A comparative analysis of library classification systemsAli Hassan Maken
We use classification each & every moment of the life by intentionally or unintentionally. Classification has always been the backbone of all Library operations and without it, library is definitely going to suffer in its recourse and to find a particular piece of information from unorganized heap of knowledge is almost impossible. The library classification is core instrument for organizing and retrieval of the documents stored in a library. At present era they are the navigation tools for locating and retrieving documents in more precisely and relevantly. The electronic versions of the DDC and UDC and other classification schemes make it possible to realize the potential of library classification to improve subject retrieval.

Canons of cataloguing are the specific normative principles applicable to cataloguing that is Drafting a catalogue code including the formulation of each rule. Interpretation of the rules to meet new situation brought out by a particular document or by the change in the practice of book production

Presentation at the KnoweScape workshop "Evolution and variation of classification systems" March 4-5, 2015 Amsterdam
In Library Classification System, Many Classification Schemes were emereged.Among them, some are very very important. they were explained well in this PPT. Dr.M.Anjaiah
Ontology has its roots as a field of philosophical study that is focused on the nature of existence. However, today's ontology (aka knowledge graph) can incorporate computable descriptions that can bring insight in a wide set of compelling applications including more precise knowledge capture, semantic data integration, sophisticated query answering, and powerful association mining - thereby delivering key value for health care and the life sciences. In this webinar, I will introduce the idea of computable ontologies and describe how they can be used with automated reasoners to perform classification, to reveal inconsistencies, and to precisely answer questions. Participants will learn about the tools of the trade to design, find, and reuse ontologies. Finally, I will discuss applications of ontologies in the fields of diagnosis and drug discovery.

Dr. Michel Dumontier is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Biomedical Informatics) at Stanford University. His research focuses on the development of methods to integrate, mine, and make sense of large, complex, and heterogeneous biological and biomedical data. His current research interests include (1) using genetic, proteomic, and phenotypic data to find new uses for existing drugs, (2) elucidating the mechanism of single and multi-drug side effects, and (3) finding and optimizing combination drug therapies. Dr. Dumontier is the Stanford University Advisory Committee Representative for the World Wide Web Consortium, the co-Chair for the W3C Semantic Web for Health Care and the Life Sciences Interest Group, scientific advisor for the EBI-EMBL Chemistry Services Division, and the Scientific Director for Bio2RDF, an open source project to create Linked Data for the Life Sciences. He is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief for a Data Science, a new IOS Press journal featuring open access, open review, and semantic publishing.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Introduction of DDC
The Dewey Decimal Classification system is used in
Library classification that is continusly revised to keep
pace with current knowledge.
This system first published in the United State of
America by Melvile Louis Kossuth Dewey in 1876. Melvil
Dewey ,the man who had this great idea for organizing
Library classification.
The first editon of DDC consisted of only 42 pages at taht
time
since 1876 to 2011 (23rd edition) this scheme did not look
back, and it is popularly has grown day by day through
out the world.
it is translated more than 30 language.
4. Feature of DDC
It has ten main classes (000-900 known as the ‘first
schedule’).
These are further subdivided into units of ten (010-
900 known as the ‘second schedule’).
These are then subdivided by ten ( so that the one
thousand division from 001-999 is known as the
‘third schedule’).
10 Main classes (first schedule/first summary).
100 Division (second schedule/first summary).
1ooo Section (third schedule/first summary).
5. The schedules
The schedule number include the start (or ‘base’
number ) of each DDC number.
They range from 000 to 900.
The ten main classes are :-
000 Generalities
100 Philosophy, Psychology
200 Religion
300 Social Science
400 Language
6. ….continue
500 Pure Science & Mathematics
600 Applied Science & Technology
700 The Arts
800 Literature
900 Geography & History
Two rules regarding schedule number-
1) Schedule numbers are never less than Three digit
number, and
2) A schedule number must never end with Zero
anywhere to the right side of decimal point
For example , use 512.31 NOT 512.310
7. The Tables :
There are Seven numbered Tables-
T1 Standard Subdivision ( Such as ‘ Encyclopedia’
or ‘ Periodical’ )
T2 Geographic areas, Historical periods, Biography
T3 Literature and Literary form
T4 Individual language & language families
T5 Racial, Ethnic and National group
T6 Languages
T7 Groups of Person
THE END
8. Introduction of UDC
The Universal Decimal Classification scheme of
classification was developed in the year 1895 by the
Belgium Barrister Paul Otlet and Winer Henri La
Fountaine.
The UDC is derived from DDC as universal since it
encompass the whole field of knwoldge.
It is the multi-lingual general classification tool for
organizing all kinds of recorded knowledge in the
library.
it is an international classification systyem mainly
developed for the purpose of indexing and arranging
9. ….continue
an enormous card bibliography which not only
includes books but also all kind of documents,
periodical article, patents, trade catalogues, abstracts
and other micro document in more than 28 different
international languages.
10. Features of UDC
1.UDC is a practical scheme based on the demands of
pamphlets, reports and periodical literature rather
than the framework of a theory.
2.The scheme is based on DDC and claims to be the
first Analytico-synthetic classification scheme.
3.It lays more stress to achieve co-extensive class
numbers i.e. detailed specification than the
achievement of a sequence of subjects for optimum
helpfulness.
4.It avoids the lacunae of numerous private
classification schemes by providing a standard
system covering all the disciplines and may be used
in any type of library.
11. Continue……
5.It is a general classification scheme and not a bundle
of special classification.
6.It is rather an integrated whole. The scheme reflects
exhaustive enumeration in the schedule with due
provision for synthesis or coordination.
7.It is amenable to adjustments to meet the special
needs because acitation order in any given class
allows alternative treatment.
8.The use of synthetic devices like colon (:), permits
coordination of concept in different permutation,
there by minimizing the rigidity in the enumerated
classification scheme.
12. Continue……
9.An International body for its maintenance and
revision with full cooperation of its users guarantees
the continual existence of the system as a current
and up-to-date one.
10.The terminology used in UDC helps in a
comprehensive vocabulary of terms for indexing
purposes.
