Leiomyoma, commonly known as uterine fibroids, are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus that are the most common tumors of the female pelvis. They occur most frequently in women during their childbearing years. While the exact causes are unknown, risk factors include high estrogen levels. Leiomyomas can be classified based on their location within the uterus as submucosal, subserosal, or intramural. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most accurate imaging technique for detecting and classifying leiomyomas.
