CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
Task 1 -
Research
2.4
Task 1 – Research – Web source
• What is Pop Art?
Pop art is made from commercial items and cultural icons such as advertisements and movie stars. It began in the
1950’s but became very popular in the 1960s, it originated in the United Kingdom but became a true art
movement in New York City with artists such as Andy Warhol.
• What are the characteristics?
• Pop art uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. This includes famous celebrities like movie
stars and rock stars, commercial items like comic books and soup cans. There are multiple ways artists use these
items to create art, ranging from changing the colour of the item to repeating the item over and over again.
• Famous Pop Artists
• Keith Haring – New York artist famous for his cartoon like outlined pictures of people doing different things, his
art was inspired by graffiti
• Andy Warhol – Painted the Campbell's soup can pushed Pop Art to the front of the art scene

Inspired by similar subject matter British pop is often seen as distinctive from American pop, early pop art in
Britain was fuelled by American pop culture viewed from a distance, whilst American artists were inspired by
what they saw and experienced living within that culture.

Campbell’s soup can – painted by Andy Warhol, Warhol
made his name by his soup can exhibition in Los Angeles in
1962 at Ferus Gallery. He painted 32 identical soup cans on
a shelf and when asked why he did it he answered ‘I used
to drink it I had the same lunch for 20 years , I guess the
same thing over and over again’

2.3
POP ART by Tilman Osterwald LC on 2nd floor under ‘ART’
I was drawn to this piece because of the really
rough scruffy texture and how the white of the
USA flag had been stained beige, possibly
suggesting that the USA’s purity had been tainted,
for example the Vietnam war and its strong racism.
At first the flag looks old and dirty however if you
look closely you can see the faces of four different
men on the right all wearing black suits, and not as
distinct as viewers would like which gives a sense
of ambiguity.
Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual]
• Nieki – Pop in Latvian
• Vivace – Vibrant in Italian
Task 2a – Idea Generation [group]
MY IDEA: combine the work of
Warhol (coke bottles) with the
work of Lichtenstein ( magazine
type art working with dots) an
exploding coke bottle (glass),
then use the dots as
background.

Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
3.1
I changed my plan from the red background to the blue after trialling
them with different styles and decided that the blue was better. I
changed it because the red background wasn’t what I wanted it to look
like as it was too bright.
I then changed it to multiple coke bottles in the background that
change colours/gradient as it goes along and this is because I think it
looked better than the dotted background as there was too much going
on
Task 2c – Planning
• Blue/red dotted background – inspiration from Roy Lichtenstein
• Coke bottles – inspired by Andy Warhol
• Multiple coke bottles in the background in different colours/change
the gradient
3.2
Task 4 – Production/Final Products
• Include a link to your blog where you have posted this PP and your
final products – the post on your blog should be titled ‘Induction
Week Project’
3.2
3.4
Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved
these
• 1 I struggled with deciding on the original idea of the poster however after
a few tries with using different colours I have decided on the final piece.
• 2 I struggled with copying and pasting images from the internet onto
Photoshop I overcame this by asking for advice.
• 3 I struggled with coming up for an idea that is non digital, I overcame this
by doing a simple design and not overthinking it.
3.3
Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project
• 1 We worked well when designing the original product, and listened
to each others ideas when deciding on a title for the poster
• 2 We helped each other scan items and find things from the ‘pop art’
books for inspiration
• 3 We gave each other constructive criticism on how to improve our
individual posters.
1.2b
Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• My tutor helped by demonstrating how to use different tools on
Photoshop, which I have then incorporated into my final design.
• I then changed the dotted background to multiple coke bottles that
change colours/gradient as it goes along and this is because I think it
looked better than the dotted background as there was too much
going on, and my tutor showed me how to do that
3.5
Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement
• We were given three choices of art to base our work off, Pop art, Op
art and Distijl. And we actively engaged by:
• Bouncing ideas off of each other
• Doing our own individual research then moved onto planning
• Executed the planning and coming up with individual ideas, but with
references that linked the two together
1.2a
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC
• The books I used for my research are located on the second floor LC at the back in the art section
• Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
• To take a book out you take the chosen book to the person at the desk and give them your ID card
2.1
Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where to store electronic information on the college network
• You can store your work on the computer your working on or in your one drive, or your own
memory stick which makes it easier to transfer work from one computer to another
• Explain where you upload work when it is completed
• Upload the completed work to your blogger account
2.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]:
• The way I learn best is visual followed by auditory, so I like working with mind
maps and prefer writing things down
1.1
Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study?
I find it difficult if there is too much noise or when too many people are talking at
once as I find it hard to concentrate, or if the space I am working in is untidy
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
Studying in a quiet space or listening to music as it allows me to focus
