Fire drill report

1. Pre-Announced Fire drill at Power Station during normal working hours
A mock fire drill was conducted on Wednesday 18th
January 2012 at xxxx in the presence
of two Health and Safety Officers.
Shift foreman on duty was informed about a fire outbreak near decantation system at
10.00 am. Fire alarm was raised and the team leader attended the site of fire. Fire services
were also informed by phone.
Below is a summary of the event:
10.01 – team leader assessed the gravity of the fire and gave necessary instructions to the
shift foreman to put out the fire. Alarm was raised and fire services were called.
10.02 – People starting evacuating the building and went to the assembly point together
with the roll call officer.
10.03 – Shift foreman and his team organized to put the equipment in place, i.e. unrolling
and connecting the hoses and fittings.
10.05 – Hoses were connected and hydrant was opened.
10.06 – The team leader was informed by the roll call officer that all personnel in the
station was gathered at the fire assembly point and a team was ready if required.
10.07 – Fire services arrived on site lead. They immediately proceeded to the concerned
region of fire.
10.11 – Fire fighting operation was stopped. Shift foreman and his team joined the
assembly point.

2. Recommendations
1. Keep the entrance clear during the exercise. The Fire Assembly location was
changed.
2. The Roll call officer and the person to make liaison should be two different
persons.
3. At least one First Aider should be present on site.
4. The place where fire alarm was not heard was remedied.
5. To perform a surprise Fire Drill.

3. Conclusion
Fire Drill presents an opportunity for personnel to become familiar with main and
alternate escape routes, emergency procedures and safety considerations. A fire drill
should be carried out at least once a year. Everyone must participate in the fire drill.
During a pre- announced all employees are provided with instructions and training so
that they know what to do in the event of a fire. Every employee, including those on
temporary or short term contracts and others likely to be on the premises must know:
 how to raise the alarm if they discover a fire
 how to contact the fire brigade
 how to use the fire-fighting equipment and in what circumstances
 how to evacuate the building
 where to assemble and who to report to
At least once a year it is also recommended not to announce fire drills in advance so
you get a realistic idea of how effective the fire evacuation plans is.
