Introduction
 As a name indicates it’s a professional association of teachers of library and information science.
 Formed On 19th December 1969,
 In a meeting of the teachers of library science attending the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment Lectures, convened by
Mr. P. N. Kaula at DRTC with Mr. D. K. Langridge as the chair.
 Mr. Derek Langridge, principal lecturer, North Western Polytechnic School (ENGLAND) delivered Sarada Ranganathan
Endowed Lectures at DRTC, Bangalore on ‘ Teaching of Library Classification’ from 15-19 December 1969.
 The IATLIS was remained dormant from 1973-80.
 Since December 1980, more than 150 LIS teachers and professionals from India and abroad, such as Nigeria, the
Republic of China, and the USA have become members of this professional body.
 Till date, IATLIS has 575 members.

Historical Background
 The idea of founding an association of library teachers was floated at the UNESCO Regional seminar held at the
University of Delhi in OCTOBER 1960 and later on discussion at the three seminars .
 ALL INDIA SEMINAR on education for librarianship held at BANARAS HINDU UNIVERSITY (1963).
 ALL INDIA SEMINAR on education for Librarianship held at SNDT WOMEN’S UNIVERSITY (1965).
 ALL INDIA SEMINAR on teaching of library science held at DELHI UNIVERSITY (1966).

Formation of the Organisation
 Mr. P. N. Kaula on advice of D.B Krishna gave the opening address and stating the purpose of meeting.
 He described the whole structure of library education in country.
 Dr. D. B Krishna Rao declared that IATLIS be formed with an ad-hoc committee constituted for this purpose.
 In the end a committee was formed with Dr. D. B Krishna Rao as its chairman as P. N Kaula as its secretary.
 The General Body meeting of IATLIS was held on 21st December 1970 to adopt the draft constitution circulated to
members earlier with Mr. P. B. Roy as the chair.
 Prof Bashir ud din was the first president and Prof. P. N. Kaula was the first general secretary of the IATLIS.
 It also consists of four Regional Secretaries for the four regions of India viz. North, South, East and West Region.

Objectives
 To promote the exchange of ideas on education in library and information science;
 To promote research & education in library and information science;
 To promote the publication of books and periodicals on education in library and information science;
 To hold conferences and seminars, for the development and propagation of ideas on education in
library and information science;
 To give consultation service on education in library and information science
 To promote the training of the teachers of library and information science in India, and
 To promote the welfare of teachers of library and information science in India.

Workshops
 IATLIS organized first national workshop on “LIS teachers and the digital future” at the central
library, IIT MADRAS, CHENNAI from 17 to 19 January 2007.
 2nd Such workshop was organised by IATLIS in collaboration with Central library, IIT Bombay ‘3 day
national workshop on LIS education in digital era’ from 13-15 june,2007 on the campus of IIT.
 It was attended by 38 participants including teachers, librarians and research scholars from all
over the country.

PUBLICATION
Besides publishing seminars and conferences proceedings of the IATLIS conference, IATLIS
also publishes IATLIS communications, which is the official organ of Indian Association Of
Teaches of Library and Information Sciences.
IATLIS Journal of Library Education and Research (IJLER),a half-yearly publication of
IATLIS is being published since 2013

 Besides already exsisting two awards viz.:
 IATLIS-Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award
 IATLIS –Mrs Ratna Laxman RAO Best Woman LIS Teacher /Professional Award.
 Two new awards, namely
 IATLIS-Prof. S. P. Narang Research Promotion Award (for researcher).
 IATLIS Prof. Jagindar singh Ramdev Lifetime Achievement Award has been instituted recently

 IATLIS offers different memberships to different level of profession like, teachers of library and
information science, staff of libraries, Researchers, students and others interested in library and
information science education and research.
 IATLIS offers lifetime membership to the teachers of Library and Information Science and the staff of
libraries.
 Students, researchers and other interested in Library and Information Science education and
research can also join as Associate Members.
