Characteristics of Constructive Feedback
Function of Feedback
Feedback
The term feedback is often used to describe
all kinds of comments made after the fact,
including advice, praise, and evaluation.
Basically, feedback is information about how
we are doing in our efforts to reach a goal.
Feedback is information given to the learner
and/or the teacher about the learner’s
performance relative to learning goals.
Feedback
 Feedback is integral to the teaching - learning
process.
Feedback is an ongoing process.
 Effective feedback helps students to develop
their understanding and improve their
performance in relation to the standards of the
university.
Feedback is an essential part of effective learning.
It helps students understand the subject being
studied and gives them clear guidance on how to
improve their learning.
 Feedback is a process in which the effect or
output of an action is returned (fed – back) to
modify the next action.
It is a dialogue between people which reflects
back how another person sees someone else's
behavior or performance.
Types of Feedback

Goal is to make the learner feel good.

Goal is to measure student achievement with a
score or a grade.
Feedback that is intended to summarize student
achievement.
It does not give guidance on how to improve the
learner’s reasoning.
Since it is not intended to move students
forward in the learning process, it can be given
on summative assessments.

Effective Feedback
Goal is to get student to internalize the effective
feedback to use the suggested strategies
independently on future work.
Criteria-based phrases are used to describe the
strengths and weaknesses of the learner’s work.
Limits feedback to one or two traits / aspect of
quality at a time.
Students should have an opportunity to “redo” their
work based on the effective feedback.
 Describe and Inform, not Judge.
Specific and general
Suggest what should do to improve.
