 The fibresareelongated thick walled cellswith pointed ends,
cell wallsof which consistsof celluloseor maycontain lignin
 In medical practice ,theyareused as surgical dressings made up
of natural orartificial materials
 Fibresobtained fromvarious sourcescan becharacterised as

a. Plant fibres –jute, flax, banana, cotton, hemp
b. Animal fibres –silk ,wool
c. Regenerated and synthetic fibres – nylon, orlon

• B.S: Its consists of the epidermal trichomes or
hairs of the seeds of cultivated species of
(Gossypium herbaceuree)

B.S: Its consists of phloem fibres of the stem of various
species of Corchorus olitorius
CONSTITUENTS:
cellulose(53%),hemicellulose(20%),lignin(10%)
USES : preparation of gunny bags
 FLAX
B.S: These are pericylic fibres obtained from the stem of
plant Linum usitatissimum
FAMILY:Linaceae USES
:maufacture of lint

5. ANIMAL FIBRES
 SILK
B.S: Theseare fibres obtained from cocoons of Bombyx mori

CONSTITUENTS : Itsconsists protein called as fibroin

B.S:wool orwool fibres areobtained from fleece of sheep

6. ⚫RAYON
⚫B.S: it is an artifical fibre,composed of regenerated
cellulose in which substituents have replaced not more
than 15% of hydroxyl groups
⚫FAMILY:
⚫USES:making fabrics,preparation of surgical dressings and
viscose rayon absorbentwool.

7. SYNTHETIC FIBRES
⚫NYLON(POLYAMIDE):
⚫It is a polymerof adipicacid and hexamethylene
diamine.
⚫USES:it is used for filtercloths,sievesand non
absorbable sutures.
⚫TERYLENE:
⚫It is a polymerof ethyleneglycol and terepthalicacid
⚫USES:it is being used forartificial grafts and alsoas no
absorbable suture.

8. MINERAL FIBRES:
⚫GLASS FIBRES:
⚫The fibres consists of sand,mixed w :ith oxides of
aluminium,calcium,boron and magnesium.they are un
affected byall usual reagents used in identification of
fibres.
⚫ASBESTOS:
⚫Itconsistsof mainly hydrated magnesium silicates.
⚫ USES:
⚫It is used in the preparatio of a filtering mediumand
for bacterial fibres.

9. SURGICAL DRESSINGS
⚫The word surgical dressing is used to include all
mineral eitherused aloneor in combination tocover
thewound.
⚫Dressings are meant for the following functions
To reduce orprevent infections.
Toofferprotection to healing wound.
