstrated to be true by reason (238). Peter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His greatest work was Summa Theologica. In this work he attempted to merge faith with reason, and the works of Aristotle with the scriptures. Historically, he is seen as an alternate approach to St. Augustine s view of the city of man versus the city of God. Augustine and Aquinas shared the belief that the original sin was Adam and Eve s venture through the garden of good and evil. On page 239, Aquinas held that both faith and reason came from God, they were not in opposition to each other; properly understood, they supported each other.. He did not want people to shun the idea of reason, he wanted the world to see that it was not evil. Combining Christianity with Aristotelian knowledge, he shed light upon the difficulty to distinguish common ground between the natural world and the supernatural world. The excerpt is divided into two different sections, Whether, Besides the Philosophical Sciences, Any Further Doctrine Is Required? and Whether God Exists?. In the second section he proves five ways God exists by using Aristotle s technique in philosophy, they are motion, nature of efficient cause, possibility and necessity, the graduation to be found in things, and the governance of the world. The way he words his logic is extremely confusing. For example, Now it is not possible that the same thing should be at one in actuality and potentiality in the same respect, but only in different respects. For what is actually hot cannot ... Blood Transfusion Case Study Every day, the health care system faces many complex and controversial issues that raise unique dilemma and most of the time this dilemma is very difficult to resolve. One of this challenging dilemma is the refusal of blood transfusion by the patient or patient s relatives. Blood transfusion or not is a crucial issue which creates a moral and legal dilemma for the health system; sometimes dealing with such situation takes extra time and energy. The pediatrician should override the patient s decision, the pediatrician should allow the teenager to refrain from treatment or the pediatrician should refer this case to the ethics committee in the hospital. Also, the judgment that is based on the point of view of those who make the decision, who require a decision, or who do not participate in decision making (Figar Đorđević, 2016). In this case, the dilemma arises from religious belief. We are faced with the religious beliefs of the patient who has strong criteria for choosing and decision making and this is the beginning for an ethical dilemma. As we know religious beliefs make decisions challenging, and in the medical community, Jehovah s Witnesses are known for their faith believe. In their view, blood is a gift from God, a representative of life, and holy. Jehovah s Witnesses beliefs with respect to God for giver life and obey him; they should not accept blood even in life threatening situations. • 4. Airport Construction Has A Major Effect On The Community Airport construction has a major effect on everyone involved and also the community around the airport. When an airport begins to make plans for expansion or repairs a whole list of things are researched and planned years in advance. The airport manager is responsible for overseeing the project and confirming that everything goes as planned and everyone stays safe in the process. There are multiple regulations to abide by not only from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), but by the city and the Occupational Safety and Health Association (0SHA). All of these regulations are enforced to help mitigate the risk involved in airport construction. Airport construction is normally short term but whiles it s being performed everyone ... By doing this the airport personnel has to make it right for the people living in these neighborhoods and offer them good compensation to move away from the airport. They also have to think about the businesses around there and how the economy will be effected if those around forced to move. But if the economy will benefit from the construction at the airport in the long run the homeowners and businesses will not have a choice to stay, but once again they will be takin care of. Communities that use roads and highways by airports can be burdened by airport construction because of the increased traffic from construction vehicles hauling equipment and supplies to the airport. A lot of times construction companies have to travel through neighborhoods and other main roads that causes huge headaches for the community. Airport construction also poses a short term but substantial threat to the environment with all the different jobs being done, there are a lot of different construction equipment such as cranes, dozers, excavators, concrete equipment, etc. that can cause problems with the environment. In May 1152, Eleanor subsequently married the future Henry II of England (r. 1154 1189), whose possessions in France and powerful ambition became a source of rivalry and conflict for Louis. His contemporaries, including Odo de Deuil, Stephen of Paris, John of Salisbury, and Walter Map praised Louis VII for his piety and his favorable disposition toward the church. He undertook pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela (1154 55), the Grande Chartreuse (1162 63), and to Canterbury (1179). Because of a disputed papal election, Alexander III sought refuge in France in 1162, where he received Louis s welcome. Louis s protection of Thomas Becket, who had fled to France in 1164 to escape the wrath of Henry II, received widespread approval. Louis asserted his rights over the French church, especially regarding episcopal elections in his realm and control over royal churches. To provide continual support for his royal policies, elections to royal bishoprics often went to members of the king s own household or to families loyal to Capetian interests. • 7. Maryville Slogan Analysis From an outsider s point of view Maryville College may be just a college, but for those who have visited, or even attend, know it is much more. Aside from academics and our covenant, nature is a large part of being a Scot. Nature and Maryville College go hand in hand and everyone on campus knows it. Some schools keep the effect of nature quite subtle, but that simply is not the case, here, at Maryville College. Whether it is the walks between classes and buildings, weekly mountain challenge activities, or the first year orientation you are in it. What is subtle, to at least most freshman, is that Maryville College has a trademark slogan Fit. Green. Happy.™ Fit. Green. According to Bruce Guillaume, head of mountain challenge and FGH, being fit increases the longevity and quality of life. He said life was what you made of it use it or lose it. Using medical technology medical staff and mothers are able to see what happens to the unborn child during the abortion process. A mother can see the image of her unborn child; abortion should be illegal because the unborn child feels pain, there can be medical complications to the mother and alternatives do exist. Women are now able to see inside of the mother s womb and see the unborn child s heartbeat and sex of the child. This is done by ultra sound (US) technology and can be seen in 2 D, 3 D and 4 D it is even possible to see the child in color. The mother can see the living child inside her. The ultra sound serves as a window to the womb (Boucher 2004). Pro life supporters have showmen the US picture and movies of the unborn child to women who are planning to abort their pregnancy and stated that 90% of women have changed their minds. First trimester abortions account for 88.4% of the USA and 73% in Canada. However, the US that is being shown is in the second trimester (Wiebe, Adams 2009) to be able to see the growth of the unborn child. Many states now require that a woman who is going to have an abortion view an US prior to the abortion. Heartburn is that burning sensation one feels spreading across the chest coming up from the pits of the stomach and often reaching the throat and leaving a sour, acidic taste. Heartburn occurs normally after partaking of a huge meal and bending or lying down. These actions result in the acids in the stomach getting pushed into the esophagus, thus the acidic taste. The burning sensation is the result of the esophageal walls reacting to the acid. The Sino Philippine South China Sea Conflict Amy Ly POL 122 30 November 2015 The Sino Philippine South China Sea Conflict Introduction In addressing a long time conflict, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled on 29 October 2015 that it will be holding hearings over a South China Sea territorial dispute filed by the Philippines against the People s Republic of China. The South China Sea has been a region of large dispute over both unresolved island and maritime claims by the People s Republic of China, Republic of China (Taiwan), Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines (Buszynski and Sazlan, 2007). The most recent issues at hand is the PRC s construction efforts in the highly contentious Spratly Islands, or Nansha (南沙群岛) over the past year along with the Philippines case filed with the Permanent Court of Arbitration. In this paper, I will be discussing the historical context and situation, examining the academic and legal responses to the issue, and analyzing the conflict within the international law framework. Because this is a relatively recent development with little to no legal scholarship surrounding the event, my analysis will be limited to news articles and journal articles regarding previous Sino Philippine maritime conflict. Take a few minutes to inspect important aspects of the door, such as the hinges, the latch, and the knob. Questions to ask when inspecting your doors include: Do the hinges move easily or haltingly? Is there any catch in the latch or any trick you need to use to get it open? Does the door handle move easily or with difficulty? Is the door too heavy for weaker employees to move? Does it swing inward, potentially preventing people from escaping in a panic? If the answer to any of these questions is problematic, it may be time to either get your door repaired or replaced. After all, you don t want an inward swinging door dooming your employees to a death by fire. These Storage Spaces lets us combine individual hard disks into storage pools and these can then be managed as a single entity. Storage Spaces is a technology that groups the storage pools and the storage disks which will enable the virtual storage capabilities in Windows and Windows Server (Microsoft Corporation, n.d). The available capacity in the storage pools are then used to create virtual disks which are called storage spaces. The first one is the simple storage layout that has no resilience, meaning it does not have the capability of quickly recovering from the difficulties or the disk failures. This storage layout simply writes the given data into multiple physical disks but doesn t make a clone copy or any information about the parity. This type of layout is a good choice if your requirement doesn t need a backup of data or the disk failure scenarios doesn t affect your requirements. This simple storage layout is a good choice in terms of offering performance for your application if it has its own security essentials. Another type of storage layout is the parity layout which not only writes the data into stripes across the physical disks but also writes the parity information into extra copies. This layout is suitable for the requirements that require maximum capacity with lower writing performances. Example of using the parity layout is while archiving the media and when media streaming requires huge loads. The last storage layout is the mirror layout which is similar to the parity storage layout, but with greater performances when SSDs are added to the storage pool and when the storage tiers are being used. This resilient type writes the data onto multiple physical disks along with making extra copies of the data and offers protection to the data in the events of disk failures. • 14. The Characters Of Coraline And Harry Potter Literary heroes that are also ordinary children are engaging to readers, particularly child readers. James Pope and Julia Round write that Roald Dahl is a fascinating author in that his books for children feature child heroes who are very often neither hero nor villain, but a wild, subversive combination of both (258). These characteristics are also true of Coraline and Harry Potter, as they are presented as imperfect, but ultimately find the power within themselves to save what is important to them. Children readers are empowered by Coraline and Harry because they identify with these ordinary children and feel as if they can also make a difference in their lives, as the characters defeat the evil in theirs. Children are more likely to engage with characters they identify with, but when a character is also a hero, children feel as if they themselves have the power to take agency in their own lives. Coraline is a representation of any child that is easily bored and seeks adventure, but she also displays bravery and heroism. Coraline s greatest strength is her imagination, which she uses to her advantage. Most children have active imaginations as she does, and this quality that they have in common will result in children identifying with Coraline and believing they are just as capable of surmounting obstacles as she is. Coraline is also not perfect, and although many children like to pretend they are perfect, they know they are not. When she loses the marble containing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Use Of Motifs In The Bean Trees Written by Barbara Kingsolver, The Bean Trees contains characters who demonstrate how living creatures are able to find methods of growing and transforming, despite unusual arrangements or lifestyle. Throughout the novel, in the chapters The One to Get Away and Dream Angels the use of motifs are greatly emphasized. Rebirth is one of the two important motifs, as the pattern of life and death is repeated in the novel. Frequently, this theme is connected with dualities: when one member of a pair passes, the other gains life force. The wisteria vines speak to the cooperative connections that predominant the novel, and most importantly, the development of bean trees speaks to the development of Turtle Greer and her development all through the novel. Bean, (128) Turtle s first word, symbolizes the guarantee that, similar to a dried up seed that grows, an emotionally or physically wounded woman may flourish if sufficiently given consideration. The bean trees, another name for the wisteria vine that Turtle spots in Dog Doo Park, symbolize change, a spot of life amidst infertility. The bean trees have a cooperative association with bugs called rhizobia, which climb up and down the wisteria vine s roots and give a system that transfer nutrients. Imagine all of those people who were victimized just because of the color of their skin. The stop and frisk procedure was once a good thing that helped clean up the streets, but now it s becoming an epidemic of racial profiling, and teaching racism and intolerance to anyone who is a victim or witness of these stops. There s no evidence that the stop and frisk is lowering or suppressing homicide rates in NYC. Murders have dropped steadily in 1990, says Chris Dunn, spokesperson for the NYCLU. He s saying that stop and frisks have nothing to do with the drop in homicides, statistics show that in 2002 97,296 people were stopped and there were 587 homicides, the numbers in 2012 were 685,724 and 532. With almost a 600% increase in stops there is no reason that we should only have 55 less homicides. There is a reason though; police are stopping people simply because they re a minority. • 22. Identifying The Search For An Keyword Search Tool A. Email messages A forensic accountant could use a few different techniques to assist in reducing the volume of email messages he or she has to examine. One technique they could utilize is using a keyword search. This is probably the easiest to implement in searching for specific emails. Keyword search tools generally come in two types, indexed or not indexed. An indexed keyword search tool depends on the index that it created in order to actually locate documents having the specific search terms. A non indexed keyword search scans through the document with each search iteration to determine whether the specific term exists. They keyword search will accurately find documents within the search criteria, however the documents may not have any relevance to what the forensic accountant is actually looking for. Therefore, the forensic accountant wants to be sure he or she is utilizing specific key words to find the evidence he or she is looking for. Another method is context search. The context search adds context to the search criteria. Context search helps improve the keyword search solution by addressing the problems present in keyword searches related to synonymy and polysemy. Synonymy is a common linguistic issue where different words are used to express the same concept, and polysemy is where the same word can have different meanings (Fordham, 2013). The context search method combines several advance techniques in a simple user interface, making searches ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He writes, Rhetorical situation may be defined as a complex of persons, events, objects, and relations presenting an actual or potential exigence which can be completely or partially remove if discourse, introduced into the situation, can so constrain human decision or action as to bring about the significant modification of the exigence (6). To put it simply, a rhetorical situation is some response to a certain situation (Bitzer 3). Bitzer also explains that there are three parts to any rhetorical situation: the exigence, the audience, and the constraints. These three components exist before any discourse is created or presented (6.) On July 27th, 2016, Avalon lifeguard Emily Blake sent a message to the other members of the Avalon staff, informing them that she could not work her assigned shift due to other commitments that she needed to attend to. Following Bitzer s definition, Emily s message in response to this complication is a response to a rhetorical situation. We have researched the interrelationship between calories and potassium and this paper is a product of our analysis. We have compared data between the top fifteen cereals and have found that calories and potassium have a negative correlation. However this is only a coincidence as it is other factors, such as sugar, fiber, protein, and fat that correlate most directly to calories, while certain ingredients have more potassium than others. Calories and potassium are both essential parts of the diet that the human body needs in order to survive. A calorie is a unit of energy that measures how much energy the body gets just by eating or drinking it. It is generally thought that the higher the calories, the worse it is for the body. It is thought that way because the extra calories that the body doesn t use is converted to fat, and too much fat is linked to health problems such as arthritis (joint degeneration), heart disease and diabetes. Potassium is an electrolyte (meaning it conducts electricity in the body), it is essential for the proper function of cells, tissues and organs. In the development of Thomas, it was an important gesture for Blalock to give Thomas a white lab jacket. The symbolism of Blalock handing Thomas a white lab jacket strengthened Thomas identity by reinforcing the mission of their shared beliefs. Meaning, Thomas was able to see that he and Blalock shared a common value. The jacket represented the belonging to a team and reflected an institutional acceptance between Blalock and Thomas in the lab. It has been one month since the maritime pirates had come to his place of rule, Kyrenia on the island of Cyprus, and taken what was most loved by the king and by all the kingdom; Callista, Vasilios s only daughter. This abduction had stemmed from a failed marriage arrangement with the prince of Smyrna, a distant land on the Aegean Sea. Callista was not happy with the arrangement and begged her father to stop the deal and let her stay unmarried. Vasilios listened to his daughter and declined the generous offer from the king of Smyrna. The king of Smyrna was enraged by the refusal. He sent a band of pirates disguised as sea traders to capture Callista and bring her back to Smyrna. The ruse worked and Callista was taken. Within relatively recent history of the past 175 years, China has undergone considerable economic shifts including a heavy communist push. Many times, the causation for these events was war. This idea was seen numerous times in ancient China; for example, the Ming treasure ships that were sent out for monetary and military conquest were a result of a naval and military dominance in the Eastern Hemisphere, which allowed them to gain new countries as tributaries with ease. Prior to 1810 Western nations had been spending 350 million Mexican silver dollars on porcelain, cotton, silks, brocades, and various grades of tea, by 1837 opium represented 57 percent of Chinese imports, and for the fiscal period 1835 36 alone China exported 4.5 million silver dollars (England and China: The Opium Wars, 1839 60). This demonstrates how the illegal opium trade largely imbalanced the trade with the West. It was estimated that between four and twelve million Chinese males under the age of 40 were addicted to the use of opium. Tensions grew rapidly following the Kowloon Incident, where drunk British sailors from several opium clipper ships rioted in Kowloon, killing a Chinese man and vandalizing a Buddhist temple (The First and Second Opium Wars). Lin Ze xu, the Emperor s special emissary, ordered the seizure of opium and closing of ports. In response, the British superintendent of trade, Charles Elliot, ordered the blockade of Pearl River, thus initiating the war. Economically, China cut off trade with Britain and the Western nations. This reinforces the idea that they were an isolationist country with respect to trading with the West. The first Opium War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Nanking on August 29, 1842. Some of the most important economic parts of the treaty included, Ceding the island of Hong Kong to Great Britain, opened five Treaty ports to Western trade and residence, and paid nine million dollars in reparations to the ... • 48. Persuasive Essay On Agriculture When you think of the word agriculture farming is probably the first thought that comes to mind. At its most basic element, agriculture is the way in which we produce food, the most basic human need. There is an untold amount of differing opinions on the topic of how we should grow food; smaller family farms being pitted against commercial operations, conventional agriculture against organic practices, and much of the public does not know what side to pick. Agriculture has developed into a highly controversial issue, with each view point claiming that it is the only correct way to farm; despite this, it is imperative that we lay aside our differences in opinion and come together if we are going to create a sustainable food system responsible for feeding 9 billion hungry mouths. By the year 2050, estimates show that over 9 billion people will inhabit Earth, and it is imperative that agriculture finds a way to feed them all. That is about 1.5 billion more people than there are today. One of the biggest dilemmas that agriculture faces is that relatively little more land can be converted into land used for agriculture production, without causing irreparable, detrimental effects to the environment. The damage that this would cause is the subject for another essay, but the bottom line is that it is necessary we produce this food using the land we already have. The only way we can accomplish this is to combine the best practices of organic, or small farms, with those of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Elements Of A Mediterranean Diet Mediterranean Diet The elements of a Mediterranean diet as I have come to know them through my stay here are bread, olive oil, wine, prosciutto, and cheese, along with pizza, pasta, and gelato. However, researchers studying the Mediterranean diet for its health effects would say that it consists of fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereal, fish, and a moderate intake of red wine with meals (Sofi, Cesari, Abbate, Gensini, Casini 337). Foods that are defined as being specifically opposed to the structure of the Mediterranean diet are red, processed meats and dairy products (Sofi, Cesari, Abbate, Gensini, Casini 337).
