Visit To The Brown Building (Asch Building)
I propose that we visit the Brown Building (originally named the Asch Building). That is because it
was a very important place regarding my topic, labor. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory occupied the
eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of that building, which was well known for its fire proof rooms at the
time. Obviously, this was proven wrong. There was a huge fire in the top few floors of the building,
that could have been caused by many things. But, the results of the fire were grave. Just under 150
deaths were caused by this accident, as well as 71 non fatal injuries. There were some issues with what
happened though. One problem is that a set of exit doors, which could have led the people to safety,
were locked. The doors were locked to ensure

Constitutionality of Stop and Frisk
Abstract
The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution protects one s rights against unreasonable
searches and seizures. It also states that no warrants shall be issued without probable cause. Probable
cause can be defined as a person of reasonable caution who believes that a crime has been committed
and the person accused has committed that crime. Modern law has afforded police officers an
incentive to respect this amendment, known as the stop and frisk act. The Stop and Frisk law allows
police officers to stop someone and do a quick search of their outer clothing for weapons: if the officer
has a reasonable suspicion that a crime has or is about to take place and the person stopped is armed or
dangerous. The reasonable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On October 31, 1963, a Cleveland police detective named Martin McFadden saw two men, John W.
Terry and Richard Chilton, standing on a street corner looking suspicious. One would walk by a
certain store window, stare in, and walk back to the other to confer. This was repeated several times,
and the detective believed that they were plotting to do a store robbery. The officer approached the
men and addressed himself as a policeman, and asked their names. When the men appeared suspicious
in their answers, Officer McFadden patted them down and discovered that both men were armed. He
proceeded to remove their guns and arrested them for carrying concealed weapons. Terry was then
sentenced to three years in prison.
Terry appealed the case, claiming that the guns found should be inadmissible in court proceedings as
evidence since his Fourth Amendment rights were violated. The case was appealed to the Supreme
Court, where it was it was ruled that his rights had not been violated.
In an 8 to 1 decision, the Court held that the search undertaken by the officer was reasonable under the
Fourth Amendment and that the weapons seized could be introduced into evidence against Terry. The
Court found that the officer acted on more than an hunch and that a reasonably prudent

Women In The Early Renaissance
Were Women Given the Chance to Represent Themselves in the Early Renaissance?
Kaylynn Sims
The Renaissance was a large resurgence and what one could consider reboot of culture. During the
Renaissance, the amount of art and culture flourished. At the center of it all, was Florence. To some,
Florence was the birthplace for the Renaissance. Flourishing markets, painters, architects, poets, and
especially humanists, began their origins in the city and around it. As with most places and time
periods in history, the Renaissance was full of economic discrepancies that caused the creation of class
and the difference in political power. Or in other words: Those with the most money had the most
power. To follow suit with most of history, women had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other representations of art, like sculpture and painting were quite popular as well. Rarely were
women the artists of such works, but male artists would often paint the women that they were
surrounded by and usually for the occasion of their weddings in the noble class (Kaborycha, 94 and
95). Depictions of the non elite and servant women were rare, but can be found in Renaissance art. For
example, a non elite, but non servant woman is depicted in a Piero della Francesca painting, titled
Madonna del Parto. She is shown as extremely pregnant, and ready to give birth to her child, because
of the facial expression that is depicted on her face. The woman looks very uncomfortable and tired.
This painting is representative of the role that women primarily took in the Renaissance. Women were
the heir producers. More often than not, it was hoped that the child women were having was a boy, so
that it could pass on the family name (Discussion, February 10). And if the women were to give birth
to a girl, families continued to have children until there was at least one boy. This left some women
pregnant for the majority of their lives. Francesca s painting supports the ideal that Alberti proposed in
Family and Fortune. Most women had children and tended to those children as well as their domestic

Ignatius Jacques Reilly In A Confederacy Of Dunces
Ignatius Jacques Reilly is a beautifully ludicrous character in nearly all aspects of his large nature. At
the very center of the complex interwoven story of A Confederacy of Dunces, is the bizarre Ignatius,
surrounded by a diverse group of odd yet endearing characters. Ignatius and an ensemble of eccentric
characters portray the painful truths of everyday life, such as racial and class inequality, in the most
hilarious way possible. In his journey of absurd misadventures, the grotesque and gluttonous Ignatius,
in turn points out how absurd society looks, looking up and wanting to move up. With the very notion

Ignatius provides a voice for the losers of the world. Not to mention that he is willing to defy the
American ideal that equal opportunity in the United States makes it possible for anyone to achieve
success through hard work. Likewise, he is undaunted in calling out our foolishness and shameless in
bringing light to the inequality and ill treatment of workers that exist in his society. With bed sheets
and fraud, Ignatius attempts to bring justice in strange but amusing of ways, being a true hero for the
social outcast. This is not to say he is without massive flaw, prone to unpleasant behavior and truly a

American porter forced to work below minimum wage, a bar owner whose primary concern is

Nike s Use of Sweatshops Across the Globe Essay
Internationally recognized companies such as Nike make use of sweatshops and aid in the exploitation
of labor workers in many parts of the world. A sweatshop is an industrialized provision that is known
to have poor working conditions, infringement of labor law, and long hours coupled with low wages.
In today s world, sweatshops are prevalent all across the globe; however they raise the most concern
in developing nations. Nike is one of the world s most renowned sportswear companies, but has been
involved in several controversies in relation to the possibility of them making profit out of sweatshop
labor. In the late 1900 s most Nike products were manufactured in countries like South Korea and
Taiwan, however, this changed when the labor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a company, Nike is extremely profitable; it is the biggest shoe company and has become the fourth
biggest industry leader. Nike can easily afford to increase wages of people that do labor work for the
company without even the slightest loss but unfortunately chooses not to. According to the SEC, In
2007, Nike s advertising budget was $678 million. Realistically, Nike could pay all its individual
workers enough to feed and clothe themselves and their families if it would just devote 1% of its
advertising budget to workers salaries each year! (A background on...) In Nike s Code of conduct, they
state that in the area of human rights and in the communities in which they do their business, they
want to do everything required of them as well as what is generally expected of a leader and thus by
magnifying on the wrongs an industry leader commits, changes in the entire industry is expected.
Sweatshops greatly impact the lives of people all across the world; people are forced into incredibly
tough labor along with unbearable working conditions. According to the writer of English Blog, 22
million children die annually due to the hazardous conditions in the sweatshops. (English Blog RSS)

Case Study On Slip House
Project Title: Slip House
Architect: Carl Turner (Of Carl Turner Architects)
Clients: Carl Turner and Mary Martin
Completion: 2012
Location: 51A, Lyham Road, Brixton, London, SW2 5DS, UK. The house can also be found through
its coordinates: 51.456711, 0.128318 .
The house was built in a traditional Victorian area in Brixton, but the building itself is far from a
classic Victorian design. Slip House gets its name as it is made up of three simple slipped orthogonal
boxes. This building was chosen because it is recognised as one of the best designed private houses of
2013, as well as being one of the most eco friendly, sustainable homes in the UK to date. Slip House
has been the recipient of, and shortlisted for, a number of awards in both 2012 and 2013. What puts it
ahead of its time is its mix of energy efficient credentials, making a highly desirable model for a
family terrace home that is almost energy bill free.
Minimalistic mentalism along with the desire for flexibility were to key factors in the design on the
building. The building is divided up into three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

design from the outset. In fact the building was such a success that Carl Turner Architects have
expanded by beginning to construct a second building on a site beside Slip House which still conforms
to the sustainable ideas of the original. Also the firm are expanding from their comfort of working
with private buildings and are in discussions with housebuilders about plans to build a terrace of
houses based on the slip house as a prototype

Lord Of The Flies Man Vs Society
Conflicts between Society
Most people don t listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply (Covey). In
other words, there are many conflicts in the world that drives people and things to respond with
physical and mental actions. Few actions can be harmful towards anyone and could potentially
increase the difficulty of resolving the conflict. However, with many types of conflicts in real world
problems and literature, many become a prime example of what the human or thing is capable of and
soon becomes resolved. In the novel, The Lord of The Flies, written by William Golding; man vs.
man, man vs. society, and man vs. self, are the conflicts between children that simulate the battles in
mankind.
The conflict of man versus man has been a prominent conflict for many years between humans
throughout current and past problems. These conflicts are built up from the thoughts and emotions that
each human possesses inside the mind that expresses their humanity. In the novel, Golding writes, He
s not a hunter. He d never have got us meat. He isn t perfect and we don t know anything about him
(Golding 98). Jack s rant is a primary example of how humans can be overwhelmed by jealousy
towards the other s power and breakout with atrocious manners and actions. This emotional burst
demonstrates the jealousy that many individuals and organizations seem to encounter once they realize
they don t have greater power than the opposing person or organization.

Essay about The US Embargo on Cuba
The U.S. imposed an Embargo against Cuba on Oct. 19, 1960. Has the time come to the United States
to lift the five decade embargo? The Embargo was a part of America s Cold War strategy against the
Soviet Union, imposed on the belief that Cuba was a threat to the U.S. since the Soviet Union was a
danger to the National Security because of its alliance with the Soviet Union. Although Cuba would
like the U.S to terminate the embargo against their country, the U.S. wants Cuba to make their
situation a better living environment and to promote human rights for its citizens before any sanctions
are removed. The Cuban Embargo, also known as el bloqueo to Cuban citizens, was declared by the

Eisenhower instituted a ban on nearly all exports to Cuba, and then President Kennedy expanded into
a full economic embargo that included stringent travel restrictions. In 2000, President Bill Clinton
signed the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act, which allowed the U.S. to send
medicine and humanitarian supplies to the Cuban people. Independent Non Governmental
Organizations (NGO), Catholic Churches around the nation, and an international organization Pastors
of Peace distributed the aid. According to IFCO/Pastors for Peace in 2011, a caravan cargo of nearly
100 tons of humanitarian aid arrived in Cuba at the 20 anniversary (Caravan).
U.S. wanted Cuba to meet special requirements in order for the embargo to go into effect, including
rules such as: transition to a democracy, demand Havana support small businesses in exchange for
sheathing restrictions on remittances, denounce presence of either Fidel or Raul Castro in Cuban
government, better living conditions for all Cuban citizens, absolutely no travel to Cuba, and promote
human rights. Cuba has not yet met all requirements, but is currently working on them. Obama
reversed some of these polices, such as, allowing U.S. citizens to send remittances to non family
members in Cuba and travel under license of religious or educational purposes. As of today United

to adapt to various changes such as different mission statements; and communication amongst staff
members and leadership styles. For example PRMC cooperate managers made all of the policy and
other management decisions; versus BRMC who was participative of their staff.
The role in this case study will be Pat Herman, MHA, FACHE. He was the CEO of PRMC and was
voted on by the commissioners to hire Herman as the CEO for the new Portsmith Regional Medical
Center. He has the past experience as well as the current potion to make changes necessary to have a
successful merger.

Herman is familiar with MHC and was CEO of PRMC. Miller has experience with mergers and
acquisitions. Herman is planning a executive and board retreat to plan strategic moves. This is not for
another 2 months, hopefully Herman uses this time to do a SWOT analysis to present to the board.
Difficulties in doing this include many unknowns since there is not a solid history of Portsmith
Regional Medical Center to rely upon. He will have to look at combined key financial indicators and

Scientology Going Clear
In Response to Alex Gibney s Going Clear HBO hired 160 precautionary lawyers prior to the
production of Going Clear, the explosive documentary produced by Alex Gibney that aimed to expose
tightly kept secrets and beliefs of the Church of Scientology. Undeniably controversial, perhaps what
Going Clear does best is gather testimonies of ex church members and officials that give the viewer an
inside look into the church s practices and deep ties to Hollywood stars. In addition, Going Clear
attempts to explain the roots and core beliefs of the church, placing strong emphasis on the peculiar
life of it s founder L. Ron Hubbard. With the copious amount of shocking information made public by
Going Clear, judgements on Scientology s emergence as a world religion are relevant as ever. To
effectively evaluate Scientology and it s inclusion on the world stage, one must first look back to the
roots and beliefs of other world religions and draw comparison. By contrasting Scientology with other

What Is The Theme Of The Sign Of Four
The sign of four is a novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. It was written in 1888. The plot of the
novel talks about a number of topics such as murder, hidden treasure, a pact among four persons and
corrupt prison guards. As a result, we can conclude that it is a detective novel. However, the novel
tries to talk about India which was one of the British colonies. In this novel, there is much focus on the
Indian Mutiny that happened in 1857. The sign of four is also a novel about the Victorian abroad. The
strangest thing about this novel is that it was written by an author who had never been to India and
was born after the events of the Indian Mutiny that happened in 1857. The author got his information

Some people may consider it as a mutiny story since it focuses in many on its events on the Indian
mutiny taking place in 1857. The strangest thing about this story is that its author tries to talk about
the events of the Mutiny despite the fact that he did not attend them. Although the Indian Mutiny
facilitated the formation of societal anxieties within Britain, The Sign of Four suggests that late
nineteenth century British society continued to consider the colonies as attractive possessions. Doyle s
portrayal of India as an alluring and exotic milieu is characteristic of popular nineteenth century
colonial conceptions, as many Western artists and poets often romanticized the behaviors and
environments characteristic of Oriental nations. Evidence of the exotic and sensual appeal of the

Three Major Factors Of The European Colonies In The New World
Beginning in the 17th century, European settlers began migrating and colonializing the New World
discovered by Christopher Columbus, centuries earlier. The process of colonialization was brutal, it
sparked native resistance, and overtime, created tension with Europe. There were several differences
between the colonies that were established. However, the motivation to colonialize the New World
remained the same for most colonies. Three major factors contributed to the beginning colonies in the
17th century; God, gold, and glory. Many issues were rising in Europe, including religious intolerance.
Citizens were not free to worship whatever they pleased, they had to abide by the rules and laws of the
Church. Political instability, and economic developments were also contributing factors to emigration.
The promise of new gold and new trade also sparked interest amongst rulers. Recordings from earlier
periods revealed new jewels that the Indigenous People owned. The small amount of writing from this
period also suggests that rulers thought of new trade possibilities. Of course, the biggest factor was
glory. Spain, Portugal, France, Britain, and other countries were constantly trying to compete for
dominance. The thought of new territory to conquer and claim in the New World sparked major
emigration. Global dominance and power was a goal that Europeans had in mind, and the New World
was the promise land. English colonies could be categorized in three groups; royal colonies,

Several potential solutions to combat against desertification may include initiatives such as a)
education in teaching sustainable practices helping farmers/residents to understand how to best use the
land, b) technology advancements using research and awareness in finding new and improved
methods towards prevention c) policy changes relating to how people can farm and how types of lands
are governed and d) rehabilitation efforts to restore the land that has already been affected. The focus
on global drylands is shifting from an emphasis on negative images of desertification to a more
forward looking perspective concerning human livelihoods, based on interactions between and among
human activities and natural world processes. (Reynolds et al. 2007) The Drylands Development
Paradigm represents a convergence of insights and key advances drawn from a diverse array of
research in desertification, vulnerability, poverty alleviation, and community development. (Reynolds
et al. 2007)
A new model has been introduced which includes a set of strategies that has been developed to reduce
soil erosion by planting vegetation in desertification hotspots. The model reproduces a wide range of
patterns observed in water limited regions, including drifting bands, spots, and labyrinths. It predicts
transitions from bare soil at low precipitation to homogeneous vegetation at high precipitation,
through intermediate states of spot, stripe and hole

Models From Simple Random And Complex Survey Designs
Models (GLM) to data from simple random and complex survey designs. This program supports a
range of sampling distributions including Gaussian, inverse Gaussian, multinomial, binomial, negative
binomial, Bernoulli, Poisson, and gamma. The last program, MAPGLIM can be used to fit GLM
models to the multilevel data. Each of these programs can function as stand alone program.
To estimate a model with missing data, LISREL by default uses the full information maximum
likelihood (FIML) approach. However, users may also opt to impute missing values using either
expectation maximization or Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Beginning with version 9.10,
LISREL will automatically provide robust estimation of standard errors and chi square statics if a raw
file is used as a data input. The default estimation method in LISREL is Maximum Likelihood (ML)
even if an estimated asymptotic covariance matrix is provided, but the users may override the default
when setting up the model.
Together, the LISREL 9.2 package makes possible estimations of a wide range of statistical used in
educational research, such as exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA and CFA) with
continuous and ordinal variables, multiple group analysis, multilevel linear and nonlinear models,
latent growth curve models, and generalized linear models (GLM) to complex survey data and simple
random sample data (Byrne 2012; Sörbom 2001).

The Importance Of Physical Similarity
An old saying states that birds of a feather flock together. It can be quite comforting to meet someone
who is similar to yourself. Like minded individuals not only validate our beliefs about the world, but
also reduce the risk of conflicts and disagreements (Barelds Barelds Dijkstra, 2007, p. 479). In fact,
research has shown that people are more likely to be in relationships with others who are similar to
themselves in terms of attitudes, values, social group memberships, and physical appearances than
with dissimilar others (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Physical Similarity A study
conducted by Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson (2011) examined how seating preferences are affected by
physical similarity in strangers. The researchers proposed that people would sit closer to physically
similar others even when those physical similarities are unrelated to important markers of social
status, such as sex and race. The study states that without the opportunity to interact facilitated by
physical proximity, a relationship is less likely to form (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879).
Across 4 studies, it was found that people tend to sit closer to physically similar others than physically
dissimilar others. Study 1 revealed significant aggregation in seating patterns on two easily observed
characteristics: glasses wearing and sex. Seating arrangements at a Canadian university on campus
computer lab with 31 seats was observed on 21 (non overlapping) occasions over 3 months. Using a
seating diagram, the researcher recorded whether a person occupied each seat. In total, 356 individuals
were observed; 23% were wearing glasses (N = 82) and 57.6% were women (N = 205). This shows
that, as predicted, glasses wearers sat by other glasses wearers (and non glasses wearers by other non
glasses wearers) more frequently than expected by chance alone. Study 2 replicated this finding with a
wider variety of physical traits: race, sex, glasses wearing, hair length, and hair color. In the second
study, 18 university classes (freshman and sophomore level) were observed. Three large classrooms at
a Canadian university were chosen, and professors who taught courses in those classrooms were
emailed for permission to

Women Of The Elizabethan Society
Women of the Elizabethan society, such as in Shakespeare s Othello, are particularly not considered as
equal. Women were more often seen as less of people who need to be helped and aided by man. This
ideology was spread by both men and women of that time by them playing into the gender roles of
male and female. Othello gives a relative example of the male and female ideology being accepted and
spread throughout society in the Elizabethan age. With it only being three women in the play,
Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca and then the rest of the members being male species, it is difficult to
not come across gender issues. There are many expectations of women as well as roles that they
acquired back in the Elizabethan society. Firstly, women were treated as objects of possession towards
men. For example, when the duke had decided to give permission for Desdemona to escort Othello to
Cyprus. Othello speaks to Iago, coincidentally relating to him as a man of honesty and trust ,
informing the Duke that To his conveyance I assign my wife (I.3.283). Desdemona, being as Othello s
wife, is treated as his possession and it is implied that she is a like a commodity to be guarded and
transported. Later, the first Senator, send farewell wishes to Othello, concludes by hoping that Othello
will use Desdemona well (I.3.288). The word use seems to suggest that women are indeed looked at as
objects which also supports the Venetian expectation of women. That they are to obey the wills of

Cultural Ethical Relativism
Ethical relativism is a theory based on the belief that there are no general standards that are considered
to be ethically acceptable. Ethical relativists believe that there is no actual standard of what is right or
wrong. The two forms of ethical relativism are personal, or individual ethical relativism and cultural
ethical relativism. Personal relativism, also called individual relativism, is based on the belief that
ethical opinions are manifested by the moral viewpoints of each individual. Personal relativists believe
that because there is no specific right or wrong, no specific opinion is considered reasonable or
unreasonable. Everybody has had their own experiences throughout their lives, which has contributed
to how their beliefs are formed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Opinions are based on the beliefs of each individual culture. Individuals in each society should focus
on the rules and customs within their society in order to make the right decisions. Cultural ethical
relativists believe that one society s views and opinions are not better than any other, even if the views
are completely different in opinion. I do not believe that relativism would work as a universal theory.
Everybody has their own morals and beliefs. What one individual believes is right may be completely
different from what another individual might believe. Relativism may work as a universal theory
within certain cultures and societies but not likely among individuals. There are certain cultures that
share the same customs and beliefs but individuals from different cultures may have completely
different views of what is right or wrong. Supporters of ethical relativism believe that there is no

Cardiovascular System Vs Respiratory System Essay
The human body is not simply just an organism, or just body. The body is comprised of many different
systems. Although these systems all work together with one common goal, to maintain homeostasis,
perhaps there are not two systems that work more closely together than the respiratory system and the
cardiovascular system. Although the entirety of each body system has a generalized common goal,
these two systems share a relationship. The both focus on providing oxygen to the blood, and then
ensuring that this richly oxygenated blood is circulated throughout the body. The whole human
organism would fail if it lacked just one of these systems, and the individual systems would fail
without each other. To fully understand how the two work together, one must fully realize the
functions of each system apart. The respiratory is not one of the biggest systems of the body, but it is
one of the most commonly known. However, this system is not simply for breathing or the lung
system . In fact, these notions only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two most significant to the coexistence of both systems being the pulmonary artery and
pulmonary vein. The pulmonary artery carries the blood lacking in oxygen into the lungs (Bailey).
From there, the oxygen from the air sacs goes into the blood vessel, while the carbon dioxide comes
out (How Does Oxygen Get Into the Bloodstream) . Upon this moment, the organism exhales
releasing the carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, the now oxygenated blood travels throughout the body,
which especially important for the muscles. Oxygen is required for the muscles to preform any sort of
strenuous activity. Faster paced breathing and an elevated heart rate aren t random symptoms of a
good work out. The blood must quickly transfer oxygen to the muscles. This is so that the muscles
have the ability to create adenosine tri phosphate (ATP) which carries

Interpretation And Comparison Of Online Digital Objects
ACC100
Delwyn Johns
Assessment One: Interpretation and comparison of online digital objects.
*PLEASE NOTE: As I was unable to find both of these scenes by themselves online, I have
transcribed where they occur in their larger bodies and have attached screenshots that directly relate to
my points.
OBJECT ONE: Projector Scene from the episode Hush, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, occurring
approximately 27 minutes in.
I have chosen to scrutinize this particular scene as its complete lack of dialogue allows us to closely
examine how non verbal communication is used to convey meaning. Nonverbal communication
between people is communication through sending and receiving wordless cues (Stephen W.
Littlejohn 2009). When we consider that Individuals are believed to use clothing to define and
communicate their social identities to others (Fienberg 1992), we can attach a wealth of information to
the onscreen characters simply from observing their costumes. Giles blazer allows him to be viewed
as authoritative and mature; Buffy s fashionable outfit is synonymous with her popular status, whilst
Xander s sports Guernsey and sneakers underpin his casual, outgoing persona. The director of the
show uses the
style, branding, colour and fashionability of the clothing as a tool for the audience to
assess their personality traits (Chalky et al, 2012).
Non verbal communication within this scene also manifests itself via kinetic transmission; that is,
posture, eye contact and the

Essay on Benny Goodman, King of Swing
Benjamin David Goodman was born in Chicago on May 30, 1909, the ninth of twelve children born to
David and Dora Goodman, who both emigrated from Russia but met in America.
David Goodman eked out a minimal living for his family by working for a tailor in a sweatshop. To
help alleviate the family s poverty, the children were urged to work as soon as they were old enough.
For entertainment, David would take his youngest children to Douglas Park on Sundays to hear free
band concerts. It was here that he first heard of the Kehelah Jacob band. Lessons were given for one
quarter at the Kehelah Jacob synagogue. David Goodman enrolled his three youngest sons with the
hopes that one day, their music would lift them out of poverty. It was here ... Show more content on

This led to his first professional gig in 1921 in a vaudeville show at Central Park Theater.
In 1923, at the age of 14, Benny Goodman left school to play with local bands, including Bill Grimm s
riverboat orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke. There is an interesting anecdote about Benny s first meeting
with Bix. One day, Benny received an emergency call from Grimm, asking him to fill in for Grimm s
clarinetist, who was ill. Benny arrived early in the day at the dock where the boat on which he was to
perform was moored. Benny stepped onto the bandstand and immediately heard a shout to get off
there, kid! Stop that fooling around! (Benny Goodman, 1979) Benny turned to see a fellow about four
or five years older, holding a trumpet and staring disdainfully at Benny. That fellow, Bix Beiderbecke,
did not want to hear any explanations from this young kid in knickers. However, Bill Grimm arrived
before any trouble could start and introduced the boys. The young men hit it off and much fun and
great music stemmed from that first session together.
At that same time, Benny and his high school friends had earned the nickname,
The Wild West Side Mob , not for their behavior, but because of their free, ragged, style of jazz. While
this style made them great jam session musicians, it made it difficult for them to find work. Hot jazz
was not in demand. Nevertheless, Benny s ability to play cool, sweet jazz on demand ensured that he

Elizabeth Bennet Deception
Love: Deception for Two
Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice clearly struggles with admitting her affection.
Elizabeth maintains a stereotypical image that affiliates wealthy people with arrogance, lack of
compassion, and insolence. She is never impressed with Mr. Darcy because she is too proud to admit
she was wrong. Essentially, Elizabeth s pride and prejudice stand in between her one chance at love.
Elizabeth and Darcy must avoid and surmount numerous differences in order for their relationship to
survive. For example, Darcy and Elizabeth need to overcome the faltering blocks of their ego and
bigotry. During their first encounter, Darcy s prejudice against Elizabeth s social standing blinds him
to her many virtues, She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Elizabeth believes that Wickham was a possible suitor based on their first encounter;
however, he turns out to be her worst nightmare, hence his name. She believes Wickham is as far
beyond [the other offices] in person, countenance, air, and walk, as they were superior to the broad
faced, stuffy uncle Phillips, breathing port wine, who followed them into the room (Austen 77). Also,
he lures Elizabeth immediately by describing Darcy as an immoral person. Only after Darcy has
cleared up his name and pointed out the evil in Wickham, that Elizabeth realizes that she has been
played. Hindsight, Wickham s manners were actually bad: She was now struck with the impropriety of
such communications to a stranger [...] She saw the indelicacy of putting himself forward as he had
done, and the inconsistency of his professions with his conduct (Austen 202). Thus, Wickham is the

The impact of global financial crisis on the United Kingdom
Introduction
This report will examine the affects of the global financial crisis, which was a result of the collapse of
the sub prime mortgage market in the United States, on the UK economy. First of all, it will look at the
background of the global financial crisis. Secondly, this paper will analyses why the UK economy has
been influenced by the global financial crisis, what effects of the financial crisis on the United
Kingdom have been, especially labour market. Lastly, brief conclusions will be drawn and a number
of recommendations will be made.

Thus, when interest rates rose in 2007, most of banks could not put cash back because more and more
homeowners with mortgages were forced to default, and they also could not borrow money from
wholesale market because others were involved in the same situation. Lastly, although Bob Bennett,
the finance director, said the credit crunch that was obviously coming should have led to more
restrained [mortgage] volumes. in February 2007, managers of banks did not believe that rising
interest rates would affect lending (Brummer, 2008, p.10).
Moreover, another reason is the changing of the UK economic structure. From 1945, significant
sectors were run by the state, because the Labour Government stated that the economy must be
centrally managed. However, it was a big challenge for the local government to run them efficiently
because of a limited budget. In order to solve this problem, Conservative governments transferred
some state industries to private sectors from 1979 to 1997. After that, the Labour Government also
accepted privatization. Nowadays, there is a free market economy in the United Kingdom (Oakland,
2006). That means the UK government plays a neutral role in its administration and legislation of
economic activity. It was so difficult for companies, especially for the private sector, to deal with the
negative effects of the global financial crisis of 2007 2008. Furthermore, It is no wonder that the UK
government should take

Fossil Fuels And Renewable Energy Essay
Finding energy sources is an issue that polarizes scientists, politicians and citizens alike. The most
critical points of this debate are at fossil fuels and renewable energy. Energy efficiency is arguably the
most dire concern facing the planet, because it significantly impacts all areas of everyday life.
Common ground can be found in this controversy because both parties do agree that humans have a
responsibility to future generations. That responsibility is to preserve the resources of the Earth, while
offering this generation energy that is affordable and accessible.
Many people contend that fossil fuels, while being the most cost effective source of energy, have
detrimental effects on the environment. Others argue that fossil fuels have little negative
environmental impact and that producing alternative energy is too economically prohibitive to be
feasible. In 2010, the Gallup Poll conducted a national poll that found half of the Americans surveyed
favored expanding energy production via fossil fuels even if it harms the environment. This was the
case in nearly every major demographic subgroup, although self identified liberals remained constant
in supporting environmental protection as the higher priority (McDermott).
Of these two types of energy production, fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal make up about ninety
percent of the world s energy usage. Nuclear power takes up five percent of this equation, with the
remaining renewable energy resources splitting

Justice In Dante s Inferno
Renowned poet Dante Alighieri lived in a tempestuous political and religious era. Fourteenth century
Italy was riddled with political factions, most notably the Guelphs and Ghibellines, which were
constantly engaged in conflict. This ongoing political and religious upheaval would eventually lead to
Dante s exile from Florence. After his banishment, Dante wrote The Divine Comedy, an epic poem
that sets up a flawless system of punishment, redemption and salvation. This retributive structure,
most readily apparent in the Inferno , heavily contrasts with the imperfect earthly one that failed
Dante. Although the primary message of the poem appears to be religious, the Inferno gives insight
into how Dante was making an inherently political statement. ... Show more content on

The Black Guelphs came about from treachery in the form of a White cutting themselves off from the
rest of the faction and joining up with the religious fanatics who supported the corruption of the
church (Browning 54). Treachery was also one of the charges filed on Dante in his absence, due to the
fact that he supposedly stole money for his own personal gain (Harrison 2). Dante s harsh
condemnation of traitors of any nationality or religion may be seen as his way of attempting to prove
that he would never commit an act that

  • 2. Visit To The Brown Building (Asch Building) I propose that we visit the Brown Building (originally named the Asch Building). That is because it was a very important place regarding my topic, labor. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory occupied the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of that building, which was well known for its fire proof rooms at the time. Obviously, this was proven wrong. There was a huge fire in the top few floors of the building, that could have been caused by many things. But, the results of the fire were grave. Just under 150 deaths were caused by this accident, as well as 71 non fatal injuries. There were some issues with what happened though. One problem is that a set of exit doors, which could have led the people to safety, were locked. The doors were locked to ensure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Constitutionality of Stop and Frisk Abstract The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution protects one s rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. It also states that no warrants shall be issued without probable cause. Probable cause can be defined as a person of reasonable caution who believes that a crime has been committed and the person accused has committed that crime. Modern law has afforded police officers an incentive to respect this amendment, known as the stop and frisk act. The Stop and Frisk law allows police officers to stop someone and do a quick search of their outer clothing for weapons: if the officer has a reasonable suspicion that a crime has or is about to take place and the person stopped is armed or dangerous. The reasonable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On October 31, 1963, a Cleveland police detective named Martin McFadden saw two men, John W. Terry and Richard Chilton, standing on a street corner looking suspicious. One would walk by a certain store window, stare in, and walk back to the other to confer. This was repeated several times, and the detective believed that they were plotting to do a store robbery. The officer approached the men and addressed himself as a policeman, and asked their names. When the men appeared suspicious in their answers, Officer McFadden patted them down and discovered that both men were armed. He proceeded to remove their guns and arrested them for carrying concealed weapons. Terry was then sentenced to three years in prison. Terry appealed the case, claiming that the guns found should be inadmissible in court proceedings as evidence since his Fourth Amendment rights were violated. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court, where it was it was ruled that his rights had not been violated. In an 8 to 1 decision, the Court held that the search undertaken by the officer was reasonable under the Fourth Amendment and that the weapons seized could be introduced into evidence against Terry. The Court found that the officer acted on more than an hunch and that a reasonably prudent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kaylynn Sims The Renaissance was a large resurgence and what one could consider reboot of culture. During the Renaissance, the amount of art and culture flourished. At the center of it all, was Florence. To some, Florence was the birthplace for the Renaissance. Flourishing markets, painters, architects, poets, and especially humanists, began their origins in the city and around it. As with most places and time periods in history, the Renaissance was full of economic discrepancies that caused the creation of class and the difference in political power. Other representations of art, like sculpture and painting were quite popular as well. Rarely were women the artists of such works, but male artists would often paint the women that they were surrounded by and usually for the occasion of their weddings in the noble class (Kaborycha, 94 and 95). Depictions of the non elite and servant women were rare, but can be found in Renaissance art. For example, a non elite, but non servant woman is depicted in a Piero della Francesca painting, titled Madonna del Parto. She is shown as extremely pregnant, and ready to give birth to her child, because of the facial expression that is depicted on her face. The woman looks very uncomfortable and tired. This painting is representative of the role that women primarily took in the Renaissance. Women were the heir producers. More often than not, it was hoped that the child women were having was a boy, so that it could pass on the family name (Discussion, February 10). And if the women were to give birth to a girl, families continued to have children until there was at least one boy. This left some women pregnant for the majority of their lives. Francesca s painting supports the ideal that Alberti proposed in Family and Fortune. Most women had children and tended to those children as well as their domestic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In other words, there are many conflicts in the world that drives people and things to respond with physical and mental actions. Few actions can be harmful towards anyone and could potentially increase the difficulty of resolving the conflict. However, with many types of conflicts in real world problems and literature, many become a prime example of what the human or thing is capable of and soon becomes resolved. In the novel, The Lord of The Flies, written by William Golding; man vs. man, man vs. society, and man vs. self, are the conflicts between children that simulate the battles in mankind. The conflict of man versus man has been a prominent conflict for many years between humans throughout current and past problems. These conflicts are built up from the thoughts and emotions that each human possesses inside the mind that expresses their humanity. In the novel, Golding writes, He s not a hunter. He d never have got us meat. He isn t perfect and we don t know anything about him (Golding 98). Jack s rant is a primary example of how humans can be overwhelmed by jealousy towards the other s power and breakout with atrocious manners and actions. Although the Indian Mutiny facilitated the formation of societal anxieties within Britain, The Sign of Four suggests that late nineteenth century British society continued to consider the colonies as attractive possessions. Doyle s portrayal of India as an alluring and exotic milieu is characteristic of popular nineteenth century colonial conceptions, as many Western artists and poets often romanticized the behaviors and environments characteristic of Oriental nations. The process of colonialization was brutal, it sparked native resistance, and overtime, created tension with Europe. There were several differences between the colonies that were established. However, the motivation to colonialize the New World remained the same for most colonies. Three major factors contributed to the beginning colonies in the 17th century; God, gold, and glory. Many issues were rising in Europe, including religious intolerance. Citizens were not free to worship whatever they pleased, they had to abide by the rules and laws of the Church. Political instability, and economic developments were also contributing factors to emigration. The promise of new gold and new trade also sparked interest amongst rulers. Recordings from earlier periods revealed new jewels that the Indigenous People owned. The small amount of writing from this period also suggests that rulers thought of new trade possibilities. Of course, the biggest factor was glory. Spain, Portugal, France, Britain, and other countries were constantly trying to compete for dominance. • 23. The Importance Of Physical Similarity An old saying states that birds of a feather flock together. It can be quite comforting to meet someone who is similar to yourself. Like minded individuals not only validate our beliefs about the world, but also reduce the risk of conflicts and disagreements (Barelds Barelds Dijkstra, 2007, p. 479). In fact, research has shown that people are more likely to be in relationships with others who are similar to themselves in terms of attitudes, values, social group memberships, and physical appearances than with dissimilar others (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Physical Similarity A study conducted by Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson (2011) examined how seating preferences are affected by physical similarity in strangers. The researchers proposed that people would sit closer to physically similar others even when those physical similarities are unrelated to important markers of social status, such as sex and race. The study states that without the opportunity to interact facilitated by physical proximity, a relationship is less likely to form (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Across 4 studies, it was found that people tend to sit closer to physically similar others than physically dissimilar others. Study 1 revealed significant aggregation in seating patterns on two easily observed characteristics: glasses wearing and sex. Seating arrangements at a Canadian university on campus computer lab with 31 seats was observed on 21 (non overlapping) occasions over 3 months. Using a seating diagram, the researcher recorded whether a person occupied each seat. In total, 356 individuals were observed; 23% were wearing glasses (N = 82) and 57.6% were women (N = 205). This shows that, as predicted, glasses wearers sat by other glasses wearers (and non glasses wearers by other non glasses wearers) more frequently than expected by chance alone. Study 2 replicated this finding with a wider variety of physical traits: race, sex, glasses wearing, hair length, and hair color. • 24. Women Of The Elizabethan Society Women of the Elizabethan society, such as in Shakespeare s Othello, are particularly not considered as equal. Women were more often seen as less of people who need to be helped and aided by man. This ideology was spread by both men and women of that time by them playing into the gender roles of male and female. Othello gives a relative example of the male and female ideology being accepted and spread throughout society in the Elizabethan age. With it only being three women in the play, Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca and then the rest of the members being male species, it is difficult to not come across gender issues. There are many expectations of women as well as roles that they acquired back in the Elizabethan society. Firstly, women were treated as objects of possession towards men. For example, when the duke had decided to give permission for Desdemona to escort Othello to Cyprus. Othello speaks to Iago, coincidentally relating to him as a man of honesty and trust , informing the Duke that To his conveyance I assign my wife (I.3.283). Desdemona, being as Othello s wife, is treated as his possession and it is implied that she is a like a commodity to be guarded and transported. Later, the first Senator, send farewell wishes to Othello, concludes by hoping that Othello will use Desdemona well (I.3.288). The word use seems to suggest that women are indeed looked at as objects which also supports the Venetian expectation of women. That they are to obey the wills of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although these systems all work together with one common goal, to maintain homeostasis, perhaps there are not two systems that work more closely together than the respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. Although the entirety of each body system has a generalized common goal, these two systems share a relationship. • 32. Fossil Fuels And Renewable Energy Essay Finding energy sources is an issue that polarizes scientists, politicians and citizens alike. The most critical points of this debate are at fossil fuels and renewable energy. Energy efficiency is arguably the most dire concern facing the planet, because it significantly impacts all areas of everyday life. Common ground can be found in this controversy because both parties do agree that humans have a responsibility to future generations. That responsibility is to preserve the resources of the Earth, while offering this generation energy that is affordable and accessible. Many people contend that fossil fuels, while being the most cost effective source of energy, have detrimental effects on the environment. Others argue that fossil fuels have little negative environmental impact and that producing alternative energy is too economically prohibitive to be feasible. In 2010, the Gallup Poll conducted a national poll that found half of the Americans surveyed favored expanding energy production via fossil fuels even if it harms the environment. This was the case in nearly every major demographic subgroup, although self identified liberals remained constant in supporting environmental protection as the higher priority (McDermott). Of these two types of energy production, fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal make up about ninety percent of the world s energy usage. After his banishment, Dante wrote The Divine Comedy, an epic poem that sets up a flawless system of punishment, redemption and salvation.
