Fertilization occurs when a sperm meets an ovule in the fallopian tubes. During pregnancy, which lasts 9 months, the embryo is nourished through the umbilical cord and develops in the amniotic sac inside the mother's uterus. Pregnancy involves 3 stages of fetal development, and babies born before 37 weeks are considered premature. Birth happens when the amniotic sac breaks, the cervix dilates, contractions help deliver the baby, and finally the placenta is expelled.
