INTRODUCTION
MICHAEL HAMMOND ENGINEERING CO. LTD. was incorporated in 1974 as a
wholly indigenous company engaged in the supply, installation and maintenance of
a wide range of mechanical and electrical equipment.
Most of the equipment supplied and maintained by us are protective and
preventive in nature giving added lifespan to our customers’ investments. For
example, UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY SYSTEMS and CLOSE
CONTROL AIRCONDITIONING, protect computers against power outages and
prevent them from environmental hazards, while STABILISERS protect sensitive
electronic equipment from the dangers of power variations.
This is why in the early Eighties we started to propagate the idea of providing
FIRE PROTECTION to our customers, to protect them and their investments
against the dangers of FIRES.

EXTINGUISHING AGENTS
Volume of the room or area
Cause/ Nature of the fire
Contents of area (Flammable objects or materials)
The number of occupants of area
Some agents like Halon 1301 (banned in Montreal Protocol) are toxic to humans,
have adverse effects on the Ozone layer and leave residues that are damaging to
equipment and machinery. Also, conformity with international safety standards
like the Montreal Protocol, NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 have to be made, and
taken into consideration before an appropriate agent can be chosen.
Extinguishing Agents are the gases used to put out fires. Specific agents will be
required for specific hazards, and in order for it to be completely effective
extinguishing agent must-
cause minimal or no damage to any equipment within the hazard area
not have any ill effects on personnel
put out the fire in a minimal amount of time (10 seconds)
The extinguishing agent depending on the following variables:

EXTINGUISHING AGENTS
There are 3 Agents that conform to International Fire Safety Standards and that have been
found to be the best extinguishants, they are;
FM 200
Developed as a Halon replacement, it is the most human friendly clean agent fire protection
for critical facilities. We have designed many systems with FM 200 and our partners Chemetron
have developed an innovative Flow Calculation Software Program to aid us in designing systems
for all applications.
Argonite
Argonite is an inert gas that extinguishes fires based on the principle of oxygen depletion. It
is environmentally acceptable with Zero Ozone Depleting Potential and Zero Global Warming
Potential. There is no residue after discharge and thus not a danger to protected equipment.
Water Mist
Natural, non-toxic and efficient this risk specific agent is a fine spray mist that offers
effective protection without the deluge and damage of traditional water based systems.

ARGONITE
ARGONITE is an inert gas that extinguishes fire based on the principle of oxygen depletion. In a
closed space almost all fires are extinguished in less than 60 seconds when the oxygen
concentration falls below 15%. ARGONITE reduces the oxygen concentration to approximately
12.5%, an acceptable level for human exposure over short periods of time.
ARGONITE extinguishes fire by physically removing oxygen from the atmosphere. In occupied
areas, people can breathe ARGONITE at extinguishing concentrations without fear. There are no
toxicological factors associated with the use of ARGONITE and ARGONITE will not decompose or
produce any by-products when exposed to a flame from a fire condition. It is environmentally
neutral, having zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and zero global warming potential (GWP).

Chemetron FM-200 Fire Suppression Systems work hand-in-hand with state-of-the-
art control and detection components to identify and extinguish fires, long before
substantial fire damage can occur (10 seconds). Without expensive control panels
or detection systems, a unique system can be designed or an existing system
retrofitted to FM-200.
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.

INOX Ambuja Raipur 2
WHY FM 200 IS THE BEST ALTERNATIVE TO HALON 1301
The FM-200 Fire Extinguishant was SPECIFICALLY developed as a replacement for
Halon 1301 and like Halon 1301, FM-200:
•Is delivered as a gas through a network of
pipes.
•Has the same rapid discharge time.
•Offers an improved safety profile.
•Leaves you ready to start operations minutes
after the fire.
Depending upon your unique hazard requirements, retrofitting an existing Halon system may
require anywhere from minor modifications to installing a fully integrated FM-200 suppression
system.
Today more than ever, people around the world are concerned with the effects of humankind on
our earth. FM-200 systems provide a cost effective solution to replacing ozone-depleting
Halon1301 with a fast, safe, and effective fire-fighting agent.
This retrofit capability grows more important as governments around the world
increasingly ban the sale and use of Halon.
•Efficiently stores as a liquid requiring minimal
floor space.
•Performs within the same enclosure design as
Halon 1301.
•Requires no expensive renovations to existing
rooms.
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
Syed Najaf Ali
INOX Ambuja Raipur 2
ADVANTAGES OF FM 200 OVER OTHER AGENTS
The FM-200 fire extinguishing agent is suitable for protecting high-value and mission-critical assets
against most classifications of fire including;
•Ordinary combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and
many plastics. These materials are often referred to as Class A fires.
•Flammable and combustible liquids and gases such as gasoline, oil,
lacquers, paints, mineral spirits, and alcohols. FM-200 extinguishing
concentrations for these fuels are specific and unique to each individual
product.
•Energized electrical equipment. FM-200 is non-conductive making it safe
for use with live electrical equipment. Current international standards
recommend de-energizing high voltage circuits on agent discharge.
FM-200 has no Ozone Depletion Potential. Its ODP is zero. FM-200 has been found by leading
toxicologists to be safe for use when people are present. Unlike Halon 1301, people can be
exposed to normal extinguishing concentrations of FM 200 without any fear of health problems.
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
Syed Najaf Ali
INOX Ambuja Raipur 2
ADVANTAGES OF FM 200 OVER OTHER AGENTS
FM 200 was designed as replacement for Halon systems, therefore keeping installation costs down, as
FM 200 systems can easily be incorporated in existing Halon systems.
A key advantage for the FM-200 extinguishing agent system is the small cylinder storage space
requirement. Floor space in critical sites is usually at a premium and, in some applications, such as
Refineries, Offshore Oil Platforms, Marine Vessels and Small Electronic Facilities, SPACE, WEIGHT, and
STORAGE CAPABILITY IS EXTREMELY LIMITED.
FM-200 is an active fire-fighting agent, requiring only a small quantity of agent to effectively stop the
fire. Most ordinary combustible fires are quickly extinguished with concentrations of only 7% of the
gas, by volume. Additionally, the FM-200 extinguishing agent is stored in the cylinders as a liquid.
Fact: no other commercially available fire suppression system works faster to extinguish fires (in
times of less than 10 seconds) than an FM-200 systems. In performance tests and real-world
applications across the globe, FM-200 fire suppressant has proven its effectiveness:
•Extinguishes ordinary combustible, electrical, flammable liquid and gas fires
•Stops fire without causing collateral damage to equipment, data or other
valuable items
•Approved and accepted by governments, health and safety organizations, and
performance monitoring agencies around the world
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
Syed Najaf Ali
ADVANTAGES OF FM 200 OVER OTHER AGENTS
This saves substantial storage space. Other gaseous fire suppression solutions require much higher
design concentrations, up to 40% by volume. Some agents, such as Argonite, cannot be effectively
stored as a liquid. These agents are stored as high pressure compressed gases and can require up
to seven times the storage space of an FM-200 system.
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
Syed Najaf Ali
INOX Ambuja Raipur 2
UNSEEN DANGERS
FM 200 has no hazardous physio-chemical properties or health effects and it meets
all criteria laid down by Chemical (Hazard Information and Packaging) Regulations
1993.
Unlike Halon 1301, FM 200 has no long term physiological effects on the occupants of the
protected area, during and after flooding.
Occupants who inhale FM 200 will only need to be brought into fresh air, unlike exposure to
Halon 1301, which requires special medical attention to ventilate the lungs.
Eye contact with FM 200 requires the eyes to be simply rinsed with water for 10 – 15 minutes,
and because there in no chlorine in FM 200 there is no pain associated with exposure to it.
A combination of soap and water is all that is needed if FM 200 comes in contact with the skin.
The chemical properties of Halon 1301, make exposure to it dangerous if inhaled for prolonged
periods occupants will lose consciousness due to asphyxiation (suffocation), experience skin
irritations, and severe pain in the eyes.
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
Syed Najaf Ali
ADVANTAGES OF FM 200 OVER OTHER AGENTS
In tests the acute toxity of Fm 200 has been evaluated and approved by the United States Protection
Agency, as a total flooding agent in occupied spaces.
FM 200 is clean, it leaves no residue thereby cutting down after fire cleanup costs and keeps
down time to minimum. Most materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass and other
metals as well as plastics, rubber and electronic components are unaffected by exposure to FM
200.

DETECTION AND SUPPRESSION HARDWARE
Any efficient Fire Detection and Suppression System depends not only on the
Extinguishing Agent but also on the right combination of Fire panels, Smoke or Heat
Detectors, Fire Sensors and Accessories.
Alerting personnel in the event of a fire is also important and is a mandatory statute
in the industries safety standards, hence the need for Strobes, Sirens and Alarm
bells; these as well as strategically placed Manual Extinguishers, Fire Axes and
Fluorescent signs are what make up a COMPREHENSIVE FIRE PROTECTION
SYSTEM.
The smaller the time interval the better, that is why we stock only the most effective,
minimal error sensors and detectors available in the industry.
These are the controls of the system and in essence they are the brains while the
agent is the brawn behind the system. The time interval between the start of the fire
and the detection of the fire will determine how fast the fire can be extinguished and
how much equipment (if any) will be destroyed before the fire is put out.

Even the best fire-fighting agent is ineffective without the right detection package. FM-
200 fast agent discharge, combined with early fire detection, provides maximum asset
protection and limits the production of combustion and decomposition products.

FM 200 INSTALLLATIONS
For an FM 200 to be comprehensively effective a thorough test for leakages known as
an ENCLOSURE INTEGRITY TEST must be carried out. It is this that will determine if,
when the FM 200 is released, it will either escape through minute holes in the wall,
open or cracked windows, gaps in raised floor or false ceiling installations or will
perform its function and extinguish the fire within the design time.
In the late 1980's enclosure integrity testing became the standard acceptance
procedure for approving new clean agent installations in lieu of a discharge test..
NFPA 2001 declares, "a discharge test is generally not recommended…" and
establishes a complete procedure for non-discharge approval testing in Appendix C of
the standard.
The enclosure-testing requirement is to locate any significant air leaks that might
result in a failure of the enclosure to hold the agent concentration for the required
amount of time. One benefit of room integrity testing is the ease of periodic re-
testing to determine if adverse changes have occurred in the protected space, a
common occurrence particularly in electronic and data facilities. Periodic testing can
be carried out at your request
Ambuja Reality Development Ltd.
It is only after an ENCLOSURE INTEGRITY TEST that the
amount of FM 200 needed to protect an area can truly be
determined.
Also periodical tests must be carried out to determine
whether any changes may have occurred, that would affect
the extinguishing capabilities of the FM 200 system.
The FM 200 design engineers must be consulted about any
renovations about to be made within a protected area, this
will enable them to adapt the FM 200 system to suit the
needs of the renovated area, after appropriate integrity tests
have been carried out.

Ambuja Reality DevelopmentLtd. Syed Najaf Ali FM 200 INSTALLLATIONS For an FM 200 to be comprehensively effective a thorough test for leakages known as an ENCLOSURE INTEGRITY TEST must be carried out. It is this that will determine if, when the FM 200 is released, it will either escape through minute holes in the wall, open or cracked windows, gaps in raised floor or false ceiling installations or will perform its function and extinguish the fire within the design time. In the late 1980's enclosure integrity testing became the standard acceptance procedure for approving new clean agent installations in lieu of a discharge test.. NFPA 2001 declares, "a discharge test is generally not recommended…" and establishes a complete procedure for non-discharge approval testing in Appendix C of the standard. The enclosure-testing requirement is to locate any significant air leaks that might result in a failure of the enclosure to hold the agent concentration for the required amount of time. One benefit of room integrity testing is the ease of periodic re- testing to determine if adverse changes have occurred in the protected space, a common occurrence particularly in electronic and data facilities. Periodic testing can be carried out at your request

Ambuja Reality DevelopmentLtd. It is only after an ENCLOSURE INTEGRITY TEST that the amount of FM 200 needed to protect an area can truly be determined. Also periodical tests must be carried out to determine whether any changes may have occurred, that would affect the extinguishing capabilities of the FM 200 system. The FM 200 design engineers must be consulted about any renovations about to be made within a protected area, this will enable them to adapt the FM 200 system to suit the needs of the renovated area, after appropriate integrity tests have been carried out.
