2. Influence: Strong Opinion Sports
Techniques:
For my influences' I will be focusing more on podcasts that are more audio based,
rather than visual. Strong Opinion Sports fits this as Zac Shomler, the presenter and
sole operative of the podcast structures it. He does this by following a list of points to
discuss and when to discuss them. He does not add much of a post- production
element to his podcast apart from a small segment of music for when he announces
that he is going to take a break before returning to talk more. I also thoroughly enjoy
how much detail, attention and research he does to make sure he is correct with the
information that he is relaying.
Inspirations taken:
For my inspiration taken from Strong Opinion Sports, I am mainly going to take the
way he structures the podcast. He does this by telling the audience what subject he
going to talk about just before doing so, he does this for every change in subject there
is within the podcast. This helps the audience understand and closely follow along as
to what is being said. This could also be useful to the audience as it could grab their
attention if they hear that the podcast is about to discuss a subject they are more
interested in. I will also be hoping to recreate the amount of research and effort is put
into the information he is talking about to make sure that what I am discussing and
the information I am relaying, is correct.
Further research I will do:
I will have to do more research on podcasts that are more information based to see
and compare how they prepare to relay information and also have to do more
extensive research into the subjects that I will be discussing than what I originally
planned to make sure that I can keep to the standard of Strong Opinion Sports.
3. Influence: The Joe Rogan Experience
(JRE)
Techniques:
JRE is a great place to take influence from as it is the most successful podcast in the
world, both financially and commercially. This means that there is something that
audience members love and that keeps them coming back for more. A good thing
that the podcast does is create an environment that feels comfortable, this is to do
with the guest, hosts and set. The JRE podcast can be classed as an informative,
comedy podcast which is the genre's I am wanting my podcast to be like but I do
not like some of the aspects of the podcast such as not research points thoroughly
and being incorrect in the information being passed on, this can sometimes be a
recurring theme in the JRE podcast.
Inspirations taken:
For my inspiration taken from the JRE, I can focus more on the comical and friendly
environment aspect, in hopes of keeping audience members listening and wanting
to listen to future episodes, I will not take the laid-back research done and
portrayed within the podcast though as I want to be thorough with my research
done.
Further research I will do:
For further research, I will listen to more JRE podcast's ranging from the early ones
to more recent ones to see what stays consistent, production wise, throughout.
This will help me with my product as these production elements that are prevalent
throughout the podcast's history, are obviously good and liked by the audience so
it may be good to incorporate them into my own project.
4. Motivation
Why do I want to make a podcast?:
Gaining valuable skills- Over the past 2 years of this course, I have gained skills that I
did not possess or have to a high enough level, before joining. This FMP will help me
show off the skills I have learnt throughout the course and show what I can do whilst
also being a place for me develop more skills and expand on some. This will be a place
for me to show all that I have learnt and be done at the highest level I can do.
Correcting previous mistakes- In this FMP, I should aim to fix the problems I have had
with previous projects, this will show how I can learn and adapt from my previous
mistakes.
Challenging myself- As I am going to be organising everything to do with this project, I
am going to have to be professional with my approach to this. For my planning, I am
going to have to be concise with my planning and organisation, especially with how I
am going to lead the team that I am building to be presenters on the podcast with
me.
Working on organisation skills- For this project, I am going to have to be more
organised with my planning and execution than any other project. I have previously
struggled with this when reviewing other projects I have done. This will be a good way
to prove myself that I can do it as it is on a larger scale than previous.
6. League of Legends
My FMP will be about one of the most popular video games in
the world, League of Legends. The game is a top down
Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) where you and
friends can team up against other players to fight and win. I
have had a lot of experience with this game by having played
it for over 6 years, I have sunk many hours into the game and
the community surrounding it due to how much I enjoy the
game. From my experience with the game and partial
involvement in the community, I feel like I am qualified
enough to talk about the game and what revolves it, this is
also the same for my partners that will be accompanying me
for the podcast as they also have played the game for roughly
the same amount of time.
7. League of Legends- Pro scene
The game was released in 2009, and a community slowly
started to form around it, this was due to the
games design and also mechanics. League of Legends was
one of the first games to have a professional scene based
around it where the best players in the world would
create teams and meet other teams to play against each
other to see who the best was. The professional scene in
League of Legends is still growing and also the 2nd biggest
pro scene in the world, only 2nd to DOTA 2. The world
championships is a yearly event towards the end of the
year after many competitions happen throughout the
year to see who can qualify.
8. League of Legends- Community
The community around League of Legends is a very interesting
one as it started with online forums then professional players
began to live stream them playing the game, this helped the
community see and interact with the professionals, making
the community closer. There is also a section of the
community which is known around all gaming
communities for being the most toxic, meaning they are not
nice people and will treat people badly. This fad started in the
European servers and is now the most prominent in the EUW
server. Many people in the toxic community started
streaming leading this style to grow around the world and is
now a mainstay of the game and the community around it.
9. League of Legends- Fortnightly patches
League of Legends has an update every 2 weeks, meaning that
the game changes often and leads to many discussions around
what the company is doing and why they are changing things
such as champions and items. This provides many discussions
to be had about the state of the game and how it will change,
such as meta, which is a massive discussion every 2 weeks as
players all around the world try to find out what the best
item/ champion will provide them a competitive advantage
over their opponents. This is what my podcast will be about
mostly as there is much to talk about in this subject as well as
talking about the community, how they are reacting and if
there is anything of interest happening within it.
10. League of Legends- TFT
There also might be discussion about other things that are linked to
League of Legends such as Team Fight Tactics. This is a game mode in
League of Legends where it is an auto- chess style game meaning you
do not play but choose characters to fight. This game mode has been
out for around 2 years now and has garnered a huge community of
players around it, I have people who will be participating in the
podcast who are big fans of the game mode and if we run out of ideas
of things to talk about, we may be able to fit this in. Although, it is not
a main interest for the podcast, it may be fit in if there is not enough
content that I happy with. This section will be discussed and recorded
during the initial recording of the podcast but has the potential to not
be included in the end product after editing unless, as previously
stated, there is not enough good content when discussing previous
subjects and I do not reach the time I need to fill.
12. Podcasts
I have been listening to podcasts for roughly 4 years, the podcasts I
have listened to have been a mix of many genres, so I know how each
genre works and acts. I am wanting to do an informative podcast with
also comedic elements in it. Due to my experience with listening to
podcasts in both genre’s, I believe that I would be able to achieve this
easily and to an enjoyable element level from both the informative
genre and comedic genre.
Podcasts have been around for years but only as of recent, they have
become more popular due to people’s diversion from more traditional
media such as radio and T.V. Therefore, I believe the media of podcast
is the best for me to do as my target audience is on the younger side
and this will appeal to them more when compared to something such
as an informative video or print piece.
13. Podcasts- Successful Podcasts
Many podcasts have led to being some creator's main income and
even allowed some to become “podcasters” as a full-time job. One of
the most popular and well-known podcasts is the Joe Rogan
Experience, by Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan started his career by being an
actor, then comedian but then went into being an announcer and fight
analyst for the UFC. He has been running his podcast for roughly 11
years now. It is the most successful podcast gaining deals from the big
platforms such as Spotify who now have a contract with him to get his
podcast to only be uploaded on their platform. This is from Joe
Rogan being consistent with his product and being entertaining at the
same time, he also has some very informative sections to his podcast
by getting guests on and discussing theories, Joe Rogan's podcast will
have to be looked at and used as inspiration for what I need to include
in my product as he has great values that I can use.
14. Podcasts- Methods of Recording
Podcasts can be filmed/ recorded in many ways; they can be
filmed which means they have a camera so the audience can
see the people who are talking and their actions. This can be
with the people participating being within the same room and
space but also can be over a video call where the
people record from their camera and edit it in with the audio.
Another way this can be done is also just an audio podcast,
which is the most popular and well-known form, this involves
the person/ persons recording just their voice as they talk
about specific subjects. This is the most popular method as it
is easier and also the most popular method to listen to
podcasts as people want to listen to them whilst doing
something rather than such things as music.
15. Podcasts- How I am going to do it
I will be doing an only audio podcast due to me and participants not wanting to be on
camera and not wanting to set that up. An audio recording is also the easiest method
for us as we are not near each other and do not have the correct equipment to record
efficiently if we were to all be in one place.
A good way for me and the participants to record the audio is for all of us to download
the application “audacity” which is a free audio recording software so we can all,
individually record our voices as I will record the entire call and edit the audio to make
sure it is all lined up and not out of place. I am doing this as the participants recording
their own audio is more beneficial due to the audio being clearer if they recorded it
individually and I am recording the whole call to make sure that I have a framework to
line it all up and make sure it is not out of place, this will increase the production
quality of the podcast. The participants and I will be using the free application, Discord
as a way to be in a call and record our audio, this is because we all use this on a daily
basis to communicate and we are familiar with the application. The audio quality on
this app is also great, helping me with the production and editing section of this
podcast.
