First Period Introduction
Teaching very young learners can be amazing and a great experience
if you have not done it before, there are plenty of advantages when getting
in touch with 4 or 5-year-old children. Some of them are:
- They have a great predisposition.
- They have a really good time when learning.
- All you teach and say is new for them.
- They acquire new knowledge very fast.
- Children are always active learners, as they tend to try new things out, ask
questions permanently, process new experiences, and practice several times
a skill until they can master it.
- They have a great ease to acquire a new language.
- They usually do not block theirselves when they need to talk, something
very common among teenagers and adults.
- As they are involved in an active way when learning, they formulate rules
and try out hypotheses instead of just repeating what they hear.
- If they keep training the language until adulthood they can become
bilingual easily.
- They are able to puzzle new vocabulary out for themselves.
Also, there are some things we should bear in mind when teaching
very young learners:
- Their concentration span is brief.
- If you want them to learn effectively, they need to be given concrete
activities.
- Multi-sensory experiences are also fundamental.
- They will understand new learning better if the lesson is set in practical
contexts and also with concrete references.
- They usually understand more than they show.
- It is very difficult to keep them sit still, specially the boys. This is closely
related to the first item: "Their concentration span is brief".
So, as I said before, teaching very young learners can be amazing,
but also a big challenge, we need to focus on their needs, pay attention to
their preferences when learning, and always try to propose interesting
activities, which involve active participation and that stimulate the four
skills in order to get good results.
