Find JOY in learning!
DECEMBER 2016 CHARACTER EDUCATION LESSON #2
Learning Target
 I can find joy in my personal learning by:
 1. Doing my own work
 2. Having a good attitude & believing in myself
 3. Finding my strengths and interests
 4. Putting forth time and effort
Finding my strengths & interests…
 You can find out your strengths and interests in many ways.
 1. Sometimes you just naturally know by doing what you enjoy, what you like to
do, or what you are good at.
 2.You can learn by taking different types of classes or having different types of
experiences. You may not know that you are good at playing a sport if you don’t
try it or practice it… or you may not know you are creative or artistic if you don’t
take the opportunity to take an art or crafts class or use your creative side.
 3. You can take different personality assessments or profiles to find out more
about your strengths and interests.
Get out of your comfort zone!
 You may be missing out on a big opportunity by not being open-minded about
what you are good at or have strengths in.
 The best thing to do is sign up for a class every year that is new to you… or try
something out just for fun. Do you know how to use tools in the shop? Do you know
how to read music or play an instrument? You might learn some really cool stuff and
develop a new talent!
 Try cooking or baking with a parent or grandparent
 Try babysitting a younger sibling or neighbor
 Help with a community service project
 Try origami or something crafty
Try something new…
 Join a club at school – FBLA, robotics club, (there are MANY more to choose
from in high school!)
 Attend a local scout group or meeting to see what it’s all about
 Go to the library and check out a book and find other resources
 Attend a local art gallery or museum
 Join the track team
 Go to the theater or a school and watch a ballet or a play
 Look up a math tutoring website, like Khan Academy to help you learn a math
concept better
Putting forth time & effort
 Sometimes we want something… but are we willing to put forth the time and effort
it takes to achieve it or accomplish it or work hard to save up enough money to
buy it?
 Anything good worth getting usually takes hard work.
 Consider how much preparation, time, and work people put into being good at
something - a ball room dancer, a tennis player, a cosmetologist. Think about
your future career. Do you want to go to college? How much schooling do you
plan to do after high school? How much is a satisfactory career worth?
 How much do you want to accomplish in something? Do you have any current
plans or goals?
If you fail to plan… you plan to fail!
 Preparation is a MUST!
 As educators, we are constantly trying to help prepare you for what’s ahead. The
knowledge that you gain now will help prepare you for what you will learn next!
 If you are continually planning ahead, the odds that you will get what you want for
your future are much greater… and you can always change your mind and your
plans.
The secret to success…
Remember to find JOY in learning!
 Start practicing these steps and skills now!
 1. Doing my own work
 2. Having a good attitude & believing in myself
 3. Finding my strengths and interests
 4. Putting forth time and effort
