FOCUS GROUP
FEEDBACK 1Magazine Design
I proposed three different styles of magazine
cover to my focus group and had them vote on
their favourite. I then asked them what they liked
about it, as I hope that this will provide valuable
information about how I should create my
magazine cover and inside spread.
COVER 1
55% of my focus group said that they
preferred this cover. The distribution of
the results were varied but it was
mostly the younger 16-20 year olds
who preferred this cover.
Some of the reasons for this are:
• "I like the interesting pose and
composition of the cover."
• "I like the plain colours used, with
red being the only brighter colour."
• "The cover is simple with little
writing and focus being on the
model."
COVER 2
This cover was the second most liked
by my focus group. 40% of the group
preferred this cover with a mix of the
older and younger end of the age
range. This means that the range of
people was fairly spread and so this
cover appealed to the whole age
range.
• "I like the close up shot of the
model."
• "The dark colour used for the
background highlight the model and
pronounce her features."
• "I like the plain background."
COVER 3
Only 5% of my focus group liked this
cover. That is only 1/20 people and I
was intrigued as to why. The person
was 26 and female.
• "The bright colours drew my
attention to the cover and the
interesting background made it
different to the other two. It seemed
like a more individual cover than
many that I usually see."
This feedback has been valuable as I have
learned that consumers prefer plain covers
with simple colours and less writing. Busy
backgrounds with lots of writing and bold
colours does not attract that many people.
